Volume 58 No. 4 January-February 2018 Our 93rd Year
Brothers,
Happy New Year!! May 2018 be a happy, healthy
and prosperous one for the Joseph Barry Council and
for each one of you and your families.
Happily, the council is continuing to thrive with all
of the activities and help of all my brother Knights. So
much has happened since our last publication. We
delivered our Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to
the needy. We hope this small gesture helps make
their holidays a little brighter. Thanks to Brian Lee
for his continued efforts in these functions. Also,
thanks to all the helpers who made the going much
easier for all. December, being one of the busiest
months, we had our 300 Club Party, the Children’s
Christmas Party, the Council Christmas Party and the
infamous New Year’s Eve Gala. Fun activities that
were enjoyed by all.
In January we are looking forward to the
following:
• The Winter Picnic- Jan. 12th - thanks to all
who brave the cold to cook so we could have
a fun evening
• The Basketball Free Throw– Jan. 20th-a fun
day for kids
• 1st & 2nd Degree – Jan. 16th – 3rd Degree Jan.
26th- hosted by the Joseph Barry Council
• Super Bowl Sunday – Feb. 4th-The Holy Grail
for football fans
• Ash Wednesday – Feb. 14th – the beginning
of the Holy Season of Lent.
Thanks to all who have made this a successful
Columbian year so far. We can only keep that
going with your help. Please continue your
charitable spirit. With your volunteer efforts we
are sure to have a GREAT 2nd half.
Vivat Jesus

Why the name Knights of
Columbus? The name of Columbus was intended as a mild
rebuke to Anglo-Saxon Protestant leaders, who
upheld the explorer (a Genovese Italian Catholic who
had worked for Catholic Spain) as an American hero,
yet simultaneously sought to marginalize recent
Catholic immigrants.
In taking Columbus as their patron, the founders
expressed their belief that not only could Catholics
be full members of American society, but that they
were instrumental in its foundation. Father
McGivney had originally conceived of the name
"Sons of Columbus". James T. Mullen, who would
ascend to become the first Supreme Knight, was
successful in suggesting that "Knights of Columbus"
better expressed the ritualistic nature of the new
organization and drew from positive historical
associations.

300 Club Concludes 2017 Year
The 300 Club concluded its business for
2017 at the annual year end party on December
1st. The Club was more successful than last
year in that we finished the year with only 35
unsold numbers. We were able to contribute
more than $7,000 to the Kenny Club. This
money will be used to maintain and upgrade our
facility at 45 Heitz Place.
Thanks to all who participated in this effort
especially the committee and the captains.
Please encourage friends and family
members to participate in 2018. Each number
costs $50 for the year and entitles the owner to
attend the annual party with a guest as well as
chances to win five prizes per month from
January through November and another eleven
prizes which are drawn at the party which next
year will be held on December 7th.
You may pay for your number for 2018
through your captain, leaving it at the tap room
or mailing to the Club at 45 Heitz Place. If you
drop it off or mail it, please mark it clearly for
the 300 Club.

Columbus Way Restored
Merry Christmas!!
Our Guarantees Set Us Apart
Knights of Columbus life insurance offers
something precious few other financial products can –
guarantees. As long as you pay your premiums, the
policy proceeds will be there for your beneficiaries
should something happen to you. That’s peace of
mind, and that’s what we offer with every product in
our portfolio.
We guarantee the cash value in your whole life
policies will be there.
We guarantee the rates on your term insurance.
We guarantee the rate and your principal in our
retirement annuities.
On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee
that I will offer professional, high-quality service that
you would expect from our organization.
Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in
North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of
Columbus “A++, Superior” for 40 consecutive years.
It’s a testament to our track record for excellence and
security.
I would suggest that a principal reason that we
were able to achieve those accolades is because
we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of
Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney by providing
life insurance by brother Knights for brother
Knights.
That commitment is an essential core value of
the Knights of Columbus, and our core values
permeate all levels of our organization. We pledge
to serve our brother Knights, and their families,
according to our Golden Rule: “In all my
professional relationships, I pledge myself to the
following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all
conditions surrounding those I serve, render that
service which, under the same circumstances, I
would apply to myself.”
Let’s talk soon to discuss how our products can
bring that peace of mind to you and your family.

On December 19, a group of Knights joined
Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and employees
from the Public Works Department to restore the
signs designating a portion of Heitz Place as
Columbus Way. These signs had been
deteriorating and were at some point knocked
down since first put in place in the 1970’s.
