Hello Everybody.
Well June is upon us, when the fruition of winter days crafting appear on many
village fete stalls and the season of weddings is in full swing. We have our own,
small, but special wedding this month when our daughter gets married. Jars and
bottles have been painted and decorated, bunting made and ideas for a quick
decoration of the rooms for the reception are in full swing. I have discovered that the
mention of wedding seems to add noughts and extra pennies to quotes, What I
really want to know is at what point in our history did the wedding become more
important than the marriage?
If you are getting married or are involved in a wedding this month, I wish you a happy
day full of lovely memories for the future. Gina

CYSTITIS
Symptoms of cystitis are burning pain when passing urine and a desire to
pass urine more often. Although caused by bacterial infection, cystitis can
often be cured simply by drinking plenty of extra fluid. Cranberry juice is
often recommended.
Antibiotic treatment
If cystitis persists for more than three days you may request a prescription
for an antibiotic without making an appointment: just ask at reception or
dispensary. A nurse will contact you to discuss the symptoms and arrange
treatment.
When to see the doctor
If cystitis occurs in a man, a pregnant woman or a child
If you have blood in your urine
If symptoms do not settle after treatment
Urine Specimens
A treat without testing policy is the most cost-effective way to treat
cystitis so a urine test is not needed unless there has been previous
treatment failure. If a member of staff asks you to provide a specimen she
will give you the appropriate container and a plastic pouch to seal it into.
Please ensure that your name and date of birth are written clearly on the
container.
Biohazard
Specimens of all sorts (urine, stool, sputum) could present a hazard to our
staff unless correctly packaged in proper containers sealed inside plastic
pouches. Please do not expect reception staff to accept specimens in the
wrong type of container or without a protective pouch.

'Please, don't misunderstand me'
'Please, don't misunderstand me.' It's a common enough phrase! Have you ever
pondered on the number of words that begin with the letters mis? Mis is a prefix of
course that can be put before many words in our everyday language mostly with a
negative meanings especially when it comes to good communication.
We mis-conceive, mis-read, mis-construe, mis-hear, mis-understand, therefore we can
easily miss the point and indeed miss out!
The language, the words, we use are so important if we want to communicate well. We
do use other ways of communicating with one another we can express our meaning in
the way we use our bodies a handshake, a shake or nod of the head, a smile etc. But
communication is very difficult without words! Ever tried it? Remember those games of
charades at Christmas with the family?
The dictionary defines the prefix mis as: fail - to catch an object, (ball, bus, train) fail to
meet a person, fail to see, hear or understand. Failure to communicate can lead to two
more 'mis's' mistrust and misery.
If 'mis' is so negative what would its opposite be? Well, I suppose 'catch' or 'get' might do
it.
We catch the ball, bus, train, or get the ball, bus, train ie we 'get it'! When
communicating that means we get through to somebody, we get our message across.
If we can all do that, at least more often than not, we might 'get along' with one another
much better and together we might even 'get there'!
All of us miscommunicate sometimes, quite unintentionally. It encourages me to know
that Christ himself was probably the most misunderstood person ever. Even his own
disciples often misunderstood him. When speaking to his disciples he regularly seems
to say to them things like 'do you still not understand?' If Jesus needed to try hard to
communicate with his disciples then how much more must we mere mortals try to
communicate with one another!
So strive to communicate well. Try not to be misunderstood or misunderstand.
A woman and her four-year old son were in church. Her son yelled out Mummy I have to
pee Shhhh his Mum hissed we don't say that. We say I have to whisper.
The next week the little boy was again in church with his Dad. He leaned over to say
Daddy, I have to whisper Just whisper in my ear his Dad replied!
With love
Revd. Jane

LEZIATE PARISH COUNCIL REPORT
th
The Parish Council met on Wednesday 13 May 2015 for the Annual Town Council
meeting.
Cllr Tony Crane was duly elected Chair and Cllr Ray Barnett as Vice Chair. Cllr
Beales attended as the newly elected Borough Councillor.
This was the first meeting of the new Council elected after an uncontested election.
Cllr Crane gave a report of the last year
The annual accounts were approved and declarations of office were all signed.
Our PCSO was again unable to attend as she has been seconded to King's Lynn;
we very much miss her input and enthusiasm and look forward to her being back on
our beat!
It was reported that the pot holes in the village hall drive are getting bad and it was
agreed to get these repaired.
The play area was discussed and it was felt that the equipment is out dated and we
should be looking at refreshing at least some of the equipment. Cllr Barnett agreed
to look at this and see what equipment would be good and then see what grants are
around and perhaps have submit a programme of improvements over the next few
years.
Cllr Coke attended the meeting and announced that Leziate has been included in
the next round of funding for fibre broadband. On questioning, Cllr Coke it didn't
seem clear how many properties this related to and if it was Leziate or Ashwicken.
It was agreed that the Clerk will contact the officer at NCC in charge of this rollout
and try and get some answers before next meeting. Cllr Coke felt that we should
also be able to have input into the positioning of the cabinets as recently there were
some issues with this in Blackborough End.
With all the usual annual business concluded the meeting closed. The next meeting th
will be on 10 June 2015 at 7.30 in the Village Hall.

The April meeting was held on Tuesday
21 April. We all dressed in red, white and th
blue to honour Queen Elizabeth's 89
birthday. We sang the national anthem
after singing Jerusalem, and all felt very
patriotic. 12 members were present, with
5 apologies. Member Violet Giles
brought an oasis in a container for each of
us to create a flower arrangement.
Violet also brought along lots of lovely
flowers and greenery, which we were able
to use. Everyone enjoyed this and some
lovely arrangements were completed.
Violet judged these, awarding first to
Eileen Baxter, second to Ann Rainbird,
and third to Betty Alpe. Eileen thanked
Violet for all the work involved for us,
especially the oasis in the containers. It
made everything easier. We all felt quite
proud of the end product. Joan Brown
won the raffle. Tea hostesses were Mary
Ryan and Wendy Twite.
Myrtle Roberts and Margarette Whiskin
were our delegrates for the Federation
Day in Norwich, where everyone was
welcomed by the Lord Mayor.
Many reports were given and a talk by our
national chairman. Norfolk Belles Choir
provided the entertainment.
Some of us are attending church flower
festivals at Dersingham and Walpole St
Peter. They are always lovely days out.
We do like to have visitors to our monthly rd
meetings, which are held on the 3
Tuesday of the month at 2pm in Leziate
Village Hall. All are very welcome.

Learn, Laugh, Love and Be the Best that
you can Be!
We were delighted this term to see the
trees, that had been taken down, turn
in a dragon and castle sculpture play
area. The smaller branches have been
put in our woodland for den building
and the wood chippings used as topping
for our pathways so nothing has been
wasted!
We were very fortunate to have enough
money in our capital fund to complete
the project. It really is a fantastic
addition to our lovely grounds.
We hope to hold an official opening of
the area later this term. In the
meantime, if you would like to take a
closer look please come and visit or
take a look at the photographs on our
website.
We were pleased to have over 30
runners taking part in the GEAR this
year. The rain poured but our children
and parents were brilliant as ever and
ran to raise money for Megans
Challenge.

GAYTON W.I
President Penny welcomed members and guests to the May meeting, especially Pat
Watts of Grimston W.I. who will act as our delegate at the Centenary AGM in the Albert th
Hall on 4 June. The Resolution to be voted on at that meeting calls on the Government
to remove the distinction between nursing care and personal care in the assessment of
the needs of individuals, in order to advance health and wellbeing.
Pat gave a clear account of the reasons for this Resolution after which members gave a
majority vote in favour. W.I. members have resolved and campaigned on many social
issues over the Institute's 100 years existence and its representatives are often called
upon to advise Government and other bodies on these matters.
Although the AGM will take place in the Albert Hall it will be shown live by video-link at
various venues all over the country. A group of Gayton members will be attending such
a meeting at Sheringham. The Centenary celebrations have been highlighted in the
media recently. The home-made Centenary Cakes which were going to be given to the
5000-strong members in the Hall are now being distributed by Federations to such
members on their way home. This is because the Albert Hall wanted to charge a
'sampling charge' due to some of the ingredients being donated by commercial
companies, this being acknowledged on the boxes. This clashed with the Hall's sponsorship rules. As well as tons of the usual ingredients it was said that the 44 W.I.
fruitcakes have 'enough rum in them to paralyse a fleet of pirate ships'! Members are
enjoying watching the six-part drama 'Home Fires', shown on ITV on Sunday evenings.
This is based on the book 'Jambusters' by Julie Summers and centres on the role of
Institute members in the supply of preserves in WWII.
After welcome refreshment, members were entertained by readings of self-penned
poems by Andrea Lorriman, Jan Newman and Kath Roberts. Arrangements were made st
for those attending the Walpole Flower Festival on 1 June, an annual event always th
enjoyed by our members, and a Safari Lunch on 16 June in Gayton.nd
Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 2 June at 7.30 pm in the Jubilee Hall when we
will be given a talk and demonstration on relaxation. Why not come and relax with us
ladies, you will be made most welcome
Andrea Lorriman
Charles Fosgate
Dione and the family were overwhelmed by all your cards, letters and kind
messages after the sad loss of Charles.
We would like to thank you all so much and to those who attended his
funeral on May 14th. The donations for Tapping House are still to be
counted.
Your support has been so appreciated by us all. Thank you. Much love

A Message from the Vicar
Anyone passing the churchyard in the past few months will have
noticed various changes and activity there. However, it seems that
there has been much concern and misunderstanding about what is
happening. We have reported on this in the March and April
magazines this year but there still seems to be some confusion and so
I apologise if communication has not been as good as it should be.
Please be assured that the churchyard is NOT to be left unmanaged or given over to
wildlife. The PCC, along with you all, very much want Gayton churchyard looking
immaculately maintained.
We are trying to create some small areas within the overall management of the
churchyard for wild flowers and it is hoped this will help the existing wildlife in the
churchyard and indeed attract more butterflies and birds and be an enhancement not an
eyesore!
The draft scheme identifies a 2mtr strip along the north front boundary wall (by far the
largest area and which in the past has had to be strimmed as it is too uneven for the
mower) plus two very small areas where there are no visible graves on the south west
side near the kissing gate.
We are very keen that any areas left uncut in order to develop wildflower patches will be
clearly defined with a good 'edge' so that there can be no interpretation that it has simply
been left. No marked graves (however ancient) will be affected. Local villagers who are
helping with the plan will carry out the necessary maintenance to these areas including
strimming twice a year at the correct times in July and October and clearing away the
greenery.
There are number of factors affecting the churchyard at the moment which mean that
currently it is not looking its best - an understatement I know! This may have led to
people thinking we are leaving it all to nature! The problems are:
1. The builders who have been on site now for over a year have caused deep ruts and
they have spread soil (spoilage following drainage works) over some extensive areas.
These are to be made good and reseeded (by the builder hopefully) and returned to
short mown grass.
2. Our contractor who strims the 'areas the mower cannot reach' including the older part
of the churchyard and round unattended headstones is unable to continue.
3. Our two excellent volunteers who use the ride on church mower (Lester and Trevor
to whom we are very grateful) and who keep the areas which can be mowed neat and
tidy have both been out of action.
Please be assured these are temporary issues and the PCC are working hard to find
'stand in' volunteers and to find a new contractor for the strimming.
We are grateful to those who do a great deal to help to keep our churchyard looking
beautiful and cared for, some of you have done so for many years, and to all who
maintain their loved ones memorials and contribute to this valuable work.
It is much appreciated.

Conservation update .....
Back in September 2014 the Norfolk Wildlife Trust in partnership with the Diocese of
Norwich identified St Nicholas' Churchyard as being a potentially great site for wildlife as
part of its Churchyard Wildlife Scheme and ran an evening information and training
session which several local people attended. This led to initial work on identifying
suitable areas to maintain for native wildlife. These areas in Gayton churchyard will be
relatively small and the scheme aims to enhance the churchyard and will have a
management plan. This summer we will begin to record all species of plant and animal
found here, with Norfolk Wildlife Trust support. All interested are very welcome to be
involved this is a whole community project.
It has been rewarding to see the first red campion flowers in bloom in areas that have
been left uncut. Early butterfly species rely on the nectar from campion and with
increased pressure on our environment it is rewarding if our churchyard can be a haven
for wildlife like this.
The first year of the project is very much a 'wait and see' time. Areas that have been
continually enriched and fertilised by mulched grass clippings will certainly grow lush
nettles and other larger plants in this first year that can overshadow rarer species. When
these areas are cut it is important to clear all the cut greenery away, leaving the soil with
less nutrients, which will encourage the less dominant plants to take hold.
Of course we will be assessing whether the areas that have been left 'natural' are in
suitable and sensible areas. Simple canes in the ground are not a permanent fixture and
this project needs to evolve slowly We have received very positive comments on the
project from many, but some have expressed concern about areas chosen to remain
uncut, so we have obviously respected their wishes and adapted accordingly.
th
On Monday 27 July, at 10am, the wildflower areas will be getting their first cut. The
Gaywood Valley Conservation Volunteers have kindly agreed to lead this for us and of
course everyone who is interested is very welcome to join in. Tools and refreshments
provided The second cut of the year will be in October.
The compost bin is for all plant waste from the churchyard. If you have grass clippings or
faded flowers (minus wrappers) please feel free to put them in here.
Gayton Brownies are looking forward to constructing a minibeast hotel underneath the
silver birch trees in June.

Now for a different sort of recipe!
For those of us trying to avoid chemical overload this is home-made 'vaseline'
Put cup of beeswax: 1 cup of olive oil into a glass jar and place in a saucepan of
warm water, bring to a simmer and with some protection for your hand shake the jar
a couple of times until the beeswax is melted. Carefully pour into a suitable container
and use as you would Vaseline. If you are using this for lip balm, you can add a
couple of drops of your favourite essential oil.

Easy Lemon Drizzle Cake
You will need a 2lb loaf tin preferably with a non-stick liner and a skewer or cocktail
stick.
Ingredients: 175g self-raising flour: 1 tsp of baking powder:
150gms of caster sugar or sugar substitute:
finely grated rind of 1 lemons: 125gms of soft butter: 2 medium eggs
1 tsp of lemon extract: 2 tbsp of milk
For the topping: Juice of 1 large lemon: 75gms of sugar.
Pre heat oven to 180c/gas mark 4
Put all the cake ingredients into a bowl and beat with an electric hand mixer for 2
minutes. Tip the mixture into the lined loaf tin and level the surface.
Bake for 50mins or until the cake springs back after being lightly pressed.
Whilst the cake is baking prepare the topping by mixing the topping ingredients
together. As soon as the cake is out of the oven, prick deeply all over and spoon
topping all over the cake. Leave to cool in the tin. Enjoy!
And finally: The late Spike Milligan once said:

They're only little holes; that's why rain is thin

All Saints' Church News
Work, funded mainly by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has started on the tower, and will
continue for about six months. It will not prevent people from visiting the church,
except when the heating is renewed later in the year, but please be careful in the
churchyard, as at present there are scaffolding poles lying around. Before the masons
start work, the honey bees in the tower will have to be removed!
During British Summer Time the church is open on Saturdays, and for the first week
in August it'll be open every day. We hope to hold holiday activities for children then
and there'll be a poetry reading, (not too highfallutin') too.

St Cecilia's Church, West Bilney. Flower festival!
On the weekend of 20th and 21st June, there will be a mini flower festival at the
church, with the theme of music, as `St Cecilia is the patron saint of music. The
church's historic books will also be on display. The oldest one dates from 1710 and
was given to the church by Elizabeth Freke. These books have amazing historical
interest - in the oldest book, the name of Queen Anne has been erased and King
George's added instead. That would have been done in 1714! At 2pm on Sunday
22nd there will be a concert by a quartet of players of primary school age, and the
weekend closes with a service at 6pm.
The church will be open from 10 to 4 each day. Refreshments will be on offer.
If you would like to do a flower arrangement, either as an individual or as a group,
please contact Nell Steele 840814 or Charlotte Paton 840145. We hope that some of
the arrangements will be by children or families.

East Winch Parish Council Annual Parish Meeting and Council
Meeting.
In the course of the two meetings, new councillors (Mrs J Bettany and Mrs P
Blowers) were welcomed, and Tony Hepher and Richard Cox, who had not stood for
re-election thanked for their work for the Council. The chairman (Nell Steele) and
vice chairman (Keith Harrod) were re-elected. The chairman's report was received,
as were reports on the United Charities, the Village Hall and the church.
The path which runs from Holland House to the right of way leading to Grandcourt
Farm was open and welcomed by walkers. Mr. R Wilson has sent the Parish
Council a draft contract, but the council feel it's wise to take legal advice before
agreeing to it. It was reported that the right of way itself was not being maintained
adequately. The footpath from the A47 to East Walton was in an even worse state,
and nothing had been done by NCC to improve matters. It was decided to ask Mr
Wallace of Highways to attend the next meeting and explain the lack of action.
The chairman reported that she'd heard from only one person who offered to be a
speedwatch volunteer, and it was agreed that the project would be abandoned for
the time being, especially as teams in other villages had apparently often disbanded
after disagreements.
A parishioner had suggested that the Council adopt the red telephone box. Nell
Steele had made preliminary enquiries, which the clerk is to pursue, as all
councillors liked the idea.
The playground grass is not being mowed regularly any more. Enquiries are to be
made about paying for a contractor ourselves. Paula Blowers listed the number of
play items that had not been replaced over the years. She believed it would be used
if equipment was replaced, a view that hadn't been prevalent at previous meetings.
Paula had also been asked by people whose gardens backed on to Short Drove, to
complain that unless the gate was unlocked and tankers could get in, they could not
fill their oil tanks. Mr A Wilson said that Wilson Farms did not want to be
unreasonable, and suggested that Robert Wilson was contacted in two weeks, as
he was presently away.

QEH MATTERS
The hospital held a very successful and well attended Stroke Awareness event in
May. Another event is planned for the Autumn on Diabetes.
This is the time of year when the Trust looks back at the year in preparation for the
Annual report and the members' Annual meeting in July. They have continued to
move forward in the areas of non-compliance identified by the CQC. Amongst other
things, there has been significant improvement in the prevention of C Diff infections
and a continued reduction in hospital acquired pressure ulcers. They have done a
complete re-design of the emergency department and opened a ward specifically for
the frail elderly. They are working to create a dementia friendly inpatient area in the
old West Newton ward. Paths, car park and entrance roads have been improved.
The railings along the path by the front entrance were necessary for the safety of
visitors and drivers. The speed humps were installed as a trial after various near
misses on site. Ambulances may need to drive around them on the way to A&E so
please be aware.
nd
The Council meeting on Tuesday 2 June has been cancelled due to the rd
forthcoming CQC visit so the next meeting will be the Annual Meeting on 23 July at
Lynn Sport. Members of the public are warmly welcomed. Please phone 01553

Help Save a Hedgehog
When was the last time you saw a hedgehog?
Hedgehogs now appear to be declining in the UK at the same rate as tigers are
globally at around 5% a year, both in rural and urban habitats.
We appear to have lost around 30% of the population since 2002 and it seems likely
that there are now fewer than a million hedgehogs left in the UK.
The hedgerows which give the species their name are no longer being grubbed up
but are not as "rich" or "vibrant" in the worms and other food eaten by hedgehogs
due to poor management.
At home, there is so much that gardeners can do to help the hedgehog, very simple
things like:
Checking areas before strimming or mowing.; moving piles of rubbish to a new site
before burning it; stopping or reducing the amount of pesticides and poisons used;
making sure there is an easy route out of ponds and pools. Ensuring there is access
into the garden (all that is needed is 5 square gap).
Making these connections between our own fenced-in islands of green spaces
creates a continuous habitat through which hedgehogs can forage, seek shelter and
even rendezvous with potential mates.
But we also value churchyards and burial grounds; for their importance to people
and our history and to wildlife.
The Charity Caring for Gods Acre with HRH Prince Charles as President has a
stated aim of championing conservation in churchyards and burial sites across the
British Isles.
Locally our Churches are looking at ways of creating wildlife corridors along with help
from The Norfolk Wildlife Trust - creating managed wildlife areas.
Conserving plants, aiding butterflies, and helping animals such as the hedgehog.
St Tiggywinkles Hospital was set up in 1978 to care for hedgehogs and in East
Winch the RSPCA are having an open day this month where you can see their work
for baby hedgehogs - many of whom are orphaned. You can even sponsor one.
You can also learn more and support hedgehogs by looking at the website of The
British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
Philip Larkin in his very sad poem The Mower tells us of his own hedgehog. The
final lines are : we should be careful of each other, we should be kind, while there is
still time.
It applies to the hedgehog now more than ever before. Help save a hedgehog.
