Remembering OPA Member

Robert Blaschke

Robert had a creative analytical mind andhe appeared to live in and from thatmind, but I remember his expressions ofkindness and warmth. He stayed at myhome for several nights when he wasguest lecturer for the Astrological Societyof CT. He was an easy house guest, clearabout what he needed in a nondemand-ing way. After his workshop on Saturdaymany of us went out to supper. Evenafter giving a lecture and a workshop,Robert was generous in discussing astrol-ogy and answering questions with eachperson at the table. He seemed genuinelyinterested in sharing everything he knew.He was a kind, considerate human being. Our profession will miss his Light.

also draw upon diverse traditions in science, philosophy, and religion to examine thenature and development of humanconsciousness from a cosmologicalperspective. At the heart of the programwas a question: If astrology works, whatdoes this imply about the nature of theUniverse? How can correlations betweenpsyche and cosmos best be explained? A variety of models would form the foun-

dation of the study, ranging from the Neo-platonic philosophy of ancient Greece tochaos and complexity theories of post-mod-ern science. Human change processes wereto be examined from multiple perspectives, including developmental theory, transper-sonal psychology, and archetypal astrology.Students would identify incremental stagesof growth and explore how consciousnessevolves through stages and crises that corre-late with planetary cycles. Most importantly, emphasis would be placed on traditionalwisdom that depicts the Universe as a greatchain of Being—a living, conscious, purpo-sive whole in which lower levels reflect byvirtue of their internal constitution thegreater Being of which they are a compo-nent part. This, of course, is the ancientdoctrine of the Macrocosm and the Micro-cosm, which purports that human con-sciousness is both an extension andreflection of a transcendent intelligence thatis immanent within all natural processes.

IN SEARCH OF A NAME

FOR AN EMERGING FIELD

After the courses and general framework ofthe TGI program were established, the onlyquestion was what to call it. We wanted aname that would honor the astrological con-tent of the program and reflect its cross-dis-ciplinary status as an emerging field—yet, notwave a red flag that could jeopardize its au-thorization by state agencies. Upon readingthe Archai journal and its definition of arche-

typal cosmology, it was obvious we were talk-ing about the same thing. Synchronistically, both Archai and The Graduate Institute weredescribing a new, multi-disciplinary field ofstudy that combined ar-chetypal astrology withmultiple other disci-plines— depth psychology, history, philosophy, con-sciousness studies, mythol-ogy, cultural studies, thearts, biography, and thenew sciences. In the inau-gural issue of Archai, theopening article by KeironLe Grice announced, “TheBirth of a New Disci-pline”. Indeed, this was ex-actly what we were doingat The Graduate Institute:participating in the birth ofa new discipline, heraldingan emerging field. The pairing of ‘arche-

typal’ and ‘cosmology’ issignificant. Archetypes areakin to Ideas in the mind ofa divine Being, universalpatterns of meaning thatserve as templates for phe-nomena at every level of the Universe. Theynot only inform and animate the psyche, butare operative in planetary movements, biolog-ical processes, everyday events, societal insti-tutions, and virtually anything we canexperience as human beings. Archetypes aremetaphysical principles that constitute thehidden, generative matrix of life, the within ofthings, the interiority of the Universe. Assuch, the word ‘archetypal’ alludes to theimaginal, symbolic capacity of the mind tomake meaning by constructing stories thatserve as metaphors for deeper, underlyingprinciples that exist beyond our senses or ra-tional intellect. Archetypal language harkens

back to earlier periods in human history whenmyth and story were our primary means formaking sense of the Universe. Conversely, the word ‘cosmology’ refers to

the scientific study of the ori-gins and structure of the Uni-verse, and relies upon anobjective, empirical way ofknowing to gain a more pre-cise, material understandingof that which unifies and isfundamental. For most ofhuman history, cosmologicalthought was formulated inmythological, religious orphilosophical language, butmore recently has become ascience that combines astron-omy, physics, and biologyinto a grand, all-encompass-ing account of the Universeas a whole. Cosmology is thebig picture, the mighty framethat pulls together all thepieces of the jigsaw puzzleinto a comprehensive model. It is important to understandthat cosmology is not simplyastronomy; it is the study ofcosmic forces and processes

such as space, time, and evolution; it exam-ines the evolution of energy into matter andmatter into consciousness. It investigatesthe physical constituents of that which isinfinite and eternal—the constants of Na-ture, laws that endure over long periods oftime, non-local forces that extend over largeregions of space. Whereas cosmology is the rational study

of all that is, archetypology is the imagina-tive study of the Universe. One deals withthe without of things, the other with thewithin. As an emerging field, archetypalcosmology bridges these two styles of rea-soning – the objec-

was a question:

about the nature

of the Universe?

tive/rational with the imaginal/symbolic—in a kind of sacred marriage that yields afuller, non-dual, panpsychic understandingof the relationship between psyche and cos-mos. Archetypal cosmology directly impliesthat all objective bodies in the Universe—from planets to subatomic particles—pos-sess an interior, subjective reality. Nature hasa within and a without; it consists of exter-nal bodies with internal experiences analo-gous to feelings, ideals, and intentions. Thevery words ‘archetypal cosmology’ suggestthat the Universe has an inner and outer di-mension, mirror images of the one realitythat is both Psyche and Cosmos. Clearly, archetypal cosmology covers a lot

of ground. It provides a model of theUniverse; yet, is a personality theory, too. It has philosophical ramifications, but alsoconstitutes a research methodology. As away of understanding people and workingwith clients, it extends to the practice ofcounseling. Given the complexity ofarchetypal cosmology, it might be useful tosummarize some of its main features.

NINE ESSENTIAL FEATURES OF

ARCHETYPAL COSMOLOGY

Correlates planetary cycles with archetypalpatterns in human experience.

Aspires to methodological rigor andepistemological humility in knowledgeclaims—thus, is research oriented, evidencedbased, and value-neutral.

Extends psychological astrology’s growthoriented perspective and renders more preciseits explication of the intrapsychic realm.

Situates astrology within an archetypalground, defining archetypes as cosmologicalprinciples that are both transcendent andimmanent, and which shape, inform, andanimate Nature at every level, within andwithout.

Recognizes the multidimensionality, intra-dimensional variability, and polyvalence ofastrological archetypes, which underscorestheir inherent indeterminism.

Emphasizes the co-creative, participatoryrole of the psyche in shaping behavior andattracting formative experiences, thushighlighting the self’s responsibility for itscontinually evolving fate.

Establishes synchronicity as the key tounderstanding feedback relations betweeninternal and external reality (as symbolizedby the horoscope); and for overcoming themodern dichotomy of a living, purposive, evolving self embedded in a dead, random, mechanistic universe.

Draws upon science, philosophy, andreligion in formulating a theoretical basisfor the observed correlations between psycheand cosmos, thus paving the way for abroader world view.

Focuses on the interiority (ensouled nature)of the cosmos—its consciousness, intelligence, and apparent teleology—and how thisinteriority is both the ground of psyche andthe basis for an interconnected, evolvingcosmos that is hierarchically structured andholonomically organized.

While these nine essential features could befleshed out and more fully explained, I trustthey suffice to provide a quick glimpse intothe general nature of archetypal cosmology.

ARCHETYPAL COSMOLOGY &CONSCIOUS EVOLUTION

While conscious evolution is not a formalfeature of archetypal cosmology, itconstitutes a natural complementation.Conscious evolution can be defined as theintent to cooperate with an evolutionaryprocess inherent in nature. Since archetypalcosmology recognizes that evolution is akey feature of the Universe, a major goal ofthe TGI program is to facilitate theevolution of consciousness througharchetypal pattern analysis. This involvesanalysis of the central archetypal dynamicsoperating in an individual’s life assymbolized by the birthchart and asmanifest in their character and everydayexperiences. Archetypal pattern analysis also

addresses individual responses to personaltransits as well as collective humanresponses to world transits. As the art of prognosis, astrology utilizes

planetary movements for predicting thequality, meaning, and duration of specifictime periods. Rather than simply describingevent-outcomes, however, planetarymovements can be depicted as windows ofopportunity for the actualization of natalpotentials. Concrete events both reflect andserve as catalysts for changes in awareness;thus, planetary movements can provideinsight into the precise timing ofdevelopmental processes, allowing us toappreciate how inner and outer realitycoincide, reflect, and transform each other. Courses in the TGI program include not

only the history and theory of astrology, butalso how astrology can best be utilized in acounseling setting. Students learn astrologyas a psychological language, diagnostic tool, and developmental model. Again, its value asan aid to conscious evolution is especiallyemphasized, most notably throughexperiential work that combines archetypalpattern analysis with personal mythology.Support for conscious evolution is built intoevery course, encouraging students tocollaborate with planetary cycles toward theunfoldment of their highest potential. This infuses the learning of astrology withtremendous, personal significance.

A column inspired by Uranus ...

for astrologers by astrologers! This column is a tool; it is a place to ask your peers questions about your

career in astrology and get answers that will help you to resolve current

issues you may have or be experiencing in your business. If you have a question

or concern and have been unable to acquire an answer through your own means, this column is for

you. We are here as a community to help one another on our paths as astrologers. This is one way of

giving back and keeping the connections alive.

Our goal is to respond to your question with a clear and direct resolution. We want you to be suc-

cessful in your practice and hope that we can make this column a service to you. It is not often

that you get to ask your colleagues what they think or what they would do in your situation. It is

nice to hear you are not alone. Astrologers need a home, a sense of community, and people who

know and understand what it is we do. It is my hope that this column will inspire and help

those in need.

I would like to explain to you the difference of the E-News and this column. The E-News

gets sent out monthly, while this column will be quarterly. Also, E-News will ask one ques-

tion to our members, which is not necessarily career based. E-News is sent to you by email,

and members respond to it by email. “Uranswers Here” is based solely on your astrologi-

cal business/career. This column is not asking the members a question; the members are

asking the questions. We respond by networking with OPA members to get the best ad-

vice in the business and bring it to you through this column.

There are three ways to send in your questions. The first way is by Facebook. We will

announce a month ahead of time for members to submit their questions. We will use

the Facebook platform to accept questions either by message or comment on the Face-

book OPA page. The second way is through our E-News. We will be asking members to

submit their questions when it gets close to the end of the quarter (Please make sure

to answer the E-News questions; which are separate from this column). The third way

is through direct email to Katrina Peters ([email protected]). You can send a

question to her at anytime. Towards the end of a quarter we will select a member

question to be published in The Career Astrologer. You may remain anonymous.

We will be exhausting all resources of our membership to make sure to answer your

question with the best advice. All astrologers are invited to participate.

Here is a question submitted by a fellow astrologer;

and here are URANSWERS!

In the last edition of The Career Astrologer we answered a question about gift

certificates; it was well received and with the feedback it gave us our next ques-

tion for this edition.

What do you, as a practicing astrologer, do when

someone asks for a refund?

I do believe that most of us do good work and do not encounter

this question often; however, when it does [CONTINUED ON PAGE 6]

Uranswers Here! By Katrina Peters

come up what do you do? The majority of astrologers I

spoke with had not been asked for a refund, and were

not prepared to deal with a client requesting one. Most

said that they would not give a refund, and wanted to

know ways to avoid experiencing the refund question.

One reason a client could ask for a refund is they were

confused as to what services you were

actually providing. This is why it is

important to clearly state your serv-

ices on your website, business ad, or

anywhere else you choose to adver-

tise. Make sure that when you have a

new client the time is taken to explain

what it is you do, and ask what it is

they expect from your time together.

Another reason that a client could

ask for a refund is their questions

and/or concerns were not answered

to their satisfaction. In the event that

this happens, politely apologize and

offer to revisit some of the topics/issues that were dis-

cussed. At this time you will also want to ask the client

what they felt was beneficial or most helpful. This will en-

able the client to see the positive aspects while giving you

insight to their thoughts. In the event that nothing ap-

peases them, ask them to reschedule an appointment

where you will answer those precise questions they felt

were lacking. If at this point they are still dissatisfied, it is

important to state that the information covered was ben-

eficial to them, and therefore no refund will be issued, but

you would be glad to reschedule another appointment

(you could even go as far to give a discount, depending on

the reciprocity of the client). Ultimately you will know if

the refund is warranted, and it will be at your discretion.

Of all the ways to avoid issuing a refund, the most im-

portant may be to state a cancellation policy. This is so im-

portant yet many astrologers forget to do this. There are

quite a few options; one is to have

them prepay with a “no refund

only reschedule” policy. Another is

to have a non-refundable deposit or

no deposits at all. To eliminate the

cancellation refund completely

would be to make the client pay at

time of service, but this doesn’t

guarantee that they will keep their

appointment. These are just a few

examples of how you can tailor

your cancellation policy to suit

your business needs.

Remember your worth, and that

your time is valuable. Just because someone asks for a

refund does not necessarily mean you should give one.  If

you do experience the refund question, check your work;

make sure it wasn’t something you could have avoided.

Some people are looking for deals or ways to get things

for free and will take advantage if they feel you are the

type to give in to this behavior. In case a refund is re-

quested, having a clear plan of action will allow you to

make a timely, professional decision on how to handle it.

This is a great way to protect you and your business from

potential loss of clients and income.

Uranswers Here! [CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5]

Remember your worth,

and that your time is

valuable. Just because

someone asks for a refund

does not necessarily mean

you should give one.

Remembering Robert Blaschke . . .Dear Robert, how we will miss you. You were such a star in the astrological firmament, and you were such a niceguy. You were so soft spoken and kind, so loving and generous with your mind and with the brilliant ideas thatyou thought. You were the best person to sit next to at dinner and your Pisces moon knew how to pick a goodrestaurant. You had innocence and great sophistication. I remember your giggle as you showed me the picture ofJesus you kept in the picture ID part of your wallet and telling me how you show it at airport security and makepeople smile. Your spiritual foundation was strong and real. I remember meeting you at NORWAC many yearsago. You were in some real life turmoil and opened up to me and we talked about your situation as well as mineand when we parted at the end of the conference you said “Thank you for being such a good friend.” It was a karmic meeting with anold love and every time we met we could pick up at that same level of intimacy. You gave me wonderful advice on relationship andshared your theories on how to meet a man. You were open about your relationship with Carol and the twists and turns it took. Andthen you got sick and I marveled at how brave you were in facing your cancer head on, how you didn’t stop working, how you triedto fight it with every tool in the alternative healing toolbox. I’m so sorry you lost the battle but know that you are alive and well andtalking and teaching in the other world. We have your books and writing and videos of you to help us keep you in our heart andminds. Thank you for all the work you did, thank you for being you. I will always love you. Arlan Wise

he River of Stars Astrology Confer-ence offered an experience of spiri-tually oriented Astrology whichincluded these fields among others;

Evolutionary Astrology, Shamanic Astrol-ogy, New Paradigm Astrology, Galactic As-trology and the new emerging field ofAstrological Cosmology. These are on thecutting edge of an evolving movement inAstrology reflecting our current transitionfrom the Piscean to the Aquarian age. Theyawaken us into the Promethean gifts thatare held within the divine or Anima Mundias described by Carl Jung.

The experiential nature of this conferencetook the participants on a unique journeythat brought us into closer relationship withthe sacredness of our own lives and our rela-tionship to our evolving consciousness. Ac-tivating archetypal knowledge, held in thecosmos, was mirrored in our own deep bodyknowing cellular memory. We were offeredan experience of Astrology which was newand potent, changing many of our lives aswe began to see the impact and effect of afresh, newly emerging potential. The setting for our conference was the

Kalani Retreat Center on the Big Island of

Hawaii, in a lush tropical rain forest. TheBig Island is described by Natasha Alter oneof the three organizers of this event as, “...apowerful teacher which through its vibrancyand force shows and leads us to our trueselves.” The force of the nearby Kilauea Vol-cano, which is also understood to be thedwelling of Goddess Pele, brings the fourelements together. This force in Natasha’swords, “calls upon us to step into our higherselves, the truth, grace and beauty of whowe are.” The conference took place in the Blue

one single-track format that allowed every-one to participate in all presentations. Inthis room, the forces of the natural elementsand their continuous change were evident. The weather moved from stormy rain andwind back to full sunshine two to threetimes a day. It was damp, wild and alive! Wewere all asked to pick a Hawaiian Oraclecard and read the meaning of it as we en-tered. This set the stage for each of our indi-vidual experiences. The conference was organized by Maurice

Fernandez, Tom Lescher and Natasha Alter.Natasha moved to Hawaii while there on avacation. She had planned to return to hergraduate school studies in California but sherealized that her greatest education wouldbe to live on this island and it would be-

come her “cosmology, philosophy and con-sciousness exploration”. Maurice and Tomhave now both moved to Hawaii to live, grow and continue this process with eachother and individually. They have producedsimilar gatherings in the previous two yearsand seem to be building momentum to-gether for future conferences and gather-ings. This conference was attended to itsmaximum capacity of approximately onehundred participants. Maurice wished us to have a “complete

experience”, bringing together environmen-tal emersion with Yoga and Astrology, cere-monies and community involvement as away of sensing, awakening and coming intoattunement with each other and ourselves.Maurice began by noting that we are enter-

ing a New Year with Jupiter moving intoAries. This movement is a doorway to “in-spiration, grace, and breakthrough forhigher consciousness”. Tom Lescher in-voked this spirit by saying “May the landand the water and dolphins and whales andstars and moon serve as a stage and an ex-ample of how we all live breathe and areunited as one”.The opening ceremony, graced with the

According to Natasha “Auntytuned in exactly without any prior agree-ment.” Maurice tried to ask her what shewould do before the ceremony and she re-fused and said “No, that is not how we op-erate, whatever comes through me from theancestors will be said.” She wholeheartedlyinvited us into the mysteries of Pele as Astrologers. She honored us by telling ushow her ancestors had foretold our arrival.“....one day they will come and they will talk about the stars”. Maurice’s opening presentation on

“Mastery and Madness” was beautifullyfitting with the constantly changing climatearound us. He shared how this evening didnot go as he planned. But it all evolvedmore beautifully than he expected. Hisfocus was on Neptune moving into Pisces. He believes that the ease occurred becauseof flexibility and trust. In this fast paced, rapidly changing world we must learn totrust or face crisis. As this change occurs weare asked to live, access and find our way

through chaos. Here the choices aremastery or madness. This Neptunianingress requires a new level of adaptation. We will need to be strong, to constantlyadapt. We will learn to trust ourselves andour raw nature for guidance in each day, each moment. We are entering a time ofsurrender. At the same time our intentions“create energy” which have a ripple effect. There is room for mistakes, forgiveness, andtrial and error. We are asked to try our bestto overcome our personal projections sothat we may be receptive in neutrality tothe Truth.Kim Marie, Director of the Evolutionary

Astrology Network, explored with us howUranus as it transits into Aries mid March, will affect natal Uranus in our charts. Sheexplained that Saturn stuffs what it does notwant to see into Uranus where old psychicpain exists in a crystalline form. Uranus inPisces brought up old memories whether wewanted to see them or not. As Neptunemoves into Pisces this trend will increase. This is an optimum time to break throughour old tapes and grow. As Uranus movesinto Aries it becomes the initiator of com-plete and unrestricted freedom. “One of the

best ways to track Uranian impulse is to no-tice spontaneous, eruptive thoughts or feel-ings and wait and see if it happensrepeatedly.” If so, it will be important to payattention and follow the direction of thisimpulse.Meditation was interspersed throughout

the conference. It was a well-received way torelax, let go of our thoughts and come intothe moment. Maurice and Tom led thesemeditations. Participants found that medi-tating was effective in letting go of thethoughts from our lectures. It encouraged usto move into a quiet, feeling, intuitive place. It seems as if a digestion of the materialcould occur during that time. MorningYoga practices were optional at the confer-ence. We discovered that the more relaxed, open and receptive we were the better wecould be open to new informationDaniel Giamario, creator of Shamanic

Handbook, Daniel acknowledges the link be-tween Astrology and Psychology throughArchetypes. In the pre-conferences, Danieltook participants out under the night sky andpointed out constellations. His direct rela-tionship with the stars, constellations, andgalaxies brought to life astrological arche-types in ways that helped us sense our inter-connection. This way of perceiving Astrologyallows the magic to be felt. We gathered at abeach where the lava moves out into theocean, creating new land. As night fell,Daniel pointed out and discussed the con-stellations of our galaxy. Among many fasci-nating celestial configurations, he pointed tothe constellation of Pisces, which was quitebeautiful that night. The two fishes are con-nected by a string of stars. He also showed usthe northern stars that once were alignedwith the earth poles. This directly related tohis conference presentation on the turning of the ages. Continuing with this rich tapestry of var-

ied experiences, Linda Tucker, the specialguest of the conference, shared her story. Sheis the author of Mystery of the White Lions;Children of the Sun God. Linda described thebeginning of her astonishing spiritual journeywhen being trapped in a dead engineopened-roof Land Rover with a group ofpeople surrounded by a pride of eighteenlions at night, in her native land ofSouth Africa. The lions were ag-gressive and the car was stuck. They had four shots left in a rifleand one flashlight with only thirtyminutes remaining on the battery.Everyone was terrified, they real-ized that at least one of them would end upconsumed by the lions. Then in the dark theymade out a figure walking barefoot throughthe lions which turned out to be an Africanwoman with a baby on her back holding thehand of a small child. They would come to know this woman as

Maria Kohsa, Lion Queen of Timbavati. Shewas a shaman and in a trance state got thetransmission from the lions that she needed

to come to the rescue of the stranded group. Her presence calmed the lions and allowedone of the group members to leave the carand seek help. Three years later, Linda wentback and found Maria and became her ap-prentice. Since that time she has dedicatedher life with great passion to rescue and pre-serve the rare and vanishing White Lions. She was invited to The River of Stars Con-ference to share her spiritual message that theWhite Lions have reappeared on the planetas a divine omen as we shift from thePisces/Virgo age to the Aquarius/Leo age.The White Lions have reappeared only inone location on earth, in Timbavati, SouthAfrica, a place that is exactly aligned with themeridian of the Egyptian Sphynx. Thismeridian is considered sacred according toancient African traditions because it is said tobe where life on earth first emerged. It con-tinues across the globe to actually meet thespot on the Big Island of Hawaii where theconference took place. The name of the con-ference “The River of Stars” refers to theMilky Way, but also to the Nile River and toa legendary subterranean river of gold that allflow along that same meridian. Linda hadherself the presence of a lioness, emanatingstrength, integrity and great love.Linda was also part of a ceremonial intent

and honoring which brought us more deeply

into the sacred. Along with her, was presentkeeper of the White Bison, Cynthia HartButton, who has a ranch near Bend, Oregon,U.S.A. where eleven rare white buffalo havebeen born, as was prophesized by NativeAmerican legends. These and other membersof our teaching team called in the energies ofthe four directions through their own lineage. This was to honor the ingress of Jupiter intoAries on Friday night January 21st. Many

different lineages sat in a sacred circle to-gether, called on their guides, nature spiritsand loving hearts to hold space for this newemerging energy as Jupiter moved into Aries. The presenters had varied styles from aca-

demic to experiential. Some were story-tellers, others worked with conceptual orpractical themes. Laura Nalbandian’s presen-tation on the Asteroid Ceres took us throughour pathways to find what really nurtures usand how our deepest longings for connectionwith ourselves and others are experienced,determined by Ceres’ placement in our owncharts. She also offered a talk on CreatingOur Own Reality: The Power of ReframingOur Story. Sol Jonassen also worked withCeres and focused on eating disorders as acall to liberate the feminine. Phillip Sedg-wick was unable to make the conference atthe last minute, but we did experience himon video as he gave a presentation onHaumea, the newly discovered dwarf planetnamed after a Hawaiian Goddess. MosesSiregar III moved us with an experience ofNeptune as it manifested in his own life.Later he gave another presentation of Loca-tional Astrology. All of these presentationswere exceptional! Maurice Fernandez, author of the books;

Neptune, the 12th House and Pisces, and Astrologyand the Evolution of Consciousness Volume 1, pre-

sented on the Aquarius Leo Age; Accepting the Spiritual Sacrifice. Theconstellation of the Water Bearer mov-ing towards the equinox points repre-sents the celestial waters, whichnourish us with spiritual insight. If we go back 2,000 years when the

Pisces/Virgo age began, we find that three reli-gions emerged at that time; Buddhism, Islamand Christianity. The three religions all em-phasized the Pisces concept that there is ahigher truth above material and ephemeralearthly attachments. In the course of establish-ing the transient nature of earthly attachment, these three streams of consciousness generateda disassociation from daily life. Earth existenceis perceived as inferior

in comparison to higher dimensions such asNirvana or Life in Heaven. In the Piscean age,the effort is put in transcending the ego andseeing it as an obstacle/distraction to higher re-alization. The Aquarius/Leo age shifts thefocus to realize the sacredness of the egowhereby having a healthy ego is essential toserving divine will. The ego is not an obstaclebut actually a vehicle of higher realization. Wemove from renunciation (Pisces/Virgo) to par-ticipation (Aquarius/Leo), ultimately to createheaven on earth. Tom Lescher developed New Paradigm

Astrology, which combines Evolutionary andShamanic Astrology. Tom uses Yoga, move-ment, Astrodrama and breath work to helpus feel and sense the Archetypes. We wereoffered two sessions of New Paradigm As-trology. The first session was Astrodrama. He made costumes and had masks for eachplanet. He chose ten people with a back-ground in Astrology to act out two partici-pant’s birth charts. The most exciting part ofthis experience was to see how accurately theinformation led to the central issues for eachparticipant. Both of the women who wereavid astrologers were surprised by how muchthey learned. It guided us through Astrologyas an intuitive process and showed us howthe archetypes are indeed within us, withoutthinking about them, present and waiting tobe expressed. In his second session, Tom guided us on a

New Paradigm experience of the signs andplanets. Beginning with Aries/Mars we ex-plored a physical, emotional journey. We weretaken into Yoga poses and movement withmusic in order to evoke the planetary energies. For Mars we moved into the Archer Pose andshot imaginary arrows. For Aquarius/Uranuswe did a circle dance looking into the eyes ofour fellow participants who now felt more likebrothers and sisters. Moving into our heartsthrough song, we entered a Piscean/Neptunemeditation. We experienced the Aquarian agewhere community and connection become in-creasingly important. He explained to me thathis intent is to get people into their bodies, to

“get out of our heads,” and feel. “ThroughYoga, movement, breath and music peoplewill remember what they felt while in a pose.”For example, Cancer as a sign will be remem-bered through getting into baby pose and verylikely this memory will hold and be moremeaningful then hearing it as part of a lecture. He sees astrology as a tool of understanding, which stirs up and makes the unconsciousconscious. Richard Tarnas is the founding director of

the graduate program in Philosophy, Cos-mology and Consciousness at the CaliforniaInstitute of Integral Studies. This sameschool is where the new field of ArchetypalCosmology, which includes Archetypal As-trology, has emerged. Richard Tarnas pre-sented on Friday evening and once again onSunday evening. He describes Astrology as aform, which takes us into an intimate rela-tionship with the spiritual nature of life. Theconnection is between the human soul andits desire to re-connect with a cosmic soul.“A kind of romance the universe has engagedin”. As astrologers we gain a “...Groundedspiritual assurance by being connected to thedeeper meaning...archetypal depth of thecosmos”. Our understanding of Astrologycauses us to be increasingly empathic. Ourown deep self-exploration is crucial to beinga good Astrologer and will completely shapeour capacity to assist others. We are akin toPriests and Priestesses in the lives of ourclients and need to take this responsibility se-riously. Our words, our readings give voice toan archetypal experience held within an indi-vidual. This is the gift of our work. The needto truly listen to our clients during a readingwas highlighted. Each individual has theirown way of working with the energies repre-sented in their chart. Each of us has the op-portunity to create an encounter with thesoul of the universe; the “Anima Mundi” aswe assist others in their movement towardswholeness. This conference was deeply felt and mov-

ing for many of the participants. It was not atraditional Astrology Conference. It was

more akin to an initiation into a mysteryschool. We were taken on journeys that en-gaged our logical minds and moved us intoour bodies, emotions, imagination and spirits. This experience assisted us in connectingwith the archetypes and seems an essentialpart of being a depth Astrologer. Here aresome of the participant comments: “I don’tknow if you realize how much this event, inall our lives, is going to carry us forward onthe path towards a global healing, towardsthe new Golden Age that is Earth’s destiny!”“I wanted to thank you.... This is among thebest experiences I have had at an astrologyconference. We all need to bring more magicinto our lives”. “...Experiential knowledgeisn’t even really what we are talking about.More like archetypal embodiment. It wasnourishing at an elemental level. I don’t thinkI will ever be able to go to a normal confer-ence again.” “It was the best trip of my lifeever. I will hold it in my heart forever.”

A ll of ushavebeen in-

volved in discus-sions about thescientific validity

of Astrology. Actually the question of valid-ity is different from the question of how sci-entific is astrology?Astrology is valid. This fact can be

demonstrated in many different ways, in-cluding all kinds of logical and statisticalproofs. The validity of astrology is rapidlycoming to constitute a cultural norm. How-ever, when we ask, “Is astrology scientific?”the answer is no! It is important to remem-ber that astrology is much more than a sci-ence. We tend to be grossly misleadingwhen we refer to it as scientific. The basicdifference between science and astrologybecomes quite clear when we examine andcompare the methods of research used bythese two disciplines. Counterposing astrological research

methods with those of science shows thatthe intended goal of astrological research isfundamentally different from that of scien-tific research. The formal intention of bothscientific and astrological research is to ex-plain happenings in terms of a systematicbelief structure. Here science stops, but as-trology does not. The goal of astrology ismuch more comprehensive and humanistic. The individual doing research is attemptingto do better quality astrology, which is dif-ferent from just trying to add quantitativelyto the corpus of existing information. It isimportant to understand this difference so

as not to make the mistake of assuming thatstatistical studies are the end of astrologicalresearch.Good astrology depends on a good as-

trologer. However, good science can be suc-cessfully applied to life by a technician. Thisis not true in astrology, where even practicalapplication is dependent on a good as-trologer. This is so because astrology is asynthesis of science and art. To call astrol-ogy an art is not merely to dub it with a nicetitle emphasizing that it is hard to do goodastrology. In astrology, we are always con-cerned with unique events. We are alwayslooking at the chart of a particular person. And as we know, “There can be no scienceof particulars.” In life, we are always dealingwith particular circumstances.Consequently, the central problem facing

astrology as a collective enterprise today isthe selection or perhaps recognition of aformal methodology, which will enable usto deal with particular circumstances. Itseems at first glance that astrologers areirreconcilably split into many schools ofthought on every conceivable issue: e.g.,rulership, house division, starting point ofthe zodiac, hypothetical entities (such asLilith, Vulcan, and the Transplutonianplanets), the use or misuse of minor aspects, asteroids, midpoints, the vertex, perihelions, asterism, lunar and planetary nodes, theArabian points, to name only a few. However, all of these disagreements can bereduced either to a difference in personalpreferences or to a difference in method.Matters of personal preference or taste arereally nothing to argue about. When

astrology is considered as an art, we canreadily see that there is room for more thanone technique. It would be ludicrous if allpainters had to paint pictures in the style ofVan Gogh or Rembrandt, or for that matterif someone as versatile as Picasso wereexpected to paint every picture in the samestyle. It often happens that whenastrologers argue very technical points witheach other they are doing this very thing, which is to try to enforce their owntemperamental or stylistic preferences. There are numerous types of examples

available to illustrate stylistic preferences.Reference to a case history will do nicely.Once I had a client that I had to postponeseeing several times. This was necessary be-cause her natal chart presented a problemthat I could not resolve. Her chart wouldnot “come together.” One day on an im-pulse, I pulled out the asteroid ephemerisand put the four-charted asteroids into hernatal chart. Instantly her interpersonal rela-tionship problems became quite clear. Orderand symmetry lying dormant in her chartcame into focus. She had Juno conjunct herMoon, which “fleshed in” her complex rela-tionship to her mother and her attitude to-ward her fiancé. Once the connections hadbeen seen, I could have found the same in-formation without the asteroids. Although Ihave worked with asteroids, I don’t usuallyplace them in individuals’ charts. In thiscase, the asteroids became part of my tech-nique for delineating a chart. Further, it ismy contention that most differences in as-trology today are precisely of this type. Theyare preferential dif-

ferences even when they are cloaked inwords that make them sound as if they weremethodological. The differences expressedby siderealists, cosmobiologists, and tropicalPlacidian astrologers are, by and large, dif-ferences in preference for a particular tech-nique.A real difference in method, while rarer, is

much more consequential and rudimentarythan a difference in mere technical prefer-ence. Whereas two of us using two com-pletely different techniques may arrive atthe same information, with the end resultsdiffering only in emphasis, a differingmethodology ultimately puts us in two dis-ciplines that are similar in name only. (Per-haps I am overstating the case, but someotherwise unwarranted stereotyping will benecessary in order to abbreviate this ex-tremely intricate problem.)

The Hypothetical, Deductive Method

There are some people in “astrology”today who adhere either explicitly or implic-itly to the hypothetical, deductive (H-D)method. This is the “scientific” approach. The methodological axiom is simple: form ahypothesis, collect pertinent data, and makea correlation with the hypothesis. This formof research is archaic in today’s world, but inastrology it is more than archaic – it’sridiculous. Why? The H-D method implic-itly denies the whole metaphysical founda-tion of astrology. That is to say, it deniesastrology since astrology at root is a meta-physic. Consequently, the H-D method, when applied to astrology as a standard, en-tails a formal logical fallacy, which I willdemonstrate. All sound astrological research adheres to

what I have labeled the retroductive, intu-itive method. The word “retroductive”comes from Aristotle’s Prior Analytics andrefers to one of three types of inferences: de-duction, induction, and retroduction. The

H-D method utilizes deduction and induc-tion, but not retroduction. If we compare retroduction to the two

other forms of inference – induction anddeduction – we will get a clear picture ofhow well suited retroduction is to astrologi-cal research. When we make a deduction,we merely extend a principle. In astrology, the principle would be planetary influences. For example:

1st premise – Venus in the seventh housemeans that the individual will have ahappy marriage.

2nd premise – John has Venus in theseventh house.

Conclusion – John will have a happymarriage.

Clearly this form of inference will neverdo as a foundation for astrological research. We will all agree that Venus in the seventhhouse makes it more likely that an individ-ual will have a happy marriage. However,Venus in the seventh may mean somethingentirely different in John’s life. He maynever marry, or Venus may be poorly placedby signs and very afflicted. We could keeprefining our premises with many qualifiersto ensure success in our judgment, but to doso would be to limit so much the materialthat could be considered that its applicationwould be trivial. In other words, it wouldbecome a specific instance of many princi-ples that have no application at all save one:John’s chart. What we are looking for areprinciples that have wide applicability.“There can be no science of particulars.”The problem underlying rigid deductive

reasoning in astrology is that the planets aremetaphorical symbols and not singular intheir meaning or application. Since astrol-ogy is a system of metaphorical symbols, itdepends on the astrologer for its applica-tion. It requires a consciousness to perform

the creative act of synthesis. By conscious-ness, I mean subject. All perception is con-tingent upon a perceiver. All experience iscontingent upon an experiencer. Subject, perceiver, person, experiencer, and con-sciousness are all roughly synonymous, but“consciousness” refers most directly to theinner component of experience. Herein liesthe logical fallacy. Adhering to the H-Dmethod implies that consciousness is not abasic component of experience because itconsiders only the objects of experience andnot the subject. When the H-D method isapplied to astrology, we are in effect using itto prove that consciousness is basic to expe-rience. This belief is basic to astrology. Con-sequently, this method of verificationdisproves its validity as method if it can ver-ify its hypothesis. If the method is not valid, then the conclusions drawn from themethod can’t be valid. When using the H-D method, astrological premises are true if,and only if, they are false.

The Inductive Method

Now let us look at the inductive methodfor astrological research. In practice, induc-tion is generally reduced to statistical analy-sis. Although this is a simplification, herewe will consider “statistical” to be basicallythe same as “inductive.” In the precedingexample, we entertained the idea that Venusin the seventh house gives a happy mar-riage. This premise as a hypothesis will beextremely difficult to subject to a statisticalstudy, as happiness is very difficult (if notimpossible) to express or define in quantita-tive terms. How can we judge if someone ishappy? Suppose we ask them and they lie ormake a serious mistake due to a temporarymood, which confuses their judgment? There are many more problems which termslike “happiness” present to any statisticalstudy; but every astrologer would agree thathappiness is an important component inlife. Objective sources won’t help us makecorrelations on happiness because its condi-tions are so personal.

The longevity of marriage is often thoughtof as a testimonial of happiness. But, manypeople who are not necessarily happy withtheir marriage are married a long time, and ashort marriage is not necessarily an unhappyone. For these reasons and others like them, people that are “sold” on doing astrologicalresearch this way will, as a rule, choose itemsof experience that are externally verifiablesuch as profession, achievements, accidents, travel, etc., and, in astrology, there are manyitems of experience that never will be fit forstatistical study. Now suppose you have found that a cer-

tain set of planetary aspects occurred in thecharts of 80 percent of the people who diedof cancer. On the surface, this is a very im-pressive statistic and of some potential use.Uninterpreted, however, it remains useless tothe astrologer. All clients with these key as-pects in their charts may not develop cancer.Further, those clients who do have cancermay not have the cancer configuration. Un-less the astrologer is able to use the researchand regress the results to the essential under-lying principles, he is better off not trying toapply the research to his own work. The sta-tistical research that Michel Gauquelin didon professions and planets, is extremely im-portant in helping astrology gain a betterpublic audience, but it isn’t of much practicalvalue to an astrologer. The principles behindthe effect are necessary in order to do accu-rate and worthwhile astrology.

The Intuitive, Retroductive Method

When we do astrological research, we useinductions, we make deductions, but stillthe core of our analytic work is retroduction.(Sometimes this term is translated as “ab-duction” or “reduction.”) In his Prior Ana-lytics (Book II, Ch. 25), Aristotle has said:By retroduction we mean an argument in

which the first term clearly belongs to themiddle, but the relation of the middle to the

last term is uncertain though equally ormore probably than the conclusion; oragain an argument in which the terms in-termediate between the last term and themiddle are few. For in any of these cases itturns out that we approach more nearly toknowledge. In other words, we work with restricted,

logical certainty but with more applicability. We work more holistically and lessatomistically. We start with specificinstances and look for internal continuity. We select some tentative hypothesis thatwill allow us to work back to someunderlying principle. Having discovered theprinciple, the “scaffolding” that allowed usto get to the principle becomes only ofhistorical interest. In brief, this form ofdoing research is retroduction.Retroduction, “the logic of discovery,” triesto place new information into a systematiccontext which will allow that informationto be explained in terms of pre-existingtheories and fundamental hypotheses.Whereas induction is satisfied withdescription of events without explanation, and deduction is direct inference ofexplanation with no description ofparticular events, retroduction is the logicalprocess of describing and explainingoccurrences. Because of the tightinterweaving of describing and explaining, there is no separation of theory andpractice. Application is a necessarycomponent of research. The word “intuitive” is intended in the

sense in which it is used in the BhagavadGita. That is, we have three cognitivefunctions: instinct, intellect, and intuition.Instinctual consciousness is symbolized inastrology by the Moon. It has beenassociated with cellular memory, the past, animal consciousness, the cognitive basis forsense perception, and sensation, all of whichare metaphorically accurate. Intellect issymbolized by Mercury, which (with Saturnas a catalyst) organizes sense impressions

into thoughts. Uranus is the mostprominent symbol of intuition. Intuitionsare made from intellections but arequalitatively different, just as intellections(by analogy) are made from senseimpressions but are qualitatively different. When a person is really doing astrology,

he is making judgments based on intuitions, not on intellections. This is not to say thathe is doing something careless, sloppy orinaccurate. Intuition is none of these threethings. Just because a scientist may do muchempirical work before he makes anyintellectual judgments, should we thenconclude that his judgments are reducible tosense impressions? Historically, there havebeen those who have made the mistake ofthinking that, because intellections can beanalyzed in terms of sense impressions, intellectual judgments are likewise reducibleto their historical origin in senseimpressions. This is, of course, the logicalextension of a line of thought, which doesn’tinclude consciousness as a basic componentof its cosmology. And this is definitely the “nub” of the

difference. Historically the H-D methodwith which “hard” science is associated doesnot include consciousness as a basic. Thus,it does not include people. Consequently, the center of the astrological frame ofreference for the “scientist” is an aggregateof attributes, which is to say that the thingsa person perceives become more “real” thanthe perceiver. To the astrologer the reverseis true. The individual is the primary reality. The world that the individual lives in has areality that is dependent on him. This is theunderlying metaphysical difference betweenthe H-D method of science and theretroductive, intuitive method of astrology. To paraphrase Abraham Maslow, thequestion that we must ask of ourselves asastrologers is not “Is astrology scientificenough?” but instead “Is science astrologicalenough?” The answer in 1975 is a definitiveNO! With the growth, refinement, andfurthering of astrological precepts, in a fewyears the answer may be yes.
