On the Feast of the Ascension, the Orthodox Church does not merely com-memorate an historical event in the life of Christ. On this day, the Church celebrates Christ's physical departure from the world and His glorification with God the Father.

For forty days after His Resurrection, Jesus remained on earth. Filled with the glory and honor of His Divinity, He appeared to His Disciples at various times and places. By eating and drinking with His followers and conversing with them about the Kingdom of God, Jesus assured them that He was truly alive in His risen and glorified Body. (The glorification of Jesus refers to His Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven. When we speak of Christ's glorified Body, we refer to Its honor, splendor, majesty and visible radiance - it gave off rays of bright light!)

The time span of forty days is used symbolically in the Holy Scriptures and by the Church to indicate that an appropriate amount of time has passed for "completeness". [The rains of the great flood lasted for forty days. Christ prayed in the wilderness for forty days. We fast for forty days to pre-pare before the feasts of the Nativity and the Resurrection.]

Ascension falls on the fortieth day after the Resurrection. On this day, Je-sus appeared to His Disciples and gave them His last commandment - to preach the Kingdom of God and the repentance and forgiveness of sins in His name to all nations, beginning with Jerusalem. Then He led them out of

Jerusalem toward Bethany to the Mount of Olives. He lifted up His hands and blessed them. As His Disciples were looking on, He was lifted up - or "ascended" - and a cloud took Him out of sight. While they were looking up, two angels in white robes appeared and said to them: "Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus, Who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen Him go there."

The Ascension is, therefore, a sign and symbol of the Second Coming. Christ will return to the earth in the same manner as He left it. When the risen Lord returns again in glory, God's will for mankind will be fulfilled.

Jesus completed His earthly mission of bringing salvation to all people and physically was lifted up from this world into heaven. The meaning and the fullness of Christ's Resurrection is given in the Ascension. Having completed His mission in this world as the Savior, He returned to the Father in heaven Who sent Him into the world. In ascending to the Father, He raises earth to heaven with Him!

Before He ascended into heaven, Jesus told His followers to remain in Jerusalem because in a few days they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit (see Acts 1:1-12 and Luke 24:13-53). Christ ascends to heaven and sends the Holy Spirit to the world. The

Spirit comes to reconcile and reunite the world with God. Christ's Body is in heaven and His Spirit is here on earth. Ascension is also a sign of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The Symbol of Faith - the Nicene Creed - which summarizes the important doctrines and teachings of the Church, contains these words: "And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father." The importance and meaning of this feast is that Jesus glorified our fallen and sinful humanity when He returned to the Father. In Jesus, Who is perfect God and perfect man, man is reunited with God. At His birth, Jesus took on our human nature. Through His Ascension He deified this human nature by taking His Body to heaven and giving it a place of honor at the right hand of the Father. With Christ, man's nature also ascends. Through Christ, man becomes a "partaker of divine nature" (II Peter 1:4). When Christ became man, He took up human nature and we share our human nature with Him. It is through Christ, Who is perfect God and perfect man, that we "partake of divine nature." When we say that Christ is sitting at the right hand of the Father, we mean that man has been re-stored to communion with God because Christ gives His humanity - which He shares with us - a permanent place of honor in heaven. Christ honors us by putting us close to the Father. We celebrate the Ascension with the same great joy the Apostles had when they were promised that the Holy Spirit would come to bear witness to the presence of Christ in the Church. Ascension day is joyful, not only because Christ is glorified, but also because we are glorified with Him. We are joyful because He goes to "prepare a place" for us and because He is forever present before the Father to intercede for us. Troparion of the Feast (Tone 4): You ascended in glory, O Christ our God, and gladdened Your Disciples with the promise of the Holy Spirit. And they were assured by the blessing that You are the Son of God and Redeemer of the World! Kontakion of the Feast (Tone 6): When You had fulfilled Your dispensation for our sakes, uniting things on earth with the Heavens, You ascended in glory, O Christ our God, departing not hence, but remaining inseparable from us and crying unto them that love You: I am with you, and no one can be against you. (This article is reprinted with some minor editing from Ascension and Pentecost, Commission on Religious Education, Ro-manian Orthodox Episcopate, 1975.)

YOUTH MINISTRIES By: Father William Redmon

Christ is Risen!

In May, our GOYA and HOPE/JOY chapters celebrated the end of the 2015-2016 year, but we have two exciting programs over the summer to which I would like to call your attention:

St. Nicholas Summer Camp: The St. Nicholas Summer Camp is an exciting opportunity for the youth of our parish to form lasting friendships with other Orthodox youth from around the Metropolis. This year, the Camp will run from July 24–30, at Camp NaCoMe, in Pleasantville, TN. A bus will be departing from Cincinnati to help ease the burden of travel. Those wishing to take the bus must register by June 15. Please go to the camp website (www.stnicholascamp.org) to register, and for fur-ther information.

Vacation Church School: Vacation Church School is an opportunity for children (grades K–6) to encounter their Orthodox faith in a fun, intensive environment. This year, the theme will be Heroes of the Bible, and the children will be learning about heroic tales of faith from the Scriptures and the Early Church. They will also be crafting their very own, Bible-themed “hero costumes” throughout the week. VCS will take place the week of July 18–22, from 9:30 AM–12 PM. To register, please con-tact Fr. William or the Holy Trinity–Saint Nicholas office staff.

Please stay tuned for further announcements about summer outings and activities. May the Risen Lord continue to bless, keep, and protect you all!

-Fr. William

OVER FIFTY CLUB…Ann Jonson

We hope everyone had a nice Easter and Mother’s Day!

We had a nice group at the Red Lobster in April and had a member who rejoined. Welcome back Evgenia Pastroumas. We had some delicious cheesecake for dessert for a change.

Yea, we finally made it over the 100 mark. As of April 16, we have 102 paid members. Thank you to all of you who have paid your dues. If you have not paid, you can do so anytime.

Our sympathy to Nick and Millie Hodges on the passing of Millie’s mother, who was 102 years old. May she rest in peace.

Happy Father’s Day!

DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE…Vera Manolakas

Christos Anesti!

The Daughters completed their year with a social event at their May meeting. Everyone had a good time playing bingo, winning white elephant prizes, and eating pizza. It was an enjoyable end to the year.

On the business side, the chapter elected their new officers for the coming year. Vera Manolakas will continue as presi-dent and Patti Neuendorf will continue as treasurer. Joining them new this year is Vice President Elaine Snyder and Secre-tary Tina Poulos Kasidonis. Our Officers of the Board are Helen Nicholas, Irene Zigoris, and Jay Williams.

Christos Anesti!

The Ladies of Philoptochos would like to thank everyone for their support this year. As we break for the summer, we will put our energies towards helping with the Panegyri. We will be selling our new specially designed apron before and dur-ing the festival. They are of excellent quality, durable and fun. They make wonderful gifts and are perfect for everyone who cooks or grills. Ask any Philoptochos member and they will help you.

Have a wonderful Panegyri and safe, healthy summer.

PHILOPTOCHOS…Georgianne Gaz

The recipient of the Viola Christopher Scholarship this year is Christina MacAskill. Christina is completing her first year as a medical student at Case Western Reserve University.

We would like to thank everyone for your support of our tsoureki fundraiser and Mothers' Day memorial and artok-lasia. Our Fathers' Day memorial will be June 12 this year. Please contact Helen Nicholas, 513-697-0583, if you would like to remember a loved one for Fathers' Day.

We have planned two outings for the summer, one in July and another in late August. If you're interested in learning more about Daughters, join us on one of these outings. Just let Vera or Elaine know. Have a wonderful summer everyone!

42nd Annual Panegyri By Eugene Nicholas

IT’S PANEGYRI TIME! There are less than 4 weeks until the Panegyri! As the festival draws near, our volunteer needs continue to grow. Please check the Sunday Voice and your email for volunteer needs. Our Panegyri is led and run by our volunteers. In many cases you already know where you want to work. Please take a moment to contact your booth chair and let them know your availability. If you have not picked a booth to volunteer in yet, feel free to contact the Church Office at 513-591-0030. We will help direct you to the booths needing the most help. Let’s support the volunteers who have stepped up to chair a booth and help them by offering your time and talent. The Panegyri is our largest fundraiser of the year. The proceeds fund 30% of our operational needs. We need EVERYONE’S help to make it successful. Please consider volunteering for our 42nd Panegyri.

Dear Parishioners: What you feel in your Heart, what you believe to be True, what you worship in your Faith… can be found in our Church Book-store. As a good Steward of these beliefs, you can offer Service to your Church by donating a little time to helping us to keep our Bookstore active as well as a living relic to our children. Every age can volunteer in our Bookstore, including those of you with school children; you are welcome to bring them along while you are volunteering. Witness a wonderful opportunity to teach them the meaning of Stewardship. They will understand their relationship with God, parents, friends and acquaintan-ces better. They will learn that Stewardship is nurturing and necessary in the management of our lives, both now and hereaf-ter. Stewardship reawakens our spirit to the joy of duty and obligation, and the realization that everything we do should be centered in God. Upon entering our Church Bookstore, your eyes will be filled with the enrichment of spiritual books as they surround you. We are increasing items in the Children’s Section. These books will be enlightening to your children; for those who are not yet reading, we have wonderful picture books. For those children who are learning to read, we have books that teach about the Divine Liturgy and books that can help the children follow the Divine Liturgy. There are books about the Lives of the Saints and about the Miracles of JESUS CHRIST. We have books about the Great Holidays and prayers the children should learn and practice in their daily lives. Teenagers can find answers to their many questions about friends and their social world. This is the age in which they need to read about good examples of living -- clean and wholesome people who they can exemplify in their own lives. We have modern day Saints who have written books that are motivating both spiritually and advisedly. Adults will find books that can guide their daily concerns. Books that can fill a void they may be experiencing, and books that give solace in the loss of a loved one. Every day we find objections and complaints, but these books will give you answers. We have many books written by the Holy Fathers of Orthodoxy. You can find books on the Divine Liturgy, the Holy Bible, the Holy Sacraments, and books of Prayers and Teachings. Your senses will be enraptured with the beauty of an array of icons. We have seven shelves of icons. In the first shelf are icons of The Holy Trinity, the life and death of Jesus, His Miracles, Parables, and the Archangels. In the second shelf are icons of the Blessed Virgin. In the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth shelves are icons of The Saints which are in alphabetical order in the English language. In the seventh shelf are icons of the Old Testament; Prophets and Depictions of Stories. We also have prayer ropes, incense, incense burners, charcoal, holy cards, and the Prosphora Seal. We want to welcome you into the Bookstore that was created for you and your family. We are open following the Divine Liturgy every Sunday, excluding Holy Pascha. We stay open until 12:30 p.m. so that you have time to enter following the Divine Liturgy, yet still have time to enjoy cof-fee hour. Currently we have a handful of volunteers. We wish to invite any of our Parishioners, who may want to volunteer, simply let us know and we will put your name on the Volunteer List where there is an available time slot. Show your stewardship through your time working in our wonderful Bookstore. In CHRIST! The Church Bookstore Volunteers

Parish Council President's Message

by Nick L. Sarakatsannis

Wow! It’s June already. You know what that means-PANEGYRI! This is what Panegyri means to me.

P is for PRIDE. As a member of the Greek Orthodox community, I am very proud that we put on the best and most well

attended ethnic festival in the city. I am sure we all feel this way and that’s why we come together in such numbers to

make this event such a success. Way to go team!

A is for Alithos Anesti! Truly He is risen! If not for Christ the church wouldn’t exist and neither would this festival.

Christos Anesti!

N is for “Nostimo”. The Greek word for tasty and delicious. Our families and volunteers provide the best food in town!

E is for Everyone. We need everyone’s help to make the Panegyri successful. Our festival is for everyone. We have food

and entertainment for all ages.

G is for Greek Orthodox. That is why I am here as well as many others born and raised in this community.

Y is for Yiasou! I want to propose a toast. “To everyone’s health and to a successful Panegyri weekend!”

R is for Resolve. It always amazes me how as a community we continue to raise the bar no matter what obstacles we face

and work together as a team to produce an even better event. A dear friend to us all continually said each year “It’s go-

ing to be the same as last year but only better!” May Frank’s memory be eternal.

I is for Involved. If you are not. It is time. Working or setting up for the Panegyri is a great way to become a part of the

community and to get to know your fellow parishioners. If you are involved, thanks in advance for making it better each

year.

Nick

Friends,

I am very excited to have the opportunity to share God’s love with the kids

of Albania for the second year in a row! On this trip our team will be travel-

ing to Children’s Home of Hope in Slen Vlash, Albania on June 7-20th, 2016.

The Home of Hope began in 2003 with the goal to serve as a safe home for

children in need in Albania. During our stay we will be participating in shar-

ing the love of Christ with the children through assisting in the running of a

summer youth camp. This is my second trip with this team and OCMC;

based on last year’s trip, I will be coordinating activities, helping the kids practice their English, sharing my knowledge and

experience of my faith, and caring for the children.

My hope is to allow Christ to work through me to let them know how much they are loved even through their current situa-

tions. I am incredibly excited to also learn from them. I have become so aware of how I let things of this world control how I

feel and my life in general. I learned that I need to clear worldly things so that I can focus on my relationship with Jesus. An-

other big thing I was able to learn through the trip is what it means to do everything in the Glory for God. Corinthians 10:31

says “So, whatever you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory to God.”. I experienced this first hand by growing

physically tired when serving the kids and just felt so encouraged and reminded that I am not doing it for my own glory but

for the glory of God. This feeling of living and doing something for God was the most fulfilling thing I experienced and is how I

try to live my life. I am trying to raise $3,000. OCMC is not able to help with the cost of the trip. I will need help from my com-

munity.

To find more information on OCMC and my trip you can go to ocmc.org. To send any gifts for the trip you can click on the “Orthodox Missions Teams” tab. My name will be under Youth Work in the Albania section. Or you can send a check to 9471 Canyon Pass Drive, Hamilton Ohio, 45011. Thank you for your consideration and time. Please give me a call! I'd Love to tell you more about it! 513.571.1049

STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE By Eugene Nicholas

As the Panegyri draws near it is easy to lose focus of the stewardship needs of the Parish. 2016 has started off as one of the best stewardship years for pledge commitments and donations received. Donations re-ceived in the first four months have nearly covered all of our operational expenses year to date. This is a major step towards our ultimate goal of covering all of our expenses through Parishioner stewardship.

Typically, June and July are the lowest months of the year for giving. We normally receive on average less than $20,000 in each month. This is less than one-third of the funds needed to run the daily operations of the Church. That is why many times we have needed to borrow money in June to pay operational expenses. Our Panegyri pre-festival expenses are usually covered through our sponsorship program. This year could be different. Based on your generosity in the first four months of the year, we could break the trends of years past. Remember that we will no longer have Car Raffle revenue coming in after the festival. It will be up to us to sup-port our Ministries through the rest of the year. Can we do this? We all know the answer to this question is “Yes, of course we can!” Our Parish has a history of stepping up when the need arises. Currently, we are running a Capital Improvement drive, which has raised over $192,000 in commitments, while still seeing an increase in our stewardship giving. It is not too late to fill out a pledge card for 2016. Let’s move forward together to eliminate our dependency on the Panegyri.
