THE NEED FOR OIL MIST DETECTION SYSTEMS
Breakdown of the oil layer between
components or mechanical failure can
lead to a hot spot which leads to a
build up of oil mist in the crank case.
Eventually the oil mist concentration
reaches the lower explosive limit and
a crank case explosion occurs.

• Used on diesel engines - Marine Vessels and Land-based Power
Plants
• Minimises potential risk of crank case explosions.
• Under IACS rules, an Oil Mist Detection system (OMD) is mandatory
for marine diesel engines if:
• Engine output greater than 2,250kW
• Engines above 300 mm bore
• Engine room unmanned

Mk7 OMD RDU FEATURES & BENEFITS
• LCD Touch-Screen Remote Display Unit (RDU) mounted in safe area, typically
the Engine Control Room (ECR).
• Oil mist levels, fault and details of the Mk7 operation are presented on a colour
coded, easy to read, touch screen user interface.
• Offers clear and concise system diagnostics, including the Event Log and
detector head status monitoring.

monitors up to 10 Engines with
max.100 detectors via Modbus based
data communication.
• Modbus based data link allows
connectivity to an external Alarm
Monitoring System ( AMS ).
Mk7 OMD CONTROL UNIT
• Each Control Unit fully manages the OMD functionality for an engine.
• Four voltage free Alarm Relay Outputs per Control Unit :
Pre-Alarm (adjustable 0.5 - 1.2 mg/l, default 0.9 mg/l)
Slowdown/Shutdown Alarm (adjustable 1.3 – 2.4 mg/l, default 1.8 mg/l)
Backup Alarm (hard wired & fixed at 3.0 mg/l)
Fault Alarm
• CANbus communication between Control Unit and Detectors provides greater
immunity to electrical interference (EMC)
• Robust design offers an IP65 rating and protects against severe vibration
• 24V DC operation with full reverse polarity protection.

Mk7 OMD DETECTOR • Installed directly in engine crank or pump space (no external air supply or pipe
work required) – allowing faster, more accurate oil mist detection.
• Intelligent, IP65 rated, Auto-addressing Detector.
• Two sample pipe lengths, standard for 2 stroke and shorter for 4 stroke/confined
space installations.
• Pre-terminated Detector cables offer simple plug-in connection.
• Coloured LEDs provide easy to understand local status.
• Independent operation avoids single point of failure.
• Uses robust, bi-directional CANbus protocol to protect against EMC interference.
• Automatic self test cycle checks functionality.
• Push-fit Smoke Test port to check detector operation.
