Presidents Column – March / April 2017 Greetings HAS Members, We have had a great start to our 2017 spring season. Two very interesting demos and workshops that have been very popular, entertaining and informative. And we have 3 more very talented guest artists on the agenda to finish off the season including William Kalwick Jr., Peter Andrews and Lynda Jung. While the end of the 2016 – 2017 HAS season is beginning to come into focus, we have many events still on the docket. Our Spring LSAG compliant open show will be held on Saturday, April 22. Pre-registration for the show ends Monday, April 17 so, you still have plenty of time to start pre-registering for it or completing those masterpieces that you want to compete with. Our annual Spring Lunch- eon will be in early May before our final general meeting on May 16 and the summer LSAG convention will be held in Sugar Land on June 3 and 4. At the February general meeting, we began the process of looking for volunteers to fill positions for the 2017 – 2018 new Board of Directors. All positions are open. Your current Board has many old faces on it and while they are very experienced we need new faces to provide fresh ideas. I have been your president for 4 years and many of the Board members have been in their positions for much longer. We really need new volunteers. The various positions and the roles they entail can be found in your current Yearbook & Directory beginning on page 35. The old Board will not desert you and will remain in various consultive and active capacities but please con- sider volunteering your talents to the new Board. Elec- tions for the new Board will be held at the April General meeting and the Board will begin their duties after the LSAG convention. Please contact April Hadley ([email protected]) with your choice or choices of positions. We are trying out some new things at HAS. At the Febru- ary general meeting, we held it in room 302 where we were able to televise the demo for better viewing. We havent perfected the system yet but it holds promise for those demos that are done flat on the tables. We will continue working on it. We also gave trial runs to being able to take credit cards in addition to checks or cash for workshop payments. We plan to expand this to our shows and membership dues. There will be a small $1 surcharge for using a credit card but you can always pay with a check or cash and not incur the surcharge. If you have some good ideas on how to make HAS better or would like to see HAS do things differently, please contact any current Board member with your ideas. If you know of others who might be interested in joining Hou- ston Art Society encourage them to attend a meeting and see for themselves how we might benefit them. We are always looking to increase membership. Finally, please note the following: Yearbook / Directory Date Correction A mistake has been found in the Calendar of events lo- cated on page 16. All the April dates are wrong so please note the following corrections: The general meeting will be held on April 17 and the workshop will be held on April 24. THE LSAG ARTIST’S DATABASE – MANAGING YOUR ARTIST PROFILE – by Michael Adams The Lone Star Art Guild has a very nice website which I encourage everyone to take a look at. They have been making significant improvements to the website over this last summer and one improvement is the “Artist’s Database”. This has existed in the past and if you attended the summer LSAG convention you made use of this database when you registered for the convention and show. LSAG and several of the member clubs are using the database to facilitate pre-registrations for their judged shows. In fact several of the bigger clubs in the future will require you to pre-register for their show using the LSAG database and will not accept walk-ins or other forms of registration. Walk-ins at shows have always been a part of the Houston Art Society and we do not anticipate any change to that policy in the future. However, if we can make better use of the database for our pre-registrations this will greatly cut down on the work taking in the art the day of the show and entering winners into the LSAG database after a show. So it is important for you not only to understand how the system works to help make Houston Art Society shows run smoother but also, if you wish to enter other club’s shows you may be required to use the database. Please note: if you had paintings in any of our shows last year or attended the LSAG July convention then your artist’s profile has already been input into the LSAG database and if you had paintings in our HAS fall show on October 5 your works are also in the da-tabase whether you won a ribbon or not. So following are some simple instructions:

Log on to the Lone Star Art Guild website: www.lonestarartguild.org On the left hand column in blue click on the button “Show Database for Show Entry” If you have previously registered with LSAG then type in your email address and your password If you forgot your password click on the “Forgot Password” link and follow the instructions If you have never registered with LSAG or did not enter any artwork into the HAS fall show, then contact

me with the following information and I will get you registered and with a temporary password which you can change later. I will need your name, address, phone number, email, and the division (i.e. pro-fessional. semi-professional etc.) you participate in.

You are now logged in. Go to profile and confirm your details. This is where you can also change your password. Once you are satisfied click on the “Save Profile” button.

If you click on the “View Artwork” link after your name you will see all artwork that was entered into the HAS Oct. show. If you did not enter any artwork then there will be nothing to see.

When you have new artwork that you think you may want to enter into the HAS spring 2014 show or that you might want to enter into some other club’s show, then click the “Add New Artwork” button.

You will need to input the title, the category (category A or B or C etc.), the medium (oil, acrylic, WC, pas-tel etc.), the price if you wish to sell it or “NFS” if not, the dimensions (in whole inches and for all hang-ing art put 1 inch in the depth space, for 3-D art then whatever the proper 3 dimensions are)

Once you are satisfied with your input push the “Save Artwork” button Repeat process for each additional new piece of art Logout when finished

The future goal of the database is once you have art entered all you will need to do to pre-register for a show is to select a show from the “Show’s” button and click on what pieces of art you want to enter. Art will remain in your profile for up to 2 years or be deleted if you win a ribbon at the LSAG convention. When you arrive at the show on take-in day then all you will need is your artwork and a check. The HAS show registrar will have been able to print out all the labels for the paintings you enter thus at check-in you only need present your check and tape the pre-printed labels to your paintings. This process is being finalized now and when in better working order I will write another article on how to use it and how HAS will use it. For those of you with no emails, or for those of you who still prefer the old fashioned paper pre-registration method HAS will continue to honor that. Also, if you decide you want to enter our spring show the day of the show we will still accommodate all walk-ins. But I encourage everyone who does have access to the internet to please use the LSAG database whenever you finish a piece of art that you think you may but are never re-quired, to enter into a future show. It should make all our lives easier in the future.
