If there’s one thing the Al-varado Lady Indians can takefrom last season’s 12-21 finishand 1-9 District 8-3A campaign,it’s that it’s not how you start, buthow you finish.

That adage is used a lot to de-scribe a turnaround season. The

same is true for Alvarado, justnot in a good sense.

“I was flabbergasted, to tellyou the truth,” head coach JillBarkey said. “Before districtplay, we had a winning record fora time. That hadn’t happenedsince I’d been there.

“But when district started, we  just lost our consistency andstarted missing hits. We’d neverexperienced that kind of suc-cess.”

Barkey returns several playersfrom that team to try again.

Barkey said her biggest retun-ing threat is junior Amber Cha-tham, who she calls a “power hit-ter.”

Along with Chatham, theLady Indians will return fourother starters from last year’steam.

Seniors Kristen Mann, TaraSloan and Amanda Thomas areback, along with junior BriannaPenner.

Barkey said one of the moreexciting aspects of this year’steam will be the infusion of a tal-ented core of younger players

featuring sophomore Shelby Fra-zier.

“We’ll have quite a few new-comers this year, so it’ll be inter-esting to see how it goes,” shesaid. “This little sophomore

group is pretty talented.”Barkey said her team has a lot

to be excited about, and mentionedshe has continued to see increasinginterest during the summer in thevolleyball program.

“With the exception of Shelby,” she said. “All haveplayed together for three years,so there’s this good team dy-namic already.

“They’ve done a lot of stuff already which involves playing

camp and summer league.”The last few years have seen a

resurgence in the Alvarado boys’athletic departments with thefootball team soaring to the stateplayoffs last year and the basket-

ball team making the postseasonfor the first time in nine years.

The Lady Indians’ programs;however, have continued tostruggle.

Barkey said she wants volley-ball to change that.

“With the work we did in theoffseason, and with the strategieswe’ve implemented, that’s goingto play a huge role when we playsome of these tougher teams,”she said. “That Robinson tourna-

ment is going to be tough but I’mexcited to see that put into effect

Alvarado is in the same district as perennial power Kenne-dale and Barkey said it’s up tothe Lady Indians to make thei

mark.“This year, we’re prepared

better,” she said. “When we firsstarted in this district, it felt likewe could always count on beat-ing Hillsboro and Venus.

“When that didn’t happen lasyear, we would kind of freak outWe need to learn to not do that inthat situation.

“With all these newcomers onvarsity, I’m interested to see howthey handle it.”

The Lady Elks have competedthrough the years with the sameintensity that sports writers getafter Mama’s pizza.

They dig in and hunker downfor the duration, devouring oppo-nents in the process.

Burleson, though, is a littledifferent this year. Directingthings is first-year coach D’AnnaNewton, who begins her thirdyear in the district taking over aprogram with good history.

“This opportunity came upand I was very fortunate to getit,” said Newton, who coached atthe Kerr Middle School before

transferring to the high schoollast year to become an assistantbasketball and track coach alongwith her academic duties.

“I want things to be disci-plined with good communica-tion. [Former coach] Jill Kimballhas done a great job.

“I’m taking a little bit of whatshe did and a little stuff of mineand mixing together.”

Whether the concoction thatfollows is a return to the playoffs

won’t be known until the gamesare played out the next fewmonths.

Nonetheless, the word “re-building” is a term heard abouttown, which to Burlesonites isequivalent to mentioning thecancellation of “My Life as Liz.”

You just don’t say thosethings.

The cupboard isn’t exactlybare.

It never is at this place. Qual-ity volleyball players here are ascommon as traffic and stop lightson Wilshire.

Six return from a playoff teamin 2010. Kimball’s third-place

finisher in District 7-4A waseliminated in bidistrict by Stephenville.

Senior outside hitters AndreaDewberry and Alex Irby, alongwith junior outside hitter AbbySeamster and sophomores HollyMilam (middle blocker) and Alana Hughes (setter) form the coreof what Newton hopes is a play-off returner.

“We have to come together asa team and everybody has tohave the right attitude and workextremely hard,” Newton said.

“I’m very excited.“It’s looking good. It should

be exciting.”

The Godley Lady Cats returna great deal of experience in2011, but also lost key piecesfrom last year's playoff team.

They will be without BradySanders, Ashley Allen (a three-year letterman), Abby Kelley, all-state libero Janette Villegas, set-ter Megan Campbell and setterChelsee Clark. Sanders and Allenwere forces on the front row forthe Lady Cats.

“We're going to be inexperi-enced," head coach Todd Weesesaid. "But we've got some goodkids coming up off our JV teamwhich tied for first in districtplay last year.

“We'll be starting over at thesetter position.”

Weese said Godley will returnboth middle blockers, but filling

the libero hole left by Villegaswill be another story."Janette did such a good job

for us," he said. "It's going to de-pend on how the new playersstep in. They're not necessarilyyoung, they're just inexperi-enced."

Godley will bring up seniorDallas Young at the outside hitterspot along with senior RachelleJohns who "might play setter."

Seniors Lauren Phillips andMikala McDonald will also re-

turn for Godley bringing the totalto eight.

"Other kids who are probablygoing to make the varsity are ju-nior Lynsie James and sopho-mores Courtney Traylor and Cal-lie Mantooth."

Traylor and James are settersand Mantooth is an outside hitter.

Key returners for Godley will

be seniors Tolli Wylie, AnnaPerez, Brittney Neill, BaileyWatson and junior MaelanBrown.

"I think they all played well atthe end of last year," Weese said."They played a lot during ourplayoff run. I think our seniorswill be good leaders.

"Tolli and Anna have been onvarsity since they were sopho-mores so the leadership from themwill be really good. Those kids thathave played on JV, five of themhave played together, so they'llhave really good chemistry."

Godley's main district compe-tition will be Peaster and Brock,

Weese said. Godley lost both dis-trict games to Brock last year andtook the Lady Eagles to a fifthgame in the playoffs.

"Brock has their all-state set-ter and middle blocker back so Iexpect them to be strong," he

said. "Peaster is probably goingto be second. It'll be the samesituation as last year where we'refighting for our lives."

Weese said the seniors haveset high goals in all the sportsthey play, and volleyball will beno different.

"This class of kids has beenmaybe one of our best ever," hesaid. "They've set to go furthethan the regional quarterfinalswhich is the farthest we've evebeen."

The Cleburne Lady Jacketsvolleyball team is without FloydRogers roaming the sidelines forthe first time in nine years.

Rogers left for Odessa to pur-sue business opportunities afterhelping lead the Lady Jackets tothe playoffs the last two years, and after 13 years with the pro-gram.

Former Crowley assistantcoach Sara Hinson is now thehead coach for the Lady Jackets, who return 10 seniors from lastyear’s fourth-place team, and it’sher first as a head coach.

She was an assistant with theLady Eagles before moving toCleburne and she said the LadyJackets need to prove themselvesto her and have done so sincepractice started on Aug. 1

“Based on what I’ve seen dur-

ing open gym and during two-a-days, the seniors are the first onesto enter the drills and the last onesto leave,” she said. “They’re try-ing to help in any and every waypossible.”

Lacy Stinebaugh heads up thesenior class at the setter position.Stinebaugh is a four-year letter-man and is one of the players Hin-son said is assuming her leader-ship role.

“She and Kaci King have re-ally stepped up right off the bat,”

Hinson said. “Those two havestepped up and are pushing theothers to work hard in practice.”

Also returning for the LadyJackets are seniors Alexa Neal,Jade Fails, Kayla Ingram, DanikaSlokovic, Macie Cashiom andStephanie Morin. Juniors HillaryKing and Kendall Jones also re-turn.

Cleburne has a talented groupof underclassmen led by sopho-more Brianna Reband, who

started for the varsity last year asa freshman.

Hinson said the thing whichhas impressed her most about thisyear’s team is its chemistry.

“They all work really, reallywell together,” she said. “Theykind of feed off each other and if one steps up, then the rest of themdo.

“They’re right behind eachother doing it and they work re-ally well as a group.”

Courtney Connor is anotherreturner for the Lady Jackets.

Hinson said the team has hadto prove themselves and “re-earn”their positions with her as thehead coach.

“Kendall has been pretty pow-erful,” she said. “Jade has also im-proved a lot over the summer andher timing is coming around.

“Brianna is another one of ourstrong hitters. Courtney will beable to provide us with anothersetter.”

Hinson added the underclass-men are helping to set the tone.

“It’s not just the seniors,” shesaid. “And that’s exciting.”

Morin and Jones were two of Cleburne’s main offensive weap-ons last year. Reband took homenewcomer of the year honors inDistrict 7-4A.

Cleburne finished in fourthplace in the 7-4A standings last

year behind Burleson, Summiand Granbury.

Hinson said she expects theexperienced Lady Jackets to be upnear the top of the pile this year.

“I think this is our chance,”she said. “I expect us to competefor the district title.”

The Burleson Centennial vol-leyball team this year will dowhat no other team in school’stwo-year history has ever done.

Play a varsity schedule.

And if you think the fact of inexperience in the big leagueswill lower the Spartans’ expecta-tions of themselves … thinkagain.

“I think if they continue theteam mind-set and if they workas hard for what they say theywant …,” coach Melissa Colesaid. “The say they want it.”

Wait, wait, wait. What is “it,” coach?“They want to make the play-

offs,” said Cole, no inexperi-enced coach. She built playoff teams in each of her four years atAzle before accepting the posi-tion at the new high school inBurleson last year.

“They’re aiming high. Theirmind-set is: Let’s go after every-body like we’re in to win thewhole thing and see where wewind up. You never want to shootlower than what you can do.”

No jockey ever won a horse

race encouraging his beast with“whoa.”

That there is a fact, as is thereality that the Spartans have notone senior or anyone with anyvarsity experience.

“We don’t have seniors, sowe’re very young, and that’s OKwith me,” said Cole, who addedthat she has had to spend moretime than she should might ordi-narily on basic fundamentalswith her inexperienced bunch.

“My kids are better than at theend of last year.

“Our defense is strong, andwe’re getting there with our of-

fense.”Centennial will play in Dis-

trict 7-3A against such stalwartsas Bridgeport, Castleberry, Deca-tur, which has 12 seniors, LakeWorth and Mineral Wells.

The Spartans junior varsitywent 19-14 last year with somenondistrict varsity games mixedin.

Key players include sopho-more libero Katie Revrovich and

juniors Brenna Moritz, and out-side hitter, and Courtney Co-

lomo, a middle blocker. The Spartans can be defined

as inexperienced, but no one,Cole said, can define her team’sdrive.

“We’ll give teams a run fortheir money,” Cole said. “They

want to prove that we may beyoung, we may have less experience than you guys, but we’reworking just as hard and we havethe talent and attitude to do it.”

There’s that word again …“it.” The playoffs.

Regardless of the outcomethough, the Spartans will livetheir school’s creed.

Winning has become a tradi-

tion for Grandview volleyball. From 2009's regional finalists

to advancing to the regionalquarterfinals the last two years, head coach Stacy Bartosh saidshe knows her players, both newand old, realize what's at stakewhen they sign up to play volley-ball at Grandview.

“The expectation and stan-dards have been set by the teamsbefore them,” she said. "Theyunderstand the position they're in

and they know they're playingfor Grandview. We're alwayswanting to be the best we can beand we want to let the traditionbring that out in us."

Grandview finished in secondplace in District 15-2A last yearwith a 26-12 overall record and

an 8-2 mark in district play be-hind Whitney.

Grandview returns seniorsRandi and Rikki Self, Raven Mc-

Grath, Melody Mayse and KellyRichardson, along with juniorsBrittany Tschoepe and KalaniBasham.

Bartosh described this year'steam as versatile and called it the“most veteran club since 2009.”

“We have some designatedback-row players,” she said. “Forthe most part, this team is reallyversatile and we have some girlswho can play both front and backrow. I expect to see a lot of our

girls in a lot of places.“Melody and Kalani are spe-cifically defensive specialists.Everyone else goes back andforth from the front row to theback row.”

Bartosh added she expectsTschoepe and Randi Self to con-

tinue to anchor the Lady Zebras'offensive attacks at the outsidehitter position.

“I expect a lot from them

since they have the most var-sity experience,” she said. “Ihave several girls who playedback row for us last year and Iknow Kelly can play on thefront, too.

“It's hard to say this early un-til you put that team together.”

Grandview only lost threeplayers to graduation in ChanciPruitt, Portia Henry and TaylorPrice, so the Lady Zebras willhave plenty of experience.

“I feel like we're going to be a

new team, but I still feel likewe'll be a solid team,” Bartoshsaid. “This is a solid ball cluband I feel like we have what ittakes to win the district title.

“I don't want to discount any-one, but we've just got to put thework in.”

Champion Whitney was hithard by graduation, Bartosh said, and that leaves the door open for

Grandview to claim the Distric15-2A title.

“I think we'll continue to dowhat we've done in the past,” shesaid. “We're a ball-control teamand we're going to be fundamentally sound.

“This year, we might look a

little different offensively, buwe're a year older.”

Bartosh added that juniorsHarley Griffith, Paige Pollack andAlexis Wheeler will be expectedto contribute immediately aftemoving up from the JV team.

“They're all three nice contributors,” she said. “I'll expecthem to contribute one way oanother to the team.”

The Joshua Lady Owls arelooking to compete for a playoff spot in their second year of Dis-trict 7-4A play. Head coachHeather Strebeck said an attitudechange in the offseason and with

the upperclassmen this year maydo the trick.

Joshua returns seniors Mor-gan Howard and Sarah Hanick

from last year’s team, which fin-ished on the outside looking in of the playoff picture.

Also returning are juniorsKatherine Martin, MaddisonMoad and Hannah Nelson.

The biggest positive improve-ment, Strebeck said, in the influxof 20-25 JV players who made ittheir business to improve overthe summer.

“There’s a big group thatworked really hard this summerand played in club league andfound a summer league coach to

help them,” she said. “They prac-ticed twice a week, and it’shelped us come back and look alot better.”

From that group are twofreshmen in Callie Payne andAshley Brackel, who Strebecksaid can make a positive impactright away.

“I was a little afraid of bring-ing them up just because thelevel of speed from eighth gradeto varsity,” she said. “It’s a hugechange, but because those two

have played club all year, they’vefigured out their cohesion.

“The older girls have defi-nitely made them feel at homeand it’s been great.”

Strebeck said the upperclass-men and seniors on the team feela burden to succeed, but aren’ttrying to pass it off as a personalmission.

“They’re very good positiveleaders who believe in the pro-gram and our goals for the pro-

gram,” she said. “They help mo-tivate and take it upon them-selves, but not in an overbearingway like we’ve had in the past.

“They’ve learned how to eventhat part out and not have a ‘do itfor me and me only because I’ma senior’ attitude. They handle itrespectably and the other playersabsolutely feed off of that.”

Having so many players onthe JV who practiced hard overthe summer increases the prospects for the varsity team, Stre

beck said.“It’s given us a lot more to

choose from, skill-wise,” shesaid. “The summer workoutshave helped them tremendouslyand they’ve come in ready to doteam stuff instead of us having tobreak it down and work on ourskills.”

Strebeck said all of this meansthe Lady Owls will have moreoptions on both sides of the balthan in years past.

“The upperclassmen who

worked their tails off are hereand they’re ready,” she said. “It’sbeen great. Defensively, I thinkwe’ll be a lot better, and we’vegot some things we haven’t hadin the past on the front row.

“We have four hitters nowand a good balance on the offensive and defensive sides of theball. Now they just need to exe-cute when it comes to be gametime.”

The Keene Lady Chargers arefacing a familiar dilemma for the2011 season — they’re small.

But that doesn’t stop Keenefrom being competitive, headcoach Michelle Smiley-Connelly

said. The Lady Chargers lost Illi-ana Castillo, Holly Wilson, SarahGow, Lorina Kurn and ShanonAnitak to graudation, but returnplenty of young experience insophomores Jenna Bulles andEmily Aaron.

Also returning for Keene are  junior Keishla Morales and se-nior Jamari Munoz.

Castillo was Keene’s setterlast season and an all-district se-lection. The Lady Chargers need

to rebuild around their youngertalent, Connelly said.

“Whitney was definitely theteam to beat last year,” she said.“Their size was a factor. Thenyou have Rio Vista and Grand-view who are teams to beat andin the fight for that third placespot.

“Clifton was really young aswell.”

Connelly said being young aswell as small presents a lot to

overcome, but said she has faithin her Lady Chargers if they can

focus on the basics and maxi-mize their strengths.

“We’re trying to figure outour roles right now,” she said.“We’re learning that anything ispossible and, if we can sell theidea to the kids, that we can beatanyone.”

Also on the varsity will be ju-nior Amanda Langmos and fresh-man Zayda Gonzalez.

Connelly had high praise forGonzalez.

“She’s a very consistentserver and a good all-around

player,” she said. “The bad thingis we’re all short. We’re smallerthan last year so we’re going tohave to rely a lot on digging theball, playing defense and ourserving.”

Connelly said her team willrealize when it steps out on thecourt that they’re mostly going tobe at a size disadvantage, butadded the Lady Chargers can’tlet that effect the outcome of thegame.

“I think they’re going to beaware of that,” she said. “It’s go

ing to focus on us playing smarand hard and really working onplacing the ball. I can see us get-ting better as the year goes on.”

The Rio Vista Lady Eaglesare coming off a historic 2010season in which they made theplayoffs for the first time inyears.

The Lady Eagles have severaladjustments to make this yearwith previous coach TinaMeadors gone and new headcoach Liza Guajardo in.

Meadors had brought a bit of continuity to the program stayingfor two years, but Guajardo saidshe likes the talent level she hasfor the 2011 season.

Rio Vista returns juniorsKrissa Reese and Jordan Rotha, along with senior Bailey Sim-mons. Other seniors are Lauren

Clayton and Elysa Torres.

“They’re good at workinghard,” Guajardo said. “Every-thing I’ve asked, they’ve done.I’m trying to make sure theywork hard and get the basicsdown. It’s about having fun aswell.”

Guajardo hails from McAllenwhere she coached volleyballbefore heading to Rio Vista.

She said Rio Vista’s strengthwill be in its outside hitters.

“I have two pretty strong hit-ters,” she said. “Rotha will bevaluable for us as our setter andKrissa and Bailey will be our bighitters.”

Guajardo said she expects RioVista to at least contend for thirdplace again in the fall, and aspireto reach even higher in 2012

when Rotha and Reese are se-

everything they can and to learnthe game so well so that nextyear, it should be easier for themto reach the playoffs,” she said.“The playoffs are our goal thisyear, but next year it should beeven more reachable.”

She said she expects the un-derclassmen to learn from the

older players.“Our goal is to be equal o

better than the last year,” Gua  jardo said. “I haven’t seemuch of the district, but my

goal is for us to repeat in thirdplace or go for second place owin the district.”
