October is a great time of the year as temperatures begin to cool and kids have been back in school long enough to settle into a routine of reading assignments and homework. Some of us adults have been busy reading too—at least if you’ve been following along with the PBS series The Great American Read. The series returned to WHRO TV last month with new episodes, but this is the month that it comes to a close and we learn which novel has been named as America’s favorite. Tune in Tuesdays at 8 p.m. for the remaining episodes: “Villains and Monsters” (October 2), “What We Do For Love” (October 9), “Other Worlds” (October 16) and “Grand Finale” (October 23).

If novels don’t interest you, we have plenty of other great offerings this month. Music lovers will enjoy a Grammy Salute to Music Legends 2018 (Friday, October 5, 9 p.m.) from Great Performances and a special about violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman (Sunday, October 14, 10 p.m.) from American Masters. If you are more interested in learning about nature, check out NOVA: Volcano (Wednesday, October 10, 9 p.m.) or Nature: Super Cats (Wednesdays, beginning October 24, 8 p.m.) Finally, fans of Masterpiece can continue to enjoy the new seasons of Poldark (9 p.m.) and The Durrells in Corfu (8 p.m.) on Sunday nights.

I am also excited about our newest educational series, GreenBeats. This kid-friendly series of animated shorts focuses on critical environmental issues and themes. If you enjoyed the old Schoolhouse Rock! series that taught children lessons on math,

grammar, history, and more, you’ll love these short segments. Full of fun animated characters and catchy songs, the episodes we’ve produced so far are already becoming quite popular. You can watch new episodes as they are created at whro.org/greenbeats

Speaking of things that children will enjoy, I hope you will join us on October 6 at the 30th annual Virginia Children’s Festival in Town Point Park. Stop by WHRO’s PBS KIDS Village to meet Nature Cat and Jet from Ready, Jet, Go! Kids will also have fun exploring our interactive science station and playing a new game focused around recycling. PBS Kids morning host Mr. Steve will also be performing twice on the event’s main stage. The festival takes place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The event is always a highlight of the year for our staff and volunteers.

A new series combines modern science and scholarship with Native American traditions and oral history to bring to life the world created by America’s first peoples. Weaving history and science with living Indigenous traditions, Native America recalls a land of massive cities connected by social networks spanning two continents, with unique and sophisticated systems of science, art, and writing. Made with the active participation of Native American communities and filmed in some of the most spectacular locations in the hemisphere, the four-part series illuminates the splendor of a past whose story has for too long remained untold.

The series highlights intimate Native American traditions and follows field archaeologists using 21st century tools such as multispectral imaging and DNA analysis to uncover incredible narratives of America’s past, venturing into Amazonian caves containing the Americas’ earliest art and interactive solar calendar, exploring a massive tunnel beneath a pyramid at the center of one of ancient America’s largest cities, and mapping the heavens in celestially aligned cities.

Each hour of Native America explores Great Nations and reveals cities, sacred stories, and history long hidden in plain sight. In what is now America’s Southwest, indigenous people built stone skyscrapers with untold spiritual power and transformed deserts into fertile fields. In upstate New York, warriors renounced war and formed America’s first democracy 500 years before the Declaration of Independence, later inspiring Benjamin Franklin. Just outside Mexico City, the ancient city of Teotihuacan is home to massive pyramids built to align with the sun and moon. On the banks of the Mississippi, rulers also raised a metropolis of pyramids and drew thousands to their new city to worship the sky. And in the American West, nomadic tribes transformed a weapon of conquest—the horse—into a new way of life, turning the tables on European invaders and building a mobile empire.

The producers of Native America were given remarkable access to Native American communities, going behind the scenes at special events, including a pilgrimage to ancestral ruins at Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, a trek across lost territories in the American West, and an investiture ceremony for a chief in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by cedar totem poles and centuries of tradition. Tribal members and descendant communities, whose ancestors built this world, share their stories, revealing long-held oral traditions as the thread that runs through the past to these living cultures today. The series will air on Tuesdays beginning October 23 at 9 p.m.

After the long, hot summer (to borrow a movie title), the arrival of autumn has brought with it not only the anticipation of cooler, refreshing weather but also the expectation and excitement of the new arts season. Arts organizations across Hampton Roads are gearing up for presentations that will continue to prove how culturally rich and diverse our area is. As usual, WHRO-FM will be in the thick of things, adding to the quality of life in the region with great music, information about exhibitions and concerts, and broadcasts of all things Virginian on our new series A Local Touch, Wednesday evenings with Raymond Jones.

WHRO-FM has for many years broadcast productions of Virginia Opera, which has already opened its season with their first-ever production of Kurt Weill’s

It’s going to be a crowded field of contenders for the best music of the year when all is said and done at the end of 2018. I’d like to put in my vote early because some of my favorite artists have all released stellar recordings this year. Old Crow Medicine Show, Death Cab for Cutie, Ray Lamontagne, The Decemberists, and Devotchka all have a special place in my heart because I began playing them in their earliest incarnations, and they continue to impress with their latest recordings.

Out of the Box is a show on 89.5 WHRV that celebrates the evolution of rock and roll by playing all new rock, Americana, and blues every day with a heavy emphasis on the album as an art form. I’ve been hosting the show for close to 15 years and have developed a tradition of presenting a month-long retrospective season beginning the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Each

Street Scene. Likewise, our relationship with the Virginia Symphony goes back decades, and we will continue to bring you outstanding performances by the orchestra, conducted by JoAnn Falletta in this, her penultimate season with us, as well as by new Assistant Conductor Gonzalo Farias.

Virginia Stage Company’s 40th season has opened with a show about a favorite singer from the Old Dominion, Patsy Cline, and this month the curtain will go up at the historic Wells Theatre on Thornton Wilder’s beloved Our Town.

There are many other performances and presentations planned all across the region this season and we will do our best to keep you apprised of them. Additionally, members of our staff will

show delves into a different category of the music I’ve been playing. Along with the usual suspects of the best songs, albums, and artists you’ll hear “the most extraordinary collaborations,” “the coolest cover songs,” “the most noteworthy debut albums,” and “the top local artists.”

Since I began the show in 2004 I’ve been extremely proud of giving Hampton Roads listeners the first chance to hear artists who have gone on to great success over the years. Expect to hear a lot from Old Crow Medicine Show’s Volunteer, Death Cab for Cutie’s Thank you for Today, Ray Lamontagne’s Part of the Light,

be performing in and hosting some of these events, as WHRO-FM continues its mission of being an integral part of the arts in Hampton Roads.

Looking Forward to a New Arts Season

2018, It’s Been a Good Year... for Music

Coastal Virginia is experiencing the highest rates of sea level rise on the East Coast of the United States. Hampton Roads is a part of the global effort of coastal communities that are measuring tide levels as a way of preparing for sea level rise. As part of a new initiative, local students can take part in this important work.

WHRO Education in partnership with the Hampton Roads Community Foundation is offering $500 stipends to more than 100 local high school classes to participate in the Flood Mapping—Building Resilience in Our Communities project, an initiative to map flooding on school campuses and neighborhoods during the 2018-2019 school year. Mapping both tidal and non-tidal flooding will help communities plan for mitigation and resilience efforts.

Students in the selected classes will conduct quarterly measurements using a free Sea Level Rise app. In addition, they will prepare presentations on sea level rise, flooding impacts, or a similar

topic and submit a signed pledge form committing to do their part to create a community that is resilient to flooding. Students will analyze the data collected and then submit it to scientists at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to help enhance the accuracy of their tidal inundation models.

“Not only is flood mapping essential to helping scientists and community planners better understand recurrent flooding so that they can develop strategies that will help mitigate the problem, it’s a fantastic way for students to become the resilience leaders of tomorrow and use their science knowledge in a real-world, hands-on activity,” explained WHRO Chief Education Officer Brian Callahan.

WHRO is also conducting hands-on training sessions for local educators who want to learn how to use the Sea Level Rise app to map flooding. During the session, teachers learn strategies to help communities and schools develop resilience to tidal and non-tidal flooding.

They also explore lesson plans and resources that can expand students’ understanding of resilience efforts and strategies for connecting with resources in the community that can reinforce what is taught in the classroom.

WHRO also invites students as well as the surrounding community to participate in the second annual “Catch the King” event on October 27 when one of the highest tides of the year is forecast to impact Hampton Roads. Last year’s event attracted more than 500 participants who gathered data to help improve predictive models for forecasting future flooding events. Learn more at whro.org/kingtide

WHRO is now in the third year of spearheading the Wall of Faces Initiative, a statewide search to locate a photo for every one of the 1,307 Virginian names listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and post online on the Virtual Wall. The search has made incredible progress, and since WHRO started, friends, family, and people who care about this cause have taken on the mission and found 400 photos, leaving only 152 remaining. The Hampton Roads area alone has 35 names missing photos.

We are so close, but we still have work to do. We all have a responsibility to

Remember Rosie the Riveter? This historic World War II icon was a patriotic call to action to recruit women to enter a traditionally male workforce and fill the holes left by men going to war. By the thousands, women supported the war effort and began working in factories building ships and airplanes, driving fire engines, and much more. By 1943, women made up over half of the aircraft industry’s workforce, and by 1944 women held 33 percent of manufacturing jobs. Ever since World War I, women have proven themselves capable in these jobs, often referred to as skilled trades.

Now it is time to look to recruiting women again as America is facing a huge shortage of workers in skilled trade jobs. These are great opportunities for women who are looking to get to work right out of high school. According to Careerschoolnow.org there are significant benefits; female full-time workers with a bachelor’s degree earn a median annual salary of almost

$40,000, but experienced women in trades can make over six figures in just a few years, without the burden of a four-year college student debt.

One place to start is to consider what these jobs really are: rewarding careers. A new label is starting to emerge to replace terms such as “middle skilled” or “skilled trades,” and that is “skilled careers.” We need to emphasize they are not just

jobs, but also occupations that offer the employee growth in their field and an income that can provide for a comfortable life and support a family.

Yes, there are challenges too as the attitude around women in these jobs needs to catch up to the 21st century, and women may experience discrimination, harassment, and pay inequity. A woman I know who works in HVAC reflected on these challenges and said, “To all the women in typically male-populated fields, I say this: keep at it. With every new skill you learn, you’re opening the door for the next woman to take your place.” As Amelia Earhart once put it, “The most effective way to do it, is to do it.” To learn more, go to whro.org/americangraduate

On Saturday, October 27 at 10:00 p.m., Doctor Madblood presents his 43rd anniversary Halloween special, MB 43. The Doctor and his gang emerge from the depths of the Pungo Swamp to present a Roger Corman classic stinker from 1961, The Last Woman on Earth.

The film was shot on location in Puerto Rico with the cast and crew from his previous film Creature From The Haunted Sea. The screenplay is by Robert Towne, who also plays a shady lawyer in the film, under a nom de guerre.

Towne also wrote Creature from the Haunted Sea, and went on to write the Academy Award-winning screenplay for

Chinatown, considered by many critics to be among the best film scripts ever written. He gained Oscar nominations for writing The Last Detail and Shampoo, and a lot of critical praise for Tequila Sunrise. He also penned scenes for Bonnie and Clyde, The Godfather and Mission Impossible.

Doctor Madblood puts his gang back together to celebrate Halloween with all the usual nonsense. His pals Dusty and Count Lacudra (both Mike Arlo), his nurse Velma (Susie Passanisi), and of course Brain (Craig T. Adams) will present plenty of foolishness. Plus the doctor’s monsters will be running around inside the film.

The Sybil of the Swamp (Jewell Willis) will appear with two of her witch-sisters (Lori Pucher and Lauren Sundarajan). We can expect trouble from this year’s troublemaker Mana-Jerka (Craig T. Adams) and Pungo Police Officer Hardas (Shellee Casiello). The entire program will be announced by PJ the DJ (Bernie Melton).
