Having had a long-standing association with shop-sa, SSC would like to take this opportunity to wish the magazine continued success under its new title.

Since the following pages cover a number of world leading brands distributed and marketed by SSC, I’d like to highlight some of the events that have seen us step out of the box in 2012. Our growing sponsorships with sporting personalities have been particularly rewarding.

Since cricket is now South Africa’s second most popular sport, we decided that Croxley, which has been synonymous with fine stationery products for over a century, should sponsor another century-maker – Jacques Rudolph, the Protea’s stylish left-hander who has been acquitting himself with aplomb since returning to the side this season. The famous Croxley name on Jacques Rudolph’s flashing bat will further cement Croxley’s association with style and quality throughout the sponsorship.

With rugby still being the country’s pride and passion – as popular as STABILO Boss highlighters have been for the past 40 years – an inspired decision saw STABILO sponsor the MTN Lions cheerleaders, the ‘FeLions’, for the 2012 Vodacom Rugby Super 15 and Curry Cup. While STABILO itself has been around since 1875, the highlighters are still considered one of the company’s most brilliant products and the nine dazzling fluorescent colours certainly match the FeLions youthful energy. The corporate colours of red and white demonstrate the perfect synergy between STABILO and the MTN Lions.

SSC’s portfolio has also expanded to include some particularly exciting new brands, including the trendy and innovative Leitz range of products which we launched at a spectacular event in July this year. A couple of other exciting launches are planned for later in the year. Watch this space!

I believe that SSC will reach new heights and achievements and together with our valued clients, employees and partners we aim to realise the potential that exists in all of us, and in SSC.

There are many challenges before us but these challenges lead us to innovative changes and we have seen many of these come to fruition. At SSC over the past year, we have witnessed our infrastructure, warehouse management systems, marketing, distribution and even our offices undergo drastic transformations, not to mention our new corporate identity, including our new logo and pay-off line. These have been challenges but we’ve turned them into great opportunities for SSC.

We at SSC are passionate about the boundless opportunities that exist within our industry and even more so, about the value these opportunities can add to you our customers in partnership with SSC.

A warm welcome from SSC managing director, Trevor Girnun

As the managing director of Silveray Statmark Company (SSC), I must say how honoured we feel to be the first company accorded the privilege of addressing My Office readers through the extensive number of pages afforded to SSC in this issue. It is a wonderful opportunity to give our industry a more in-depth understanding of who we are, what we do, how we continually endeavour to add value to our customers and what we plan for the future.

It all started 25 years ago and over the years SSC has built steadily on its reputation for top-of-the-range stationery which include a portfolio of over 6 000 products, catering for the needs of many diverse industries. Our portfolio, for which we have exclusive distribution rights, now boasts all these famous global brands: Croxley, Dahle, Durable, Dymo, Esselte, Helix, Herma, Jovi, Leeho, Leitz, Lion Brand, Maped, Mighty Minds, Oxford, PaperMate, Parker, Pendaflex, Penguin, Pharos, Rapid, Rolodex, Rotring, Sellotape, Sharpie, STABILO, Twinlock, UHU

and Waterman.

The connection with the 119-year-old Croxley brand is particularly rewarding. The leading name for the best quality of paper and stationery products, Croxley was originally produced in the United Kingdom but is now manufactured locally to add greater value to our South African market – and ultimately beyond our borders.

SSC has built a proud reputation and acknowledges a team of dedicated staff who help the company maintain its commitment to deliver on promises, provide exclusive brands and remain customer focused. This unswerving dedication is undoubtedly the reason the brands associated with SSC constantly dominate

Silveray Statmark Company (SSC) distribute stationery products that are certainly known in almost every household and are highly respected and valued.

the country’s classrooms and boardrooms, are to be found in most homes and are highly sought after for corporate gifting.

SSC acknowledges that the long-standing and supportive relationships with international and local suppliers and customers have been integral to the company’s development over the last quarter century, and they will continue to form an important part of SSC’s plans for the future.

SSC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Bidvest Group Limited and part of the Bidvest Paperplus Division. SSC has a national sales and distribution network supported by branches in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Pretoria and Bloemfontein. The company’s established and sustainable growth

continues to supply all-important job opportunities for the country. Over the past two years SSC has developed and implemented various far-reaching strategies, including a dynamic new corporate identity (CI), with a younger, funky and more interesting logo setting the scene. The inversion of the second ‘s’ in SSC subtly creates a heart, which reflects the new payoff ‘Love Stationery’ – a concept that is carried through all branding and marketing elements. While the whole effect is sleek and modern, there is an underlying warmth and friendliness suggesting that SSC loves everything about stationery.

In-line with the new CI, the company’s head offices have recently received a facelift to the exterior of their premises and the interiors are undergoing a total revamp. A fresh coat of paint, various front entrance additions and internal office layout re-structuring create a more professional, vibrant and welcoming look.

Of course one of the most vital marketing tools of a company such as the SSC is the essential sales catalogue. The company has expanded to such an extent that it now handles over 6 000 products. A new approach was therefore imperative. A new, innovative format for these brand catalogues was designed, providing each international brand with its own platform, yet also cross-references products into categories, making it really easy to navigate.

The appearance is extremely stylish, with each brand in the SSC portfolio presented in its own saddle-stitched booklet, with its own brand identity. Booklets are filed in a specialised and alphabetic index. This novel and efficient format facilitates a quick and easy catalogue update should any brand need a product or CI change, or new products are added or removed.

In step with current trends, the SSC website has received a refreshed, fun and vibrant look and feel – www.silveray.co.za and now also includes an online catalogue. There is also a product listing so customers can search for products by brand or category.

The Facebook page – www.facebook.com/silveray.statmark – is excitingly interactive with games and competitions. SSC’s Facebook page is becoming a fun spot that does not only provide customers with a resource that is regularly updated, but also allows anyone to simply express their love for stationery and win some rather cool prizes. We invite you to visit the new Facebook page –click ‘LIKE’ – and share the love for simplicity, stationery elegance and of course colour that Silveray Statmark Company has to offer. m

STABILO BOSS HIGHLIGHTERSSTABILO, which stunned the stationery market over

40 years ago when the company launched the first Boss fluorescent highlighters, continues to stay at the helm of innovation. Over the last few years, to meet the challenge of trying to save the planet, the company applied the collective creativity of its movers and shakers to find ways of improving its individual products to remove or lessen any negative impact they might have on the environment.

By the end of 2010 STABILO had achieved some significant goals in the production of Boss highlighters, including a major move to ecological efficiency while delivering 100% quality. Take a look at these achievements:

• ISO 14000 and ISO 9001 for all STABILO factories• 100% recycling of all black parts and inner barrel• A 275-ton saving of virgin material • Reduced waste thanks to extremely extended lifetime

In the production of Boss fluorescent highlighters, 100% renewable energy is used. Each highlighter now lasts longer than ever, giving a 375 m writing length. They have up to four hours cap off time.

PAPERMATE Joining the green crusade, PaperMate has made giant

strides by introducing the new PaperMate Biodegradable range of writing instruments to the range. This includes ball pens, gel pens and mechanical pencils.

The development of these green products is a direct response to consumers’ request for writing instruments that are environmentally friendly. The refillable pen is made from 65% biodegradable material – nose cone, clip housing and barrel. Just the ink refill and grip need to be removed.

All PaperMate Biodegradable products are also made from renewable vegetal materials which are able to disintegrate in moist soil or your compost, within about a year.

Environmentally friendly Packaging is 100% recyc-lable. m

After three years of studying to earn his IMM marketing diploma, he was conscripted into the army where, for a year, he was in one of the toughest of all military jobs, that of paratrooper. This tempered him, mentally and physically, subconsciously preparing him for the challenges that lay ahead.

Astonishingly, in his 21 years at the coalface, so to speak, Girnun has been employed by only two companies, both owned by Bidvest.

His first position was with Buffalo Tapes where he spent 19 years. Starting as a warehouse packer, his obvious acumen soon saw him promoted and moving through the ranks.

When Buffalo Tapes merged with Executape to become Buffalo

Executape, Trevor Girnun was appointed as managing director. He stayed there for 10 years.

For the last two years he filled the role of managing director at SSC and has certainly made his mark in that short time. Girnun’s constant drive is obvious in the renewed focus targeted at the brands under the SSC umbrella, the adventurous new marketing strategies being employed and the dynamic new corporate identity that now showcases the company. His vibrant, positive outlook manifests itself in every area of the business.

Away from the office, Girnun is very much the family man, spending as much time as possible with his wife and three sons, with whom he bonds regularly in time-out trips to the bush, especially the Kruger National Park. He’s also a keen sports lover and, when younger, represented South Africa playing rugby at the Maccabi Games. Widely travelled, he has been to most parts of the world, and has fond memories of visiting the UK, France, Germany, Brazil, Israel and Dubai. m

WHO IS TREVOR GIRNUN?Trevor Girnun, managing director of Silveray Statmark Company (SSC)for the past two years, is a man who thrives on challenges, endorses positive change and is solution driven.

George Safford Parker founded his company in 1888 with the philosophy “Make something better and people will buy it”. And so he did. Throughout the world, the name Parker stands above all as an icon for superbly crafted pens - pens that write well, feel great in the hand and last a lifetime. Parker pens are ideal for both everyday use and for those special occasions. They are also the perfect writing instrument for men and women, from young to the old.

Only the finest materials are used and the highly engineered manufacturing processes embody sheer craftsmanship. This combination ensures maximum performance from all Parker pens, inks and refills.

Before being released for sale, Parker writing instruments must first pass a series of exacting quality assurance tests devised to assess the writing performance, durability and functional features of each product.

For the promotional and incentive market, our commitment to excellence extends into the business-to-business world. A Parker is a special gift – which makes it the ideal way to let customers or employees know just how much they are appreciated. A pen says it all because, it is a lasting symbol of that particular moment.

A TRIBUTE TO MODERN WOMAN Parker has recently introduced a feminine ‘twist’ to the Parker Sonnet Feminine

Collection. It is a collection that pays tribute to today’s woman, with the superbly stylish and luxuriously decorated finishes. Parker’s strong design codes are subtly combined in a trendy interpretation of metallic pink-gold colour, a chiselled shiny steel and feminine iridescent pearl lacquer.

Highlighted by the exquisite detailing of the 18k gold/rhodium-plated nib, the Sonnet Feminine Collection is the essence of modern femininity and elegance.

Coming soon … the next generation of Parker pens that will be launched in 2013. Parker will revolutionise writing when introducing the Parker 5th Technology, so named since it offers a genuine fifth way of writing – more than a touch, a stroke of genius! The creation of 5th Technology revealed an expectation for a single pen that combines the value of a metallic modern hood design, the superior experience of a soft writing feel and the convenience of a clean refill. Parker 5th Technology is the world’s first writing system that answers these needs. m

PARKER PENS: MORE THAN 120 YEARS OF INNOVATIONOver the past century the name Parker has become synonymous with high quality writing instruments, bringing to mind descriptions such as reliable, dependable, traditional, streamlined, stylish, prestigious, innovative and timeless.

Sellotape, is a brand acquired by Silveray Statmark Company (SSC) over a decade ago. This transparent, cellulose-based, pressure sensitive adhesive tape is a British invention that seems to have been around for as long as anyone can remember. It was, in fact, developed in 1937 and quickly proved indispensable throughout the United Kingdom, and now it is a household name across the globe.

Types of tapes available under the Sellotape brand include: Packaging Tapes in clear and buff, clear Sellotape for office and school, vinyl tape as well as invisible tape that can be written on. The range also includes, Sello-Notes, Sello-Flags and latest additions are the DIY products, hanging and mounting tape, mirror tape, as well as nail it tape.

Sello Buddies recently launched under the Sellotape brand with Sello-Note and Sello-Flag. The first is a range of colourful paper adhesive notes; the second are transparent, polypropylene-based flags. Sello-Notes and Sello-Flags are available in a wide range of colours, shapes and sizes and are made with a unique, low-tack adhesive. They are easily attached and removed, without leaving marks or residue. Whether at work, school or home, they are always ready to help you organise your life. Since 1893 Croxley has been a part of our South African history, Initially operated under the company name of John Dickinson, who invented the first continuous paper making machine.

Croxley was its flagship brand, specifically famous for fine paper and envelopes.

As the distributor of Croxley, Silveray Statmark Company celebrates the brand’s 119th birthday and congratulates all who helped with this phenomenal achievement and journey.

In the late 1950s, The Dickinson’s board started the mechanical manufacture of envelopes, while Croxley was brought to South Africa, New Zealand and Australia in 1917.

Today, 60% of Croxley products are manufactured locally in South Africa and 40% are imported from around the world.

The product range is vast and includes:Office small’s Punches & StaplersEnvelopesWriting BooksPen Carbon BooksPolypropylene FilingMeasuring ToolsColouring, Pencils & art CalculatorsBoard filingBack-to-school smallsColoured paper

The brand’s pay-off, “Write through your life” emphasises the importance of what people write in and on, based on a strong history of paper and paper converted products.

John Dickinson SA merged with ES & A Robinson Holdings Ltd of Bristol in 1966 and became (DRG) Dickinson Robinson Group, which was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1979 as DRG South Africa Limited. Four years later the Bristol group sold its South African interest to Kohler Limited, which retained the packaging interests and sold DRG Stationery to a Waltons - CNA partnership. This then became the Silveray Stationery Company.

When Bidvest acquired Waltons Stationery Company in June 1997, Silveray Stationery Company was part of that deal. In 2005, Silveray Stationery and Statmark merged, thus retaining SSC but rather as Silveray Statmark Company. The range of world-famous brands under one roof became extensive and includes names such as Croxley, STABILO, Maped, Rapid, Helix, Lion, Penguin and Rotring, to mention a few.

The quality Croxley brand is owned by Bidvest, but developed, distributed and marketed by SSC.

All Croxley paper-converted products are made by Silveray Manufacturing, while other local items come from factories all across South Africa.

In the past three years alone, the number of new sundry items has expanded making the Croxley range not only strong in paper converted products but also in sundries.

Breaking with tradition and moving into the 21st century, seven years ago the Croxley logo was re-designed, with great success, as the near future holds the promise of terrific new products, packaging and competitions. m

In 1920, Karl Hunke and Wilhelm Jochheim started the Durable company, manufacturing metal index tabs. From the start, the company flourished and by 1927 had 50 employees. World War II halted company growth, so in 1945 the company started up again with a staff of 30.

The next few years saw the introduction of the first plastics index systems and in 1959 the Duraclip patent clip folder was invented, providing the ultimate solution for filing documents without having to punch them. In 1980 subsidiaries were opened in England and Sweden, and over the next 22 years the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Poland, Italy, Austria and Russia followed.

Product accolades started accumulating from 1998 when the Sherpa® Display System Table 10 and Sherpa floor stand won the iF Design Award. In the last ten years the company received more than 40 national and international design and business awards. These include numerous ‘product of the year’ awards for manufacturing and marketing, for innovation, brand awareness and ecology.

One of the most enduring products invented by Durable is Duraclip. With 800 million sold in 80 countries, Duraclip is the most successful business folder worldwide and is still the market leader after almost 50 years. Duraclip sets the standard for performance, quality and variety. Its special steel clip grips negate the need for punching and filing while its strong covers protect contents from possible damage.

Duraclip is a universal folder, suited to a wide variety of uses such as presenting professional-looking CVs for job applications, presenting and filing quotations, hand-outs, reports and documents, for meetings and training sessions, and lots more.

At college and university the use of Duraclip folders makes the work stand out for all the right reasons. Not only are reports, essays and projects presented professionally, they are also protected from damage. They are ideal for filing course notes, being quick and easy to update.

The Durable Original 30 holds up to 30 A4 sheets of paper and comes in 12 colours to make your presentation as conservative or funky as the occasion demands – or to suit your personality – or to colour-code projects. The options are endless.

The Duraclip Original 60 has all the features and benefits found in the Duraclip Original 30, but securely holds double the capacity - up to 60 sheets of A4 paper.

The five-year guarantee is also a measure of the company’s confidence in Duraclip. m

Q&AThis month, My Office introduces you to Wayne Mostert: SSC Branch Manager, Johannesburg.

Dedicated to the future

Tell us about your childhood and some favourite memories growing up. Raised on the West Rand, I grew up in the days when kids still played in the streets and TV games were restricted to “Space Invaders” and “PacMan”. Some of my fondest memories are with a school friend named Charles Steyn – we are still friends today – where our biggest concerns were how many tyres we could ramp with our BMXs, running on tar roads barefoot and shooting birds with our “ketties”. At what stage of life do you find yourself now?Married for 15 years to Sonette, with two children Claudette and Jason. What is your life’s motto or personal brand?Hard work and long hours do eventually payoff.Use three words to describe yourself.Passionate, punctual, persevering. What is your business philosophy?Always strive to do better.Briefly describe the highlights of your working career.I worked with my Father for 10 years at Sonic Plastics, then went on my own, taking over the Durable agency in South Africa. I sold the agency to PWS and worked with them for five years. After a short stint with Staedtler I joined SSC and I’ve been here for six years. What do you do best?Cause trouble – I’m always looking for nonsense with my colleagues. What has been your greatest lesson in life?Patience – sometimes you need to stop pushing and wait for the good things to happen. If you could change one thing in your industry, what would it be?Stop parallel imports. How do you handle stress?I go to the driving range and smack a couple of balls.

What is the one thing you can’t do without? My cell phone and MS Outlook. What would you say is the most important ability for a leader to have? The ability to WIN the respect of the people you lead. What are the three pivotal moments in your career that you have learnt from?My first meeting with Hans Servas at Paperworld, Germany. I must have made an impression since he offered me a job a few years later. Establishing the independent SSC Johannesburg branch, which must rank as the most difficult and challenging project I have ever embarked on (and tested every part of my being). Thirdly, the privilege of attending the BidVest academy where many business and leadership skills were acquired. What is your favourite website?www.isohunt.comWhat was the last new thing you bought?Dishwashing machine!Where do you like to go on holiday? My parents live on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal and we go there quite often - nothing beats sponging off your parents. What car do you drive and why?Toyota Corolla, it’s a reliable company car.Tell us something about yourself, we didn’t know.I love the old classic glamour rock of the 80s – Metallica, Guns and Roses, ACDC, Led Zeppelin etc.How are you ‘Proudly South African’?I am optimistic and positive about the future of this great country for me and my children.Where/when do you read your copy of the My Office magazine?I read it every month from cover to cover, usually on a Sunday afternoon after church.Describe your dream life in six words.Ferrari, golf, beach, sundowners, family, friends!

light

Lighting is the most important part of the physical conditions within an office. Choose specific fixtures for the different areas of your work space and you ensure both harmony and clarity while at work.

Proper lighting involves a sufficient amount of light, proper distribution and diffusion, absence of glare, freedom from fluctuation and freedom from injurious invisible radiations.

Proper lighting in an office or at home is essential because it increases the rate of output, it ensures better quality of work, it helps in the reduction of fatigue, it helps in improving the morale of employees and can even ensure the high prestige of the company.

Lighting can be classified by its intended use as general, accent, or task lighting, depending largely on the distribution of the light produced by the fixture. The methods of lighting include downlighting, uplighting, backlighting, and frontlighting. Downlighting tends to be the most used method in both offices and home but can have dramatic problems with glare and

excess energy consumption due to the large number of fittings required.

Uplighting is often used to bounce indirect light off the ceiling and back down, while frontlighting is common but tends to make the subject look flat as its casts almost no visible shadows.

Lighting from the side is less common and tends to produce glare near eye level, while backlighting either around or through an object is mainly for accenting an object.

Architectural lighting design is a science as well as an art and applies to the lighting of structures. Aesthetic elements and the practicality of quantity of light required, occupants of the structure, energy efficiency and cost must be considered.

Incandescent light bulbs turn only about 10% of the energy they consume into actual emitted light. The remaining 90% of energy used is wasted as heat. Fortunately consumers are making a conscious shift to sourcing and implementing more efficient, energy saving lighting alternatives.

Lighting is complex and to achieve the maximum saving capacity the expertise of a good lighting consultant such as

Dummett & Co are needed.Lighting Innovations’ Bruce Waddell

said, “The lighting industry is pivotal to the South African economy and, as with all products, systems and services, what you put in is what you get out.”

Waddell made reference to the importing of grey products and its negative effect on the industry and its users. Products may seem worth the saving but unfortunately they underperform at less than 65% efficiency rating.

With summer just around the corner, the Lighting Warehouse has introduced innovative products that are ideal for any festive occasion. Their solar fairy lights are powered by the sun and comprise a string of single LEDs as well as an attached solar panel. Since they do not need an electrical point, they can be positioned virtually anywhere, however, the attached solar panel spike must be positioned in a sunny spot during the day, so that the batteries can be sufficiently charged for night time use. Cleverly, the solar spike has a built in daylight sensor to ensure operation at night only. m

Landscaping with southern African indigenous plants has a refreshingly different visual effect versus the more formal English and European styles or the highly disciplined Japanese and Zen type garden. There is far more potential for a free flowing natural effect throughout the garden by including our own indigenous trees, grasses, groundcovers, and shrubs, all blending in harmonious splendor.

Trevor Elliott of INDIGI-GROW, a proud and passionate grower and “indigi-scaper” of our natural flora has the following sound recommendations for your existing or new garden: “When planning your indigenous garden, remember that many indigenous plants are area specific and may not thrive out of their natural habitat. In South Africa, there are seven different vegetation regions with different climatic conditions and soil types. Plants that may thrive in coastal or fynbos type areas may not thrive well in the interior, due to changes of altitude, humidity and temperature.

“There are ample motives for considering an indigenous garden,” explains Trevor, “the desire to make a difference, even in a small way, to the future welfare of our mother earth. By going the indigenous “root”, there is a wondrous environmental spin-off. The abundance of vibrant birdlife and many small creatures such as lizards, chameleons, butterflies, insects and earthworms will quickly be attracted and thrive in such a garden.

“With more than 23 000 indigenous species occurring naturally in South Africa, why would anyone opt for alien, exotic flora in their gardens?” expounds Trevor. “Sadly, many garden lovers are

unaware of the many alien species, which have arrived in SA over decades, which are highly invasive. Many of these plants create havoc with our indigenous flora once they ‘escape’ into our countryside. They multiply at alarming rates and modify the environment, literally strangling, destroying and displacing plants that naturally grow in an area. This leads to an imbalance of vegetation, insects, birds and even mammals.”

INvASIvE ALIEN PLANTSERADICATE those aliens such as Bamboo, Syringa, Black and

Silver Wattle, Blue gum, Port Jackson Willow, Lantana, Sesbania and Bug weed, Trevor warns with conviction. These “ALIENS” rapidly command dominance over natural plants, not only in one’s own garden, but in reserves and precious conserved areas, where they grow rampantly, if not strictly controlled.

PLANNING yOUR INDIGENOUS GARDEN-HOME OR OFFICEPreparation, preparation and last but not least preparation. It is important that you have an understanding of what will

thrive in your regional area before you start your garden project, at your home or office. You would surely want an environmentally sound environment here.

The next step is to identify the condition of your soil and prepare it accordingly prior to any form of planting – this will ensure healthy long term growth of any planting that follows. A well laid out garden not only provides food and shelter for the birds and bees, but also… peace and food for the soul!

If Trevor has succeeded in inspiring some enthusiasm for your home or office garden environment, why not share his passion and ……… GO WILD & GROW INDIGENOUS.

There is a move afoot that will certainly gratify ‘Proudly South African’ protagonists – that is, the increased use of indigenous plants in your home or office garden.

While a number of schools in urban South Africa have incorporated the latest technology in the classroom,

for schools in rural areas being part of the

digital generation is marred with challenges. As a result, the majority of rural schools are left behind, unable to cross the digital divide, resulting in thousands of children not having the opportunity to experience enhanced learning.

Bridging the digital divideEducation facilities across the globe are experiencing first-hand the numerous benefits technology has with regards to helping children develop an understanding and love for learning.

16825 shop sa ad_sept_5.pdf 1 2012/08/22 4:00 PM

There are many ways to help empower communities but the key to empowerment is to uplift the youth. What better way to do so than to provide good quality, cost effective education by giving the youth access to new technologies; technologies that are fun, educational, radical and that have the ability to change the way children learn.

Schools should not be considered a dumping ground for old technologies. The user proficiency in schools is what will drive the productivity and economy of the future. MIB Technology - the first distributor of the LG U-series which offers features for educators and students who use computers for word processing, playing videos, internet access, e-mail and other simple applications in Africa - has developed a Tablet pc, now installed in 200 ICT labs in various schools. The Department of Education has been working in partnership with MIB Technology in order to achieve further roll-out.

Bandwidth is another large problem in schools across South Africa, especially those situated in rural areas. Schools are faced with three major challenges: the cost of bandwidth, connectivity to deep rural schools and volatility resulting in a lack of speed and reliability.

A passion for the children attending rural schools sparked the idea to create the Train Your Brain project, a partnership between MIB Technology and Government. The aim of this project is to implement an e-learning platform, enabling rural schools to gain access to information which

was previously only available to urban schools. While the project is important to all communities, it is critical to those who are disadvantaged as they can now have access to the vital knowledge required to address the vast inequalities in education. The project, with its core goal of bridging the digital divide and providing content and educational resources at a fraction of the normal cost, includes training of individuals to maintain implementation and running of the programmes.

Linked to Train Your Brain is the Educational Digital Resource Library, a portal that gives learners all the relevant content required from various providers. What makes the project unique is the technology mechanism, which reduces delivery costs of content; different content providers are all put into one delivery vehicle resulting in the end user having all information required available in one repository. Learners therefore have a vast array of educational material at their disposal, which is sure to increase their ability to understand all subject matter. In addition, teachers are trained on how to use the portal and can plan their lessons accordingly. m

Coun t e r f e i t i n g and piracy have grown into a global business estimated to exceed US$650 billion per annum, with more than half of the products moving through international trade channels (2008).

C o u n t e r f e i t electrical and electronic products occupy second place after pharmaceuticals. From components such as fuses, cables and circuit breakers to household equipment, professional work tools and automotive and aviation spare parts, nothing is safe from counterfeiting. While the appearance and packaging can be very convincing, the products themselves are often sub-standard and may represent a severe safety hazard, causing accidents and costing lives.

And while counterfeiting may sometimes be perceived as a trivial offence, it can be directly linked to international organised crime, while also financing other criminal activities.

Stopping counterfeiters is not enough. A large majority of consumers recognise that buying counterfeits is unethical but they feel it is essentially a victimless crime and seldom feel guilty about it. In the absence of obvious penalties against purchasers and sometimes sellers, they perceive counterfeiting to be harmless. They are generally unaware both of the economic impact of their act and the danger to their health.

Most consumers refuse to call themselves victims of counterfeiting, even if they have a bad experience with such a product. They believe that they control the situation and, in some cases, even feel empowered by their purchase. Generally the reasons for the purchase are lower price and impulse purchases. Even if they had the choice, consumers might not have the financial means to afford an original.

The South African consumer needs to be aware that counterfeiting is a crime, the Counterfeit Goods Act 37 of 1997, specifically defines the dealing in counterfeit goods as a criminal offence. The crime itself is in fact far from victimless, the tax revenue that is lost due to importing of counterfeit goods is estimated to be in excess of R2.5 billion in excise and VAT annually for counterfeit cigarettes alone.

The loss of jobs due to counterfeiting is

astounding. During 2010 it was estimated by the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union that 14,400 jobs were lost in the textile industry alone due to counterfeit garments being imported and sold. This does not even take into consideration the potential jobs lost as a result of this crime in all the other industries.

Consumers need to consider that corporations invest copious amounts of time and money into developing their brands and products. The brand itself is a promise to the consumer; a promise of quality and an assurance of peace of mind. The counterfeiters do not have the same regard for the quality or the assurance that a certain brand provides and as a result the product that is produced is done at the cheapest cost possible. Often this is done through the use of inferior quality materials, lack of proper testing and in most cases a disregard for the consumer after the sale.

Key components in fighting product piracy include protecting your assets legally and through technologies, stricter testing protocols and quality-control practices, and improved communication in the supply chain. Here are a few measures that should be integrated into a counterfeiting strategy:

1. Register trademarks, copyrights, designs, apply for patents

2. Join relevant industry associations3. Establish anti-counterfeiting policy, brand

protection programme – training initiatives 4. Apply relevant covert and overt anti-counterfeiting

technologies 5. Market surveillance, quality control, inspection 6. Interception and cooperation with law

enforcement.

Through the cooperative efforts of the South African Police Service, the Department of Trade and Industry, the South African Revenue Service and the relevant brand holders and their attorneys, numerous search and seizure operations and border stops take place on a daily basis.

However due to the sheer volumes of counterfeit goods being imported and traded on a daily basis the only way to address this issue is to alert the general public to the dangers and the true costs associated with this crime. Please stop supporting these criminals.

Test your knowledge with this relatively easy True or False quiz:A. Walking would be impossible without friction. B. An object acted upon by a net force will accelerate in the direction of that force.C. If an object accelerates, a force must be acting on it.D. Any time the forces are unbalanced, an object will remain at rest.E. Wheels make movement easy because rolling friction is lower than sliding friction.F. A helicopter hovers in the air due to buoyant force acting on it.G. In absence of air (say, on the moon), a coin will still fall faster than a feather.H. Friction always acts in the same direction of motion of an object.

There are three physical laws that fall within Newton’s laws of motion. The first law states that every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless acted on by external forces. The second law states the net force on an object is proportional to the time rate change of its linear momentum ie mass time acceleration. The third law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
