Voltage transformers transform high voltages to standardized
values in control
equipment as relays and meters. A Voltage Transformer is nearly
similar to the general
purpose step down transformer. Two types of voltage transformer
are used for
protective-relaying purposes:
Instrument potential transformer or potential transformer
Capacitance potential device
A potential transformer mainly consists of primary and secondary
windings. The primary
winding is connected directly to the power circuit either
between two phases or
between one phase and ground, based on the rating of the
transformer and on the
requirements of the application. A capacitance potential device
is a voltage
transforming equipment using a capacitance voltage divider
connected between
phase and ground of a power circuit.
In turn there are two types of capacitance potential device.
Coupling-capacitor potential device Bushing potential device
Difference between the two devices is the type of capacitance
voltage divider used,
which in turn affects their rated burden. The coupling-capacitor
device uses a coupling
capacitor consisting of a stack of series-connected capacitor
units, and an auxiliary
capacitor.
Working:
The potential transformer works along the principle of
electromagnetic induction. It
converts voltages from high to low. It will take the thousands
of volts from power
transmission systems and steps the voltage down to something
that meters can handle.
These transformers are used with single and three phase systems.
They are attached to
a point in the systems where it is convenient to measure the
voltage.
A capacitor voltage device or capacitance coupled Low voltage
transformer is a
transformer used in power systems to step down extra high
voltage signals. The device
consists of three parts: two capacitors across which the
transmission line signal is split, an
inductive element to tune the device to the line frequency, and
a transformer to isolate
and further step down the voltage for the instrumentation or
protective relay. These
capacitance coupled voltage transformers are useful in
communication systems.
The capacitor elements are isolated with a high quality
polypropylene film or paper
dielectric and permeated with highly processed synthetic fluid.
Each capacitor section
consists of an expansion chamber which allows the synthetic
fluid to expand and

contract with changes in ambient operation temperatures. If
excessive pressure is built
up within the capacitor section, the expansion chamber will
engage a puncture pin,
resulting in pressure release and visual indication of a
problem.
