The Venue at UCF

One of the elite volleyball-only facilities in the nation, The Venue at UCF seats 2,000 fans for volleyball matches and is located on the north side of campus. Formerly the UCF Arena, the facility was completely renovated and re-opened in April 2008 as an 87,000-square foot multi-purpose, air-conditioned facility.

The 31,000-square foot first floor at The Venue contains locker rooms, player lounges and an equipment room. From the locker room, student-athletes have access to a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility.

A 2,000-square foot weight room is also located on the first floor. The weight room provides the Knights with access to free weight and machine equipment, cardio and treadmills.

The second level contains spacious office and meeting space for the women’s volleyball staff, as well as the men’s and women’s basket-ball staffs. It also houses practice courts for the UCF men’s and women’s basketball teams.

UCF’s gameday playing surface is now a state-of-the-art Sport Court. Sport Court has been the official playing surface of USA Volleyball for the past 18 years, and has been the only court surface used for the men’s and women’s NCAA Volleyball Championships for the last 16 years.

The UCF volleyball team opened The Venue in prime form on Sept. 2, 2008, when it hosted eventual NCAA national-runner up, Stan-ford, in front of a crowd of 1,568 fans. The crowd in attendance helped the Knights honor members of UCF’s 1978 AIAW national cham-pionship squad with a banner-dropping ceremony.

When he first took the UCF volleyball coach-ing job three years ago, Todd Dagenais fig-

ured the team would be a quick fix to turn into a winner because of the vast resources on cam-pus. History has since taught Dagenais that such turnarounds usually happen in a matter of years instead of a matter of months. But now, with elite recruits in place, several talented returners on the roster and competent depth, Dagenais feels UCF’s volleyball squad is on the verge of a breakout season. “It took longer than I thought it would and I guess I didn’t understand the history of volley-ball. There’s only been two teams go from last in their conference to first in a five-year timeframe. I thought we’d come in and turn it around, but it just doesn’t work like that,” said Dagenais, who is entering his fourth season at UCF. “We set out to build this right. We thought we could do it maybe in three or four years, but it’s going to be four or five to do it right by the book. We’ve started with academics and social decisions, and then comes winning on the court. The first two parts are in place and now it’s about winning on the court.” Winning as in cracking into Conference USA’s top four teams along with traditional power-house programs Tulsa, SMU and Houston. And winning as in possibly getting a bid to play in the NCAA Tournament. Because volleyball pro-grams recruit in two-year cycles, Dagenais has two fully-stocked recruiting classes and he feels his fourth season leading the Knights will be the best yet. The season begins Friday night with the Knights hosting the Courtyard by Marriott/UCF Classic. Michigan State, South Alabama and North Florida are scheduled to compete in the event. “I picked us fourth (in C-USA) and I don’t apol-

ogize for it,” said Dagenais, whose Knights were 16-16 last season and 9-11 in league play. “Last year, we were two matches out of fifth and we had two five-set losses. I felt we should have been in the top half last year. I think we’ll have a breakout year this season, but I don’t know to what degree. This is the year that we want to be knocking on the door on Selection Sunday (for the NCAA Tournament). We want our name on the board. To do that we have to have a 20-win season and finish in the top-four in the confer-ence and we have to have an RPI in the 60s.” UCF’s rebuilding project can once again be witnessed in the youth of the roster. A season after having no seniors, Rachel Vukson is the lone senior this time around. And team leader Kristin Fisher’s 495 kills are gone. But UCF’s hopes are buoyed by the promise of sophomore standouts Angelica Crump and Nichole Riedel and a solid junior class led by Evi-ja Vilde , Tory McCutcheon , Meredith Murphy and Dani Harrison. Crump, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter from Atlanta, will be replacing Fisher as UCF’s top offensive threat. The coaching staff has worked to change her attack angles to make her a more efficient player. “She’s as athletic as any outside hitter in the country. She hasn’t been playing the game as long as some of the players, but she just jumps high and she hits hard,” Dagenais said. “Now, she’s starting to figure out the game. When she does that she’s going to be a lethal attacker.” Riedel bounced back nicely last season after suffering a season-ending injury during her true freshman season. The middle blocker had 210 kills last season, but that doesn’t tell the true story about her consistency and effectiveness. “We’ve got some pretty complicated block-ing schemes as to when to leave, when to stay and go, and Nichole is 95-percent accurate. It’s

unbelievable to make those kinds of reads that consistently,” Dagenais said. “She doesn’t jump what the young kids jump and maybe doesn’t hit as hard, but she is so smart and you have to have somebody like her on the floor because she just doesn’t make mistakes. That’s critical to have from someone in the middle. She’s becom-ing more than we thought she could be because we didn’t know she was this intelligent as a play-er.” Dagenais said that Vilde has had an exception-al training camp and will be a big contributor fol-lowing a down sophomore season. Harrison and Marie Reiterova have also made big strides and figure to bolster UCF’s depth this season. Dagenais said one look at the talent on UCF’s roster from top to bottom suggests that the pro-gram is on the right track. That has been clearly apparent in the classroom where the Knights had a 3.562 team grade-point average last sea-son and was honored by the American Volley-ball Coaches Association with a team academic award. Now, Dagenais thinks the Knights are about to win in the classroom and on the court this sea-son because of their wealth of talent. “At this level the difference is not your first or second player; the difference is your third through sixth players and then your depth. What happens when you have an injury? I think we’re as strong as we’ve ever been in that area as far as who fills in for whom,” he said. “Our strong players – we’ll have the Angelica Crumps of the world from here on out – but where we’re improving is in the backups. You see it in our freshmen. In a lot of ways they’re more athletic than the players ahead of them, but the older players have the experience. Volleyball isn’t just a run and jump game. The exciting side of it is we have these young, athletic players for years to come.’’

BIOGRAPHY

Todd Dagenais enters his fourth season as the UCF head volleyball coach in 2011, holding a 43-51 record heading into the year.

In 2010, The Knights under Dagenais recorded their best re-cord since the head coach took over in 2008. The squad opened the season with seven-straight wins, the best start for the squad since 1983 and since playing in the Division I ranks.

Overall, the 16-16 mark was a program-best since 2003, and the nine wins in conference were the highest since the Knights joined Conference USA in 2005.

The 2010 team also garnered two post-season awards as Kristin Fisher became only the third Knight in program history to be named to the All-C-USA Second Team. Nichole Riedel was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team, and it was the first time a pair of Knights were named to the All-C-USA teams in the same season.

In his sophomore coaching campaign with the Black and Gold, Dagenais helped guide outside hitter Erin Campbell to the team's second-consecu-tive All-Conference USA selection when she was honored with a spot on the league's second team at the conclusion of the 2009 season.

The skipper also honed the skills of his younger players in 2009, as six freshmen saw playing time at one time or another during the season.

In his first campaign at UCF, Dagenais made his presence known and proved quickly that he has what it takes to put UCF volleyball on the na-tional map.

Under Dagenais, the Knights posted a 15-17 overall record, its best mark since 2003, and matched its best C-USA record, going 6-10 in the fifth-toughest volleyball conference in the nation.

UCF jumped from 244 to 113 on the NCAA Women's Volleyball RPI with Dagenais at the helm, an improvement of 131 spots, and defeated five teams in C-USA that it had never previously beaten: East Carolina, Mar-shall, SMU, Tulsa and UTEP.

Additional firsts for the UCF volleyball program were achieved under the guidance of Dagenais in 2008, as Jenny Heppert became the first UCF volleyball player to be named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Amer-ican® after being named to the second team, while Stephanie Serna be-came the first Knight to be voted onto an All-C-USA Volleyball Team, earn-ing second-team honors at the conclusion of the season. Serna would then go on to earn AVCA All-Midwest Regional Honorable Mention hon-ors. Lauren Rosenthal added to the firsts when she became the first UCF volleyball player to be named a C-USA Player of the Week, earning Setter of the Week honors on two occasions.

Dagenais also managed to bring in one of the most dominant volleyball teams in NCAA history when Stanford helped the Knights open the newly completed Venue at UCF on Sept. 2. A crowd of 1,568 fans came to the opening match in which Dagenias and the Knights also honored the 1978 UCF volleyball squad that claimed the AIAW National Championship.

In the summer of 2009, Daganais served as a member of the staff at the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryout at the U.S. Olympic Training

Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Dagenais was a court coach and evalu-ator at the event, putting the players through physical testing, drills and match play.

The skipper was also selected by Championship Productions, one of the countries leading sports instructional video companies, to make an in-structional video on how to train a libero.

Before assuming the post at UCF, Dagenais spent three seasons as the assistant head coach at the University of Southern California where he helped guide the Trojans to a 29-5 record in 2007 and a trip to the 2007 NCAA Final Four for the fourth time in six seasons. USC closed out a suc-cessful 2007 campaign by ranking third in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll.

Dagenais was also part of the USA Volleyball National Team Coaching Delegation to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He spent prior time as a volunteer assistant coach with the USA National Team and joined the team on domestic and foreign tours. Since his involvement in the 2004 Olympics, Dagenais has continued his work with USA volleyball as a lead court coach and director of USA High Performance tryouts.

Adding to his coaching accomplishments in 2007, Dagenais was the head coach for the USA White Select National Team that won the silver medal at the USA Volleyball High Performance National Championships.

Prior to his appointment at USC, Dagenais spent one season with USA Volleyball working to identify and develop future National Team players. From 1998-03 he served as the associate head volleyball coach at Michi-gan State where it competed in the NCAA Tournament all five seasons during Dagenais' tenure. Dagenais was also an assistant coach at North-ern Michigan in 1998, serving as the recruiting and travel coordinator for the Wildcats which competed in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Dagenais received his bachelor's degree in sports medicine (with an em-phasis in exercise physiology) from Central Michigan in 1995. He played on the Chippewas' men's club team for four years and was also a certified athletic trainer.

His coaching philosophy has been a fusion of several different styles learned while working under former National Team and Michigan State head coach Chuck Erbe, 2000 Olympic Team head coach Toshi Yoshida and 2004 Olympic head coach and current University of Southern Califor-nia head coach Mick Haley.

MICHELLE CHATMANAssistant Head Coach Fourth Season

BIOGRAPHY

Michelle Chatman is in her fourth season as part of the UCF volleyball staff. She serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator and middle-blocker coach.

Under her tutelage, the front line for the Knights in 2010 registered 82 total block solos on the year, matching the fourth-best total for a single-season.

This past summer, Chatman served as one of three assistant coaches for the 2011 USA Volleyball Women’s National A2 Program. She worked alongside head coaches Geoff Carlston (Ohio State), Fran Flory (LSU) and Kelly Sheffield (Dayton) as an assistant with the program, while also work-

ERIK PETERSONAssistant Coach Third Season

BIOGRAPHY

Erik Peterson enters his second season as an assistant coach for the UCF volleyball team in 2010.

In 2010, Peterson helped UCF to its best record since 2003 (16-16) and saw the Knights win the most league matches (9) since joining Conference USA in 2005.

Prior to coaching in Orlando, Peterson spent four seasons as the assistant coach at USF. While with the Bulls, he helped guide the squad from a 4-22 record in his first season with the team to a 19-10 record in three short years. Peterson’s primary duties at USF were developing the skills of both the outside hitters and defensive specialists and serving as the secondary recruiter and director of volleyball operations.

Peterson was hired at USF after having worked with the USA Women’s National Team as it prepared for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. As an assistant with the national team, he assisted the head coach in all facets of practice progression and also took classes at the USOC coaching sciences department.

ing with fellow assistant coaches Kim Jagd and Brian Hosfeld.

Thanks to her hard work on the recruiting trail, the Knights’ 2010 and 2011 recruiting classes were recognized by PrepVolleyball.com as one of the top 100 recruiting classes in the nation.

Chatman came to UCF after serving the previous two seasons as an as-sistant coach at Georgetown University.

As an assistant at with the Hoyas, Chatman coordinated all recruiting ef-forts, while also serving as the director of operations for the team, man-aging travel and equipment.

Prior to being named an assistant at Georgetown, Chatman spent the 2005 season as a student assistant coach at the University of Florida, her alma mater. While assisting the Gators, the team posted a 33-3 overall record and made an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight.

Chatman was a four-year letterwinner while a member of the Gators’ squad and was named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American Honorable Mention selection as a middle blocker following her 2004 season. Chatman earned her first All-America honor of her ca-reer after a senior season that saw her post the ninth-best single-season hitting percentage in UF history (.393). Chatman also garnered AVCA East Region accolades in 2002.

During her four seasons as a Gator, the volleyball team posted a 126-10 overall record and made four-consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tour-nament, including the NCAA Final Four in 2002 and the national champi-onship match in 2003.

Chatman has also managed camps for the Girls Club of Alachua County (Fla.) and was an assistant coach for the Gainesville Juniors Volleyball Club.

Originally from Woodridge, Ill., Chatman earned a bachelor’s of arts de-gree in sociology and a bachelor’s of science degree in family, youth and community sciences from Florida in 2006.

Peterson began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Florida in 2003. That season, he helped lead the Gators to the NCAA Championship match and a 36-2 record. Peterson’s primary duties while at Florida were assisting with on-court training and individual sessions, scouting of opponents’ offensive tendencies and charting video for the All-America Selection Committee.

The assistant’s first coaching opportunity was at McIntosh High School in 1999. As the head coach of the freshman team, he led his squad to a 15-1 record. Peterson then moved into club coaching as the assistant coach of the South Atlanta Volleyball Club. In 2002, he returned to McIntosh High to serve as the head coach of the junior varsity team and the interim head coach of the varsity team, leading the varsity squad to its first appearance in the Elite Eight.

Peterson remains actively involved in the USA Volleyball Development Program. In the summer of 2006, he was an assistant coach at the Youth A2 High Performance Camp in Colorado Springs, Colo. In that position, Pe-terson assisted in the training of the top-50 players in the youth national team age group under the guidance of Chuck Erbe, trained the outside hitters and coached the Youth National Team USA Gold to a fifth-place finish at the Junior National Tournament international division at the USA High Performance Championships.

Peterson has also served as a head coach at both the St. Leo and George Mason Developmental Camps and remains a lead tryout coach for USA Volleyball High Performance.

A graduate of Concordia College in Bronxville, N.Y., Peterson earned his bachelor’s degree in biology in 1999. While at Concordia, Peterson was a member of the men’s intercollegiate volleyball team from 1994-98, serv-ing as captain his final two seasons. He was distinguished as the 1995 Concordia College Freshman Athlete of the Year and was named to nu-merous all-tournament teams. During his senior campaign he set a NCAA record for career digs with 1,103.

2010 Season ReviewSince third-year head coach Todd Dagenais took

over the UCF volleyball team in 2008, the Knights have eclipsed milestones, experienced numerous firsts and captured the hearts of it fans. But, in no sea-son before have those milestones and firsts been as evident as they were in 2010, as the Black and Gold posted a 16-16 overall record, its best since 2003, and a program-best 9-11 Conference USA clip on the year.

Here is a look at the UCF's additional accomplish-ments this season:

Team • Posted its best record since 2003 with a 16-16 over-all mark• Tallied a program-best nine wins in C-USA action• Opened the season with seven-straight wins, the best start for the squad since 1983 and since playing in the Division I ranks• Played its most conference matches in program-his-tory after carrying a 20-match league schedule• Its nine solo blocks at SMU on Oct. 29 was the fourth-highest total in program-history• Tied for fourth and ninth on the all-time register after posting 29 block assists vs. Tulane and 26 block assists at Memphis, respectively• The team's 17.5 total blocks vs. the Green Wave on Nov. 5 ranked ninth all-time• Totaled 82 total block solos on the year, matching the fourth-best total for a single-season

Individual • Kristin Fisher became only the third Knight in pro-gram-history to garner a spot on the All-C-USA Second Team• Nichole Riedel was the first UCF volleyball player to earn a spot on the C-USA All-Freshman Team• The duo was the first to be named to All-C-USA teams in the same season• Kristin Fisher and Rachel Vukson became the first duo to earn C-USA Player of the Week honors in the same week, while Fisher was the first to earn Offen-sive Player of the Week honors, and Vukson became the third Knight to garner Setter of the Week acco-lades• Tory McCutcheon and Kristin Fisher were the first duo to be named to the C-USA All-Academic Team in the same season, while they were only the second and third players all-time to be named to the squad• Tory McCutcheon became the fourth player in pro-gram history to earn a spot on the ESPN Academic All-District III team when she was named to the second team for her work in the classroom and on the court• Meredith Murphy brought her career dig total to 980, good for ninth on the program's all-time register• Meredith Murphy's 489 digs in 2010 rank third on the single-season record chart, while her 4.14 digs per set rank second• With 495 kills on the season, Kristin Fisher posted the 10th best kill total all-time, and also posted the most kills by a Knight in a single season since 2002

With all of the firsts the team recorded this season, the Knights are still only beginning to scratch the surface of the success that is on their horizon, as the squad's starting lineup in 2010 consisted of only one senior and one junior, while three sophomores and two freshmen rounded out the starting six and the libero position.

The team's biggest offensive threat throughout the season was senior Kristin Fisher. The outside hitter was named to the All-C-USA Second Team after aver-aging 4.27 kills per set and totaling 548.5 points for the Black and Gold during her final campaign. She also became the first UCF volleyball player to earn C-USA's

Offensive Player of the Week Award after putting to-gether a pair of strong performances against UTEP in the final league series of the year.

"I was so pleased to see Kristin earn a spot on the all-conference team this year," Dagenais said. "I was so proud of what she was able to do over her three years with us. I hope that she really was an inspiration to her teammates and the future generations, because that is what she should be. She really is a true success story."

Fisher not only earned awards for her achievements on the court, but she was also honored for her out-standing work in the classroom and in the community as well. The health sciences major earned the fall C-USA Spirit of Service Award, while also garnering a spot on the C-USA All-Academic Team.

Joining Fisher on the C-USA All-Academic Team was sophomore Tory McCutcheon. The middle blocker led the Knights in blocks per set (0.78) and hitting per-centage (.332) and averaged 1.51 kills per set on the court, while also maintaining a 3.97 cumulative GPA as a biology major. McCutcheon was also honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA) with a spot on the ESPN Academic All-District III Second Team at the conclusion of the season.

"It has been our absolute mission to be the definition of student-athletes," Dagenais said. "And Tory earn-ing a spot on the all-district team is a product of that mission and a product of her taking her academics ex-tremely seriously."

Redshirt freshman Nichole Riedel also made major contributions to the Knights' success on the court, and was honored by C-USA as UCF's first-ever all-freshman team selection. The middle blocker led the Knights in total blocks (85) and block assists (74), while ranking second in attack percentage (.311).

"Nichole came back this season following a season-ending injury last year and performed at a really, re-ally nice level," Dagenais said. "And it is so amazing to think that was just the first of four years that we are going to have with her."

Another individual that had an immediate impact on the squad was junior Rachel Vukson, who transferred to UCF from Tulsa. The setter led the Knights to a .201 attack percentage on the season and averaged 10.01 assists per set. She also earned C-USA Setter of the Week honors following the Knights' series vs. UTEP.

"When we talk about the impact of the newcomers, I think you definitely have to start with Rachel," Da-genais said. "Our kill percentage, hitting percentage, hitting efficiency, kills per set, etc., are all at six-year highs and that starts with the person that is dealing the ball. I think that she had an immeasurable impact on our team this year."

One player that capitalized on Vukson's experience was outside hitter Angelica Crump, who was seeing the floor for the first time in 2010. With Vukson's great leadership, Crump only got stronger as the year progressed and finished her rookie campaign with 229 kills to go along with a team-high 23 block solos.

"We knew that for us to achieve our long-term goals, Angelica had to get in as many matches as possible," Dagenais stated. "So we went with her as much as we humanly could, and I think it paid dividends and will continue to pay dividends for the future success of our program."

Fellow rookie Roxy Mendez was a pleasant surprise for Dagenais and his coaching staff in the back court, as she played in 28 of the team's 32 matches and tal-lied 185 digs. Along with Mendez, sophomores Mer-edith Murphy and Dani Harrison also provided solid defense and superb passing for the Black and Gold. Murphy paced the squad with 489 digs as the Knights' libero, a mark that ranks third on the program single-season register, while Harrison contributed 283 digs on the year.

"Dani really came into her own this year," Dagenais said. "Her passing numbers were fantastic and she was running neck-and-neck all year long with Mer-edith for the libero position. But Meredith just contin-ues to be reliable. She is an elite-caliber libero both in offensive serve receive and defensively."

Another sophomore starter on the Knights' roster was Evija Vilde, who was the team's right side threat. Vilde ranked second on the team with 246 kills and 302.0 points, while leading the Knights with 32 service aces.

"Evija continues to learn the collegiate game and I think that offensively she has her best two years still ahead of her," Dagenais said. "I also think that she is pushing to become more of an all-around player be-ginning next season."

Marie Reiterova was also learing the collegiate game last season. The setter suffered an early-season inju-ry, which sidelined her for large parts of the season, but Dagenais has high hopes for her future with the squad.

"As Marie gains more experience and gets more used to NCAA volleyball, she will get more and more play-ing time," Dagenais said. "She is the future of our set-ting and she has the athletic ability to really be domi-nating at the net, not just as a setter, but as a blocker, a hitter and a server."

Besides Fisher, both Sara Rex and Brittanie Wallace also played their final season in 2010. Rex finished her career averaging 0.67 blocks per set to go along with a .291 career attack percentage, 164 kills and 226 points for the Black and Gold. Wallace concluded her UCF ca-reer with career-highs in kills, kills per set, attack per-centage, digs, blocks and points in 2010.

"Brittanie provided a lot of important roles for us on the court, but what she did off of the court was unbe-lievable," Dagenais said. "Sara was always open-mind-ed and did whatever we needed her to do to help the team. Kristin, Brittanie and Sara will be greatly missed and we wish them all the best in their future endeav-ors."

Dagenais redshirted three players during the 2010 season in Kaye-Alese Green, Katie Tatum and Allison Rinderknecht, but credits them for preparing the team for matches throughout the season.

With all the positives that came out of the 2010 vol-leyball season, Dagenais, his staff, the Knights and the fans can all expect even better things in the years to come. The squad returns four starters and its libero, and will also bring in some high-level prep talent for the coming season.

Here's looking at another season of firsts in 2011.
