NoNOx SCR System for IMO NOx Tier III Compliance

NoNOx is HHI-EMD’s own developed SCR (Selective Catalyt-ic Reduction) System to reduce NOx in exhaust gases, especially focus on marine application. Since the first order on June 5, 2012, HHI has received a great number of NoNOx SCR orders, more than 70 sets for offshore application, which need compli-ance of local emission regulation like US-EPA and so forth. And it is also remarkable to adopt NoNOx for engine power stations. One of the applications is 4 sets of NoNOx system for 10 MW emergency power stations in Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Considering influence on new shipbuilding of commercial ves-sels, the market of NoNOx system will grow enormously when compliance of NOx Tier III is mandatory for operation inside of ECA (Emission Control Area). When will it start NOx Tier III? It was supposed to start from 2016, but it may be shifted to 2021 according to IMO (International Maritime Organiza-tion) MEPC (Marine Environment Protection Committee) at its 65th session held in London on May 13-17, 2013. The IMO decision will be voted again in the next MEPC. Regardless of vote result, the United States and Canada adopted national regulations enforcing IMO Tier III equivalent limits within the North American ECA effective 2016. The EU seems to adopt its own NOx limits for ships, which is called by environmental NGOs and aligned to the continuous EU’s movement to protect environment.

HHI-EMD expects the market will adopt IMO NOx Tier III or equivalent limits from 2016. HHI will continuously develop and improve the NoNOx SCR system to provide the best solu-tion to meet NOx Tier III or any other regulation not only for HiMSEN engine but also 2-Stroke diesel engine. Accordingly NoNOx SCR system is to be a value-added product by preoc-cupancy of marine SCR market.

The effective date that should be bindingly forced to install the Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) for ship proposed by International Maritime Organization (IMO) is staring us in the face owing to a problem which the ballast water for keeping ship’s balance disturbs marine ecosystem.

HHI-EMD has received orders for approximately 130 ships to date since HHI-EMD has launched its full-scale BWTS business in the year 2012.

Most of ship owners have a big interest in the BWTS products

approved by US Coast Guard (USCG) because USCG was al-ready forced to take effect it before the effectuation by IMO.

Meanwhile, AMS (Alternate Management System) acceptance by the Coast Guard is a temporary designation given to a BWTS approved by a foreign administration, which is available for up to five years due to taking a while for BWTS Type Approval.

On 24th June, HHI-EMD’s Hi-Ballast that is relatively being well received orders from many of ship owners has acquired AMS Acceptance from USCG, and several ship owners are sending congratulatory messages to us. The following is a part of congratulations received from ship owner, and HHI-EMD will show indefatigable zeal in doing his utmost to satisfy his cus-tomers with its BWTS in future.

On June 1, HHI-EMD announced it completed the shop per-formance test of its first centrifugal gas compressor.

The centrifugal type compressor, more compact and less noisy than other types of compressors, is used in onshore and offshore gas plants to transport high volumes of high pressure natural gas.

Hyundai Heavy has been cooperating with Mit-subishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Compressor Corporation with a technical license partner-ship since 2011. The Japanese company supplies the impeller and rotor while Hyundai Heavy is responsible for manufacturing, testing and com-missioning of the compressor, and supplying other parts.

The new gas compressor is scheduled to be de-livered to KOGAS Masan Compression Station within June, and will come on stream from De-cember this year with a 22 MW class gas turbine driver.

A centrifugal compressor is high performance turbo machinery that uses a high-speed rotating impeller to increase the pressure of the gas, making it easier to transport through pipeline.

This Hyundai Heavy’s gas compressor is capable of delivering 1,100 tons of natural gas per hour by pressurizing it from 4,500 kPa to 6,900 kPa.
