LettersHi JeffreyThanks so much for your generous

comments on my work. I only just gotaround to renewing my membership, and I hadn’t seen that issue of thenewsletter until today. The talk I wasready to give that icy night in Novem-ber aims to discuss the very point youmake - “the trick is knowing where toput the swipes”. I had been looking atwater, wondering how to get it to holdstill, and thought about Sargent’s won-derfully simple but convincing boatreflections. At first I was dazzled by thebrushwork, which seemed so exactlyright that it must have been divinelyinspired. After studying the work, though, it became clear that there wasreally nothing fancy about the brush-strokes at all.

The real inspiration occurred in theseeing and the thinking. He had discov-ered the approach that allowed himmaximum freedom in the actual paint

2 The Hot Press News ✺ March/April 2007

To style or not tostyle. That is the ques-tion. A friend of De-gas told him that amutual friend claimedto have found his stylein painting. Degasanswered, “Oh, what apity”. Degas loved toexperiment and per-haps it is no surprisethat he would answerthis way. Perhaps hewas afraid his friendwould stop growing asan artist if he stayedwith a style.

How do we find our style and is itimportant that we have one? Picassohad several styles in his long career, allof them successful.

So what does style mean? Does itmean unique? We have all seen paint-ings that were “different”. Does itmean shocking? Some Artists confusecreative and shocking. I think find-ing your style means knowing yourself.I recommend finding ways to do this.Meditation, introspection and spendingtime alone are all ways of learning whoyou are.

Cathy Woo, in an excellent article,“Find Your Personal Style” (WatercolorMagic, October 2002), talks about thework of Howard Gardiner who theo-rizes seven kinds of intelligence or gifts. They are space/vision, language, kines-thetic (body), mathematics, interper-sonal, relationships and intrapersonalawareness. Gardiner says we are giftedwith one or more of these and that theyinfluence the way we create. You canlearn more about Gardiner’s theoriesfrom his book, Frames of mind: A Theoryof Multiple Intelligence or visit www.mult-intell.com.

Do you know if you are predomi-nantly left or right brained? If you aremathematical and logical you are prob-ably more left brained. If you are moreconcerned with feelings and love color, you are mostly right brained. .

Your style will probably evolve asyou continue to paint. I know I havedifferent goals now than I did when I

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

EditorialOh No! A Nude!By Jeffrey L. Waters

Perhaps nothing is so gloriousas a tastefully executed nude yet werarely see one in any of our exhibi-tions. Are we embarrassed by thesubject? Are they just too difficult toexecute?

I highly recommend DonAndrews stunningly beautiful book;Interpreting The Figure In Watercolor. Now, out of print, it is available atAmazon.com. I bought my own.The Seattle library also has a copy.He also wrote the figure section inthe wonderful paperback antholo-gy, Everything You Ever Wanted ToKnow About Watercolor.

Don is insistent that the nude, like all subject matter, be fully inte-grated with the background andshould not appear “pasted onto thepaper”. He strives to “connect thelight” that embraces his model. Hiswife, Linda is his favorite subject. His work is breathtaking.

Daniel Smith offers life draw-ing classes as do several other loca-tions. Perhaps a few of us middle-aged Puritans could shake off ourinhibitions and have a go at it.Once you see Don’s book, you’ll behooked.

started painting. Picas-so started out as a real-ist and his workevolved into abstrac-tion by the end of hislife. I am suggestingthat we want to paintfrom the inside outand the outside in. Weneed to find the bal-ance between the two.Know yourself and usethat knowledge to findyour way in painting.Happy painting.

I have talkedabout finding venues

for those members who don’t oftenshow their work. The idea is to findrestaurants or offices in various parts ofthe Puget Sound area that are willing tohang paintings, then make a list somembers can choose a venue close tohome. Think this over. If you havequestions, email or call me.

application. Anyone could haveapplied the paint as he did. The otherhalf of the “trick” is being sure it willwork, so you can put down thosestrokes and leave them alone. It’s theconfidence that dazzles us at least asmuch as the successful illusion.

Thanks again for that unexpectedboost.

Bring Paintings to MeetingsLast month, members indicated that they liked the

idea of bringing one or two of their recent paintings tothe meetings to show one another. While a contestdoes not appear feasible due to logistics and lack of abreak time to hold a vote, it still will be fun to shareour work with one another. Bring in a painting youhave recently painted. We can display them around thewalls and create some interaction. Please note that forthe March 27th meeting, Joan Archer will be offeringher critique of paintings that members bring in.

RON RANSON, 2007 OPEN EXHIBITION JUROR,TO TEACH WORKSHOP

You can see more of Ron’s work on his website:http//www.ronranson.com.

THE WORKSHOPRon will teach us the use of his famous hake brush. His

method of teaching is both intensely enthusiastic and veryinformal. In the workshop, he will stress the eight principlesof design along with freedom of expression. His aim is tohelp his students produce watercolor paintings that are freshand powerful, with economy of stroke and a limited palette. He conveys his strong message with a very English sense ofhumor. Laughter is said to abound throughout his very pop-ular workshops. At the same time, his class is absorbingmasses of practical painting knowledge.

During each day of the workshop, he will do two or threedemonstrations and will also make sure that each and everystudent receives individual one-to-one attention from him.

Recognizing the opportunity to learn from a masterartist, members quickly registered for the workshop. It wasfilled by early January.

Call for Pig Painters!NWWS will again provide a pig for the prestigious Pigs on Paradeevent commemorating the 100th anniversary of Pike Place Market. The painted pig will be one of only 100 this year vs. 170 when theevent last occurred five years ago. The Pigs will be displayed start-ing in mid-May until mid-September. There will be a kick-offparade and festival on June 2nd, 2007 at Pike Place Market.

A committee has already met and come up with some terrific ideasof how to prepare our piggy for market - covered with paintings, ofcourse! Our theme is Pigments on Parade and will incorporate thecolor wheel and painted images of the market as well as depictions

of historical events over the last century. We strongly invite partici-pation from the membership. Come paint one of the 12 or so paint-ings that will be on the pig. Think of having your painting seen bythe multitude that will attend these events and view the pig over thefour months of summer. Then, the pigs will be auctioned off andbe on permanent display in a new home. For those who havealready painted pictures of the Pike Place Market, let us know andwe can incorporate those images on the pig.
