Pr incipal's Message
Welcome Deer Canyon Families to the 2020-2021 School Year!
If ever there was a time to recognize our doers and achievers, this is it! The staff of Deer Canyon is working hard to prepare for our students? Virtual start to school. PTA and Foundation are brainstorming virtual enrichment activities to keep our community connected, and families are preparing Virtual Learning spaces for students to start our year. The lazy days of summer are quietly settling behind us as school supplies permeate our stores and Virtual Learning arrives. While there continues to be much uncertainty about the year ahead, there is one thing that is certain. The staff and families of Deer Canyon are going to have a GREAT year!
While we are ALL beginning September 2nd in a virtual learning mode, there is interest in the PUSD Board of Education to open elementary schools sooner than January, if metrics are met and it is feasible. Classes are being created to allow for this pivot and minimize disruption to our students. Using your responses to the Family Commitment Survey, students electing ?on campus? will be placed together and students electing ?virtual learning? will be placed together. Furthermore, students attending ESS will be clustered within their grade level. This grouping will simplify a return to campus, possibly in a staggered session to minimize exposure. This placement model creates numerous multi-age classes. We have the most creative, flexible, and talented staff at Deer Canyon! Our teachers are determined to make this year amazing for our students, whether learning virtually or on campus. Our collaborative efforts will ensure every child grows and succeeds this year. We thank you in advance for your understanding and support as we continue to navigate these unchartered waters.
Material Pick Up/ Form Drop Off and Our Drive Through Welcome Back Rally
On Wednesday, September 2nd we are inviting families to join us as defined in the schedule on the next page. This will allow families with multiple children to drop off required forms (see next page), pick up their materials and greet their new teachers at the same time. Grade level representatives will be spread out along our driveway, wearing masks and socially distancing. We strongly request that ALL families drive through and that all remain in their vehicles. If you are unable to attend on this day, please make arrangements with a friend or neighbor to pick up your supplies. Your child will need them for virtual learning.

Virtual Learning creates a new schedule and set of expectations for our students. Teachers will be implementing lessons as we start the year to build classroom community and set expectations. At home, it will be important for families to do the same. As we prepare to start the year, please ensure:
1. Your child has a dedicated work space at home. This space should be in a quiet space with limited distractions.
2. Your workspace has necessary materials. A bin with sharpened pencils, crayons, scissors, colored pencils, markers, highlighters, and notebook paper will help your student meet each day with success. Be sure to also keep a bottle of water nearby.
3. Your device is fully charged each night and ready for the day.

Families may wish to print the rules poster from page 11 of Echoes as a reminder to students of our school-wide expectations. Teachers will be reviewing these expectations and how they tie to classroom expectations during Virtual Learning. Additional expectations for being a responsible Digital Citizen will also be reviewed as we begin the year.

Pr incipal's Message, Cont inuedSchedule for First Day of School
We are SO excited for the return of our students and families - even in our time of Virtual Learning. We have many events and activities planned to introduce students to this new and exciting year.
Many thanks to our families who completed the Virtual Learning Start Time Survey! Please see the results posted later in echoes. Your voice was clear! Our Virtual Learning hours will be 8:30 a.m. - 2:45 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9:45 a.m. - 2:45 a.m. on Friday.
Below is our schedule for the first day of school, Wednesday, September 2nd. We are looking forward to meeting our new classes of learners during the materials pick up and rally.
The complete daily learning schedule for subsequent days can be found at the end of Echoes. Teachers will initially be using small group time to meet individually with students. We are working hard to build collaborative bridges between home and school, while getting to know our students. Please feel free to reach out as our year begins with any needs or celebrations.

For our new families, my name is Mrs. MacDougall and I am the School Counselor. I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing summer but I
also recognize that each of you likely experienced frustration and uncertainty amid the pandemic. Please know that I am a resource available to all students, families, and staff. Although I am sad I haven't been able to see your smiling faces walking through the halls this week, I know this back to school season will be made special by all of our amazing teachers! I'm looking forward to popping into classroom Zoom's and seeing you all soon.
Be on the lookout for helpful ideas and resources in this section of ECHOES as we navigate this tricky start to the year together.

At Deer Canyon the Echoes Newsletter is one of our primary tools to communicate with our school community. We hope you read it every week to have all the information you need about Deer Canyon Elementary. Echoes is created by parent volunteers. Become part of the Echoes Editorial Team. Welcome From t he DC PTA
Deer Canyon Elementary Families,
On behalf of Deer Canyon PTA, I?d like to welcome both new and returning families to Deer Canyon Elementary. I'm looking forward to working with our awesome teachers and staff, and our amazing principal, Mrs. Worthington. The 2020-2021 school year will definitely be unlike any other.
PTA is an organization run locally by parents and staff. As we start this unprecedented school year, please know that as always, the PTA?s main goal is to provide academic and social support for our parents, teachers, and most importantly students!
Everyone in our board is working hard to ensure the unity of our school community through programs enriching the experience for all involved at Deer Canyon. We?re adapting to Virtual learning and will provide more information in coming weeks about our upcoming events and activities tailored to keep our families connected to our school.
Now more than ever, we are eager to hear your ideas and suggestions and serve as your advocates.

Welcome back, Deer Canyon Families!
This will be a year unlike any other, but I have no doubt that it is going to be another great year!
Deer Canyon Elementary Foundation is a non-profit, established solely to support our staff and programs with funding the District does not provide. We are a parent-run organization that works closely with school staff for the collective benefit of our children.
Please join us to ensure our students can continue to grow and succeed!
We have worked through the summer for a smooth transition back to school, and the world of Virtual learning. You?ll see us at material pick-up on Sept. 2nd and at Welcome Back Zoom meetings during the first weeks of school. We are working with DC?s PTA and foundations across PUSD to ensure that our school, students and staff have everything they need for a successful year.
