It is a privilege to begin a new chapter in my ser- vice to the students, staff, and families of the Hanover Community School Corporation. Fol- lowing my first three years as Assistant Super- intendent, I am looking forward to my fourth year in the district as Super- intendent. Together we can provide our students an exceptional educa- tional experience that reflects a love of learning and builds supportive relationships that ensure their success. This year will bring new opportunities, and with those opportunities will come great challenges. We must be attentive to our increasing enroll- ment and what that will mean for the programs and services we offer our students. Deborah Snedden is well known to Hanover students and parents, having served as Principal at both Jane Ball Elementary and Hanover Central Middle School. Less well known, is Mrs. Snedden‟s extensive background in developing stan-dards and curriculum, and her background will be a true asset to her new posi-tion as Curriculum Director for the Hanover Community School Corporation. In 2014, she served as a member of an Indiana Department of Education commit-tee that developed Math Standards for grades 3-5 across the State. In addition, Mrs. Snedden spent two years developing the complete curriculum for the Hammond Academy for Science and Technology which opened its doors in 2010. Mrs. Snedden is a resident of Crown Point and has been married to an alum of Hanover schools, Mark Snedden, since 2004. They are the proud parents of a blended family of seven children. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elemen-tary Education from Purdue Calumet, her Master‟s in Educational Administra-tion from Ball State and is currently working toward her Ed. S. at Indiana University to complete the requirements for Superintendent licensure, before returning to her work on her Ph.D. “My years with Hanover as Principal at Jane

Ball and HCMS have given me a greater insight into the Hanover family. I intend to blend that insight with my curriculum design experience and build upon the excellent curriculum efforts of my predecessor. I can‟t wait to begin this new chapter in my service to your kids!”

Michael O‟Donnell is our new Director of School Safety and Security. A NWI native, Mr. O‟Donnell is a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Acad-emy in Bloomington, IN, and holds a B.S. in Criminal Justice from the Indi-ana University Northwest School of Public and Environmental Affairs. “I always wanted to be a policeman and made my educational choices to ac-commodate an appropriate path to achieve that goal,” said Mr. O‟Donnell. In addition to a full career as a Police Officer and School Resource Officer with the Highland Police Department, Mr. O‟Donnell joins Hanover having also served as a Criminal Justice teacher at Lowell High School. “As a teacher at Lowell last year, I realized that I missed safety and secu-rity. I believe providing safety and security in a school setting is an abso-lutely essential part of the education environment today. This position will enable me to utilize my experience and training to help ensure the safety of Hanover students and staff,” explained Mr. O‟Donnell. Mr. O‟Donnell and his wife Traci are the proud parents of four grown chil-dren and proud grandparents of one grandson and have another grandchild on the way.

Thomas Martin was born and raised in Northwest Indiana and we are proud to have him join the Hanover family as Principal of Hanover Central Middle School. He began his college career at Indiana University in Bloomington studying finance, but soon decided that his first instinct to become a teacher was one he should follow and switched his focus to education. He also hold a Master‟s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Scranton in Scranton, PA. For 19 years, Mr. Martin served in the classroom before moving into administration. “It is the challenge of being a Principal that I enjoy,” said Mr. Martin. He describes those challenges clearly, “I learned in a hurry that you can plan out your week or your day and it is never going to go as planned. It makes every day difficult, but it also makes every day unique, interesting and challenging.” Mr. Martin previously served as Princi-pal at William Fegely Middle School in Portage, before signing on with Hano-ver. Mr. Martin and his wife, Allison have two sons and two daughters. As a fam-ily, they are very involved in the soccer life of their two youngest children.

This is the perfect opportunity to introduce the newest members of our Administrative staff. You can find more information about these individuals on our website at www.hanover.k12.in.us and individual school pages. Please look for our new Athletic Directors on page 7 in this newsletter.

Our students are eager to learn the technology they will need in the fu-ture, and they are eager to learn right now. In 2018-2019, Hanover schools will add several technology tools and upgrades to bring the future into our classrooms and teach our students to be brave enough to shape that future.

All Hanover Central Middle School students will have access to a device during the school day. Fifth and sixth grade students will be exposed to our online learning management system, „Schoology,‟ and our 7th and 8th grade students will utilize the system on a daily basis. You can learn more about the Middle School 1:1 program at the Middle School Back to School Night on September 6th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Hanover Central High School stu-dents will immediately notice the renovations that transformed the for-mer high school library into a true Technology Center. The design of the area was deliberate and consciously created, with collaboration between our Technology Department and out-side vendors, to promote communi-cation, creativity and collaboration. The area will also house a centrally located Chromebook Repair Bay.

As school starts, we will be providing yet another exciting technology tool to be used by all of our students. The launch of our Google Expedition VR

Kit will allow Hanover students to join nearly one million students around the world in experiencing field trips to just about anywhere you can imagine. All aboard for an exciting journey to the Moon or Machu Picchu!

Our students aren‟t alone in benefitting from new technology tools in Hanover schools. We heard our parents loud and clear and they will now be able to partner with us and their students by having access to „Schoology‟ at both the Middle School and High School. Ac-count activation emails will be sent to parents beginning on August 6th and continue through August 10th. If you do not receive an account activation email during this time, please email our Director of Technology Services:

[email protected]

With these big steps forward in meeting the needs of our 21st Century Learners, comes the need to increase our technol-ogy team. This year will see the addi-tion of Computer Coordinators at both Jane Ball Elementary and Lincoln Ele-mentary Schools. These new staff members will work with students and staff to ensure Hanover‟s students meet or exceed the new K-4 computer science standards set by the State of Indiana.

It‟s an exciting time to be a student in Hanover schools and we can‟t wait to share these new tech tools!

Students have the opportunity to be provided an online, prepaid account found at www.mymealtime.com. To sign up for an account, use your student‟s ID number. Online deposits take 5 minutes to process and may be made with a credit/debit card. Deposits can be made at each school using cash (no change given) or a check made out to your school‟s cafe. Elementary students will need to send deposits at the beginning of the school day in an envelope marked with their full name, as well as their teacher‟s name. Middle and high school students can make deposits at breakfast or lunch. Mealtime can also send you re-minder emails when funds are low. Hanover uses the Touch & Go Biometrics System for point of sale customer identification. This system eliminates the need to remember PIN numbers or carry ID cards. An individual„s unique print is generated into a mathematical template that creates only identifying points, not the whole print. This unique template system cannot be accessed for replication by other security systems.

Hanover schools will continue to use online enrollment for the upcoming year. This process replaces the use of paper forms. If you don‟t have access to a computer, help is available. Hanover Central Middle School will host an open use night of school computers for anyone wishing to register on August 3rd, from 1:00 to 3:oo p.m. and from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m..

New to Online Enrollment? How do I get started? Type this link into your browser: http://www.hanover.k12.in.us/newstudent

Should I create an account? If you have never completed online enrollment using InfoSnap, our online enrollment tool, you should create an account. Doing so allows you to securely save your work and return to the enrollment form at a later time. Using your email address or cell phone number as your user ID is an easy way to ensure you have ready access to your account.

Steps to success with Infosnap If you already have an account, you can sign in and complete the form. You should use the same account to complete forms for multiple students.

Do I have to answer all of the questions? Questions marked with a red

asterisk (*) are required.

What if I make a mistake? If you would like to make a change, click on the

underlined field or click ―Prev‖ to return to a previous page.

I’ve completed the form, now what? After you have finished entering your

information, click ―Submit.‖ This will send all of the information you have entered to your child‟s school. If the „Submit‟ feature does not respond, please re-visit fields highlighted with text indicating “Required.”

What if I have more than one student in the district? You will need to complete a separate enrollment for each child because the information you provide is specific to each child. We recommend that you submit one enrollment and then start another. This will allow you to copy shared family information, saving time and ensuring accurate information is transmitted.

Returning students: Returning students can be registered by logging into the Power School Parent account (https://hcps.hanover.k12.in.us/public/home.html) and using the Infosnap Returning Student Enrollment link found in the Naviga-tion menu. Some returning student data will already appear on the form. Please review this data for accuracy and make any necessary changes.

The Hanover Community School Corporation has continued its commitment to provide transportation to ALL Hanover students. Ever mindful of the cost of providing safe service to our students, the decision was made to consolidate bus stops in areas where it is practical to do so. We are initiating our “Consolidated Bus Stop” program beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

Details of this transition include:

1. NO rural and/or major thoroughfare stops will be consolidated. Service will continue on an individual student basis to ensure the safety of our students. Routes have been adjusted to allow this procedure to remain intact.

2. The “Find Your Bus” link on all 5 of our websites is now active to allow parents/students ample time to prepare for the start of school. Students new to the dis-trict will not appear in the system until the registration process is completed.

3. NO student will be required to walk more than 1600 feet to a Consolidated Bus

Stop.

4. NO Elementary School students will be riding with High School/Middle School students.

5. We strongly encourage the parents/guardians of our Kindergarten stu-dents, as well as all students, to have a plan in place that ensures their safe delivery to, and pick up from, the new Consolidated Bus Stops., Our strong preference is that parents/guardians/siblings escort Kindergarten students to and from the Consolidated Bus Stops. Our bus drivers are an integral and professional part of the Hanover Community School Corporation and will work hard with our parent part-ners to make sure all students are transported safely. Particular atten-tion will be made toward making sure our Kindergarten students feel safe and secure.

6. Middle School/High School students will share bus services. We are aware of some parent concerns regarding

incoming 5th graders at the Middle School riding with High School students, and encourage our parents to talk to their students often during the first few weeks of school to determine if any indi-vidual student does not feel secure. Our drivers, as always, will be attentive to the behavior of our students on the bus. Please review the bus riding rules posted on the “Transportation Department” page of our website in the Parent/Community Directory.

7. You can find your student‟s Consolidate Bus Stop by visiting any of the Hanover websites and using the “Find Your Bus” link under “Announcements.”

Hanover Central Athletics Meet the New

ATHLETICS TEAM

Kelly Bermes is a native of Portage, Indiana, and a graduate of Valparaiso University. She holds a Master‟s Degree in Science/Reading from Walden University in Boston as well. Ms. Bermes is an NIAAA certified and registered Athletic Administrator and served as the Athletic Director for Porter Township School before joining the Hanover family. Ms. Bermes is an accomplished athlete in her own right, having played volleyball and competed in NCAA Div. II gymnastics for VU. The position of Athletic Director will not be a new experience for Ms. Bermes. She is well aware of the challenges, but equally aware of the rewards of the position. What could perhaps be described as the most difficult portion of an athletic administrative position is the very essence of what makes Kelly Bermes happy. “The hours are long, but it is so rewarding on the other end that it is worth it. The hours from 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. are late ones, but after a full day in the office, they are the ones I enjoy the most,” she explained. “I love being with the kids. Watching coaches do what they do to prepare kids to step up and meet the competition levels they are capable of, is what I truly enjoy.” Outside of the long hours of athletics, Ms. Bermes enjoys working out, walking, running and every-thing outdoors. She also enjoys spending time with her three adult children. “I‟m so lucky to have them all in the area,” she said with a pleased smile that every mom can understand and appreciate. To parents, coaches, and athletes, her message is a simple and welcome one. “I will work tirelessly to provide the best athletic atmosphere for every child. I will encourage coaches to coach, athletes to play their best and parents to be the best possible and positive supporters of Hanover athletes.”

Kelly Bermes Athletic Director

New Dean of Students and Athletic Director at Hanover Central Middle School, Christopher Rossiano is a long time resident of the region and a graduate of the Lake Central School system where he returned to begin his career as a teacher, coach and eventually as an Athletic Director at Clark Middle School. Mr. Rossiano is a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington with a Bachelor of Science De-gree in Secondary Social Studies Education. Athletics is a passion for Mr. Rossiano who grew up playing a sport every season including; football, basketball, wrestling and baseball. His passion for an outdoor lifestyle, and as a sports enthusiast, is shared by his wife Jennifer, though he admits that the future of their two young children in terms of athletics is still something of a mystery. Taking on a new position, and a duel position that is new within the Corporation, is exciting to Mr. Rossiano. “I look forward to it. I like new experiences, I like new challenges and I‟m pretty good at going with the flow,” he explained. “As a teacher and a coach you deal with everything that is positive about education, however, I understand that as a Dean, I‟ll be called on to deal with some very difficult situations at times, but I believe I have had some good role models in education and will draw on the experience of other professionals.” Mr. Rossiano has a message for parents, “My goal is to do what‟s best for kids. My decisions might not always make everyone happy, but please know that I‟m on your side and more impor-tantly, I‟m on your kid‟s side.”

Chris Rossiano Athletic Director/Dean of Students

Hanover Central Middle School

We‟re pleased to announce that there will be no increase in transportation fees for the 2018-2019 school year. Middle School participation is $20 per season and High School participation is $30 per season. A student athlete may partici-pate in more than one sport in a season for a single fee. Trans-portation payments can be made to the middle school and high school bookkeepers or paid online through the student fees program. Transportation fees will be posted after the official practice season begins and team rosters have been finalized.

You will find a 2018-2019 printable „Physical Packet,‟ in the Parents/Community Direc-tory on the school website. Every student in grades 6-12 who plans to participate on a Hanover athletic team must have a completed physical packet on file before he/she can begin practice. Each piece of the Physical Packet must be completed with all appropriate signatures and turned in to the athletic office. Packets are also available for pickup in Hanover school offices.
