TIDBITS SAYS...
Let Them Eat
CAKEby Kathy Wolfe
Angel food, bundt, chiffon, round or pound, this week’s Tidbits definitely takes the cake! Slip on your oven mitts on as we bake up a few delectible facts about these tempting treats. But be warned, your sweet tooth and salivaries may kick in and send you scampering to the nearest bakery!• Ancient Egypt was home to the world’s first
large-scale bakeries, which were the first known to use yeast for making cakes rise before baking them on hot stones. To the ancient Romans, cake basically meant a small bread loaf, since there was no sugar, and honey was a rare commodity.
• Cake-baking underwent a dramatic change in the mid-1800s. Previously, yeast was used as a leavening agent, but yeast was replaced with the introduction of both baking soda and baking powder, which are more effective as raising agents. Temperature-controlled ovens also im-proved both baking quality and techniques.
• Flour is classified by its protein content. The higher the protein, the harder the flour. All-purpose flour has a protein content of 10-11 percent and is a good choice for cookies. Bread flour’s content is much higher at 15 percent, and is not suitable for cakes. Cake flour’s protein measures 7-8 percent, and its low gluten content makes it a perfect choice for delicate cakes.
• Sponge cake uses only eggs, sugar and flour in

are full-sized, large enough to accommodate rail traffic. Between these two train tunnels is a service tunnel, a smaller tube that is an emergency escape route. Travelers with their own automobiles leave their vehicles parked on enclosed double-decked rail cars that shuttle them through, thus avoiding the problem of accumulating exhaust fumes in the tunnels. Drivers are free to leave their vehicles and ride in the rail passenger cars.
• The Chunnel bridges a distance of 31.4 miles between Folkestone in the United Kingdom and Coquelles, France, near Calais. The tunnel actually runs under water for 23 of those miles. Boring machines worked from both the English side and the French side in a race to the middle, a contest won by the British. The tunnel’s average depth is 148 feet below the seabed, with its deepest point at 250 feet.
• On May 6, 1994, the day of the official dedi-cation ceremony, England’s Queen Elizabeth traveled through the Chunnel on a Eurostar train, while French President Mitterrand
Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the Channel Tunnel, or Chunnel as it is commonly called, links England and France through large tubes bored deep beneath the English Channel. Follow along to learn more about this modern engineering marvel that speeds travelers below the ocean floor through the world’s longest marine subway. • The concept of an undersea tunnel between
England and France was conceived as early as 1802, when a French mining engineer envisioned a passageway lit by oil lamps and serviced by horse-drawn coaches. The proposal included an artificial island midway as a stop for changing horses. Other ideas were presented over the next several decades, but it wasn’t until 1988 that a final plan was approved and the actual excavation began.
• Construction of the massive six-year project took the cooperation of both English and French engineers. More than 15,000 workmen were employed, working from either side toward the middle. Three of those years were devoted to the actual boring of the chalky earth beneath the sea floor. Working almost continuously, the gigantic boring machines could progress an average of 250 feet per day.
• There are actually three tunnels, two of which

its preparation, with no fat or leavening. The trick to a perfect sponge cake is to beat air into the batter at several stages during preparation.
• Order up tiramisu for dessert, and you’ll receive layers of ladyfingers soaked in espresso liqueur and layered with a custard mixture, topped off with chocolate shavings. Ladyfingers, light sweet sponge cakes about four inches long, have been around since the late 1400s, when they were created to celebrate a visit of the King of France to Italy. They are also used in trifles, a layered dessert that incorporates cake, jam, custard, fruit and whipped cream. The trifle is served in a clear glass bowl so that all the tempting layers are visible.
• Bundt cakes have been around since 1950, when the fluted tubular pan was created by Nordic Ware founder, David Dahlquist. A group of Jewish women in Minneapolis approached Dahlquist, asking him to design a pan based on an old European kugelhopf mold brought from the old country. The name was derived from the German word bund, which translates “gathering of people.” Dalquist added the “t” at the end to make it unique. His original bundt pans had ridges, which gave the cake with the hole in the middle its classic look.
• German chocolate cake actually has nothing to do with Germany or its inhabitants. That rich chocolate layer cake with coconut pecan filling topped with chocolate frosting sprinkled with more coconut goes back to 1852 in Dorchester, Massachussets. Sam German, an Englishman
and employee of the Walter Baker Chocolate Company, developed a milder, sweeter baking chocolate than the bittersweet chocolate commonly used. Originally named German’s Sweet Chocolate Cake in honor of his name, the possesive form (German’s) was eventually dropped to become German chocolate cake, as we know it today.
• Did you ever wonder where the pound cake gets its name? Developed in England during the 1700s, the recipe called for a pound each of butter, eggs, flour and sugar. The name of this concoction might well have been an indicator of how much one might gain from its consumption!
• Smith Island, Maryland, located in Chesapeake Bay, is home to the state’s official cake, aptly named Smith Island Cake. The recipe dates back to the late 1600s and consists of 10 to 12 thin layers of yellow cake sandwiched together with rich chocolate fudge icing.
• A dome-shaped cake filled with mousse and/or custard is known as a bombe, from the French word meaning domed or rounded. The cake is flipped from its dome-shaped mold onto a plate, then covered with a layer of chocolate or meringue.
• What’s full of spices, frequently “re-gifted” and the subject of comedians’ jokes? That’s right, a fruitcake! Although this dense cake dates back to Roman times, its popularity increased greatly in the 1800s, when it became the preferred choice at Christmas gatherings and weddings. Loaded with glazed dried fruit, raisins and nuts, fruitcakes are often soaked in brandy, whiskey or liqueur.
• The first boxed cake mix in the United States appeared around 1930, distributed by a molasses company, O. Duff and Sons. Seven other companies followed suit over the next 15 years. The convenient and easy-to-prepare baking product is now dominated by Betty Crocker and Pillsbury, neither of which hit the grocer’s shelves until the late 1940s.
• When Charles and Diana wed in 1981, they had, count ‘em, 27 wedding cakes. Their official royal wedding cake stood over five feet tall and was prepared by the head baker of the Naval Armed Forces. The entire carefully planned process took over 14 weeks to prepare! Two identical versions of the elaborate, five-tier cakes were made in the event that (horrors!) one might collapse. The ornately festooned bottom layer alone required 12 hours to bake.
• A roulade is what most of us know as a jelly roll, a sponge cake that is filled with buttercream, fruit, lemon curd, whipped cream or ganache, then rolled up. At Christmas, you might see a Buche de Noel, or Yule Log, a roulade filled

Four high school seniors sufferingfrom “spring fever” skipped theirmorning classes and went to thebeach instead. After lunch, theyreturned to school and told their

Much to their relief, she smiled.“You missed a test today,” she

She waited for them to sit down, and then began. “Question One:Which tire on the car was flat?”

1. What euphemism is used to describe someone who is a little bit crazy or batty?
2. What name is used for a white layer cake with caramel frosting?
Names can certainly be misleading. Cheesecake isn’t acake at all, but rather a custard pie made from cream cheese, Neufchatel or ricotta cheese, and occasionally sour cream. Likewise,Boston Cream Pie is really a cake -- two layers of sponge cake filled with custard and glazed with chocolate. Coffee cake is more like a bread than it is a cake, and a funnel cake is a Pennsylvania Dutch recipe for a fried cookie sprinkled with powdered sugar.

traveled from Paris. Their trains stopped nose to nose as part of the festivities. Over the next six years, 12 million passengers utilized the new rail service. Last year, close to 10 million people rode the rails under the English Channel.
• The Chunnel certainly couldn’t be considered an economical venture. It was one of history’s most expensive construction projects, carrying a price tag of $21 billion, (about 700 times the cost of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge!), 80 percent above the forecasted budget, and more than a year beyond the estimated completion date. The project claimed the lives of 10 workers; eight Brits and two Frenchmen.
• Since its opening, there have been three major fires in the tunnel, producing serious damage. One year into operation, 31 people were trapped in a fire, but the service tunnel proved its worth, as all passengers were able to escape. In addition, there have been other incidents when passengers have become trapped by electrical failures. One such failure kept passengers stranded for six hours, while another incident involving freezing electrical lines trapped over 2,000 commuters under the sea overnight.
• The average ticket price on a Eurostar passenger train from London to Paris is about $200 for a trip that takes two hours and 20 minutes. About 30,000 people ride the Chunnel train daily. ■
The Tunnel runs a distance
of 31.4 miles between
Folkestone in the U.K. and
Calais, France.
● It’s still not known who made this sage observation: “Wisdom is divided into two parts: a) having a great deal to say, and b) not saying it.”
● In 1931, the Newspaper Enterprise Association predicted that crime would be nearly gone in 20 years.
● Do you subscribe to the adage “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”? Consider this: Would that teen heartthrob of an earlier day, Bobby Darin, have become so popular if he had been known by his giv-en name, Walden Cassotto?
● At one time, Canada’s CBC network banned the children’s cartoon “Rocky and Bullwinkle” because of its sometimes unflat-tering portrayal of the Mounties.
● Sometimes scientists get to express their creativity when they have the oppor-tunity to name things. Take deep-sea sites, for example: in the North Atlantic is the Por-cupine Abysmal Plain, Clam Acres is off the west coast of Mexico, and there’s a site near the Galapagos Islands called Hole-to-Hell.
● Those who study such things have found that a sneeze leaves your mouth at more than 100 m.p.h.
● Donald Duck’s middle name is “Fauntle-roy.”
● The game of chess originated in In-dia in about 2,000 B.C. -- it was called “chaturanga.” And it didn’t look quite like the modern version that is played all over the world today. Chaturanga had only four kinds of pieces: elephants, chariots, horses and foot soldiers.
● A Rochester, Mich., law states that any-one who is bathing in public must be wear-ing a bathing suit that has been inspected by a police officer. *** Thought for the Day: “You may do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm.” -- Colette

Veteran Foreclosures Veterans weren’t forgotten in the recent $25 billion mortgage servicing settlement. In fact, veter-ans were treated much better than civilian counter-parts who’d had their homes foreclosed. In the lawsuit leading to the settlement, it was determined that the four biggest mortgage ser-vicers violated the Servicemen’s Civil Relief Act, the law that outlines the rules under which mortgages must be handled for veterans. Those banks will now have to pay veterans $116,785 each, plus equity that was lost in the prop-erty after it was wrongfully foreclosed, plus any inter-est. That number might end up being higher. JP Morgan Chase will need to provide the veteran with his or her property “free and clear of any debt or the cash equivalent of the full value of the home at the time of sale.” Citigroup, Wells Fargo and Ally will have to give a refund to any veterans charged more than 6 percent interest on a mortgage after receiving a request to lower that rate, plus triple that amount. The agreement expands and beefs up the rules for SCRA. Previously a bank was prohibited from foreclosing on a veteran-owned property if the
mortgage was taken out before the veteran began military service. Now the rule will additionally state that no matter when the mortgage began, if the vet-eran received Hostile Fire/Imminent Danger Pay and was away from home within nine months of fore-closure, the veteran is protected from foreclosure. If you believe you are covered by this settle-ment, get your paperwork in order and call for mili-tary legal assistance. Go online to http://legalas-sistance.law.af.mil and look in the Legal Services Locator for the Armed Forces Legal Assistance of-fice nearest you. Also see www.servicemembers.gov for information, or call the Justice Department at 1-800-896-7743.

Even our attention to safetyis a relief. When you fill your prescription at Walgreens, rest assured that it is carefully checked for potentially unsafe drug interactions with
other prescriptions you’ve filled at Walgreens and over-the-counter medications that you tell us about.
If there’s a problem, we’ll work with your doctor to provide you with another option.
Walgreens makes it easy to switch your prescription from a different pharmacy. Just bring in your prescription bottles. No need to call your doctor or wait for your current prescription to run out.
To learn about other services that will help you feel better about your pharmacy care, visit Walgreens.com.

Q: You always seem to be on top of this, so could you let me know as soon as you find out who the new contestants will be on the next season of “Dancing with the Stars”? -- Pauline R., Oxford, Ohio
A: You know I will, Pauline. The new sea-son’s contestants are the usual hodgepodge of ath-letes, singers, entertainment reporters and actors (with the usual soap star thrown in for good mea-sure). The new season, which begins Monday, March 19, consists of “Family Matters” actor Jaleel White, singer Gladys Knight, football player Donald Driver (who did very well for me in fantasy football a few years back), “The View” co-host Sherri Shepherd, singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw, “Little House on the Prairie” actress Melissa Gilbert, Disney Channel star Roshon Fegan, tennis player Martina Navrati-lova, soap star Jack Wagner, telenovela star William Levy, operatic singer Katherine Jenkins and “Extra” co-host Maria Menounos. ***
Q: I love ABC’s “Suburgatory,” es-pecially Jeremy Sisto. I’ve had a crush on him since “Clueless.” Any chance that one of his former “Clueless” castmates will appear on his new show? -- Justine M., via e-mail
A: Not only is there a chance, but it is actu-ally happening. “Clueless” star Alicia Silverstone will join Jeremy on “Suburgatory” for a four-episode story
arc at the end of this first season. No word yet on her character, but I can’t wait to see what they come up with! ***
Q: It’s official; I am hooked on “GCB.” Can you give me any info on the handsome actor who plays Blake? -- Trudy F., via e-mail
A: Mark Deklin, 44, along with being a su-per actor, also is a professional fight director, talented musician, smarty-pants English- and h i s t o r y - d e g r e e holder, father, hus-band and all-around great guy. I spoke with him recently about his role of in-the-closet Blake (who’s married to Cricket, but it’s OK, because she knows and is fine with it), and he gave me the scoop: “As the season goes on, we explore the dynam-ic of our marriage,” Mark said. “What are the rules? If we’re not jealous of the other’s sexual encounters, what are the things that we ARE jealous of? There are certain guidelines. Being with someone else sexually is not seen as a betrayal in that marriage, but having a best friend outside the marriage IS a betrayal. We’ve had a lot of fun figuring it out together.” ***
Q: Can you tell me what one of my fa-vorite actresses, Elaine Hendrix, has been up to lately? -- Jeff D., Savannah, Ga.
A: Aside from saving animals in her spare time as the founding officer of Animal Rescue Corps,
the “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” ac-tress just landed a lead role opposite Judy Greer in the ABC pilot “American Judy.” The comedy centers on Judy, who gets married and moves to the suburbs, juggling stepkids, her mother-in-law and the ex-wife (Elaine) of her husband, who also happens to be the town sheriff.

Divorce Decrees Do Not Faze Lenders Dear Mary: When I divorced four years ago, the judge ordered my husband to remove my name from his truck loan (this was included in the divorce papers). My husband did not remove my name, and the truck was repos-sessed. I immediately called the finance com-pany and explained everything, but nothing changed. They eventually wrote off the balance, but the repossession is still on my credit report. -- Rose, Illinois
Dear Rose: I am not an attorney, but my understanding of the law is that your divorce decree did not bind the lender for the truck note. Your husband could have done everything, and it would not have made any difference. You were
still responsible as a cosigner on the truck note, no matter what the divorce decree stated. The only thing you can do at this point is to use the order to help defuse your negative credit history should you need to apply for credit in the future. * * * Dear Mary: I joined a debt management program (DPM). The program takes out one lump sum from my checking account each month, plus a $30 fee. They did get some of the credit card companies to lower my APR, and one company lowered it to zero. I am thinking about doing this on my own, but I’m afraid that some of my creditor’s will increase the APR. None of my credit card accounts have been paid off. -- Linda, email
Dear Linda: I would be very cautious if I were you. It sounds to me as though you are mak-ing great progress on your DPM. I suggest you stay at least until several of your balances are paid off. At that point, if you still feel like you want to go it alone, be open with your counselor. Call a couple of your creditors, and ask them the consequences if you were to leave the DPM. Then take all of the information under advisement. Now is not the time to become overly confident. *** Dear Mary: How can I remove the grease
and grime from the shop rags our mechanics use? I would like to degrease them enough so that they can be reused. -- Julie, Montana
Dear Julie: The secret is to presoak those towels in baking soda. Fill a bucket with clean, warm water, and toss in the towels. A 5-gallon bucket can hold up to seven shop towels. Add 1/2 cup of baking soda, which will help break up the grease and oil that has been ground into the tow-els. Soak for an hour or two. Dispose of this water as you do other contaminates in your shop. Refill the bucket with hot water and add Goop or whatever grease-remover soap you use. Allow the towels to soak for another hour. Rinse the towels. Any oil and grease should be removed at this point. If not, repeat the process until all contaminants are removed. Once they are free of grease and oil, they can be rinsed in the sink or run through a washing machine.

Matty’s Hero According to SafeKids.org, about 230 chil-dren die every year in “backover” or “frontover” acci-dents: accidents in which they are run over by a car, usually driven by a family member or close friend, and often in their own driveway. Imagine what that number is for dogs and cats. Then imagine what the aftermath looks like. Here’s a glimpse: Kona, a Labrador mix, was 8 weeks old when my husband, Ron, and I brought her home. She was my first puppy, and I adored her! On Memorial Day of 2005, Ron and I and the dogs -- Kona and our 5-year-old Rottweiler, KC -- were out front enjoying a beautiful day. I was washing my car; he was washing his work van. Unknown to us, Kona had fallen asleep under the wheel of Ron’s van. When he went to move the van, he ran over her. I heard her cry out, and I screamed, too. Ron panicked and rolled the van back over her again. It was pandemonium at that point. I grabbed Kona, who was already going into shock, and Ron got a blanket. He and I rushed our puppy to our vet. They couldn’t help her, so we took her to a clinic. The doctor told us Kona’s back left leg was bro-ken in three places. Her tail was broken at the base and would have to be removed. The possibility of her ever being able to control her bowls was slim to none. We knew he was trying to tell us that there was no hope for Kona. Ron was guilt-ridden. I could not stop crying. Ron told the doctor to save her. When we took her home, she had a metal rod in her leg. We had to keep her in a pen. A 5-month-old puppy. Can you imagine? My husband built her a really nice pen, and we kept it clean and free of feces. She had many meds that needed to be administered throughout the day and night. Needless to say, our lives were completely centered on Kona. We got through the months of rehab, and her bowels were functioning perfectly. We were so happy! Then a strange skin infection appeared on her rear hip. To make a long story short, she needed surgery to cut out the infection: She had more than 200 stitches and gained the nickname FrankenPuppy, but she re-covered from that, as well. When you see Kona run, you would never know the awful events that plagued her life and ours when she was a puppy. She is a living miracle. We nev-er regretted the expense or the time involved in getting her through it all. The best way to prevent “frontover” and “backover” accidents is to be aware that they hap-

pen. Check under and around your car before mov-ing it. Know where your dog is at all times. Keep him out of the street and away from the driveway. Use a lead in the front yard. Keep him on a leash. Fence in the front yard, separating it from the driveway and the road. Or decide that the front yard is off limits to the dog. Kona is one of the lucky ones. Lucky in life, lucky in love. Not everyone has the financial re-sources, and there are times when there is no way around that. But it’s also true that not everyone is willing to stand by through thick and thin, in sick-ness and in health. Often, when I share a letter from a reader, it’s an example of what not to do. But this letter is an example of pet ownership at its best: total commit-ment, unflinching responsibility and wholehearted dedication to the health and well-being of the ani-mals that enrich our lives. Woof!

Osteoporosis Deadly as Cancer for Women Osteoporosis is as common as cancer and heart disease, and it’s a leading cause of fractures, chronic disability, difficulty with walking, severe pain and a poor quality of life. The World Health Orga-nization reports that osteoporosis ranks second to cardiovascular disease as a global health care problem. And research shows that a 50-year-old woman has the same risk of dying from complica-tions of a hip fracture as from breast cancer. In 2010, 30 million women and 14 million men will either suffer from osteoporosis or have os-teopenia, a significant thinning of bone that hasn’t reached the severity of osteoporosis. The most important complication of osteoporosis is a fracture. The disease is more common in women -- 1 in 3 will suffer a fracture during their lifetime. After age 50, the fracture risk increases to 50 percent. And men are not immune. Their risk of fracture is 20 percent under the age of 50 and 30 percent over the age of 60. Fractures of the hip, wrist or back usually follow a fall. Occasionally, an osteoporotic bone may be so thin that a spontaneous fracture can occur without injury. Following a hip fracture, the risk of death within the next year is 20 percent, and another 20 percent require admission to a nursing home because of an inability to walk. Only a third of those who have a hip fracture return to their normal level of function. Vertebral fractures can occur spontane-ously or following a fall. An acute vertebral fracture causes severe pain. If vertebral collapse is noted, a vertebroplasty should be considered. During a ver-tebroplasty, a needle is inserted into the vertebra. A balloon is used to expand the vertebra into its normal shape and cement is injected to prevent the collapse from reoccurring. Vertebral fractures can occur gradually and at multiple sites, leading to loss of height and curvature of the upper spine referred to as a dowager’s hump. These fractures, as well as microscopic fractures of very thin bone, lead to chronic pain that can be debilitating, affect gait and
balance. It can also cause an increased risk of be-coming physically dependent on others and a poor quality of life. We must do everything we can to prevent osteoporosis, detect it early and provide treatment to reverse the problem and avoid complications. Osteoporosis can be prevented by assuring ad-equate intake of calcium during the growing teen-age years and thereafter. The average daily diet should contain about 500 milligrams of calcium from nondairy sources and 1 ounce of cheese or a glass of milk. If no dairy products are consumed, 500 milligrams of calcium plus 200 units of vitamin D should be taken with meals twice daily, beginning with the teenage years. Exercise that builds muscle and bone is just as important. Every woman should be screened for osteoporosis at menopause. This involves a nonin-vasive test called a DEXA scan. Follow-up screen-ings usually are recommended every three years. However, a recent study in the New England Jour-nal of Medicine indicated that if the DEXA scan was normal, a repeat scan was not needed for 10 years. If bone thinning or osteopenia is identified, a scan should be repeated in five years. Only those at very high risk should be scanned every three years or sooner. If osteoporosis is diagnosed, therapy with medications can build bone and reduce the risk of fracture by 50 percent or more. Bisphospho-nates such as Fosamax and Boniva are commonly prescribed. They can be given orally or intrave-nously every three months, or annually. In most circumstances, the generic alendronate should be prescribed first. Although rare, side effects include gastrointestinal distress, jawbone problems and an unusual fracture of the thighbone. Because of these risks, a complete dental checkup should be conducted before starting a bisphosphonate. In ad-dition, complications can be reduced if the medica-tion is stopped after seven years. This is called a drug holiday and should last anywhere from one to three years. Remember, osteoporosis is as serious a problem as cancer. The deleterious effects on qual-ity of life make it imperative that we do everything we can to reduce the risk of this devastating illness. TUES., JAN. 24
This Florida Doctor Is a Quack Sometimes, I really feel as if I should just give up. In fact, if it were not for the encouraging emails I get from many of my readers telling me to “hang in there” and “keep up the good fight,” I probably would have stopped addressing bogus emails that spread lies and misinformation about Social Security a long time ago. It’s so darn frustrating for a number of reasons. For one thing, as soon as I set the record straight on one little bit of Internet gossip, some more pops up. Also, I know that these titillating tall tales spread far and wide, reaching way more people than my little column does. So even though I’m put-ting up a good fight, I definitely am losing the war to those who revel in repeating ridiculous rumors. And that leads to the third reason I find these exercises so maddening. I know that these rumor-mongers aren’t really interested in knowing the truth. They use the Internet to find far-fetched fairy tales that reinforce their already narrowly held and close-minded views. And then they email those pieces of puffery to like-minded folks who, in turn, email other people -- and pretty soon the whole coun-try starts believing this stupid stuff. The latest one that was passed along to me by many readers was allegedly written by a Florida emergency room doctor. He begins his xenophobic epistle with this little bit of hyperbole: “I live and work in a state overrun with illegals.” He then goes on to discuss all the illegal im-migrants he treats in his emergency room. How he
finds out they are “illegal” in the hectic and some-times chaotic conditions of an emergency room puz-zles me. My hunch is he figures that if they speak Spanish, they must be illegal. Anyway, next he gripes about all the sup-posed government benefits these folks are getting. He rants and raves about how hardworking Ameri-cans get far less from their government, and he says that we shouldn’t have to take this anymore and that it’s all those idiots in the White House and Congress who are messing things up -- and blah, blah, blah. Every statistic cited in his email is totally bo-gus. I’ll just tackle a few of the most outrageous lies involving benefits administered by Social Security.
Lie: “If immigrants are over 65, they can apply for SSI and Medicaid and get more than (an American) woman who has worked hard all her life and paid taxes and yadda, yadda, yadda...” Truth: The only people who qualify for Sup-plemental Security Income and Medicaid are U.S. citizens. Even immigrants living here legally can’t get SSI. Certainly, illegal immigrants can’t get SSI. (As a reminder to my readers: SSI is a federal wel-fare program that is paid for out of general tax rev-enues but that is managed by the Social Security Ad-ministration. The group that constitutes the highest percentage of SSI recipients is composed of elderly women -- and all of them are U.S. citizens.)
Lie: “The federal government provides a refugee with a total income of $2,470 per month.” Truth: This is absolutely ridiculous. I don’t see how anyone can believe this hogwash. If you think it’s true, go down to a Social Security office, and tell the people there you are a “refugee.” Let me know whether they hand you a check for $2,470 and tell you those checks will keep rolling in every month. To qualify for Social Security benefits, you must work and pay taxes for a minimum of 10 years. And if you worked just that minimal amount of time, you would get a very small benefit -- less than $500 per month.
Lie: “Someone who has paid into Social Se-curity for 40-50 years can only get a monthly maxi-mum of $1,012.” Truth: The maximum Social Security ben-efit currently paid to someone retiring at 66 is about $2,400 per month. And many folks work beyond age
66 and are getting much more than that -- some in the $3,000 to $4,000 per month range. In effect, there is no “maximum” Social Security benefit, because if you wanted to, you could keep working until you are 100 years old and continue to build up the amount of your Social Security check.
Lie: “(A good old-fashioned American wom-an) is only getting $794 per month because she was born in 1924 and there is a Catch-22.” Truth: There is no Catch-22 that deprives people of Social Security money. I’m sure the alleged doctor is referring to something called “the notch.” The notch was a scam perpetrated on seniors about 20 years ago. Misleading mailings were sent out to millions of senior citizens, trying to convince them the government was cheating them out of Social Security money. The whole thing was a swindle designed to get seniors to send in money to bogus groups and organizations. And these rip-off artists raked in hundreds of millions of dollars. To this day, there are many seniors who incorrectly believe they have been cheated out of Social Security money. If this “Florida emergency room doctor” practices medicine as poorly as he understands gov-ernment benefit programs, I sure hope I never need critical care in the Sunshine State.

Is It a Migraine? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had headaches since I was 12. I am now 32. I hear people talk about their migraine headaches and wonder if I might have them. What makes a headache a migraine headache? I take as-pirin for my headaches. It helps, but not all that much. Are there special medicines for mi-graines? -- K.D.
ANSWER: Yes, there are special migraine medicines, so it is important to determine if your headaches are true migraine headaches. Some of the distinguishing attributes of mi-graines are the following: They begin before age 40. More women have them than men. The headache starts out with minor pain but often progresses to intense and incapacitating pain. The word used to describe it is “throbbing.” Nausea and vomiting fre-quently accompany it. In a little more than half of migraine patients, the headache is on one side only. Bright lights and noise intensify the pain. Suffer-ers try to find a dark, quiet room where they can lie down until the headache goes, and that can take four to 72 hours. Migraine sufferers can identify triggers that bring on their headaches. Stress, missing a meal, too much or too little sleep, menstrual periods, bright lights, certain odors like cigarette smoke or perfume and fatigue are some of the things that start a migraine. Alcohol -- beer and red wine in particular -- chocolate, some cheeses and cured meats like hot dogs, sausage and bacon are triggers for some. Aspirin, Tylenol, Midrin and naproxen alle-viate mild migraines. Cafergot is a migraine standby. A group of newer drugs are especially good for mi-graine sufferers. Seven of them are available. Some names are Imitrex, Maxalt and Zomig. Imitrex comes as a nasal spray and as an injection, adminis-tered like insulin. Zomig also comes as a nasal spray. This is a godsend for those who become sick to the stomach along with the headache. Not all migraine headaches produce all the signs and symptoms I mentioned, but if you have more than two of these characteristic symptoms, it’s a good bet that you suffer from migraines. The booklet on headaches describes the common kinds and their treatment. Readers can ob-tain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 901W, Box
536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Cana-da with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Many of my friends take aspirin for the prevention of a heart attack or stroke. I decided I should join them. Is this a wise move? -- K.H.
ANSWER: Aspirin and similar drugs are the rule for prevention of heart attacks and certain strokes. The aspirin dose in greatest use is 81 mg -- low-dose aspirin. Three different regimens for the prevention of stroke are acceptable: Plavix, aspirin or aspirin combined with sustained-release dipyridam-ole. The aspirin-dipyridamole combination comes in one tablet called Aggrenox. Note that these are for prevention of second heart attacks and strokes. For the prevention of a first heart attack or stroke, patients should consult their doctor, who will evaluate each patient’s risk. Based on that, the doc-tor will recommend a regimen that’s appropriate. It’s not a good idea to self-medicate with any medicine. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an or-der form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
Online Banking Grows by Leaps and Bounds Say it isn’t true. Seniors are moving to on-line banking? So says a survey done by the American Bankers Association. For the first time ever, those of us age 55 and older now prefer doing our bank-ing online rather than going to the bank in person or using the mail. It wasn’t just a few of us either. We went from 20 percent of seniors doing banking online in 2010 to a whopping 57 percent in 2011. Part of this, it’s said, is due to the banks now having a long list of requirements to avoid the fees they now charge. In some cases we’re required to have a very large balance in savings or we’re charged a monthly fee to get statements by mail. Doing our banking online is often one of the ways we can save money. Why else do we do it? It’s convenient, es-pecially if we no longer drive or if we live in places with inclement weather. For those of us who are so busy it’s not easy to get to the bank during working hours. Online banking is fast, and a means to easily take care of business in only seconds!. However, that doesn’t mean we’re eager to use our cell phones to conduct bank business. We’re not quite there yet. Computer classes have made us more comfortable pressing keys, but a small cell phone is easily lost. So, what can we do online? We can: in-stantly transfer funds from one account to another, check balances, see if a check has cleared, view our statement and pay bills (and save on stamps). If you want to explore online banking, re-member two key safety steps. Keep good virus pro-tection on your computer, and close your browser after you log out of the bank’s website.
Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot person-ally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Being considerate of your survivors Q: My parents are now in their late 70s and are basically healthy. Dad takes care of the checkbook and finances but groans about handling any details. I am married with three kids, and their only child. I have never asked what their final wishes are because it’s an uncomfortable subject for me. I know next to nothing about their finances or if they even have a will. I feel I should know some of these things, but I’m not sure how to to correctly ap-proach the question. How does one discreetly bring up an uncomfortable subject like this?
A: It is not at all unreasonable for you to want to have this information. The time will eventu-ally come when you’ll need to step in and implement these things, and it is only fair that they should help you be somewhat prepared. It is also understandable that you are reluc-tant to bring the subject up to them. If you don’t want to approach it directly, you might try a roundabout approach. Pick an appropriate time to casually men-tion to your folks that you are thinking of having an attorney draw up either a will or a trust for you and your wife. Tell them that both of you are concerned about what would happen to your estate and your childrens’ entitlements if something happened and you didn’t have one (which, by the way, is a wise thing to do regardless). Ask for their opinions and advice about this and whether they can recommend a good estate attorney whom you might contact. Now you’ve opened the subject for discus-sion, but the focus is centered on your situation and not theirs. When presented this way it’s almost im-possible for the subject not to naturally seque into what their own plans are regarding the preparations and provisions that they have made for you. You shouldn’t even have to ask the question; your father should now feel almost compelled to volunteer that information himself. Use the opportunity to suggest to your fa-ther that it would be beneficial to both your mother and to you if he would make a complete list of all their household financial affairs should he no longer be able to handle them. The list should include all of their financial accounts including real estate hold-ings and location of deeds, the financial institutions involved, account numbers, passwords, names of at-torneys, brokers, financial advisors and their contact information, the location of his insurance policy and will (assuming he has one), powers of attorney and any other important records and documents. The list should also include of all the house-hold bills due monthly, quarterly and annually, the location of their home safe and bank safe deposit box and a brief description of what they hold, lock combinations and where keys are kept. He can even
● On March 23, 1836, in hopes of keep-ing pace with the furious march of technolo-gy, the U.S. Mint unveils its first steam-pow-ered press. The new-fangled contraption helped crank out coins more efficiently.
● On March 25, 1911, at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York’s Lower East Side, a fire quickly engulfs the factory and claims 146 lives, mostly young women. Because management had locked the exit doors, many of the garment workers either expired from asphyxiation or leapt from windows -- a fatal, 10-story fall. The fac-tory’s owners were eventually found guilty on charges of manslaughter.
● On March 20, 1920, Bugatti delivers its first 16-valve car to a customer in Switzer-land. The Bugatti was a symbol of wealth and status, and its cars were equipped with massive racing engines. The renowned American dancer Isadora Duncan was rid-ing in a Bugatti when her trademark long scarf caught in a rear wheel of the vehicle, and she was instantly strangled to death.
● On March 22, 1947, President Harry Truman issues an executive decree estab-lishing a sweeping loyalty investigation of federal employees in every department and agency. The program uncovered only a few employees whose loyalty could be “reason-ably” doubted.
● On March 19, 1952, the one-millionth Jeep is produced. The name “Jeep” is re-portedly derived from the Army’s 1941 re-quest that car manufacturers develop a “General Purpose” vehicle. “G.P.” turned to “Jeep” somewhere along the (battle) line.
● On March 21, 1971, “The Andromeda Strain,” the first movie to use computer ani-mation, opens. The sci-fi thriller, featuring scientists racing against time and an alien virus, was the first of many films to be made from a Michael Crichton book.
● On March 24, 1989, the worst oil spill in U.S. territory begins when the supertank-er Exxon Valdez runs aground on a reef in Prince William Sound in Alaska. An es-timated 11 million gallons of oil eventually spilled into the water, polluting more than 700 miles of coastline.

keep this list confidential, but placed with his attor-ney in a sealed envelope to be opened either by you or your mother in the event of his death. In short, the list should be inclusive enough allow your mother and/or you to step in and handle all of your household and financial affairs with a min-imum amount of confusion and stress. Unfortunately, most of us, like you, find this subject quite uncomfortable, and one we either con-sciously or subconsiously wish to ignore. But the so-bering reality is that it is one we can’t avoid and will eventually have to face, like it or not. Sadly, there are a great number of people who die “intestate,” with no will at all, or without a list of information for their loved ones to rely on. This not only leaves the disbursement of their estate up to probate court and the judgment of the state, but it causes a tremendous amount of agony and anguish for the surviving family members. And who wants to have their memory tainted with a sense of bitterness! Doug Mayberry makes the most of life in a Southern California retirement community. Contact him at [email protected]. Ornate Card Stands Evoke Rituals From Victorian Era Q: This antique stand was given to my mother in 1959 by her 92-year-old friend. The ornate stand is silver and holds a frosted glass dish. The overall height is approximately 9 inch-es and both pieces are in very good condition. I have no idea what it was used for. I hope you can help to identify it, as well as its vintage and value.
A: You have a silver plated Victorian card stand used for holding visitors’ calling cards. La-dies would leave their personal cards at homes to welcome newcomers or to leave a message. The ornate stands were often scrolled and were usually triple or quadruple plated. Cupids and birds usually adorned the frames. Your stand was made in the late 1800s and would probably be worth $225 to $325.
Q: This mark is on a set of china that belonged to my mother. She received the set as a wedding present in 1937. Some of the pieces also have the words in a triangle “Warranted 22 KT. Gold -- NC. Co.” The dishes are decorated with blue and yellow flowers against a white background and have gold bands. It is a service for 8 and in perfect condition. My mother died over 20 years ago and left no information on the history of the set. I found it in a cabinet after she died and just vaguely remembered her using it when I was a small child. Thank you so much for any information you might be able to give me.
A: Pope Gosser China was located in Coshocton, Ohio, from 1902 to 1958. Through the
years, they used a variety of marks. Many of their patterns can be identified; nevertheless, there are many that remain a mystery. In 1958, due to the high cost of manufacturing and the affordability of imports, the company closed. Similar services for 8 sets are selling in the range of $175 to $275.
Q: What can you tell me about a glass milk bottle I recently found in a building that is being remodeled in Connecticut? It is pint size, clear glass with the following words on the side “It’s McGough’s Country Fresh Milk.”
A: Glass milk bottles are collectible. I found no information on McGough’s Dairy. Most pint size bottles from just about any diary have a value of $5 to $15. Collectors that find bottles from the World War II era with war slogans on the glass are even more collectible. They are in the $125 to $150 range.

with chocolate buttercream and frosted with yet more chocolate, then decorated with chocolate branches to resemble a tree log.
• In 1832, Prince Metternich of Austria was expecting important guests for dinner and gave his head chef the task of creating something new and sumptuous for dessert. The only trouble was that the chef was sick, leaving a 16-year-old apprentice in charge. Young Franz Sacher set to work inventing a chocolate sponge cake cut into three layers, filled with apricot jam and frosted with a rich icing. The dessert became known as Sachertorte and endures today as Vienna’s most famous specialty, with its recipe a carefully guarded secret.
• A 1906 romance novel was the source of the name of the lady Baltimore cake. The story, set in post-Civil War Charleston, mentioned the title character serving the dessert, a creation of tall white cake layers with a filling of chopped nuts and candied fruits, frosted with boiled white icing. The actual recipe was developed by two Baltimore women who opened a tea room after the success of the novel. These days, this cake is a popular one for Southern weddings.
• Another Southern custom is the Groom’s Cake, a separate wedding cake traditionally served to unmarried women attending the wedding. This confection, much smaller than the regular wedding cake, is taken home and placed under the lady’s pillow, with the hope that she’ll dream of her future husband. ■

Shoulders and arms work togetherMaking a conscious effort to turn the shoul-ders fully on the backswing can lead to tension in the arms as well as an overuse of the shoul-ders. This can affect your tempo and timing as well as lead to an incorrect swing path. Take your focus off your shoulders by trying the fol-lowing drill:
swing. This will require your arms to be ex-tremely relaxed and it will feel like they are actually collapsing at the top. Then at the fin-ish of your swing let the shaft come to rest on your left shoulder. You will find that your shoulders will respond to your arms and you will still accomplish a full shoulder turn both on your backswing and follow-through. (Keep in mind this is a drill and will feel awkward at first). This will not only help you feel what it’s like to get a proper turn without over swinging, but it will help with your tempo as well.
Take somepractice swings resting the shaft of theclub on your right shoulder, just at the base of your neckon the back
