Here in sunny El Paso, winter comes and goes, barely kissing our noses with its cold touch. Most El Pasoans find themselves wear-ing tee shirts and sandals until late November and complaining when the daily high reaches a chilly 60 degrees. Fortunately unscathed by winter’s frigid grasp, we smoothly flow into the next seasons without any chilling memo-ries of the past months. Contrastingly, the United States Midwest is experiencing its cold-est winter yet, with some temperatures reach-ing lower than our planetary neighbors. Mountains of snow, threats of frostbite, and closed schools are some of the few results of an arctic cold front that is leisurely making its way across the United States. With tempera-tures already below zero and wind chills adding

to that number, many Americans find them-selves stranded in the warmth and comfort of their own home. The National Weather Service reports that some cities such as St. Louis, India-napolis, and Detroit are experiencing the coldest temperatures in nearly two decades. Tempera-

tures in parts of Montana, North and Minne-sota were 20-40 degrees lower than average- a chilling drop from average temperatures. Such intense weather wreaks havoc on the nation’s airlines, business’, and lives of its citizens. Freezing jet fuel and supplies left many traveling Americans stranded in air-ports. Some 4,392 flights were canceled and 3,577 were delayed. In oil producing states such as North Dakota and Texas, extreme cold left oil wells stranded and normal op-erations disrupted. The bitter weather is also affecting the nation’s livestock and grain in-dustry. Four weather related deaths have been reported thus far and the cold is not stopping.

In the wake of such record breaking ex-tremes, the chilly arctic air is said to even reach Southern states and has already left a mark on New England, halting traffic, travel, and school.

The heat is on for the cheerleading squad as they enter competition season and all their hard work will be put to the test. Since the summer they have been working on their rou-tine to prove themselves to the city as well as the nation. The girls compete here in El Paso as well as in Dallas, San Antonio, and California going against some of the toughest teams in the country. This is the real deal where high school

cheerleading squads get the chance to compete competitively aside from supporting and cheer-ing on the school sports. Competition season is here and we’re ready to bring home some first place trophies. The MHS cheerleading team consists of an intermediate and advanced varsity team with hardworking, determined girls pushing themselves to their fullest potential. Senior, Mo-randa Torres states, “We’ve been working all year for this. It’s time to show everyone what we can do and prove ourselves to be the best

in the nation.” These girls keep up with their school work, support and cheer for the school, and practice long hours to be the best they can be. Out of all the teams and clubs in the school, it’s easy to say the cheerleading team puts in the most hours practicing hard on their routines. Junior, Analie Martinez states, “These girls are like my family. I know I can trust and count on them for anything.” This cheerleading team works as one to show their amazing talents to everyone and as a result is known as the best

team in El Paso.

Benefit forViviana Aguirre

Catie BoyceStaff Writer

On the evening of January 3, 2014 Viviana Aguirre committed suicide in her home after posting her farewells to her friends and family on Facebook. Vivi-ana was 14 years old when she died, she attended Ysleta High School in El Paso, Texas. Ms. Aguirre unfortunately took her own life due to cyberbullying. On January 8, 2014 a candlelight vigil was held to commemorate her life, in honor of her accomplishments and the memo-ries they all had shared with her, over 100 people attended that night. Recently on January 25, 2014, a local rock music production company named DNA Pro-ductions set up a show to raise money for the grieving family for funeral expenses or anything they needed help on. At five dollars a head, they raised upwards of Four Hundred Forty (440) dollars that night. Nearly 100 people showed up to pay their respects to the family of Aguirre

and show their support against cyberbullying. Speeches were spoken by a couple victims of cyberbullying and bullying in general. Agu-irre’s family stayed quietly in their chairs and enjoyed the show, although there were many tears shed during the acoustic sets due to a lot of the songs dedicated to Aguirre. Her father, Rudy Sanchez, told KFOX “Viviana was a little angel. It’s hard for me to say this but it’s like she didn’t belong here. She belonged with the angels.” Friends and family of Aguirre said they wish they could have stopped a group of peers from bullying her. Messages on Facebook prove that people were telling Aguirre to kill herself and giving directions on how to do so. Her mother says that Viviana would tell her about it sometimes and she would tell her to cut off that friend, but it got to the point where Viviana wouldn’t tell her anymore. The girl’s parents says that she had been fighting depression for a while but they never thought it would come to this.

Respecting the wishes of Aguirre’s parents, this article will not include any photographs of the family.

Cyberbullying

Catie BoyceStaff Writer

The following article contains true facts about Cyberbullying. This information is found from BullyingStatistics.Org. Cyberbullying is when a person is being harassed, stalked, threatened, humiliated, embarrassed, or tor-mented through digital technology. Cyber bul-lying doesn’t always just happen through social media, it can happen through cell phones or any technology. Usually cyber bullying happens

between teenagers, with adults harassing minors or other adults too. Cyberbullying happens to children, teen-agers and even adults secretly every day. Sui-cide is the third leading cause of death annually. Each year approxamently 4,400 people choose to take their own lives. Out of every suicide, there is at least 100 attempts. According to Bul-lyStatistics.Org of Great Britain, at least half of the suicides are due to bullying. A study done by Yale University shows that girls ranging in ages from ages 10 to 14 are more likely to com-

mit suicide. According to Statistics shown by ABC News, nearly thirty percent of students are either bullies of or victims of bullying. Roughly 160,000 children stay home every day from school in fear of being bullied. Cyberbullying isn’t simply something to forget about, it has been taking to many lives in the past year alone. If you are caught cyberbullying someone by the law, you can either be cited, or be arrested.

Bruno Mars has invited the Red Hot Chili Peppers to join him during the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show on Fox in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, it was announced today during Fox’s broadcast of the NFC Divisional Round playoff game featuring the New Orleans Saint at Seattle Seahawks. Bruno Mars first announced his Super Bowl halftime performance during an unprec-edented live announcement on Fox NFL Sunday in New York City’s Times Square just before kickoff of the first Sunday of the 2013 season. Billboard’s 2013 Artist of the Year, Bruno Mars is a critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, producer and musician. The 18-time Grammy Award nominee and Grammy winner has sold over 130 million singles worldwide. His cur-rent album Unorthodox Jukebox and his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans have a com-bined certification total of 60x platinum world-wide. According to Billboard, Mars scored his first five “Hot 100” No. 1s faster than any male since Elvis Presley. As a singer, songwriter and producer, Mars has an impressive catalog of 22

“Hot 100” hits. Mars is nominated for multiple

major categories at this year’s Grammy Awards, including both “Record” and “Song of the Year”

for his hit “Locked Out Of Heaven,” in addi-tion to “Best Pop Vocal Album” for Unorthodox Jukebox and “Best Pop Solo Performance.” Bruno and his eight-piece band The Hooligans are set to launch the second leg of their sold-out Moonshine Jungle world tour in North America this summer. One of the most successful acts in rock history, Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer, Chad Smith, and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, have sold more than 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs, and won six Grammy Awards, including “Best Rock Album” for Stadium Arcadium, “Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group” for “Dani California,” “Best Rock Song” for “Scar Tissue,” and “Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal” for “Give It Away.” The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2012. The Red Hot Chili Peppers latest studio album, I’m With You, was released by Warner Bros. Records on Aug. 29, 2011. The Pepsi Super Bowl halftime show is the most-watched musical event of the year. More than 110.5 million viewers in the U.S. watched last year’s show. The Super Bowl and halftime show will be broadcast worldwide.

Carla ColacionStaff Writer The eagerness of thou-sands of fans in search of the 2013 Superbowl XLVIII Champion would be ended on February 2, 2014, when the Seattle, Seahawks were victori-ous 43-8 against the Denver, Broncos. What began with 32 ambitious teams kicking off the season in September, eventually evolved into 12 heart-playing teams in the year’s playoffs, that later resulted in the battle between Denver and Seattle. The MetLife stadium in the Big Apple was filled that Sunday evening with orange and green fans in support of both successful teams. Many can say that this year’s bowl was quite interesting and distinct compared to past year games considering it was ranked first in quite a few categories. Superbowl XLVIII recorded the fastest scoring points in Superbowl history due to hav-ing Seattle’s defense scoring on a safety. The Superbowl would be the first to play in an open stadium in such extreme weather conditions that were found in New York during those weeks. This Superbowl had the number one seeds from each confer ence meet in the league champion-ship, the second time in twenty seasons. Anoth-er interesting fact about Superbowl XLVIII was that Seattle had the number one ranked defen-sive player in the NFL, Richard Sherman, and Denver had the number one ranked offensive player in the NFL, Peyton Manning. What is the number one quarterback though without the help of the rest of his team? For many, the year of the game wasn’t played the way it should

have been.

The game was kicked off by Seattle, having Denver receive and allowing them to quickly score on Safety. Moments later Steven Hauschka increased the score 5-0 with a 31 yard field goal, followed by another 33 yard field goal that gave Seattle and 8 point lead. A couple of minutes into the second quarter, Lynch successfully completed a 1-yard touch-down that elevated their lead 15-0. After finally receiving their first, first down of the game, Manning threw an interception and Malcolm Smith was able to give the Seahawks a 69-yard touchdown, making the score 22-0. In their return after halftime, Seattle scored an 87-yard touchdown a couple of seconds into the third quarter, placing the Seahawks at a 29-0 ad-vantage. After evading four defensive tackles, Jermaine Kearse had a 23-yard touchdown reception. Towards the end of the third quarter, Peyton Manning finally brought some points to his team with a 14-yard touchdown toss to Thomas and a 2 point conversion, ending the

quarter 36-8. Baldwin from the Seahawks suc-cessfully caught a 10-yard pass from Wilson, giving Seattle a 35 point lead. This score brought an end to the year of the game giving the Seattle Seahawks their first Superbowl Championship title. Who could forget some of the other key features that make the Su-perbowl feel complete for fans such as the performers and commercials. The pre-game show consisted of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Syracuse Universi-ties’ marching band followed by Queen Latifah’s singing of “America the Beautiful.” The National Anthem was sung by opera singer, Renee Flemming. The show began with “Billionare,” sung by a childrens choir, and fans rose

as Bruno Mars began his performance with, “Locked out of Heaven.” The singer was then joined by the well-known band, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Both performers created an upbeat atmosphere for fans, and it was mentioned that Superbowl XLVIII had the most halftime show viewers than any other year. The commercials seen during the game are an asset to the Su-perbowl but comments arose claiming that this year’s commercials lacked creativity and humor compared to previous years. From the game, to the performances, to the commercials, the Superbowl has effectively created an impact in American tradition. Many say that the year of the game should even be considered a national holiday considering how important it has become to American culture. The same game Americans look forward to each year, but quite distinct than previous years, Su-perbowl XLVIII was surely a game to remem-ber.

After a mysterious, lost night on their honey-moon, a newlywed couple fi nds themselves dealing with an earlier-than-planned pregnancy. While recording everything for posterity, the husband begins to notice odd behavior in his wife that they initially write off to nerves, but, as the months pass, it becomes evident that the dark changes to her body and mind have a much more sinister origin.A movie critic named Rafer Guzman from Newsday stated that the movie is “A disjointed and unconvincing movie that is also embar-rassingly derivative of “Paranormal Activity.” Another critic named Kristian Harloff from Schmoes Know stated “How many more of these can we watch and still enjoy the impact of “The Blair Witch Project” or “Paranormal Activity”? I’ll try to forgive those fi lms for spawning such boring evil but “The Devil’s Due” is due no forgiveness whatsoever. “ As you can see the move doesn’t look so good and we suggest you don’t waste your precious money on the ticket to the theatre.

Congrats to the Montwood Robotics Team 5911 who placed 4th out of 22 teams in the Paso del Norte FTC Regional Qualifier at UTEP Memorial Gym, this Saturday. Both of our teams will be moving to the

super regional qualifier in Lubbock for the third year in a row. Mont-wood beat out teams from Coronado, Eastwood, EDHS, SHS, VVECHS, Harmony, and DaVinci, to name a few. We would like to thank those who came out to support us this Saturday. I personally would like to thank Mr. Ramirez (TOY!) and Mr. Polanco for all the time they spent with robotics while I was busy doing girls basketball.

After a rather grueling 2 days of debates at the West Texas Na-tional qualifiers, Derrian Doblado and Elijah Valle took the second place trophy in CX debate. That is an honorable achievement, but only the first place team advances to national tournament, so we are disappointed. It was so sus-penseful and SO close ( they beat the winning team earlier in rounds, but came up short in the final round). Please give these graduating seniors props when you see them, they worked so hard and it is all the more poignant that this turned out to be the last debate of their high school careers. We had hoped to make this our third year in a row taking the Na-tional spot. Arghhhh, so darn close!

Please-congratulateSamantha Shelton and Alexis Zavala. CX debate advanced to quarter finals
