Junior Gardener Program from Stephanie Anfinson

News about the junior gardening program will resume in October. Please read the letters from Marblehead School dated June 12, 2014, and from Concordia School dated June 24, 2014, which are included pages 5 and 6 of the newsletter. Be sure to check the after-school garden club schedules in the yearbook and on the calendar of this newsletter and join these young gardeners.

Scholarship Program from Cindy Burns

This year the San Clemente Garden Club awarded $1,000 scholarships to (11) college students. These scholarships were awarded for outstanding San Clemente High School seniors and current college students majoring in or planning a career related to botany or horticulture; landscape planning or design; plant, wildlife, or marine sciences; environmental science and concerns such as conservation, biology, ecology, and sustainability of natural resources. We recognized students who stood out in their communities for their achievements, determination, and demonstrated desire to help others through volunteerism.

Three of the recipients are designated ‘Edison Scholars’ through our program. Edison International funded an additional $3,000 in scholarships through a grant to the club. Otherwise, our scholarship program is made possible through the generous support from our annual garden club tour sponsors and ticket sales.

Plant Sale Gifts from Teresa Whitney

How is the San Clemente Garden Club benefitting from the ongoing construction of the Ortega Highway interchange? Joanne Pollard, owner of the McDonalds restaurant located on Del Obispo just off of I-5 and Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano, called the club. She said she was going to take advantage of the temporary street closure and remodel her restaurant and offered SCGC any of the plants on the property.

Free plants for our Fall Plant Sale? All we had to do was dig them up and transport them? It didn’t take long before a crew was put together and we hauled off everything that we could. Thank you to Launa Gould (who got the call), Teresa Whitney, Diane Riopka (Ways and Means) Eunice and Bill Schafer, and Jim Proett (our musclemen), but most of all to Joanne Pollard for her generosity.

Civic Beautification Volunteers from Carol Luetz

Park Semper Fi Diane, Jim, and Bill with former city mayor Wayne Eggleston pose for Launa at Park Semper Fi. Wayne was instrumental in developing the park. Join us on the second Tuesday of each month and tend the garden with a beautiful view of the ocean.

Roses at 15th Hole The beautiful roses at the city golf course are lovingly maintained by garden club members. Be part of this great group just once a month.

Sister City Bowls The city asked the club to care for the sister city bowls located in front of the community center on Del Mar. We need a dedicated volunteer to water and maintain them a few times a month. It is easy and fun!

“Forgotten”

Red tipped Finches circle the waning bird bath

take a vital sip of the steamy brew and fly away

The owner is too hot and barely dressed for outdoor chores

or refreshing the dark puddle. These are known as the dog days of summer,

But thirsty Finches will remember their tiny pond as

Foulger’s Forgotten

Fulfillment.

Gardening Hints from Susan PIerce

Did you know that the white salty rings on your clay pots can be cleaned by wiping with a cloth that has been soaked in full-strength white or apple cider vinegar? It may take a little extra scrubbing with a stiff brush to get the deposit off. When finished, just rinse.

Lemon juice sprinkled over the top of gardenias will help prevent the petals from browning.

Household items that extend the life of your cut flowers included crushed aspirin, 7-Up or any clear soda water.

A shot of vodka or gin can help a vase of tulips live longer.

Banana peels add potassium to the soil and act as an organic fertilizer, helping plants grow flowers and fruit.

Eggshells will add calcium and nitrogen to potted plants, around fruit trees and throughout vegetable gardens.

Coffee grinds will add nitrogen and minerals to your plants. The calcium, copper and potassium found in caffeine products will enrich alkaline soil.

Junior Gardener Program

June 12, 2014 Marblehead School 2410 Via Turqueza San Clemente, CA 92673

Dear San Clemente Garden Club, The 500 families of Marblehead

School would like to thank you for another great year in our Outdoor Classroom in the Kokua Garden. We so appreciate the support you give us, through money and members.

Our after school program is such an important part of keeping our garden maintained. With the help of SCGC members Doris Weinbaum, Judith Clemens, Jeanette Fromm, and Simone Costas, the children and families of our After School Kokua Club were enriched. Doris came monthly to help assist in whatever was needed, from transplanting strawberries for the Plant Sale to helping children cut up veggies for a yummy salad. Judith Clemens, a Marblehead Grandmother, helped her Grandson and all of us learn to trim properly, plant, and make lavender bouquets. Jeanette Fromm helped us weed and enrich a new bed and then assist children in planting a Three Sisters Garden. Simone Costas came with her pet turtles and showed the children how the turtles could help them rid their garden of grubs naturally.

With your monetary support, we were able to purchase seeds, perennial and vegetable plants, new garden tools of watering cans, hoses and clippers, and project supplies. This year we did a few less crafts and got the children more involved in trimming, weeding, mulching, and gardening itself.

We even learned how to compost after we purchased a composter at Plant Fest! The children loved planting, harvesting, preparing …and especially eating from the garden. Weloved stir-fry on the campstove, salad, and lavender treats!

Yesterday, thirteen families signed up to each volunteer a week of care and harvest in the garden over the summer vacation. We are so lucky to have this experience!

Thank you again for your interest and support in our school garden and our Jr. Gardener’s Program. We look forward to next year!

Dana Hurlbut, Marblehead School Teacher Ali Brunson, Marblehead School Parent Faith Morris, Marblehead School Principal

Junior Gardener Program

June 24, 2014 Concordia Elementary School

Dear San Clemente Garden Club,

On behalf of all the students, teachers, garden club members and parent volunteers, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for your support during our 2013-2014 school year. Because of the generous grant donations that you have given our school gardens we have been able to enjoy the bounty of our hard work in our gardens. We purchased new garden tools, a greenhouse, soil, worm composting kits, milkweed (monthly), seeds, snacks for our hard working gardeners, butterfly kits and habitats.

This was my first year at the PTA Garden Chair and I really wanted to transform the gardens back to the original vision and creation that Kris Ethington and the SCGC had created. First we began by bringing truckloads of soil from Sierra Soil and refilling our garden beds with nutrient rich soil. Each month we would meet on the 3rd Monday after school for our Concordia after school garden club. We averaged around 12 students and their parents and 2-3 San Clemente Garden Club volunteers per month. In the fall we had the 1st graders come into the garden and plant winter veggies in the kinder/1st grade garden. We had some issues with animals coming and nibbling on our plants so we installed some deer netting to solve the problem. In winter we then all enjoyed delicious salads from all our hard work and some of the kids had never eaten, kale, radishes, chard and beets so it was great to introduce them to new vegetables. The kinder students came into the garden in spring and planted lots of snap peas, English peas, green beans, carrots, and lettuce and tomatoes and cucumbers. We were busy tending to these gardens and we had an eagle scout come and install new fencing around the perimeter of the kinder garden to protect from the little creatures. Each 2nd grade class went into their 2nd grade garden and planted flower beds for each class.

Each of the flowers was selected for attracting butterflies, bees and moths. We taught them the importance of attracting pollinators into our flower gardens and once again our prime pollinator the Monarch butterfly which we continued to plant milkweed throughout our school as we are a monarch way station and this spring early summer the Monarchs are everywhere around our school!

The 2nd graders also painted rocks with their teachers’ names to identify their special garden beds. The 4th graders learned about worm composting and we purchased worm bins to keep in their classrooms and the children would bring in scraps to feed to their class pets. Diane Cheek, the worm lady, provided an amazing informational lesson to the 4th graders and got them to get their hands dirty with the worms. The 3rd graders got into their California Native Garden and planted some lupine seeds, learned about uses of the established plants in their garden by the Native Americans, and finally planted the 3 sisters in one of the beds.

Next year we would like to redo our rain barrels by repainting, reattaching the barrels to the rain gutters and including a lesson to the 5th graders on rainwater harvesting importance. We hope to gain more interest in parent volunteering of watering and hopefully participating in the garden club plant sale with a Jr. Gardeners booth. Thank you again SCGC for all your financial support, knowledge and physical labor support without you our Concordia School gardens would not be what they are today!!!

Thank you, Heather Rice PTA Garden Chair Michelle Johnson PTA Garden Co-chair

Fall Plant Sale Plants and Volunteers Needed

from Diane Riopka & Teresa Whitney Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 11, for the annual fall plant sale. If you missed the propagation workshop in late August, you can help in making the plant sale a success by contributing plants you have propagated or divided. Also, at the September and October meetings, we will be taking sign-ups for volunteers for the plant sale set-up day (Friday, October 10) and the plant sale (Saturday, October 11). Both days are a great way to become better acquainted with fellow garden club members. We always have a great time and snacks are provided. Call or email Diane or Teresa, if you have questions or need plants picked up. Check your yearbook for email addresses and phone numbers.

Garden Therapy from Suzi Klickstein

I know many of our Garden Therapy volunteers are looking forward to our monthly visits to the RIO Adult Day Care Center as much as I am. On the third Wednesday of the month at 12:30pm for the next eight months, volunteers bring a garden or nature related craft to the wonderful clients at the RIO. From 12:30 to 1:15pm we ready the craft materials for 65 eager folks who participate. Next we pass out the materials and spend about an hour assisting the clients in creating crafts that they happily take home to display. The RIO clients never fail to give the SCGC volunteers a hero’s welcome each time we arrive. The child-like delight they take in each project and the appreciation they express is priceless, and yet it only costs us a couple hours of our time. What a bargain! In a nod to the start of the fall season, our September Garden Therapy project will find Garden Club volunteers guiding the exuberant RIO clients in fashioning a perky, colorful three-dimensional sunflower. If you would like to join in the fun, please contact Suzi Klickstein at [email protected]. Hope to see you at the RIO.

Garden Tour from Cindy Burns

The 2014 Garden Tour was held on May 31 and well attended by many local residents but also guests as far away as Texas. The five gardens on the tour were beautiful and each had something different to offer the visitors. An add bonus this year was tastings in each garden provided by Carbonara Trattoria, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Ricardo’s Place, Rocco’s Restaurant and Trader Joe’s. San Clemente Garden Club would like to thank all of our Sponsors, Vendors and ticket buyers for making this a successful tour. The funds raised will be put back into the community through scholarships and many projects we support.
