Sarsha wrote about the story of Louisa Lawson, a woman who contributed a great deal to the emancipaon of women in Australia in the late 19 th Century. Louisa supported the suffragee movement for women to be given the vote and to be allowed to be elected to Parliament. These goals were both achieved and Louisa was acknowledged as one of the driving forces behind the adopon of fairer laws in Australia. It was a superb piece of work and tells a story that is not only of great interest to all Australians - male and female - but is an extremely important part of Australia's history. I would like to thank Sarsha for taking me through Louisa's personal story, and also for demonstrang a high level skill in historical research. Principal’s Report

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with one of our Year 10 students Sarsha Crawley to discuss a history paper that she had written and submitted for national award consideration. “Louisa Lawson: Matriarch of Australian Feminism – The story of how Australian women achieved the vote” is a remarkable piece of work from a Year 10 student. This 2,400 word history of one of Australia’s forgotten leaders, has led to four major awards being presented to Sarsha in Term Four and I think that it is worth reflecting for a moment on why Sarsha’s work was so important. Sarsha wrote about the story of Louisa Lawson, a woman who contributed a great deal to the emancipation of women in Australia in the late 19th Century. Louisa supported the suffragette movement for women to be given the vote and to be allowed to be elected to Parliament. These goals were both achieved and Louisa was acknowledged as one of the driving forces behind the adoption of fairer laws in Australia. It was a superb piece of work and tells a story that is not only of great interest to all Australians - male and female - but is an extremely important part of Australia's history. I would like to thank Sarsha for taking me through Louisa's personal story, and also for demonstrating a high level skill in historical research. END OF YEAR Thank you to all parents, students and teachers at East Doncaster Secondary College for the work that you have done to help make our school such a wonderful place of learning throughout 2012.

Daniel Elkington: ATAR Score: 99.80

Daniel presents himself as very modest, unassuming young person. He has, however, been an extremely diligent and reliable student of the college.

Daniel’s academic results have consistently been of a very high standard and this was reflected in 2011 when Daniel achieved the perfect study score of 50 in his accelerated Year 12 subject of Information Technology – a remarkable feat for any Year 11 student and one for which Daniel achieved a Premier’s Award this year. Daniel was able to match that effort this year when he once again received a study score of 50 in Maths Methods.

These achievements by Daniel and by extension, this award, comes as little surprise to Daniel’s teachers who all confirm that he is a student who strives for perfection in his studies. He received Merit Certificates in every year of his studies at East Doncaster Secondary College.

His quest for excellence is certainly acknowledged and respected by his peer group, and Daniel became a visible role model within The John Landy Centre this year as all students could clearly see how hard he was working and how dedicated he was to succeeding in his studies.

We congratulate Daniel on his wonderful achievement and wish him well in his future endeavours.

The system allows parents to update their details, read student reports, access the newsletter and up-to-date school information, and contact teachers directly via email. We encourage all parents to become acquainted with Compass and login regularly in the new year to keep in touch with all the school news.

What is Music Information Night? This is an evening for you to hear about the advantages and opportunities available as part of learning a musical instrument at EDSC. Year 8 Health & Personal Development Year 10 Surfing Trip

On Tuesday 27 November, twenty six Year 10 Sport and Recreation students plus two Year 11 students from last year’s class travelled to Phillip Island for a surfing day trip. It was rainy and stormy as we were leaving school at 7:30 in the morning and continued to get worse as we drove to Smiths Beach! However, once we were dressed in our wetsuits and went down on the beach, we didn’t even notice the rain.

The instructors took us through a skills lesson on land, spoke to the group about rips and water safety and then we were away. The group spent the best part of 2 hours in the perfect waves and we basically had the beach to ourselves. The time flew while we were in the water and no one wanted to leave at the end.

We saw some outstanding nose dives – special mention to Luke Crawford who had the stack of the day and then got straight back up to catch another wave; some natural talent – special mention to Milly Graham and Andrew Jackson; and some interesting sound effects while catching waves from James Vovos. Every person gave it their all and had a fantastic day. We had many comments from the instructors on what a great group of students they were. A great way to finish the Semester off for Year 10!

Community Project - Christmas Hamper Donations Christmas time can be very challenging for many families throughout Melbourne. As part of the Community Service project for Year 8 Health & Personal Development, students worked in small groups to create wonderful hamper packs for the many needy families. The aim of this activity is to develop empathy and compassion and instil in the students the importance of not just receiving in this world but also making an effective contribution to the local community.

This is the second Year the Year 8’s have created these offerings and they were given to the Doncaster Corps of the Salvation Army who were most appreciative. The Year 8’s involved were 8A, 8B, 8D, 8E, and 8I. The Salvation Army were just about to start organising their distribution of Christmas hampers to the needy so were absolutely thrilled to receive such a substantial contribution from the students. It was wonderful to see the positive and enthusiastic attitudes by the students creating these offerings and most pleasing to witness their generosity of spirit.

We were very proud of the students’ hard work and we encourage all students to continue with a conscientious, empathetic approach to the many community projects available throughout Melbourne. Well done Year 8.

MOBILE PHONE FUNDRAISER – KEEP COLLECTING MOBILE PHONES OVER THE HOLIDAY BREAK! Many of us may be fortunate enough to receive new mobile phones over the break. If this is you, you can bring your old phone to the college early next year and place it in the specially marked box in the General Office to help raise funds for the college. As the phones will be reconditioned, please ensure that all personal data has been removed/cleared from the phone. FESTIVE GREETINGS FROM PARENTS & FRIENDS The Parents & Friends group wish the whole school community a safe and happy time over the Christmas break, and thank you for supporting their events during the year. In my family’s final year at the college, and as outgoing President of the PFA, I would like to thank John Handley and the staff of the college for their continued support of the group. In particular, I would like to pay tribute to the wonderful group of people who make up the Parents & Friends Committee including those on our Helpers List. I hope the group continues to thrive in our school community and wish you all the very best for the coming year.

Please note that there will be no secondhand book sale this year. Thursday 29 November What a way to spend the hottest November day for 65 years…dress up in Medieval attire and play Medieval games! Students participated in a range of activities including Heraldry, Dancing, Tournament and Medieval Japan.

The purpose of the day was to give the students a chance to learn history through hands on experience. The students were very

well behaved despite the extreme heat. Thank you to the Medieval Education team and the Year 8 Humanities team who helped the day run smoothly.

Dear Parents of Years 7-10 Students, We would like to communicate an issue around royal blue jumpers that may have been purchased since 2011. After consultation with the College late last year and examining batches of royal blue jumpers, we have found that two batches of jumpers have been affected in the dyeing process, resulting in the royal blue jumpers fading excessively. If you notice any discolouration of your jumper, please return it to our PSW Kew Store as soon as possible for examination and if found to be affected, a replacement jumper will be issued We apologise in advance for the inconvenience this may cause and our intention is to continue to supply your community with quality uniforms and excellent service. Yours sincerely, Team at PSW Kew Store 12 Strathalbyn Street EAST KEW VIC 3102 03 9819 7809
