The new Gen Six Chevrolet Camaro and the Chevrolet Colorado with its all-new 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine have won the 2016 Motor Trend Car and Truck of the Year awards. It is the second consecutive Truck of the Year award for Colorado, the mid-size pickup in- troduced as a 2015 model. Motor Trend editors praised the Camaro for its lighter weight, which contributes to “world- class sports car performance and dynamics,” they wrote. The editors’ selection of the new Camaro and Colorado as the Car and Truck of the Year sur- prised even them. Jonny Lieberman, author of Motor Trend’s story about the award, wrote, “Before we started, had you asked any of us nine judges if the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro had a snowball’s chance in Hyundai’s desert proving grounds of winning our 2016 Car of the Year honors, almost all of us would have said no. “Most of us would have been surprised to even see the Camaro as a finalist – except for Angus MacKenzie, who told me: ‘On paper, it looked strong against a number of the criteria. If it drove well, it was in with a real shot.’ May we all be as wise. Still, it’s a flippin’ Camaro, man, forever destined to live in the shadow of the horsey from Dear- born, the Ford Mustang. The oth- er ponycar as our Car of the Year? Fat chance.” Motor Trend judges noted that the sixth-generation Camaro was quite an accomplishment and that the RS V6 3.6-liter Camaro’s eight-speed automatic transmis- sion offered “really great calibra- tion.” Judges also had kind things to say about the six-cylinder’s per- formance, saying it handled bet- ter than the Cadillac ATS. Judges said that as good as the V6 is, the V8 is even better. “Pouring forth from its glori- ous naturally aspirated, 6.2-liter LT1 V8 are 455 hp and 455 lb.-ft. of torque,” Lieberman wrote. “All that get up and go is transmitted to the sticky rear tires via a love- ly-shifting six-speed manual transmission. To say we liked this car is a severe understate- ment.” Judges also appreciated the value Camaro drivers get for the buck. They noted that a 275-hp turbo goes for $27,000, while a 335-hp model costs $28,500 and a 455-hp Camaro goes for $37,000. It seems that the world lovesDetroit iron.To that end, Roush Perform-

ance received the ExportAchievement Certificate from theU.S. Department of Commerce inrecognition of opening and ex-panding into foreign markets inthe Middle East and China. The award was presented to

the Livonia-based company atthe recommendation of the Spe-cialty Equipment Market Associ-ation (SEMA).“This award underscores

Roush Performance’s growth insales and brand development inglobal regions,” said Tim Wheel-er, vice president of Global Sales.“The 2015 Ford Mustang be-

came a global vehicle platformfor the first time ever, and it ignit-ed exciting demand from Mus-tang enthusiasts around theworld for our Roush Perform-ance appearance, styling, han-dling and power products.”Wheeler said that Roush Per-

formance is just doing what after-market parts companies do.“The aftermarket abhors a vac-

uum,” Wheeler said.“It will always come up with

the parts that are needed by carenthusiasts. And this is exactly the time to

be in the muscle car business. There are muscle car enthusiastsaround the world.A lot of them are 40 or 50 years

old and have finally bought themuscle car they’ve dreamed of.We call them ‘teenagers’ withmoney.”The company now sells Roush-

engineered performance partsand technologies for Ford Mus-

tangs and F-150 trucks in the Mid-dle East and China.Plus, Roush Performance dis-

tributes the RoushMustang vehi-cle program through Ford dealer-ships in Saudi Arabia and theUnited Arab Emirates. It also has plans to expand its

vehicle programs into China for2016.Wheeler said that Roush Per-

formance has always been close-ly tied to Ford. Now that Ford has created a

truly world-wide Mustang, it pre-sented the company with achance to expand its customerbase from basically the NorthAmerican market to a global mar-ket.“We grow as Ford’s perform-

ance market grows,” Wheelersaid.“The global release of the new

Mustang worldwide expandedexport opportunities for the SE-MA industry.Roush Performance led the in-

dustry in this global demand,”said Linda Spencer, senior direc-tor of international and govern-ment affairs for SEMA.SEMA is also helping guide

business development efforts forRoush Performance in Australia,South Africa and Western Eu-rope.SEMA provides members infor-

mation such as commerce, trade, exporting policies and customsfor conducting business in differ-ent global regions.“What I’ve found interesting,”

Wheeler said, “is that peoplewant their aftermarket parts tobe American. They covet Ameri-can kits.“I was recently in Dubai and

asked what if people could buy

locally-made parts and have thework done close by.“I was told that no, people

want the parts to be Americanand installed by Americans. Oth-erwise, it devalues the musclecar. I found the same thing true inChina.”Roush Performance is cele-

brating its 40th anniversary thisyear, Wheeler said. The company’s founder, Jack

Roush, maintained a close rela-tionship with Ford from the be-ginning.The company’s engineers have

worked with Ford engineers tomake sure Roush products areup to the job.

The expansion into foreignmarkets means Roush’s plantsin the U.S. are busier and thatthe company’s 2015 MustangFive Liter Supercharger kit isco-branded with Ford, Wheelersaid. It was worked on together

by engineers from both compa-nies during its developmentprocess.Commerce Department Assis-

tant Secretary Marcus Jadottepresented the Export Achieve-ment Certificate to Wheeler andRoush Performance’s TonyMarszalek and Paul Grant duringan awards ceremony at the SEMAShow last week.

There’s no reason that drivingby the seat of your pants shouldbe uncomfortable, whether youdrive a Ford Focus or a Ford F-150.There are many differences be-

tween driving a Ford Focus andan F-150 pickup, but both vehi-cles share one important feature– the comfort of their front seats, said Ford spokesman SethiDeeptie. Thanks to an innovative

design, the seats are multi-ad-justable, with features such asthigh extensions and lumbar sup-port.Helping to reduce muscle fa-

tigue and promoting blood flowon longer journeys, the seats canprovide a subtle massage forthighs and lower back, Deeptiesaid. And further adding to comfort,

the seats can warm or cool thedriver and front seat passenger. Those and many other comfort

features are in large part attribut-able to Ford’s global front seatarchitecture – which debuted onthe 2013 Escape and Fusion – andhas since migrated to most of thecompany’s lineup in North Amer-ica, said Johnathan Line, Fordglobal advanced seats innova-tion supervisor and technical ex-pert.The innovation serves as the

basis for Ford’s best-in-classranking for overall front seatcomfort among full-line manufac-turers in North America, Linesaid.“There was skepticism as to

whether building a seat structureto fit all vehicle sizes could bedone,” said Line. “The trick wasto turn our focus away from thevehicles, and concentrate in-stead on our customers.”In the design and engineering

phase, the seat team focused onitems such as “H-points” and“hip-to-heel” dimensions. These ratios represent the

science that goes into creatingin-vehicle comfort. Seats aredesigned to better cradle passen-gers at the hip and to preventsliding while driving. Side bol-sters and seat cushions allowmore freedom of movement sodrivers feel less confined. The Ford seat team refers to

the surfaces passengers touchand feel as “top hats” – leather orcloth seat covers atop foampadding. Beneath each top hat isa seat skeleton that serves as thebasis for Ford’s steadily climbingrankings for comfort, said Line.Taking cues from the office fur-

niture and first-class air travelindustries, the Ford front seat ar-chitecture is ergonomically de-signed to ensure each seat cra-dles an occupant comfortably, snug in certain places with free-dom to move in others. Dan Fer-retti, Ford global seats seniortechnical leader, said it’s impor-tant to highlight the commonali-ties and differences betweenseats’ various environments.“Our seats are designed to

hold people where they want tobe held, but without being

restricting,” Ferretti said. “Forexample, the side bolsters aretapered, which allows drivers tohave better movement of theirarms and legs.”At the heart of the structure is

an innovative two-piece designthat consists of cushion andback frame modules – both scala-ble parts. These Ford-engineeredparts are joined with four pur-chased fasteners at the back-to-cushion interfaces. They cometogether in a plug-and-play fash-ion to support more than 30 seat

configurations showcasing 20-plus comfort and conveniencefeatures.“The plug-and-play design is

really what sets this systemapart,” Ferretti said. “It enablesthe democratization of technolo-gy, so we’re able to make morefeatures available to more peo-ple.”The seat structure is mounted

using rails of varying height, which makes it best suited to avehicle’s interior environment,Ferretti said.

things to say about the 2016 Col-orado. In the story announcingthe magazine’s choice, Ron Kiinosaid that the question many peo-ple had was how the Colorado –2015’s Truck of the Year winner –could repeat. The answer wassimple.“For 2016, the Colorado is

available with a 181-horsepower,2.8-liter inline-four Duramaxdiesel, making it the only midsizetruck to offer such an engine(along with its GMC Canyoncousin),” Kiino wrote. “That’s asignificant powertrain addition, enough to warrant a title-defenseinvite. For the latter, the answeris a bit more complex but no lessconvincing.”Judges noted that the 2016

Colorado’s small size and lighterweight produced “unusually”sharp steering and deft handling. The Toyota Tacoma, when com-pared to the Colorado, felt “old-school and truckish.” Editorssaid the Colorado drives “like thefuture of small trucks.”Judges also like the Colorado’s

fuel efficiency. Kiino wrote, “Perour own Real MPG testing, wecan confirm that the Coloradodiesel is far and away the mostfuel-efficient midsize truck on themarket.“At 23.2/31.4/26.3 mpg

city/highway/combined, the 4×2Colorado LT Duramax returned

numbers more in line with a 1.5-liter Malibu sedan(20.8/34.3/25.3), topping the tinygas engine’s combined rating by1 full mpg. To get an idea of howa comparable gas truck rates, the4×2 Tacoma SR5 with a 3.5-literV6 touts EPA numbers of19/24/21.“For a gas engine, the Taco’s

numbers are excellent—near thetop of the non-diesel pack, in fact– but in light of the ColoradoDuramax, its scores make it looklike it’s running the Tundra’s 5.7-liter V8.”Judges also like the Colorado’s

advanced design. Kiino wrote,“Sure, it’s a year old, and ayounger Tacoma is on the scene, but the Colorado remains thesegment’s design benchmark. The styling is sporty and hand-some yet understated. It drawsyou in the longer you admire theclean lines, bold front fascia, andtight panel gaps. Then there arethe details. From its deep beddepth, CornerStep rear bumper, and second-row under-seat stor-age to triple-sealed doors andsegment-first aluminum hoodand active aero grill shutters, theColorado was designed to func-tion as well as it looks.“Inside, the story’s much the

same. The mix of materials anddesign presentation are not asfresh or original as those in theTacoma, but the ergonomics andease of use are second to none.”

Livonia-based ZF TRW, the Ac-tive and Passive Safety Technol-ogy Division of ZF AG, has devel-oped a new airbag that is de-signed to help vehicle manufac-turers improve side impact pro-tection.The center airbag is integrated

into the inner side of the seatback and deploys to help protectthe head, shoulder and torso ar-eas of occupants in the frontseat, said ZF TRW spokesmanJohn Wilkerson. The center airbag helps to

protect occupants in ‘far-side’and ‘near-side’ crashes by de-ploying a bag cushion betweenthe driver and front seat passen-ger. In a far-side impact, wherean oncoming vehicle or objectstrikes the opposite side of thevehicle to the driver with suffi-cient force, the center airbaghelps keep the driver in place. It can minimize side displace-

ment of the driver and reducethe risk of interaction of the driv-er with the front seat passengeror surrounding structural vehi-cle interior parts.Dirk Schultz, global engineer-

ing director, ZF TRW InflatableRestraints Systems, said the riskto far-side occupants during sideimpact crashes is significant. Ac-cident research shows that inthe U.S.A., nearly 30 percent ofside impact fatalities involve farside events. The center airbag module is

equipped with a hybrid inflatorand uses one-piece-woven bag orsewn cushion technology, Wilk-erson said. The modules can bedesigned to meet the many dif-ferent OEM vehicle design choic-es, including a tether mechanismwhich promotes a triangularshape upon deployment.

pads that result in a new thresh-old for Buick’s signature Quiet-Tuning.The balance of the efficiency

equation comes from a techno-logically advanced, second-gen-eration 3.6L V6 engine pairedwith a new eight-speed automat-ic transmission. StandardStop/Start technology improvesefficiency in stop-and-go driving.“We’ve blended sophisticated

technologies and advanced safe-ty systems to offer a more enjoyable and engaging driving experi-ence,” said Aldred.“It’s a rewarding sedan for thosewho seek luxurious appoint-ments, style and quality.”The new LaCrosse’s expressive

exterior design creates a newproportion for a more dramaticroad presence, said Wilson. The front wheels have been

pulled forward and the wheel-base stretched 2.7 inches, whilethe overall length is only 0.6-inchlonger. The roofline is 1.6 incheslower than the current model,Wilson said. The longer wheelbase is

matched by wheels pushed out-ward 1.3 inches in the front and1.1 inches in the rear, while thecar’s width has grown only 0.4-inch, creating a wheels-at-corners stance intended to con-vey road confidence.Buick spokesman Nick

Richards said the 2017 LaCrossehas an all-new platform “de-signed from the ground up.”“This is a long-wheel platform,”

Richards said. “No other Buickhas such a platform. It was de-signed at the Tech Center and notin places like Germany or Korea.”The 2017 Buick LaCrosse will

be assembled at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant.

Fall has arrived, and with it,deer collision season. Deer hunt-ing and mating season meansthat motorists need to be extracautious of deer-car collisionsthat increasingly occur aroundthis time of year.Meemic Insurance Company

reminds drivers to remain alertand aware when behind thewheel, as attentive driving canprevent crashes, said Meemic In-surance Company spokespersonPamela Harlin.According to the U.S. National

Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration, Harlin said, there areabout 1.5 million car accidentswith deer each year that result in$1 billion in vehicle damage, about 150 human fatalities, andmore than 10,000 injuries.Harlin said deer are herd ani-

mals, and frequently travel sin-gle file. If you see one whitetail, watch for others as anothermight not be far behind. She also said multiple inde-

pendent studies have found that“deer whistles” are not effective,so even if you have one, stayaware.“And always wear a safety

belt,” Harlin said. “It is your bestdefense against injury in anyroadway crash. Pay attention todeer crossing and speed limitsigns. Deer are creatures of habitand signs are installed at knowndeer crossing areas to alert you.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Theemissions-rigging scandal thathas engulfed German auto giantVolkswagen will not diminishsales of one of its luxury brandsin the United States, the head ofAudi of America predicted Nov.18.In the two months since news

broke that hundreds of thou-sands of diesel cars – mostlyVWs, but also some Audi models– had their emissions devicesdoctored to beat U.S. tailpipetests, sales of Audis have been atrecord levels compared to thesame months in years past, ac-cording to company data.“We’ll have a record Novem-

ber and a record December,”Audi of America President ScottKeogh told reporters at the LosAngeles Auto Show. In 2014, Audisold 36,000 cars in the U.S. in No-vember and December.Keogh added that while sales

were important, fixing cars withemissions test “defeat devices”was a priority. In the past five years, Audi’s

sales in the U.S. have risen 79percent, outpacing the overallmarket, which grew 42 percent, according to Autodata Corp. The brand has benefited from

booming luxury car sales andthe perception that Germanmanufacturers make better andmore prestigious vehicles.Audi sales through October of

this year are up another 13 per-cent from a year ago. Keogh saidfor all 2015, Audi expected U.S.sales to top 200,000 cars sold forthe first time.Recent data show that VW

sales in the U.S., where the scan-dal first broke Sept. 18, were upjust 0.2 percent. At the auto show last week,

Audi also announced that itwanted 25 percent of its U.S.sales to be electric cars –whether gas-electric hybrids orplug-in electric – by 2025. Theautomaker also said it would beinvesting, possibly as a partner,in a nationwide network of fast-charging stations to give ownersof electric cars the confidencethat they will not run out of pow-er on the road.

Nature and industry don’thave to be enemies. Just look atwhat General Motors is doing inSouth Korea.Over the sounds of the assem-

bly plant building the all-new2016 Chevrolet Cruze, employeesat GM’s Gunsan plant can hearcicadae singing from rescuedtrees that first sprouted morethan a century ago, said GMspokeswoman Sharon Basel. The Gunsan plant is GM’s first

manufacturing site in Asia toearn certification from theWildlife Habitat Council for es-tablishing a wildlife habitat oncorporate lands, but it’s just oneof 46 GM sites around the worldthat have been recognized by thenonprofit for biodiversity pro-grams, Basel said.Seven thousand miles east,

General Motor’s Orion Assemblyplant is gearing up to start pro-duction of the Chevrolet Bolt EV,while also establishing an onsitepollinator garden to protect de-clining populations of honeybeesand monarch butterflies, Baselsaid.GM’s Fairfax Assembly plant in

Kansas City, Kan., is not only thehome to the next-generationChevrolet Malibu and all-newMalibu Hybrid, but to the mourn-ing doves and scissortail fly-catchers that take refuge on the2.5 acres of habitat.GM is now halfway toward its

goal of securing wildlife habitatcertifications or equivalent ateach of its manufacturing sitesby 2020.The company now leads all

automakers around the world inWildlife Habitat Council certifica-tions, Basel said.“General Motors’ continued

conservation leadership andcommitment to habitat enhance-

ment sets an example for othercompanies to follow,” said Mar-garet O’Gorman, president,Wildlife Habitat Council.“The global aspect of GM’s par-

ticipation in conservation pro-grams raises awareness of corpo-rate conservation’s impact in en-hancing ecosystems of valuearound the world.”GM’s Gunsan site is the first

program the Wildlife HabitatCouncil has certified in Korea,Basel said. Last year, General Mo-tors became the first company toestablish a certified wildlife habi-tat in China. The company nowmanages nearly 4,700 acres ofwildlife habitat in seven coun-tries.General Motors received seven

new certifications this yearthrough the Wildlife HabitatCouncil’s Wildlife at Work andCorporate Lands for Learningprograms, which recognize out-standing wildlife habitat manage-ment and environmental educa-tion efforts at corporate sites,Basel said.Twelve General Motors facili-

ties around the world alsoearned recertification this year,Basel said, having shown contin-uous growth of their habitatsand environmental educationprograms.“Our global scale gives us an

opportunity to enhance diverseecosystems in the communitieswhere we live and work, fromwetlands and deserts to wood-lands and prairies,” said GregMartin, General Motors execu-tive director for Sustainability.“We work with schools, non-

profits and conservation groupsin our communities to increaseawareness about wildlife andhabitat preservation at the locallevel.”

Fiat Chrysler’s plan to reintro-duce the Fiat vehicle line toNorth America got a boost onNov. 18 at the L.A. Auto Showwhen the company introducedthe new 2017 Fiat 124 Spider. This vehicle revives the

storied nameplate, bringing itsclassic Italian styling and per-formance to a new generation, said Olivier François, head ofFiat Brand, FCA – Global. It pays homage, he said, to the

original 124 Spider nearly 50years after its introduction. The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider deliv-

ers the ultimate Italian roadsterexperience, said Francois, withdriving excitement, technologyand safety combined with iconicItalian design.“There’s no better way to cele-

brate 50 years of the Fiat 124Spider than to bring back thisiconic roadster, pairing its Italianstyling of the past with all of themodern performance and tech-nology of today,” said François.“The 124 Spider expands the

FIAT family, bringing to marketyet another head-turning, fun-to-drive vehicle for our customers.”In North America, the Fiat 124

Spider is available with the 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four-cylinderengine, the engine’s first applica-tion in a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. The engine delivers 160 horse-

power and 184 lb.-ft. of torque,and is available with a six-speedmanual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission.The 124 Spider’s suspension

uses a double-wishbone layout infront and a multi-link in the rear, specifically tuned for greater sta-bility while braking and turning.Steering is light and responsivewith the use of an electric powerassist (dual pinion) system. The steering and suspension

setup, lightweight frame, bal-anced weight distribution andturbocharged engine combine

for a dynamic driving experience,François said.Noise, vibration and harshness

(NVH) enhancements, includingan acoustic front windshield andinsulation treatments, also helpto deliver a refined, quiet ride. For an open-air driving experi-ence, the Fiat 124 Spider’s softconvertible top is easy to oper-ate and requires minimal force, much like the original Spider’stop, François said. The roadster will be available

with an array of safety and secu-rity features, including adaptivefront headlamps, Blind-spot Mon-itoring, Rear Cross Path detec-tion and ParkView rear backupcamera. A high-strength bodyhelps to dissipate energy whileoptimizing occupant protection. The Fiat 124 Spider is also

available with technology fea-tures for added comfort and con-venience, including the FIAT Con-nect 7.0 system with 7-inchtouchscreen display, multimediacontrol, Bluetooth connectivity, heated seats and Keyless Enter ‘nGo, François said.A Bose premium sound system

with nine speakers, includingdual headrest speakers, is alsoavailable for superior soundquality even with the top down. The new Fiat 124 Spider, de-

signed at Centro Stile in Turin,Italy, borrows cues from the orig-inal Spider – widely consideredone of Fiat’s most beautiful carsof all time – and reinterpretsthem for today, François said. The 2017 124 Spider is meant

to have a timeless low-slungpresence, with a classically beau-tiful bodyside, well-balanced pro-portions and a sporty cabin-to-hood ratio, François said.Features like the hexagonal up-

per grille and grille pattern,“power domes” on the fronthood and sharp horizontal rearlamps call to mind details of the

historic Spider, said François. The interior is crafted and de-

signed to focus on the occu-pants, with premium soft-touchmaterials throughout, Françoissaid. Ergonomics were applied toemphasize the driving experi-ence and ensure easy operationof the steering wheel, pedals andshifter while driving. The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider is

available in two trim levels: Clas-sica and Lusso. Each model isavailable in six exterior paint col-ors, including Rosso Passione

(Red Clear Coat), Bianco Gelato(White Clear Coat), Nero Cinema(Jet Black Metallic), Grigio Argen-to (Gray Metallic), Grigio Moda(Dark Gray Metallic) and BronzoMagnetico (Bronze Metallic). TheLusso (“Luxury”) model is alsoavailable in tri-coat Bianco Perla(Crystal White Pearl). To celebrate the return of the

classic nameplate, the first 124vehicles will be offered as a limit-ed-edition Prima Edizione Lusso,as shown at the 2015 Los AngelesAuto Show, François said.

The Fiat 124 Spider was unveiled recently at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Hirschmann Solutions ofAuburn Hills, a provider ofantenna and transceiver sys-tems, presented its portfolio ofautonomous asset tracking solu-tions for intermodal freighttransport at an internationalconference in Hamburg, Ger-many, last week.Hirschmann Solutions’ reps

spoke of asset tracking modulesthat help reduce logistics costsand ensure end-to-end monitor-ing of containers, trucks andtrailers during transportation.“Insufficient security meas-

ures during freight transporta-tion can lead to the collapse ofentire value creation chains in avery short space of time,” saidFrank Homann, president,Hirschmann USA.“Therefore, asset tracking so-
