Welcome to the spring edition of Villa Vistas, and a welcome spring it is! As the cold persisted outdoors, the warmth and community of our Catholic school grew in wondrous ways. From the production of The Wizard of Oz (next page) to the creation of the Our Lady of the Rosary quilted wall hanging (page 13), Villa students shine! As you read this edition of Villa Vistas, you will see that Villa students continue to excel in all areas: academics, athletics, the arts, and in service to others. Thank you to our teachers, administrators and parents, for it is a joint effort of many hands and minds to achieve such amazing results. Yet, it is not these results of which we are most proud; it is the character of our students, the way their faith and the Benedictine values animate them as they represent themselves, and our school, with distinction.

Many thanks to those who supported VillaRama 2014. Those who attended particularly liked having the event on campus, as the gym was totally transformed. Many thanks to Donna Damon, our many donors and everyone who helped make it a success. The Development Office is seeking volunteers interested in helping make next year’s event even better.

A special thank you to those who contributed to this year’s Villa Madonna Academy Annual Fund Drive. Please consider a donation if you have not done so. A gift to the Annual Fund builds Villa’s margin of excellence in many areas.

The Villa community lost a member of our family in April with the passing of elementary secretary Mrs. Judy Kraus. (see page 10 for her obituary.) We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Kraus family. Over the last eleven years, Judy spent countless hours ensuring all students, parents and teachers were well taken care of at school. She will be greatly missed at VMA.

Mrs. Maureen Regan joined Villa in May as Director of Development. She has previously worked at Covington Catholic, Elder High School, and Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, in the areas of recruitment, communications and development. She and her husband live in Ft. Wright, and her daughter attends Miami of Ohio. She is anxious to get to know everyone in the Villa community!

On behalf of the Board, I extend sincere appreciation to Mrs. Soshana Bosley and Mrs. Pamela McQueen for their significant contributions to Villa this year. Despite already heavy workloads, they assisted with leadership of development office functions while we undertook the search for a new Development Director. A special thank you to Sr. Deborah Harmeling, OSB, Villa Madonna Academy Board member, who volunteered to serve as editor for both issues of this year’s Villa Vistas.

The season of graduation is upon us. Villa graduates, illumined by the light of faith, are prepared to be 21st century leaders. These citizens of tomorrow are formed inside the wonderful place that is Villa, in small classes with teachers who work to help each student achieve at his or her highest level. Time and again we learn that what really matters in this world are the interactions we have with each other, the little ways that God brings us together in community. Those imprints touch us once and often many times over. Thanks for all you do to make the Villa community one that cares, that fosters love and wisdom in the context of faith in the lives of many.

God bless!

Plays to Sold-Out CrowdsThe Wizard of Oz

Rave reviews and standing-room-only performances marked the high school production of The Wizard of Oz! The performances took place the weekend of March 21-23, and an opening night GALA was filled with sponsors, donors and families who supported the Fine Arts Patrons event. Attendees enjoyed a Lenten menu, and high school and junior high students helped serve food and greet guests. The guests then followed the yellow brick road to the theatre and enjoyed a spectacular performance.

Gabrielle Notorgiacomo and her ruby slippers took us to the land of Oz, and there Marcus Schwarting (Scarecrow), Nicholas Boucher (Tin Man) and Lincoln Lutz (Lion) kept the audience mesmerized as they searched for the elusive wizard. More than fifty high school students were part of the cast, and a skilled and efficient crew kept the landscape changing and the audience in awe.

Many parents, faculty and staff helped with costumes, scenery, sets, publicity, programs, tickets , and all aspects of the play – it was truly a Villa family event. Mrs. Polly Stringer shot all of the photographs of the cast and crew and created a beautiful movie-size poster. Mrs. Amanda Rood served as conductor of the orchestra – the first time a Villa production was led by a live orchestra!

A special thank you goes to Ms. Caitlin Ingram, English/drama teacher, whose creativity as the director transformed our theatre into Kansas and Oz and who made us fall in love all over again with characters of courage, heart and a brain!

VMA Students Receive Delegation of Excellence AwardVMA students who are passionate about world politics can engage in a three-day state wide mock United Nations assembly. They choose what country they want to represent and learn everything they can about that country. This year several of the fifth and sixth grade students with the help of Mr. Ben Tilley prepared themselves for a mock United Nations meeting held in Louisville, Kentucky, March 23-25. Over 900 students attended the statewide convention, each delegation representing a different country in order to propose answers to certain problems the world faces.

VMA students,Aidan Kovacic, Sophie Keseberg, Lily Alquizola, and Jack Hein presented a proposal that was endorsed by the Secretary General and will be submitted for review by the actual United Nations. The group received the Delegration of Excellence Award to recognize their accomplishments. In addition, Aidan Kovacic received the Outstanding Ambassador Award.

Give Villa Madonna Students 21st Century Advantages

This year the sixth grade students had 1:1 iPads. They have radically changed the way that students learn; they give students constant access to almost any piece of information they seek. A powerful learning tool, the iPads have allowed the sixth graders to enjoy the following benefits:

Online classroom – Students use a learning platform called Edmodo. What began as a way for them to turn in work created on their iPads has become a powerful way for them to collaborate and communicate with one another and their teachers. The iPads allow students to learn about digital citizenship in an environment that is safe. Students can use Edmodo to ask questions, participate in discussions, take quizzes, and get immediate feedback.

Increased opportunities for authentic re-search – Until recently, when students had questions or wanted to learn more about a topic, they had to wait to do research. Now, the power of Google is at their fingertips on a regular basis. This has led to excellent lessons on inquiry, effective use of search engines, and evaluating online sources.

Google Apps for Education – Students in the sixth grade use Google Apps for Education. This allows them to see their work

anywhere. Students can begin a document at school and pick up where they left off later that evening without any thumb drive or external device. Students are also able to collaborate on documents and presentations in real time, making the coordination of group

projects easier. Students have begun to keep their science binders online in their Google Drive account. This means that no important papers are lost, and studying can happen anywhere!

Creative projects – The iPads allow students to show what they know in many ways. Rather than finding one right answer, students are asked to think about how they can show their understanding of lessons. This can be in the form of movies, interactive posters, and collaborative writing projects. By asking the students to decide how to demonstrate their learning, they are establishing critical thinking skills and practicing

creativity that will be a large part of careers in the future.

Using the latest technology the sixth graders have created many wonderful projects throughout the year. You can access one of their projects, a book review, by scanning the QR code with your smart device.

Several new courses will enhance the high school and junior high curriculum next year. Science students will have the option to enroll in Anatomy and Physiology, a full-year course offered to juniors and seniors. The course will include a fundamental understanding of structure and function of the body and the connection between

iPads

the two; homeostasis: the body’s natural tendency to maintain a stable internal environment; and the major levels of organization in the human organism from chemical and cellular levels to the tissues, organs, and organ systems. This course will benefit the increasing number of students pursing science-related careers.

In the Fine Arts there will be a drama class for sophomores. It will cover the basics of theatre, beginning with the history of theatre and continuing with the study of acting techniques and production aspects. The class will be performance and project based with a planned showcase at the end of the year

A new junior high theatre class will focus on the topics of theatre history, acting skills, and theatre appreciation. Students will participate in classroom activities focusing on improvisation and characterization. Students will also study the evolution and development of theatre from the Greeks to modern day. Class lessons will focus on real life application and how theatrical skills can help build confidence and tools for academic success. This class will be part of the junior high MAGNET classes (music, art, guidance, phys ed, technology, theatre.) The junior high program is a progressive program offering advanced opportunities in world languages, math and the fine arts.

Social Studies Teacher Moves to

Paperless ClassroomFaculty member Bob Henson, a 2002 graduate of Villa Madonna Academy, has embraced VMA’s 1:1 iPad program and the opportunities for 21st century learning and teaching. The utilization of student iPads has enabled Mr. Henson and his high school history students to learn, create and collaborate in a paperless environment. Students submit homework, assignments, and quizzes electronically, primarily through Edmodo and Google Docs. All lecture and discussion notes are available online and are automatically updated. Students create and share documents with other students and faculty. One of the many advantages is that cloud storage allows students to have immediate document access. In addition, each class is a separate Edmodo group, and Edmodo allows Mr. Henson to design, send, receive, and grade assignments without any paper changing hands. Papers are submitted to Turnitin.com with the option of electronic grading, and the site also checks all papers for any instances of plagia-rism. Mr. Henson says the most important advantage of the paperless classroom is that it promotes efficiency in his work as a teacher.

Mr. Henson has just completed a Leadership Project in which he created an iPad training program for teachers. Next year, Mr. Henson and another teacher will offer monthly professional development in this area. VMA salutes Mr. Henson for his leadership.

NKU and VMA High School Partner in STEM ProjectVilla Madonna Academy is excited to announce the Northern Kentucky Univeristy/VMA Science Academic Partnership Project. This is the first partnership project of this kind for VMA and is a great opportunity for high school juniors and seniors interested in science and math.

The project is a three-phase engagement:

Villa’s National Honor Society Is

Active in Service

6 • Vi l l a Vi s t a s Volume 1 , I ssue 2

The members of VMA National Honor Society have been leading the school in spiritual and service activities. The officers prepared and led the junior high and high school students in an Advent prayer service. They further encouraged the spirit of compassion and generosity through Thriftshop Thursday - a collection competition among the students in grades 7-12 that resulted in 1,380 items being donated to St. Vincent de Paul. In addition, NHS members made personalized meals to send home to math teacher Mrs. Rider in order to make the early stages of motherhood a little less stressful. The students also prepared and enjoyed a spaghetti dinner with the Benedictine sisters. VMA National Honor Society students remain committed to leading lives of character, leadership and service.

During the week of February 24, the fourth, fifth and sixth grade classes held a color war! Students were asked to bring in a dollar or personal care items such as shampoo, soap, or toothbrushes to donate to the Welcome House of Northern Kentucky. As students brought in items, they received a piece of duct tape that they were able to stick on another student’s’ t-shirt. The grade with the least amount of duct tape, the sixth grade, was declared the winner. The students, however, decided that they were all winners because they collected an unbelievable amount for those in need at the Welcome House.

Matthew 25 MinistriesAs part of their year-long service learning project, the fourth grade students toured Mathew 25 Ministries in March. Students learned about the hunger epidemic in our country while touring the facility. As a culminating activity, the students helped package over 400 boxes of personal care items. The students returned to school with a new sense of how they can make a difference in the lives of others by donating their time and talent for others.

Wind Chimes for Children’s Advocacy GroupWith the help of their art teacher, Mrs. Janet Pemberton, students created wind chimes for the Northern Kentucky Children’s Advocacy Center. The students created beautiful pinwheel chimes out of clay and copper.

Grandparents Come to Villa’s House

The Villa Family Mourns the Death of a MemberJudith “Judy” Kraus died on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Hospice of St. Elizabeth, Edgewood.

Judy loved her most recent position as school secretary where she spent countless hours

organizing and preparing for each new school day at Villa Madonna Academy. Judy served

our Villa community for eleven years as our elementary secretary and was also a 1956 VMA

graduate. One could honestly say that Judy was the “glue” that held everything together in

the office. Judy showed a sincere kindness to each student and visitor and was truly the first

face of Villa. Mrs. Kraus will be deeply missed. Before working at VMA, Mrs. Kraus had a

successful career in banking at First National of Covington, Provident Bank and Total

Systems in Columbus, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Patricia Behle

Haupt. Survivors include her husband, Michael Kraus of Villa Hills; son, David (Vanessa)

Schell of Ft. Thomas; sisters, Elizabeth Grause of Park Hills and Debby (Larry) Anderson

of Columbus, OH; brothers, Paul (Denise) Haupt of Edgewood and Joe (Peggy) Haupt of

Ludlow; six grandchildren, Parker Schell, Bailey Schell, Carson Schell, Mackenzie Schell, Peyton Fossett and Jace Willoughby; also

surviving are several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A service for Judy was held at Mother of God Church on

May 1. In Lieu of flowers, the family Memorial contributions are suggested to: Villa Madonna Academy, 2500 Amsterdam Road,

Villa Hills, KY 41017.

The memory of the heart-warming song “Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother’s House We Go” warmed the hearts of VMA grandparents and special guests during the annual Grandparents’ Day on April 11. Students in grades K-3 honored their grandparents by singing, dancing and completing activities with their guests. Students, under the guidance of music teacher, Paula Ransom, presented a special program for their grandparents. The song will always be a reminder to the students of the special time they shared at school with their grandparents!

Class of 2013 graduate Kirsten Giesbrecht was chosen by Dr. Marie Nydam, a professor at Centre College, to do research work in northern Spain this summer. Dr. Nydam received a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). Kirsten, a freshman, was selected as an outstanding student in biology. Kirsten attributes this honor to her preparation at VMA. “My math and science classes fully prepared me for the courses I’ve taken at Centre College. I probably wouldn’t have been invited to do the summer research without such a strong foundation from Villa’s AP biology class.“

Mr. Mark Bailey, VMA 2007 graduate and Western Kentucky University 2011 graduate in Architectural Science, is now entering his last of two years at Miami University working in the Master of Architecture program. He is currently working on his thesis, “Hybrid Amusement Parks: Reconnecting Culture, Site, and Leisure back with the Urban

Fabric.” After graduation, Mr. Bailey plans to work for an architecture firm in Dayton, Ohio, while pursuing LEED accreditation and his professional architectural license.

Elementary School Students Create a Quilted Work of ArtDuring the months of February and March, artist and parent Mrs. Amanda Kolar, began an artist-in-residence with the elementary students. Her vision of a quilted wall hanging honoring the “Our Lady of the Rosary” was introduced to the students.

The work began with the students using many colors to dye and print on fabric. The students were so absorbed in this process that many found it difficult to leave the beautiful fabrics at school, let alone cut them into pieces!

It was a total team effort, with all grades playing an important part in bringing Mrs. Kolar’s vision to completion. Kindergarten students strung buttons and embroidered stars. The first grade students made yo-yo’s for the rosary beads. The second grade students pieced together light blue strips for Mary’s dress. Third grade students created various squares of purple and blue. Fourth grades students used oranges and yellows to make star-like squares. Working collaboratively in small groups, the fifth and sixth grade students created squares illustrating the mysteries of the rosary. Parent helper Mrs. Annette Hassoun threaded needles and top stitched.

As the pieces began to come together, the excitement of sewing and creating one large work of art from so many small pieces was exhilarating for all. Once Mrs. Kolar stitched the final pieces together and displayed the wall hanging, the students watched in awe, proudly and excitedly identifying their own part in creating this beautiful tribute.

Bishop Roger Foys visited Villa to bless the quilt on May 2. The quilt is displayed in the foyer outside the theater for all to enjoy and to honor Mary for years to come.

VillaRama 2014 Sparkles on the Villa Campus VillaRama 2014 was a huge success, and the gym was transformed into a beautiful party venue as the event moved home to the Villa campus. Each year, local businesses and the Villa family donate silent auction and live auction items. Faculty, students and parents work diligently on the class projects, and the donations of fun events provided by the teachers and principals were, once again, in demand.

“Flowers and Dessert Each Month for a Year”, a live auction item generously donated by Kreutzer & Dorl Florist and Sr. Nancy Kordenbrock, is always a success. Villa families offer their vacation homes, and for many years we have been fortunate to auction the First Pitch at the Reds game for the winning bidder and 40 friends. These are just a few of the many live auction items that took center stage in competitive and fun bidding.!

VMA’s silent auction is one of the largest in the area. With over 400 packages, there is something for everyone. The most popular items are always the class projects and teacher experience donations. This year was no exception. Highlights this year included the First Grade quilts and Fifth Grade constellation quilts, Third Grade personalized tiled Gardening Benches, a Frozen sing-a-long with Miss Ingram, high schoolEnglish/dramateacher,andLunchandPutt-PuttwithMs.O’ConnellandMrs.Rood.Alsoonthe silent auction table was the opportunity to bid for a coveted playing spot on the first VillaRama Faculty vs. Student 7-12 Basketball Game. The bidding frenzy did not disappoint as last-minute bids were placed in anticipation of the win.

We were also very fortunate to have a piece of hand-painted oil artwork from former parent J. Fischer and a beautiful handcrafted table from former parent and board member, Tom Lux. There were many interesting, beautiful and fun items awaiting bids of the guests.

The preliminary numbers for VillaRama 2014 show an increase of approximately $20,000 over last year. Thank you to Mrs. Donna Damon, Mrs. Becky Motley, Mrs. Pamela McQueen and Mrs. Soshana Bosley for all of their work on this successful event, an event made possible with the support of our entire Villa community.

About the CoverWe put out a call for pictures that expressed the idea of a vista which is defined as a view or prospect, a far-reaching mental view, a passage, or possibilities for the future. The picture we received from Dave Bellish, father of Camryn Bellish, a freshman at Villa, fit the description, but it wasn’t specifically of Villa. So we used Mr. Bellish’s picture as a back-ground for many of the pictures you see in this issue, pictures that provide a “vista” of Villa’s students and activities. There are two pictures on the cover that have no copy in the newsletter. The first is of Gabrielle Horn, a young violinist, who performed at Gallery Night. The second is the large Chinese dragon that was part of the elementary school’s celebration of the Chinese New Year. We hope that you will be inspired by this depiction of Villa’s vistas.
