Diwali popularly known as the "festival of lights," is a festival celebrated

between mid-October and mid-November for different reasons. For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. For Jains, Diwali marks the attainment of moksha or nirvana by Mahavira in 527 BC.

The name "Diwali" is a contraction of "Deepavali" (Sanskrit:द पावल Dīpāvalī), which translates into "row of lamps". Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps (diyas or dīpas) in Sanskrit : द प) filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. These lamps are kept on during the night and one's house is cleaned, both done in order to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome. Firecrackers are burst in order to drive away evil spirits. During Diwali, all the celebrants wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with family members and friends.

The festival starts with Dhanteras on which most Indian business communities begin their financial year. The second day of the festival, Naraka Chaturdasi, marks the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama. Amavasya, the third day of Deepawali, marks the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth in her most benevolent mood, fulfil ling the wishes of her devotees. Amavasya also tells the story of Lord Vishnu, who in his dwarf incarnation vanquished the Bali, and banished him to Patala. It is on the fourth day of Deepawali,Kartika Shudda Padyami, that Bali went to patala and took the reins of his new kingdom in there. The fifth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj), and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes.

Spiritual Significance

While Deepavali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning is "the awareness of the inner light". Central to Hindu philosophy is the assertion that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Deepavali as the "victory of good over evil", refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's t rue na ture , no t as the body, but as the unchang ing , infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening comes compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings anand (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Deepavali is the celebration of this Inner Light.

While the story behind Deepavali and the manner of celebration varies from region to region (festive fireworks, worship, lights, sharing of sweets), the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light (Atman) or the underlying Reality of all things (Brahman)

ENGLISH SECTION

ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED BY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Indians by nature are argumentative. The shashtrarthas con-ducted in Vedic age is a testimony to this fact. It was instrumen-tal in creating scholars and men of erudition and perdition. Continuing this tradition till now debates are conducted in school to draw out the thinking and logical sense of the stu-dents. This year the topics on which the four house debated were as follows: In preliminary round Sincerity house debated with Freedom house on the topic- RTI is opening of a can of worms. Friend-ship house debated with Honesty house on the topic – Common Engineering Entrance Exams will destress the students. Sincerity house and friendship house won the prelims round to debate in finals on the topic- Privatisation is the panacea to all ailments of development. Finally Friendship house won the de-bate with Sincerity house as runners up.

A CLASS WITHOUT TEACHER…!

When teacher goes out of the class

Then what happens next, please don’t ask Children move out from their seats

And start roaming like they are in the street.

Some make aero plane of paper And girls start talking to their neighbors.

They make funny noises and disturb the whole class. Some move out of the class, without any pass.

Boys and girls start throwing chalk at each other.

And make funny faces on black board further, Some will sing and some will dance without fear.

And whatever monitor says no one hears.

When teacher is about to enter, All the children stop their chatter………………

PEAK OF SPIRITUALITY The station was almost clear with a few figures wrapped in clothes. There was nothing visible because of the heavy fog. It was 10:30 p.m. and I was waiting with my family at the New Delhi station for Jammu Tawi Express, which was scheduled to arrive at 10:45p.m . We got in and I went to sleep, preparing for the tiresome journey ahead, to the peak of spirituality. The next morning, when I woke up, I was at the Jammu station with people from all the provinces around. We boarded a bus to Jammu and had the most beautiful jour-ney. We saw deep valleys, rivers and narrow bridges all around. There were rammed cars, lying beside the road. We saw big ‘step farms’ and nomads. Once we reached the place we could see river Son in Kashmir with large ice glaciers. We started climbing at 10:30 a.m and I ran away through the stairs, with my brother, and waited there for my parents; we randomly entered shops and sat there before they came. We gave orders and by the time the order was ready, we ran away. Sometimes I had to keep myself warm, otherwise the beautiful scenes of the mountains was enough to keep me warm. Some other people from different parts of India were shouting slogans and I too joined them. On the way back, I ran ahead of all with no one to stop me and when I looked back I thought I was lost. It was raining heavily throughout our return journey. It reduced the visibility and I didn’t stop walking and finally met them after waiting for about half an hour at the foot of the mountain. Before coming back , I vis-ited the Wagha Border in Amritsar from where I could see Pakistan army. I visited Kashmir too and played in snow. It was really a great journey and I’d never forget it.

THE PHOTOGRPAH

Far across a mile, appears a jolly face, little pains, grief but no complains

cheerful days passed, sweet memories cherished the silence blanketing all. Some ten fifteen year later

feelings arouse, smile appears on face the time was diwali, all lights and lamp lit,

she with my little sister on her lap gave a look at the camera.

My maternal aunt took the snap, in front of the small house.

No crowd, no crackers, no yelling a complete silence all over.

Today seeing the photograph she smiles as it was the first snapshot

with my sister who was just born the memories come alive as she stares living in thoughts the moments again.

SOMETIMES SOMEWHERE

Sometimes somewhere, I feel my passion is my profession… My heart goes back when I feel my confession…

Chipping of my life strengthens, my determination… Blossoms my path!

My rude past vanquishes my present modesty…

Is life too long to travel these to the shortest? Sometimes, somewhere I belong to my passion…

Now, my job is my biggest tension!!

I met compassionate people, they understood my pain… Sweetness of my mum was my only grain…

Although… sometimes, somewhere…

I lived for someone and my present is only for someone partially! I envisage of my new journey, but later entomb my enthuse…

I’m possessive for my passion… Although, why am I suffering for my every action??

The monotony Life at a glimpse, when taken as one day at a time seems extremely amusing. But look at the years, look at the days, aren’t they all alike? What if you had a little fun one day, what if you had a little excitement in an otherwise dull day; when you contemplate you find life’s monotony, the tedium nature of it that overshadows all the other things which make it adorable…..

Every dusk I see the sky turn red I hear the merry birds chirping

I feel the wind with its calmness and the earth groping the darkness

like a tree in spring, I whoop with my thoughts the bulk of leaves are my beloved ones

they’re in my satchel, with the straps cutting in not one to lose no choices to have

got to carry it along till the day I live with abysmal emotions and love for all.

Grievances of them I take compassionately obliterating their darkness, I jitter to fall.

My exulting parents, I’ve made them proud, though tomorrow begins with pride all zilch

the burden of obligations, never blots keeping me steady till every summit is sought.

Efforts and hard work when end in smoke as a seer I feel enervated

I draw inspiration from the ant on the wall and rise and run, whenever I fall.

I have my moments, I’ve my days, I sing and dance like spring ,but,

the monotony of life makes the flamboyance stray making me feel like just living till the judgment day.

THE TEACHER

When we are in the dark,

You show us the light;

When our ways become wayward,

You tell us the truth is might.

You give us the power of knowledge,

You give us the pearls of wisdom;

Even when the whole world disowns us,

In your heart we’re always welcome.

You help us reach the pinnacle,

While you stay in the background;

A more selfless person than you,

The world has never found.

You are our guiding light,

You are our omnipresent preacher;

You are no less than God himself,

We’re indebted to you O dear Teacher!

YOU DESERVE A LIFE

Through the dawn breaking, We see the world around us…... Emotion of belongingness and separation, Feelings of ostracism deepens me to depression... The almighty mends my soul, How to heal, how to feel world as a soul! After all you deserve a life, full of pain and assortment, Perseverance of greatness makes me feel great Sometimes I get exhausted by, the mighty roller-coasters... After all the almighty one understands my loneliness! I deserve a life, the vacuum of pain and relief. Burst into atmosphere... The air carrying the hope of commonness, Blossom my heart and vibrant my mind.

TRIP TO LADAKH CRADLE OF BUDDHISM

Ladakh is a land abounding in awesome physical features, set in an enormous and spectacular environment. Bounded by two of the world’s mightiest mountain ranges, the Kara-koram Range in the north and the great Himalayas in the south, it is transversed by two other parallel chains – The Ladakh Range and The Zaskar Range. Ladakh lies at alti-tudes ranging from about 9000 ft. (2750 m) at Kargil to 25170 ft. (7672 m) at Saseri Kangri in the Karakoram Range. Summer temperature rarely exceeds 27 C in the open, while in the winter they may at times plummet to -20 C in Leh. Surprisingly though, the thin air makes the heat of the sun even more intense than at lower altitudes. Ladakh was once covered by an extensive lake system, vestiges of which still exist in its south – east plateau of Rupshu and Chushul in the drainage basin or lakes of Tso – Mariri, Tso – kar and Panging – Tso. But the main source of water is win-ter snowfall. The Yak seems to be vey ferocious because it has two sharp horns and lots of long hair on its body. When Kargil was ensued, the army soldiers came to Ladakh for safety as it is an interior place, and started their military op-erations. The fair people become white there due to snowfall and cold air. The people who practice Buddhism preach there in monasteries.
