Expression of XIHbox 1 antigen during development of the zebrafish pectoral fin. Initially a circular fieldof mesodermal cells express the homeodomain protein. After a fin bud is formed, the expression becomeslocalized to nuclei in the anterior and proximal mesoderm. For further details, see review article by E. DeRobertis, E. A. Morita and K. W. Y. The Company of Biologists Limited, founded in 1925, is a 'Company Limited by Guarantee'having tax-exempt charitable status. There is a Board of Directors consisting of about 20professional biologists, two of them appointed annually by the Society for Experimental Biology, who receive no salary or fees for their services. The Company's main function is to own andproduce The Journal of Experimental Biology, the Journal of Cell Science and Development, andto appoint the Editors of these journals. These are part-time appointments held by establishedprofessional biologists of some eminence, and once they have been appointed the Companyexercises no control over editorial policy.
The Company is precluded by its charitable status from making a commercial profit on itsoperations, and its aim is to produce high-quality journals at the lowest possible price. Anysurplus on publishing not required for the journals' reserves is transferred to an Educational TrustFund, which makes substantial grants in aid of societies concerned with the fields of interestcovered by the Company's journals. Grants are also made to conferences and summer schools inthe fields of its journals.
Erratum
Kubiak, J., Paldi, A., Weber, M. and Maro, B.Genetically identical parthenogenetic mouse embryos produced by inhibition of the first meioticcleavage with cytochalasin D. Development 111, 763-770.
50 % of the diploid embryos derived from oocytes that underwent recombination and treatedwith cytochalasin D during the first meiotic division (CCD+-), have a different composition ofthe genome in regards to their mother: they are homozygous in the recombined regions.
This contrasts with the control group (CCD—+), i.e. treated with cytochalasin D during thesecond meiotic division, where all embryos derived from oocytes which underwent recombinationare heterozygous in regards to alleles of the recombined region, while all other genes arehomozygous.
In conclusion: not all, but the great majority of the embryos obtained from a single female bythe method described in our paper (the CCD + — variant) is genetically identical or very similar totheir mother.

with Development
Development is working in full cooperation with EMBL Heidelberg to ensure that genesequences submitted to Development are made available in the database immediately the
journal is published.
The authors of all papers accepted for Development that contain gene sequences will thereforebe sent the EMBL sequence data submission form that specifies how sequences can be
submitted to the database and shows how to obtain an accession number.
Sequences that have to be rekeyed by some databases can take up to 6 months before they aremade available to the scientific community.
See Development 108 727-734 for information on submitting sequences.

Development ofXenopus LaevisAn Atlas of the Histology. ' \
Verlag der Zeitschriftfur Naturforschung
1991. Approx. 160 pp. 42 figs. Hardcover DM 198,- ISBN 3-540-53740-6
Xenopus laevis is the key model for developmental, differential and embryological studies in vertebrates.Using molecular biological techniques it has become possible within the last few years to analyze developmentalprocesses up to the level of genes. On obtaining results it is necessary to correlate them with morphological andhistological stages. This excellent work documents and describes such developmental stages in finite detail.
After an informative introduction to The Early Development of Xenopuslaevis follows the highlight of the book, namely the 42 plates, each consistingof at least four high resolution micrographs. The reader is thus provided witha histological presentation of immaculate quality. Each plate is comple-mented by a schematic diagram describing the details shown on the plate, anadditional scheme indicating the section and an explanatory short text, making this a potentially highly sought after work.

TRAVELLINGFELLOWSHIPS
The journal is pleased to announce a new travelling fellowship program that is in keepingwith The Company of Biologists' commitment to support research scientists.
In 1991 DEVELOPMENT is offering
FIVE TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIPS
I of up to $1500 each
Graduate and postdoctoral students are invited to apply to the Editors in 1991 for funds toassist travel and expenses involved in visits to other laboratories.
Applications, which should be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, an account of thework to be done and a full breakdown of the costs involved, should include a letter ofrecommendation from the head of the laboratory in which the applicant is presentlyworking and from the head of the laboratory in which the work will be done.
Applications should be sent to C. C. WylieThe Company of Biologists Limited
Department of Zoology, Downing Street, Cambridge CB2 3EJ, UK
The Editors in awarding the Fellowships will be guided by the excellence of thecandidates, and the importance and innovative quality of the work to be done.
