A letter from your editor...

Happy!Happy!

I could not resist sharing this photo with you all! We’re working on our announcements which will goout to our Christmas card list mostly...but I wantedyou to share in what was the happiest time of my life.

We were married after being Handfasted for twoyears almost to the day. Tom and I have consideredourselves a committed couple for longer than that -and we have been friends for many years before that. So, after all that time, I was not prepared for theoverwhelming emotions that just swept over both ofus during the ceremony. Both of us had husky voicesand shining eyes.

We had the best idea! Just before the ceremony,Tom found someone with a speaker phone and calledhis mother. Mom is ninety-four and can’t travel be-cause of her health. She had no idea that she would getto hear the wedding. It was adorable, too, as she wouldhave comments on the proceedings every once in awhile.Everyone heard her say, “Oh, I hear Beth laughing!”She said, “That’s my sweet son getting married!” And,we could all hear her telling someone, “I’m so happy hefound our Beth!”

Billy Wallace from Westminster, SC made our cakes. The cake for the ceremony was gorgeous - I’ll include apicture of it. It was iced with lavender fondant and wasgraced with a handmade sugar orchid as delicate andfragile-looking as any real one...and with tiny little flowersand leaves - all edible and handmade by Billy.

Our friend, Jeri Martin, who officiated at boththe Handfasting and the wedding, gifted Tom with anabsolutely delicious chocolate Groom’s cake.

Billy made our cake for the Kingdome of RaknarRaid the following Sunday night following the GlasgowHighland Games in Lucas, Kentucky. We carried thecake in the car from Walhalla to Lebanon, Tennesseeand then on to Glasgow, Kentucky without one singlething going wrong! It was not your usual wedding cake.

It was made in the form of a Viking helmet - with “blood”in it. (Really cherry sauce that was delicious!) I’ll hookon a photo of the Viking helmet cake too...My dearfriend and “twin brother” Jim Walters of the CaledonianKitchen carried the cake around and around and aroundand around the Raid for all to see - piped in by goodfriend Jim Pennington from Chattanooga.

Billy Wallace is a master cake maker! He is alsoa trained chef who is opening his own restaurant -Oconee Bells - in Westminster, SC. Thank you, Billy, for making our cakes magical.

A plug for Billy: If you need a wonderful, specialcake, get in touch with me and I’ll get you in touchwith Billy. (Yes, he can ship cakes safely!) By theway, Billy Wallace is a fine Scottish athlete who com-petes in Highland Games all around the Southeast. Heand his wife, Christine, are brand new parents of theirsixth baby, Zoie.

A huge thank you goes to Jeri’s daughtersDrysdale Martin Wheaton and Susan Partyka whodecorated the garden and patio with all the lovely whitetulle and white flowers and made everything wonder-

ful and festive. Jeri’s granddaughter, Becky Wheaton, mowed the yard and helped everyone with everything.

Our long-time friend, Rob Piland of R.E. PilandGoldsmiths hand made our rings - horseshoe nails ofwhite gold with a blue diamond for me and a blackdiamond for Tom. A long time ago, Rob also made thesetting for my diamond on my middle finger.

Our rings remember Tom’s father who was areal horseman - as is Tom. You all know I am really acowboy! We love the rings!

After our huge Handfasting in 2007, we thought ourwedding would be very simple. There was no guest list. There was nothing fancy...but Jeri, Drysdale, Susan, Becky,

Rob Piland and Billy Wallace made it the most specialday of our lives.

A special thank you to my many-years friend,Jeri Martin who opened her home, her heart and hergarden to us. Jeri officiated at our Handfasting and itwas our great priviledge for her to officiate at our wed-ding too. Thank you, dear Jeri.

Our wedding was special because it was madeby our friends..

My publications have always been written withthe thought in my mind that the folks who read it aregood friends...so, it is just natural that we would sharethis joyous time with you.

Our wedding cakes were not very“usual.” On the left you’ll see JimWalters (of The Caledonian Kitchen)showing the Viking Helmet cake(created by Billy Wallace ofWestminster, SC and all edible) toone and all at the Kingdome ofRaknar “Raid” on the Sunday nightfollowing our wedding. Rob Piland made our white goldhorseshoe nails rings. Years ago, healso did the setting f or my diamondwhich was given to me when I wasborn.

Billy Wallace also made this lovely fondant coveredwedding cake for our Thursday night ceremony inLebanon, TN. The orchid and all those tiny flowersand leaves were all made by Billy and were edible (They were eaten, except for the orchid which wesaved!) Contact Beth if you would like to have Billy Wallace make a special cake for you!

Mavis Turnbull Lockwood is still up to her oldtricks. Mavis, an avid horsewoman, has just completedher third time of participating in Riley’s Ride, a reen-actment of Jack Riley’s last trip (The Man FromSnowy River). The ride is a several day journey (120km) on horseback that includes meter wide paths and100 meter drop offs. There are steep climbs and de-scents to reach the 6000 ft peak, as well as a rivercrossing. After completing the ride, Mavis said “Thescenery is beautiful, but hard on the horses.” But evi-dently not too hard on 82 year old Mavis! She’s al-ready signed up for next year’s ride.

Mavis is a pioneer in Australian horse racing. Shestarted riding when she was just 4 years old. Her fa-ther made her ride bareback and when she could dothat he gave her a saddle with no stirrups. When sheproved herself on the saddle, he added the stirrups.

History making is old hat for Mavis and includesbeing the first woman trainer to first woman rider. Itseems in one Oakbank race her jockey didn’t showup, so she rode the horse herself. The old days alsoincluded entertaining the crowds which led to jumpinga horse over a motor vehicle. She has kept almostevery trophy won and has an extensive trophy andmemorabilia room.

Today, Mavis lives with her son, Robert, in Mil-Lel, near Mount Gambier, South Australia. They liveon a farm that has been in her family for over 100years. She continues to train and take care of 14horses.

Despite cancer in 2008, Mavis hasn’t given up.She fast tracked her recovery so she could competeat her local Mil-Lel show, which celebrated 70 years.Mavis has ridden in 69 of the 70 years. She missed ayear because she was giving birth to her son.

Mavis has no intention of stopping riding. Shesays she told her pony, “Mum lived to 105...sure is I’llbe riding you when I’m 100.”

And if three days on horseback wasn’t enough,

A lady after myown heart! MavisTurnbull Lockwood!

Mavis ended Riley’s Ride by riding the bucking me-chanical bull at The Man from Snowy River Festival(Corryong, Australia). The usual fee for riding the bull

RG Hardie & Co. 45 Grovepark Street Maryhill Glasgow G20 7NZ

A Piper has long since held a position of signifi-cant honour within a Scottish family or Regiment, sohonouring the game’s piper was seen as entirely ap-propriate. Also, the Chief of the games this year wasnone other then the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Glasgow, and R. G. Hardie are based in Glasgow.

A beautiful custom made set of pipes was cre-ated, all by hand, including Blackwood with imitationivory & nickel slides & caps, African Blackwood solochanter, Flexistick blowstick, Sheepskin bag and Canereeds. A set of pipes that any piper would be proud of.Next, a special presentation was organized to take placeduring the opening ceremonies where The Earl ofGlasgow, who was delighted to make the presentation, would call Mr Williams from the field to receive his gift.

The day of the games could not have been bet-ter. The temperature was a lovely 83 degrees, far bet-

ter than previous years which saw temperatures soarto 100+. Opening ceremonies began with the tradi-tional procession of various dignitaries across the fieldto the reviewing stand. The National anthems of Scot-land, Canada and the United States were sung fol-lowed by The Earl of Glasgow addressing the publicand officially opening the games.

Next, and directly after Lord Glasgow’s address,a startled Mr Williams was summoned by the MC tothe reviewing stand. An explanation of the gift wasthen made by Romilly Squire of Rubislaw to the crowdfollowed by the presentation of the pipes by LordGlasgow. Mr Williams, despite being overwhelmed bythe gift, proceeded to play a verse of “Scotland theBrave” on the new pipes, much to the delight of thecrowd.

Angus Crabbie appointed to BritishCouncil’s Challenge Europe Team

Angus Crabbie, Director of the Trees4Scotlandproject, has been appointed onto the British Council’sChallenge Europe Team to represent Scotland.

In 2008, the British Council launched the Euro-pean element of its global climate programme; Chal-lenge Europe. The Challenge Europe project is a three-year project that aspires to make a definite and lastingimpact on the climate change debate and is amtitiousin its aim to accelerate change to a low carbon future. This summer, they are starting the second year of theproject with activity in 15 countries across Europe.

In each of the participating countries they select15 young people from all walks of life to become “Cli-mate Advocates.”. In exchange for the chance to par-ticipate in the project, Climate Advocates are askedto commit approximately 150 hours of their time. Overthe period of one year, each country team will workcollaboratively to identify key areas where they thinkthey can make a real difference and to develop threeconcrete ideas to reduce carbon use through changesin policy, business or human behaviour.

The groups will then pitch their ideas to broaderpublics, specifically reaching out to decision-makersand organizations, campaigning for implementation andsupport in an effort to make the ideas become reality.

Throughout the programme, The British Council actively partner with a number of organizations acrossEurope spanning all sectors; including the corporate, non-governmental, environmental and academic worlds.Through these partnerships, they will support Angus and the other Climate Advocates in their quest, offeringthem access to some of the best minds in Europe through established networks of expert environmental groupsand centres of excellence.

The philosophy of the campaign is simple: to create momentum through collaboration, innovation, energy, drive, passion, understanding and knowledge-sharing.

Well done, Angus, and good luck! For further information, please click http://www.challengeeurope.britishcouncil.org

St. Albans Records useful in Canadian genealogy

Anyone tracing ancestors who may have enteredthe United States through Canada should take the timeto become familiar with the St. Albans records.

Unfortunately, prior to January 1895,no official documenta-tion exists for peoplewho came across theUnited States/Canadianborder. If you are search-ing for someone whocame prior to January1895, many professionalsrecommend checkingchurch records, vitalrecords, land/tax records, occupational licenses, andother types of civilrecords, and passengerlists generated at ports of entry in the Canadian Mari-time Provinces of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia,New Brunswick, and Quebec.

Some other possible areas that may generatesuccess are cities such as Boston, Portland (Maine),and various Pacific ports that had consistent trafficand commerce with Canada. One may find clues thatcould allow the researcher to make some educatedguesses or lead to additional records.

St. Albans border crossing records are lists ofimmigrants who crossed the border from Canada tothe United States between 1895 through 1954. Thetitle can be misleading in terms of the geographicalscope of information. Some beginners assume that therecords only contain information for the immediate areasurrounding St. Albans, Vermont. In reality, they con-tain records of immigrants crossing over from Canadato the United States in all states located along the bor-der with Canada from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans. This encompasses the states of Washington, Idaho,Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio,Michigan, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Maine.

St. Albans records contain much of the same in-formation as would be found on ship passenger lists. Some are actual passenger lists. However, St Albans

records contain more spe-cific information and detailspertaining to individuals thanwould be found in standardpassenger lists. Our com-panion study guides Cana-dian Research and Immi-gration Across theUnited States/CanadianBorder provide more de-tailed information on thissubject in terms of specificquestions and procedures.

As of January 1, 1895,United States border inspec-tors stationed along the vari-

ous entry points along the Canadian border required thatthose entering Canada through sea ports obtain a Certifi-cate of Admission, after passing a health inspection andquarantine. Railroads required a Certificate of Admis-sion if the passenger arrived in Canada within the previ-ous 30 days. At land border “ports”, inspectors preparedthe List (or) Manifest of Alien Passengers Applyingfor Admission to the United States from Foreign Con-tiguous Territory form, which is also called the Form 1-Canada.

This list refers to two sets of people:1. Immigrants who may have lived in Canada for

months/years prior to entering the U.S., and who camefrom a nation other than Canada, up to October 1, 1906

2. After October 1, 1906 the list then refers to thesecond set, which included Canadians in addition tothose from another nation.

I’m interested in a Royal Navy surgeohn of theearly 1800s named JAMES FORRESTER. Hebecame a ships surgeon in 1813 and diedaboard Amphitrite when she ran aground ofBoulogne in 1833. If anyone knows anything, please write Andrew C.A. Jampoler,Outremer Farm, 43351 Spinks Ferry Road,Leesburg, VA 20176 USA.

Some of the superstitions and traditions regard-ing quilts make amusing reading today. However, it’sbest not to take any chances and follow these cus-toms anyway!

1. Unmarried boys and girls gathered around abridal quilt and tossed a cat on it. The person closestto where the cat landed would be the next married.

2. If a girl has not made a quilt by the time she is21, no man will want to marry her.

3. Using the marriage symbols of hearts, cupids, dovesor love knots on a quilt before the girl was officially engaged

If you are aquilter, youneed to knowthese things!

was to court spinsterhood or a broken engagement.4. A vine or cable appliqued or quilted along the

border of a bride’s quilt must not be broken, becausea break in the design foretold a marriage marred bytragedy or a life cut short by disaster.

Our thanks to Rootdigger, a publication ofthe Marion County Genealogical Society, POBox 1206 , Oca la , FL 34478-1206 .

Can anyone help Mr. Jampoler?

The Story of theLamont Harp

The original instrument of Highland music wasn’tthe pipes but the harp or clarsach, which is known tohave existed in almost prehistoric times. One of theearliest surviving examples is the famous clarsachLaomannach. Brought to the Robertson’s of Lude inPerthshire by a Lamont bride from Cowal in 1460.

The extreme length of the Lamont harp is 38inches and the extreme width from front to back is 18½ inches. The box which is hollowed out of one pieceof wood is 30 inches long by 4 inches wide at top and17 inches at the bottom, the depth of the side through-out is 4 inches wide with a swell of the front from sidesand ends to the center of 1 inch under the projectingband through which the32 string holes are pierced. The string holes each have an ornamental mounting ofbrass of peculiar form, all of the same pattern, exceptthe 3 upper and 2 lower holes, which are of the horse-shoe shaped, terminating in quatrefoils.

There are 4 sound holes of 1 1/3 inches in diam-eter in front and the original back is gone, having beenreplaced by a new one.

It’s currently housed in the National Museum ofAntiquities in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Lamont Harp

Making a positive footprint – a“green” message from Scotland!

Scots of the world will be uniting in HolyroodPark, Edinburgh on the weekend of 24th July 2009.Those of us living in Scotland are looking forward tothe event as much as anyone and to opening our armsto the world.

Scotland rarely gets an opportunity like this tocelebrate all things Scottish and we are delighted thatthis is happening in the special year of homecoming. There are expected to be 40,000 people congregat-ing in Holyrood Park coming from all part of the world. What a site it will be!

Anything good always comes at a price, however, and in this case it is the carbon footprint created by all theadditional travel to Scotland. Help is at hand howeverand The Gathering 2009 has teamed up withTrees4Scotland to provide an opportunity for visitors to

plant trees in Teaghlach Wood (meaning family or clan)both as a means to offset their impact of the environmentand also to leave a legacy of the year of homecoming thatcan be enjoyed by many generations to come.

To put things in perspective a visitor flying fromNew York to Edinburgh return would need to planttwo trees to offset the associated carbon footprint. Ifevery visitor to Scotland took the positive step of evenplanting one tree then the country would be far betteroff for it.

Many of you have already planted trees inTeaghlach Wood and now have your names proudlydisplayed on the honours board – whether you arecoming to Scotland this year or not. We sincerely

A new PoetLaureate in GreatBritain - and she’sa Scot!

In 1668 Charles II appointed John Dryden to bethe first Poet Laureate. Since then a long list of verynotable poets have held the position. On Friday the2nd of May the appointment of a new Laureate wasmade public.

The new peoples poet is Carol Ann Duffy, thefirst Scot, the first woman and mother to hold the post.Born in the Gorbals District of Glasgow she comesfrom working class stock. The family moved to En-gland when she was five.

“ At 53, Duffy is indisputably one of the finestpoets of her generation, dubbed by some as a ‘super-star.’ Her poems are taught in schools, her books sellwell and she is sought after for readings and festivals. She has an OBE and is professor of contemporarypoetry at Manchester University, “ it was said on herappointment.

Carol Ann has made it clear she will not be sim-ply writing Royal poetry. She said that poetry is allabout looking at the ordinary and transforming it. Ihave sent a letter of congratulation via the secretary ofthe Clan Macfie Society, who happens to be a Duffy.
