    Our sweepstakes com-petition started the

day off, to give both the young and the old a chance to stretch their legs. Our judge, Mr. Dean Matteson, put them through the paces, selecting BURFORD’S WHAT WAS I THINKING as Best in Puppy Sweepstakes. “Ashley” had a big day, as she later took Winners Bitch for her owner handler, Lynda Evans. Lynda took a pretty bad tumble in the ring, injuring her wrist, but fortunately suffered no broken bones. BRITT’S RAM-BLIN BOURNE IDENTITY as Best Oppo-site Sex Puppy Sweepstakes, owned by Sue Richards and Jenelle Larson and handled by Jenelle. The Veterans Sweepstakes paired up the brother-sister combination with DC AFC ROJA’S GAMBLING CHIPS taking Best in Veteran Sweeps honors for owners Linda Langford & Agnes Rodrigues, shown by Linda. Vegas’ sister CH ROJA’S TUO-LUMNE GOLD OA, NAJ took Best Oppo-site Sex Veteran Sweeps for owners Susan & Tracy Kerns & Linda Langford. Wally was handled by owner Tracy Kerns.

Excitement mounted as our Specialty Judge, Mr. Douglas John-son made his final selections, shuffling the order of the entrants as he meas-ured, moved and compared them. In the end, Best of Breed was awarded to CH SANBAR’S CURTAIN CALL JH. “Jonnie” won Best in Show the previous day, and

1st in the Sporting Group all 4 days and is owned by Ralph Fagan, Polly West, Barbara Scott & Agnes Rodrigues, handled by Adam Wilkerson. Best of Opposite Sex was awarded to CH SWIFT RIVER’S DES-TINY’S CHILD. “Ellie” is a lovely 2 year old bitch, owned by Sharon Kalionzes and Pennie Peterson, and capably handled by Sharon, who’s nerves were tested when Ellie took her turn standing in the front of the lineup of judge’s selections. Best of Win-ners was awarded to BITTERSWEET’S MUSTANG COBRA from the 9-12 month puppy dog class, owned by Christie Eaton and Terri Wiley. “Coby” was handled to Winners Dog by Amy Rodrigues, and to Best of Winners by Christie Eaton, and is sired by “Jonnie”.

    (Continued from page 1)

After filling up on Tri-Tip Barbeque and Pot Luck luncheon, many members headed off to support the 3 entrants in Junior Showman-ship, exhibiting Brittanys. Amongst a group of 42 competitors, Megan Hill won Best Junior, showing CH BOOKER’S NORTH-ERN LEGACY, better known as “Emo.” Megan took home the loot, winning a deluxe back pack, a $10 gift certificate to Block-buster and a $500 check from the San Fer-nando Kennel Club.

As the weekend festivities drew to a close, we retire to say Thank You and Kudos to the members of the show committee, especially Linda McDonald for another successful raffle, Cindy Leffingwell, who collected and presented the trophies, Rich and Helen Har-bour and Bill Landress for their work on hospitality, and Bill Landress & Diane Dale who helped collect trophy donations, and Margaret Waite for her work negotiating for grounds. Big Thank You to Rich Harbour for sharing his photography.

  • The semi annual general member-ship meeting of the California

Brittany Club was called to order by President Bill Hacker at 2 pm May 29, 2004. The meeting was held in con-junction with the CBC Specialty Show at the LA County Fairplex, Pomona, CA.

The minutes from the last general meeting were read by Secretary M. Horstmeyer and approved as read.

Treasurer Tom White reported that the treasury balance is $14,993.35 and that the club made a profit of $4933.87 this year. Barbara Robben moved that the treasurer’s report be approved and Linda Langford seconded the motion. Motion passed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS: Field Trial: Bill Landress • Oregon Brittany Club will host the

Western Futurity • Northern Nevada Brittany Club will

host the Chukar Championship with the assistance of any willing CBC members (Linda Langford & Bill Landress have offered their help)

    • The Western Regional Shooting Dog Championship has not been sched-uled

    • The Western All Age Championship will be held in the White Mts of Ari-zona in August and sponsored by the Greater Phoenix Brittany Club

    • CBC Fall field trial will be held the last weekend in October at Califor-nia City or in the California Valley. Bill Leffingwell is researching the site. The gundog stakes at this trial will not be retrieving due to the lack of gunners.

Show: Linda Langford • Thanks to everyone for all their help

with making the show a success • The San Fernando KC was wonder-

ful to work with and gave us a great place to stage our activities. Thanks to their club and contact Jeanne Hen-derson

    • The weekend swap due to leap year made for the necessity of some quick decisions but it all worked out OK

Willi Match: Helen Harbour • Will Match will be held at Arcadia

Park, Saturday, August 21, 2004. Judges not announced

Club Championship:Tom White • Tom is looking at the 2nd weekend in

July (July 10th) and at Etiwanda Game Association or at Prado as locations to hold the event but that date conflicts with those who are going to the summer specialty and the Awards banquet will be held the next weekend. It was suggested that the dates be reconsidered

Awards Banquet: Rozanne Woelm • July 25th is the date chosen for the

gathering at McKenna’s on the Bay in the Long Beach Marina. The event will begin at 11:30 am and will be $26 per person. Rozanne has flyers with info about the banquet.

Website: Bill Hacker • Myra-Dawn Ellis is frequently updat-

ing the site as well as maintaining it. She requests that the membership forward pictures via email ([email protected]) to her for the website

Newsletter: Sharon Kalionzes • Deadline for the July 1st issue is June

15th so please send your brags for inclusion in this issue

    • Agnes Rodrigues extended a public thank you to Linda Langford, Sharon Kalionzes and Myra-Dawn Ellis for doing such a fabulous job on the newsletter.

Hunting Test: Karen Nelsen • Spring hunting test dates have been

    approved for February 26 & 27, 2005.

    • The San Diego Brittany Club has agreed to do a back to back event with CBC

    • Linda McDonald will be the hunting test secretary

    Nominating Committee: Agnes Rod-rigues

    • Committee members: Ed Dixon, Bill Hacker, Agnes Rodrigues

    • 2005 slate: • President: Bill Hacker • 1st VP: Nancy Schmeider • 2nd VP: Bill Landress • 3rd VP: Cindy Leffingwell • Secretary: Margaret Horstmeyer • Treasuret: Tom White

    • Motion to accept the proposed slate was made by Barbara Robben and seconded by Pennie Peterson. Motion passed.

NEW BUSINESS: Donations suggested/requested: • Linda Langford moved that CBC

donate $100 to the ABC Summer Specialty. Agnes Rodrigues sec-onded the motion. Motion passed.

    • Agnes Rodrigues moved that CBC donate $100 to American Brittany Rescue. Second by Sharon Ka-lionzes. Due to Diane Dale’s connec-tion to the pet food industry the do-nation will be matched by Petsmart Charities. Motion passed.

    • Linda McDonald moved that CBC donate $100 to the San Diego Brit-tany Club. Since SDBC’s Specialty show was cancelled, the club donated their raffle items for CBC’s raffle. Motion seconded by Pennie Peterson. Motion passed.

Craig Lewis: • Questioned CBC insurance coverage.

Is the club covered for retrieving stakes? The rider is for a year so yes we are covered for retrieving stakes but will not be having retrieving stakes at the Fall field trial due to a lack of gunners.

    • Requested that the minutes of the board meetings be published on the website

Margaret Horstmeyer: • Motioned that the club general busi-

ness meeting be held prior to the potluck to expedite the meeting as well as to get better member partici-pation. Susan Kerns seconded. Mo-tion passed.

The VP of Marketing for Cardinal Laboratories, manufacturer of pet sup-plies where Diane Dale works, wrote a book called “The Crazy Kids Guide to Cooking for your Pet.” The KTLA morning show decided to do a segment on the book, giving some examples of recipes from the book. They needed dogs to be taste testers for the treats. Out of several dogs that could have been picked from the company, Buster was one of the chosen.

He liked the treats, behaved himself on LIVE TV, and seemed to enjoy his few moments “ON AIR.” Those who watch KTLA morning show will rec-ognize Gayle Anderson with Buster. She hosts most of the “On Location” segments for the show. Congratula-tions to Dan and Diane Dale, and Buster on this TV debut.

Apologies to P. West, B. Scott & Agnes Rodrigues for the addition of the “d” into Jonnie’s name, in the Hunting Test write up. His correct name is CH Sanbar’s Curtain Call.

Speaking of apologies...Our apolo-gies to Art Weddell and Sandra Weddell-Jaqua for leaving the “d” out of new CH Sandbar’s Albanian Legacy. My typing skills are not the best!

    DELAYED CHASE (Formally OOPS!)

Buster buttering up to Gayle Anderson

Linda Langford: • Led a discussion as to the pros & cons

of holding the Specialty show in con-junction with an all breed show. Our options are numerous:

    • Go in with Pasadena KC - dates fol-low Memorial Day weekend, set ups are nice, may be more open to sugges-tions since their entry this year was down.

    • Mission Cluster: held over Memorial Day weekend. Is with other shows so entries are usually higher.

    • Hold show in Arcadia independently opposite from Pasadena KC

    • Hold show later in June (19-20). The Sat before Long Beach KC show op-posite the Great Western Terrier & Golden Specialties. Hold at an inde-pendent park.

    • Hold in conjunction with Shoreline KC in early May. This would conflict with the field trial dogs’ participation

    • Financials: when show held in con-junction with an all breed show, CBC doesn’t get any money from the en-tries & we have no catalog. Over all, shows don’t make money from entries and we hope for a break-even. The profits come from the raffle.

    • Holding the Specialty show with an all breed show maybe easier if there are not too many restrictions. If the sponsoring club is willing to work with us it’s great. In the past Pasadena KC put lots of restrictions on CBC.

    • Being able to have input on the judges is VERY important

    • What about a Friday night Specialty? • Bill Landress suggested that everyone

voice their opinion by voting for their choice

Motion to call for adjournment of the meeting was made by Bill Landress. A second was provided by M. Horstmeyer. The meeting adjourned at 2:45 pm. Respectfully submitted, Margaret Horstmeyer CBC Secretary

My parole hearing is Friday…I just gotta get out for the Willi Match!

  • The Show Committee urgently needs your feedback. Please take a minute to

complete this short questionnaire below by July 31st and return it to

Linda Langford, 13614 Faust Ave, Bellflower, CA 90706-2618.

There are no right or wrong answers, but we need to get the pulse of the General Member-ship in time to complete plans for next year’s specialty. Remember, this affects the date and location of the General Membership Meeting where we have our elections as well.

    1. Select one: I prefer the Specialty and General Membership meeting to be held in conjunction with an All-

Breed Show, where there are more professional handlers available, and the Best of Breed winner can go on to compete in the Sporting Group.

I prefer the Specialty to be held independently from any other breeds, where the CBC can control the schedule and judges, take more time between classes, where spayed or neutered veterans can compete for Best of Breed, and there are less crowds and better parking.

    2. If the Specialty were to be held in conjunction with an all breed show, please indicate your preference for clubs/dates:

Join up with the Mission Circuit. This provides 4 days of dog shows on the pavement at the Fairplex in Pomona over the Memorial Day weekend.

Join up with the Kennel Club of Pasadena and hold our specialty on Saturday (same day as we currently show) of the 2 days of dog shows at Brookside Park in Pasadena.

Join up with the Kennel Club of Pasadena, and hold our specialty on Sunday (same day as the Viszla and Wirehair specialties) at Brookside Park in Pasadena.

    3. If the Specialty were to be held independently from an all breed show, please indicate your preference for dates:

The same weekend as we have always had (AKC Week 22 which is usually the weekend follow-ing the Memorial Day holiday), even though it conflicts with the Kennel Club of Pasadena All Breed Show.

Postpone the Specialty 3 weeks to a date that does not conflict with an All Breed Show. (AKC week 25, which is June 19th this year, the day before the Long Beach Kennel Club dog show).
