Shield Volcanoes

• Shield Volcanoes are mostly made of fluid lava flows. Flows of lava pours out from the central summit vent. Some of the largest volcanoes in the world are shield volcanoes.

Composite Volcanoes

• Composite volcanoes are classified by either being active, extinct or dormant. Active means they could erupt. Extinct means they are dead and wont erupt. Dormant means they are sleeping and could erupt at any time.

Cinder Cone Volcanoes

Cinder cones are the simplest type of volcano. They usually have a bowl shaped crater at the top. They are commonly found by the flanks of other volcanoes. Cinder cone’s are built from particles and blobs of solid lava ejected from a single vent.

Why do volcanoes occur?

Volcanoes do not occur randomly. They occur because the lithosphere is broken into slabs called tectonic plates. These plates moving about cause volcanoes to erupt.

Why do volcanoes occur?

• Plate tectonics is the theory that the lithosphere is broken into large pieces that move. When they run into each other, earthquakes happen and mountains can form.

Where do volcanoes happen?

Many of Earth’s volcanoes occur in the Ring of Fire. It got its name because it is ring around the Pacific Ocean marking a lot of Earth’s volcanoes.

Where do volcanoes also happen and how do they form?

• They happen on most of the Earth’s plate boundaries. They form when magma flows out through a crack in the Earth’s surface. The magma builds up and hardens slowly forming a volcano.

What are hot spots?

• A hot spot is an area of continuing volcanic activity. Examples would be Hawaii, Iceland, and Yellowstone.

What are some hazards volcanoes can produce?

• Volcanoes can be dangerous and harmful to life and peoples property. Volcanoes produce lava, ash falls, and debris avalanches.

What are some volcano safety tips?

Get to high ground and don’t freak out. Make sure you are not near the volcano that just erupted. You can also listen for warnings on the radio or TV.

Mount Tambora

• Mount Tambora is a historic volcano on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia. It is a composite volcano. Tambora’s 1815 outburst was the largest outburst in volcanic history.

Mount St. Helens

• During the last 4,000 years, Mount St. Helens has erupted more than any other volcano in the Cascade Range. It is 8,365 feet tall and located in the state of Washington.
