The Enlightenment and Masonry By Richard Llewellyn Jones, 32°, KCCH

Enlightenment Article 12 (John Locke) It is hard to underestimate the centrality of John Locke (1632-1704) to the Enlightenment and to the drafting of our Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Tak-ing up from his predecessors, Locke’s epistemology (theory of knowledge), dealt a death blow to the Aristote-lian Scholasticism that had been the prevailing intellec-tual paradigm throughout the seventeenth century. Locke was born into a Puritan family and raised during the tumultuous period between the over-throw of Charles I (1649), the Cromwellian Protectorate (1649-1660) and the Restoration of the Crown and Charles II (1660). His father was a country lawyer who served in the cavalry during the English Civil War under the command of Alexander Po-pham, a local member of parliament. It was through Po-pham’s patronage the young Locke gained his education, first at Westminster school and then at Oxford. Like most of his contemporary Enlightenment luminar-ies, Locke found the Aristotelian Scholasticism that re-mained the primary focus of higher learning at Oxford wanting. Locke gravitated to a growing number of stu-dents and faculty that were beginning to challenge the ex-isting paradigm in much the way Francis Bacon (1561-1626) had in Novum Organum, first published in 1620. Following Bacon’s lead, Locke and his fellow students concluded that the best way to understand the natural world was through keen observation and the systematic collection of facts to arrive at generalizations that could be rigorously tested. In many ways, Locke greatly expanded the role of empiricism that had been forcefully argued by Bacon. Locke received his B.A. in 1656 and then went on to study medicine. Locke immersed himself in the work of Robert Boyle (1627-1691) and Issac Newton (1643-1727), both of whom he knew personally. It was through the lens of Boyle and Newton that Locke was introduced to the work of René Descartes (1596–1650). Although he found Descartes an alternative to the Aristo-telian Scholasticism he found so objectionable at Oxford, he disagreed with Descartes’ belief that humans possess a God given innate knowledge of the world around us that we must merely unlock through reflection. Instead, Locke believed that all knowledge is acquired through our experi-ence of and interaction with the world around us. For Locke, the human mind at birth is a “tabula rasa” (blank slate) through which we obtain knowledge from two sources: (1) sensation acquired from our experiences with the natural world and (2) reflection of the mind on the ideas generated from those experiences. In refuting Des-cartes epistemology, Locke argued in his Essay Concern-ing Human Understanding (1689) that if knowledge is in-

nate as asserted by Descartes, “children and idiots” should be as knowledgeable of the world around us as a competent adult! For Locke, all knowledge, whether scientific, philoso-phic or theological, is based upon experience which leads to general propositions. But these general propositions are provisional and always subject to review and revision should empirical testing reveal those general propositions to be faulty or inadequate. Whereas Descartes’ epistemology, based upon God given innate knowledge of the world around us from birth left humans little free will, Locke’s epistemology based on knowledge gleaned from our empirical exploration of God’s creation rather than innate knowledge, provided hu-mans substantially more free will. With such free will, we can rightly discuss the nature of God, based upon empirical evidence of his existence, and consider the proper place of kings and monarchs, based upon their benefit to society as a whole. These notions clearly conflicted with the prevail-ing paradigm of the absolute authority of the Catholic Church and the divine right of kings. From Locke’s epistemology flowed his theories about government. Like Thomas Hobbs (1588-1679) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) after him, Locke argued in his Second Treatise of Government (1690) that humans have “natural rights” to “life, health, liberty or posses-sions.” Sounds a lot like the phrase “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” found in our Declaration of Inde-pendence. However, the uncertain state of nature pro-pelled people to enter into “social contracts” with the gov-ernments the goal of promoting their security and welfare. In this, Locke was skeptical of monarchy, which tended to intolerance and tyranny, and advocated separation of pow-ers in government. These notions also found their way into our founding documents, especially our Constitution. Locke’s influence on our founding fathers cannot be underestimated. As Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) wrote: “Bacon, Locke and Newton . . .I consider them as the three greatest men that have ever lived, without any exception, and as having laid the foun-dation of those superstructures which have been raised in the Physical and Moral sciences.” High praise from the leading architect of our Constitution. Locke set into motion radical changes in our thinking about our natural world and our place in it. Certainly, our democratic form of government and notions of rights and responsibilities owe a consid-erable debt of gratitude to John Locke.

Happy Thanksgiving! By Todd E. Creason

On behalf of the Midnight Free-masons, I'd like to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. One thing I know we're all thankful for here at the Midnight Freemasons, is for our read-ers who have made this blog such a success over the last several years. So enjoy this story about Thanksgiving and a famous Freemason. I put this same story up every year. It's becom-ing a Thanksgiving tradition in it-self. And it goes like this . . . The tradition of celebrating the harvest on a Thursday goes back to Plymouth and the Pilgrims. The most fa-mous of these was the three day festival in 1621, when Plymouth governor William Bradford invited local Indi-ans to join the Pilgrims feast. But it wasn't until the 17th century that it became an annual custom. George Washington, issuing the very first Presidential proclamation, declared November 26th, 1789 as a day of national thanksgiving for the United States Constitution. But it never really caught on until

1863, when President Lincoln de-clared that Thanksgiving would fall on the fourth Thursday of November and the holiday began to be celebrated nationally. Then comes Franklin D. Roosevelt, who decided after 75 years, he wanted to change what Lincoln had estab-lished. He proclaimed Thanksgiving as the next to last Thursday of No-vember. Very few liked the change,

and there was a huge controversy surrounding it. Some Americans simply ignored FDR and celebrated Thanks-giving as they always had on the date they always had. For the next two years, Franklin Roosevelt repeated the unpopular proclamation. Finally, in 1941, Roosevelt gave up on it. He signed a bill into law officially making the fourth Thursday in November the national holiday of Thanksgiving. And we've been celebrating it on that day ever since . Happy Thanksgiving

Once again it’s that time of year to appeal to the membership to remit their annual dues. Unfortunately – due to increased expenses, utilities, building improvements and experi-encing a slight raise in property taxes as well as a big raise in insurance rates – the Lodge of Perfection found it necessary to increase the Valley of Everett annual dues. Currently, our Valley membership stands at 196 members. Of which 36 have already remitted their 2022 an-nual dues. The Valley still has fifty (50) mem-bers who are due for 2022 – deadline of which is December 31st, 2021. Nine (9) of whom live outside the area. Which leaves 41 of whom live within our immediate service area. Sadly – we have made many prior efforts to induce 17 other members of the Valley of Everett who are still in default as follows: Ten (10) are due for 2021 and have also been billed for 2022. Seven (7) are due for 2020-2021 and have also been billed for 2022. These members are in Extreme de-fault and will most likely be sus-pended for non-payment of dues (NPD). Of these seventeen (17) brothers –

five (5) live outside the area or out of State. We currently have eleven (11) 50-Year members and five (5) members who are either incapacitated or unable to remit their dues for a total of six-teen (16). As was necessary last year, the Valley found it necessary to approach the Endowed (purchased) Life Mem-bers to voluntarily remit the per cap-ita’s assessed by the Orient of Wash-ington ($2 Rite Care and $3 Scholar-ship Foundation) and Supreme Coun-cil 33° Washington, DC $28 or total of $33. This year we saw another increase in per capita and again we found it nec-essary to approach the 77 Life mem-bers to voluntarily remit and/or do-nate towards the newly adjusted per capita of $37. So far – 14 members have contributed $518 plus an addi-tional $695 ($1,213) to offset these annual assessments – all which were directed to our general fund. The Valley has taken steps to in-crease our annual income by getting our kitchen upgraded to a licensed commissary kitchen, and have at-tracted outside vendors to supplement our income. This program is now in place and has been effective.

As it stands right now, we can hold our meeting in public however, we all must wear our mask while in the meet-ing. On Monday, October 4, 2021, the Valley held it stated Meeting where our newly elected Brethren received their 4th Degree by the Fourth Degree conferral team led by Ill. Brother George Lofthus with his team of cast members. All who were in atten-dance enjoyed a well put together degree. The Valley last month also held the Feast of Tishri on October 18th, 2021. This was a RSVP Dinner and all who attended had a very delicious meal prepared for us by our own personal Chef, Alice Anderson. Upon com-pletion of the meal, all enjoyed a Feast of Tishri Presen-tation by Brother Jeff Maynor 32, KCCH. Just a reminder to those members who pay Annual Dues to the Valley of Everett, that your annual dues of $150.00 are due to the Valley of Everett no later than December 31st, 2021 By now, all Life Members should have received their notification and letter of request along with a self addressed return envelope requesting

that our Valley Life Members, if financially able, to assist the Valley by voluntarily pay-ing the mandatory $37 per capita per mem-ber for the year 2022 as assessed by Su-preme Council and the Orient of Washing-ton. Your assistance in helping the Valley of Everett is truly appreciated The Valley of Everett Executive Commit-tee and Temple Board will meet via Zoom,

our General Secretary will email out the information to all the member of Valley of Everett to which cordially invited to attend. Finally Brethren, should you know a Brother, his fam-ily or one our widows that are ill or in need of some as-sistance please contact the Valley of Everett Almoner John Mathers, at 425-778-3772, so we may provide them with the assistance that may require. It is the Lodge of Perfections hope, now that as the doors are now open with restrictions, that all our Valley Brethren remember to make yourself present for all the stated meeting in your future Blue Lodges and more es-pecially, the Valley of Everett’s Scottish Rite meetings.

WHAT IS YOUR MASONIC MEMBERSHIP WORTH? BY DEWEY WOLLSTEIN, PGM

Have you ever paused to consider what your Masonic membership is worth to you- not in dollars, but in the things that dollars cannot buy? Was there ever a passport into more wonder-ful friendships than that represented by your membership in Masonry? Has the thought oc-curred to you that you extend your hand in fellow-ship and understanding, and it is received not by a limited group, but by millions? Do we give thought to the strength and inspiration that we receive from the lessons of Masonry, and how those lessons enrich our lives, and broaden our vi-sion? Yes, they even make possible an education, the like of which is not possible through any other course of instruction. Have you ever thought how Masonry makes you tolerant of the other fellow's faults and weaknesses

because Love has brought Wisdom from the Great Light of Freemasonry? Have you ever thought of the privileges of service that Masonry offers- the happiness derived from such service and sacrifice? When we entered the portals of Masonry we had certain qualifications necessary to

become a Mason, but do we take stock of ourselves and find that we have grown spiritually and mentally over years that we have worked in Masonry? Have you ever looked upon the face of a brother who is about to receive a button for 50 years of ser-vice to Masonry? What do you suppose Masonry has meant to that brother? Let us take our Masonic membership to our heart. Let us thank God for the privilege of our Masonic membership.
