Let’s see what else is on the calendar for this time of year. • Dictionary Day is October 16, commemorating the birthday of NoahWebster.Webster was a 1778 graduate of Yale University, who began compiling America’s first dictionary of the English language at age 43. His work wasn’t completed until he had compiled over 70,000 entries by age 70. Among other inclusions, he was responsible for changing some of the old English spellings, such as “colour” to “color”, “musick” to “music,” and many other spellings we now consider archaic. • The National Mole Day Foundation urges you to celebrate National Mole Day on October 23. Does that mean it’s time to be kind to those furry little creatures that burrow tunnels through your lawn? Not at all! This is a day to get excited about a basic measuring unit in chemistry -- the mole, and, by all means, to memorize Avogadro’s number, 6.024 x 10 to the 23rd power. This, as we all know, is the formula that defines the amount of atomic mass units in a gram. It’s the amount of a substance that equals the quantity containing as many units as there are atoms in 0.012 kg of Carbon-12. Actually, it might be easier to be kind to the tunnelling type of mole creature! • October is a big month for monuments. • It was 19th-century American humorist Josh Billings who made the following sage obser-vation: “Don’t mistake pleasure for happi-ness. They’re a different breed of dog.”

• Those who study such things say that the immortal bard, William Shakespeare, used a grand total of 17,677 words in his works. (That must have been a tedious calculation.) They also say that fully one-tenth of those words had never been used in writing before.

• If you’re like the average American, you eat approximately 10 pounds of chocolate every year.

• You might be surprised to learn that the first automobile insurance policy was sold way back in 1897. One Gilbert J. Loomis of Day-ton, Ohio, was evidently concerned about the potential damage that could be done by his newly acquired car, so he got general liability protection in case driving his car resulted in someone’s death or injury, or in case prop-erty was damaged.

• High-quality opals can be more valuable than diamonds.

• If you are of a certain age, you might re-member that in the mid-1960s, root beer-fla-vored milk was available for purchase. Then again, you might not; the marketing experi-ment was a flop and the product was pulled in short order.

• When people who are blind from birth dream, they don’t see images; instead, they hear and feel the dream. For this reason, it’s said that their dreams can seem much more real. Those who become blind later in life do see images in their dreams, but the images fade the longer they live without sight.

• In the early 1900s, the average American got about nine hours of sleep every night. (I presume that statistic excludes the parents of new babies, who have been sleep-deprived since time immemorial.) ***

The Savage Truth on Money

by Terry Savage

Q: I am heartbroken that Fox has can-celed “America’s Most Wanted.” I’ve watched the show since the beginning, and I am so proud of all the good John Walsh and his crew have done to “get those dirtbags off the streets”! Is there an address for Fox that we can write to, hopefully to change their minds? -- Gertrude T., via e-mail

A: I have good news for you, Gertrude. Lifetime Television recently announced that it has picked up John Walsh’s top crime-fighting show, which will return for its 25th season later this year. While there is not an exact airdate scheduled as of this writing, keep an eye on this column for updates as I get them. Also, check online at www.celebrityex-traonline.com as December gets closer for my exclu-sive interview with John Walsh about the resurrec-tion of “AMW” on Lifetime. I’m sure we’ll also talk about all those “creeps” and “slimeballs” that John will be trying to capture this upcoming season. ***

Q: I loved the TV show “Lost” and have been wondering about the man who played Sawyer. He is such a good actor. Do you have any info on what he’s doing now? -- Janet R., New-ark, Ohio

A: The handsome Josh Holloway, 42, has

been keeping pretty busy since “Lost” end-ed last year. You can see him again soon on the big screen in “Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol.” In the movie, which hits the-aters on Dec. 21, Josh plays Trevor Hanaway, a member of Ethan Hunt’s (played by Tom Cruise) Mission Im-possible force, along with Ving Rhames and Academy Award-nominee Jeremy Renner. ***

Q: I really liked your idea a few months back of having Beth Littleford (of “Crazy Stupid Love”) playing James Spader’s wife in “The Of-fice” this season, but now I hear Maura Tierney has been tapped for the part. Is that true? If so, what do you think about that? - Holly T., via e-mail

A: While Maura is no stranger to comedy -- she co-starred on “News Radio” from 1995-99 -- she usually plays the straight (wo)man, which is exactly what James Spader needs, now that we are getting a better idea of what his character, Robert California, is like. So now I make this modest proposal: How about we cast Beth as Robert’s Scranton mistress? Her offbeat and hilarious sense of humor, along with her improv skills and deadpan humor, would make her the perfect “secret lover” for the new boss, as well as an excellent foil for the rest of the cast. Are you listening, Paul Lieberstein and crew? ***

Q: I really like the reality/survival se-ries, “The Colony,” on the Discovery Channel.

When will the third season start? -- Jane R., Phila-delphia

A: According to a Discovery Channel rep-resentative, currently there are no plans to bring “The Colony” back in 2011. I’ll keep checking and keep you posted as I learn any more details for 2012.

Rally Shows Why You Keep a Steady Hand What a difference a day makes, or even a week. It was at the beginning of this month -- Oct. 3 -- that the Dow Jones industrial average closed at 10,655. An early sell-off the following day pushed stocks into bear market territory, with an intra-day decline of 20 percent from the highs of the year. But that day, the market rebounded to close with a gain. Ever since, the bears have been licking their wounds. A week later, the market had gained 7.3 percent from that day’s closing loss. The following Monday, the Dow rallied 330 points, to a closing at 11,433.18. An excellent demonstration of how futile -- and even danger-ous -- it is to base your investment strategy on one day’s headlines, whether on the upside or on the downside. There’s been no substantial change in the market-moving news. Yes, there is hope that Eu-rope will get its act together and limit the damage caused by Greece. But those hopes could eas-ily be dashed. The latest U.S. economic reports, especially those related to jobs, continue to show anemic growth -- but at least not negative num-bers. Quarterly earnings reports will be revealed this week, likely showing the same number of sur-prises to the upside as to the downside. In short, the current market is ruled by emo-tion. And it’s the emotions that are volatile, not the economic reports. The Dow is within 150 points of where it started this year. And that difference could

be made up tomorrow. But in between, according to Dow Jones Indexes, so far this year the market has traveled 20,301.98 points, if you total each day’s closing change! You can save a lot of wear and tear on your emotions and your wallet by keeping your eye on your long-term goals. And that’s the Savage Truth.

Refinancing a Mortgage Re-quires Homework Dear Mary: My wife and I are thinking of refinancing our home mortgage. We have 17 years remaining on our current mortgage, and we’re both 54 years old. We have no debt other than the mortgage and our cars. What are your thoughts on paying a credit repair company to clean up our credit? We’ve been married for six years, and we’re unsure how our ex-spouses’ credit may still affect us. We want a better interest rate and would like to drop the mortgage insur-ance. Before we tackle refinancing, we would like to have the best credit score possible. -- S.L., email

Dear S.L.: Before you do a thing, both of you need to order your individual free credit reports from www.AnnualCreditReport.com and your credit scores from www.MyFico.com. You need to know for certain what you are deal-ing with. You can dispute negative items on your credit reports that are factually incorrect, but not those that, unfortunately, are true. I would discourage you from paying some fly-by-night credit repair outfit that promises to “clean” your report of negative marks. There is

nothing they can do for you that you cannot do for yourself. Don’t fall for their scams, which usually involve committing fraud or trying to overwhelm the credit bureaus with disputes that often result in only temporary improvement, if that. A better course is to continue using credit responsibly and paying your bills on time. Over time, provided no new negative information is being reported to your credit files, your credit will begin to improve, and that will be reflected in your credit scores. In the meantime, contact your current lend-er and several others, too. Find out what credit scores they are requiring to refinance mortgages, how much equity you’ll need to avoid private mort-gage insurance or PMI (typically lenders require least 20 percent equity) and their current interest rates. That will give you a good idea of where you are and where you need to be to refinance into a more favorable mortgage. I hope for you that you can do this before interest rates begin to rise. ***

Dear Mary: How does one decide when it makes better sense to buy a “new” car than to keep fixing the old one? My car is in decent condition, but it’s starting to have wear-and-tear issues. -- Cyndi, Maine

Dear Cyndi: All cars require repairs as they age. But that doesn’t meant it’s time to trade it in for a new batch of big car payments. Today’s typical car payment of about $400 a month will more than cover a lot of repairs and should keep your car going for many more years. Here’s my suggestion: Set up a sav-ings account into which you faithfully make $400 monthly payments to yourself in the months you aren’t paying for repairs to your current vehicle

(which will be most months). In five years, you’ll have saved about $24,000, which should be plenty to buy another car with all cash. That’s an incentive that should keep you plenty happy to drive this car until its wheels fall off!

Act To Bring Down Puppy Mills Puppy mills have been around for more than half a century. In the post-World War II boom, more disposable income and leisure time met with farm-ers actively searching for alternative “crops” -- a col-lision that led to the phenomenon of the retail dog. Pet stores sprouted and multiplied as money-minded individuals realized the irresistible appeal of “that puppy in the window.” With this new industry, along with previ-ously existing ventures dealing with living crea-tures, came abuses that necessitated new regulation. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Animal Welfare Act, which became -- and re-mains -- the minimally acceptable standard for ani-mal treatment and care. The USDA is the primary party charged with the enforcement of the AWA. By all reasonable stan-dards, its performance has been grossly uninspired, particularly in the area of commercial cat and dog breeding -- a.k.a. puppy mills. Like a lot of legislation, the AWA came with a loophole: It allows commercial breeders who sell puppies online and directly to the public to escape licensing and regulation -- a problem that was com-pounded by the advent and ensuing popularity of the Internet. Pending in Congress today, the 2011 Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety Act closes that loop-hole. It brings all commercial dog breeders under federal oversight, and it mandates daily exercise for puppy mill dogs -- most of whom never see the out-side of a cage. “The ASPCA has seen first-hand the un-speakable cruelty and horrific conditions of puppy mills,” said Cori Menkin, senior director of the pup-py mills campaign at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “The existing reg-ulatory loophole allows many commercial breeders to operate without a license and without any inspec-tion -- meaning they are not accountable to anyone for their breeding and care standards.” “Thousands of animal lovers across the country are bringing the issue of puppy mills direct-ly to the president’s attention,” said Melanie Kahn, senior director of the Puppy Mills Campaign for the Humane Society of the United States. “The petition asks the president to close a loophole that permits

Cardiac Rehabilitation Key to Life After Attack Until the early 1970s, people who sur-vived a heart attack were admitted to the hospital, stayed in bed for two to three weeks -- not even allowed to use a bedside commode -- and then spent another three months in bed at home. The goal was to “rest the heart” and give it a chance to fully recover. Exercise was discour-aged, and many with heart disease were referred to as “cardiac cripples” -- reluctant to exert any energy and frightened of any rigorous movement. Their lives were miserable. How times have changed. Today, imme-diately after the diagnosis of a heart attack, an angiogram is performed to identify the extent of the heart attack; the blocked vessel is immedi-ately opened and, in some circumstances, cardiac artery bypass surgery can be done within hours. The next day, patients are encouraged to begin movement, get out of bed as soon as possi-ble and are sent home within a few days. Similarly, patients admitted to the hospital with severe heart failure are encouraged to begin physical activity as soon after beginning treatment as possible. After being discharged to their homes, patients are advised to begin exercising, and many are referred for cardiac rehabilitation. These programs involve supervised exercise programs, often under the guidance of a physical therapist. Rehabilitation therapy is three times a week and involves a one-hour program of stretching, aerobic

activity and a cool-down. In many rehabilitation programs, the patient’s heart is constantly moni-tored to assure that the rate does not increase excessively or become irregular. Sadly, less than 30 percent of patients referred for rehabilitation participate and even fewer complete the 12-week program. In addition to patients who have had heart attacks and open-heart surgery, anyone who has developed increas-ing shortness of breath due to heart disease or heart failure should be considered a candidate for cardiac rehabilitation. New information published in the journal Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Associ-ation has shown that rehabilitation not only allows the heart to return to normal function more rapidly after exercise, but also doubles the chances of survival. In addition, cardiac rehabilitation im-proves quality of life and exercise capacity. Begin-ning with cardiac rehabilitation, patients who have had a heart attack can eventually become very active and even complete a marathon. This study followed 1,070 patients referred for cardiac rehabilitation; 75 percent were men, with an average age of 61. The most important measurement was determining how quickly the heart rate returned to normal after exercise. At the start, about 50 percent had an abnormal heart recovery rate after exercise. Even though diag-nosed with significant heart disease, the recovery rate was normal in the remainder. In order to be defined as normal, the heart rate had to decrease by a minimum of 12 beats in the first minute after stopping exercise. An exercise stress test was also done before and after completing the study. Of those who had an abnormal heart rate recovery at the start, 41 percent had a normal recovery by the end of the program. And of those who were normal at the outset, 90 percent remained that way. The 10 percent who did not were thought to have worsen-ing heart disease. The patients who completed the program were followed for eight years, during which time 197 of the 1,041 patients died. Most importantly, those who had an abnormal heart rate recovery after exercise at the end of the study were twice as likely to die as those who did not. Being diagnosed with heart disease is a wake-up call to live a healthier life. Many stop smoking, begin exercising and try to lose weight and eat right. Some succeed, but for most, gains are temporary and sooner or later they become sedentary again. And the more sedentary, the less fit your body and your heart. Add to this heart disease and, sadly, the ability of the heart to respond or recover from even minor movement will be slowed. Keeping the heart fit by appropriate exercise will almost certainly keep you alive longer as well as make your life better. Add to this eating right and taking the appropriate medications to reduce the risk of further problems, and life expec-tancy will be as long as or longer than expected. large-scale, commercial breeders who sell puppies online and directly to the public to escape basic over-sight and minimal animal care standards.” These animal welfare behemoths, along with hundreds of like-minded organizations, are calling on the Obama administration to help put an end to the puppy mill industry. On the local level, cities and municipalities such as West Hollywood, Calif., and Austin, Texas, have out-and-out banned the retail sale of dogs and cats. Here are some ways you can help: -- Email your U.S. representatives and sena-tors today and ask them to support and co-sponsor the PUPS Act. -- Visit wh.gov/gdb to add your name to the White House petition. -- Do not buy food, supplies or animals from any store or outlet that sells companion animals. -- Do not order a dog or cat off a website. There are many valuable websites that list profiles of dogs and cats that are in need of a good home, including the sites of most local animal shel-ters, rescue groups and sanctuaries. In almost all cases, an in-person visit is -- and should be -- required. Note: The difference between paying an adoption fee and buying a dog is huge. An adoption fee helps subsidize the cost of shelter and basic care for homeless and rescued animals. When you buy a dog from a pet store or order one off a website, you are providing life-sustaining revenue to an industry that breeds animals solely for profit and makes the goal of no more homeless pets that much harder to reach. Tips on Filing for Social Secu-rity Disability Benefits

About a month ago, I answered some ques-tions from people who were wondering if I thought they might be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. I essentially told them that the only way they would know for sure is to actually apply for such benefits. I took flack from some readers who thought my answer encouraged an “entitlement society” where everybody is trying to mooch some kind of financial windfall off the government. I answered those charges in a previous column. But I got many more comments and ques-tions from readers asking for my help in applying for Social Security disability. In a moment, I’ll offer some tips for people who plan to sign up for benefits. But first, I need to provide some general information about the disability program. Disability benefits were added to the So-cial Security program in 1956. A separate funding structure was established to pay for the program. A small percentage of the Social Security payroll tax (currently 0.9 percent) is earmarked to fund the dis-ability program. Those monies are collected and dis-bursed from a trust fund (the Disability Insurance Trust Fund) that is managed separately from the re-tirement fund (formally known as the Old Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund). Many people mistakenly confuse Social Se-curity disability with the Supplemental Security In-come (SSI) disability program. They are totally dif-ferent government programs. SSI is welfare benefit payable to people with low income and assets. It’s funded by general income tax revenues, not Social Security taxes. Both programs just happen to be run by the same agency: the Social Security Administra-tion. It doesn’t help that SSA refers to one as SSDI (Social Security disability insurance) and to the other as SSID (Supplemental Security Income disability). The law defines “disability” this way: It says that in order to qualify for Social Security disability benefits, you must have an impairment that is so se-vere that it’s expected to keep you from doing any kind of work for at least 12 months. Or the condition must be so bad that it is considered terminal. Throughout the insurance and pension in-dustry, that is known as a very strict definition of dis-ability. Despite all the rumors that exist about dead-beats and fakers on the disability dole, the opposite is more often the case: There are lots of people who would be considered disabled and eligible for many other government and private disability plans who do not qualify for Social Security disability payments. Eligibility is also restricted because of the work and tax-paying requirement. As a general rule, a person must have worked and paid Social Security taxes for at least 10 years to qualify for Social Secu-rity disability. And some of that work must have been recent. The law specifically states that you must have

worked and paid taxes in five of the last 10 years. (Those work and tax-paying rules are less stringent for younger workers who become disabled.) So if you have an impairment that keeps you from working and if you meet those basic require-ments for disability benefits, here are some tips that will help you when you want to file a claim. Tip 1: You can begin the filing process on-line at the Social Security Administration website: SocialSecurity.gov. Just click on “Apply online for dis-ability benefits” right on the home page. You can also call the SSA at 800-772-1213 and make an appoint-ment to file in person at a Social Security office. You have the option of filing your claim over the phone. Tip 2: One of the first questions on the dis-ability application form essentially asks this: “What is wrong with you, and how does this impairment prevent you from working?” Answer this question as thoroughly as possible. The inability to work (not just the impairment itself) is the key to qualifying for benefits. You should describe in as much detail as possible how your impairment (or impairments -- see Tip 3) impact your ability to do your job. Tip 3: List all physical and mental problems you have, no matter how insignificant they seem. Don’t simply write down the condition that you con-sider your primary disability. It’s frequently a combi-nation of disabilities that qualifies someone for ben-efits. Tip 4: A big section of the disability ques-tionnaire seeks information about your medical sources. Thoroughly list the names, addresses and phone numbers of all of the hospitals, clinics, doctors and other professionals who have treated you. The government needs medical records to determine whether your condition is severe enough to qualify you for benefits. And, of course, those records will come from the people you list on the application form. I can tell you from experience that nothing slows up a disability claim more than the inability to get records from medical sources. Tip 5: The Social Security Administration actually contracts with a state agency -- known as Disability Determination Services in most states -- to make disability decisions. Shortly after you file, your claim will be sent to your state DDS. Call SSA and get the DDS phone number. Then, call DDS to find

out the name of the analyst who has been assigned to your case. Make that person your new best friend! If you have a Social Security question, Tom Mar-genau has the answer. Contact him at [email protected]. As a child, I took only one medicine, and did well. Now I have a number of medicines and inhalers, and I’m confused. Will you sim-plify asthma for me? It isn’t the same as it used to be. Do you think I have developed allergies that brought it back? -- H.F.

ANSWER: In the more developed countries of the world, around 15 percent of children and 12 percent of adults suffer from asthma. Asthma re-solves for many children as they reach adolescence, but it can come back. Adults also can develop asthma for the first time. It’s not strictly a childhood prob-lem. Cough, wheezing and shortness of breath are the signs of an asthma attack. Asthma comes in attacks separated by periods when the asthmatic is well. The goal of treatment is to extend the well peri-ods and shorten any attacks, something that wasn’t all that possible when you had only one medicine as a child. The basis of an attack is constriction of the breathing tubes, the airways, the bronchi. Along with narrowed airways, inflammation strikes them, and they fill with thick mucus. The combination makes it difficult to get air into and out of the lungs. Exhaling is particularly difficult. Triggers for asthma attacks include cold air, exercise, viral infections like the common cold and allergens. If your doctor believes that allergens are leading to your asthma attacks, then testing for them is worthwhile. For many, allergy doesn’t lead to bouts of asthma. Exercise as a trigger needs some clarifica-

tion. Everyone gets short of breath when exercising, but recovery is quick, within five minutes. Breath-lessness brought on by an exercise-induced asthma attack lasts much longer, 30 to 60 minutes. An attack of asthma often can be stopped in its tracks with an inhaler medicine like albuterol (Ventolin and Proventil). For longer control, corti-sone inhalers or inhalers containing cortisone and a long-acting drug that expands airways keeps a per-son attack-free. Advair is an example. The booklet on asthma has a more detailed explanation of the common illness and its treat-ments. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 602W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and ad-dress. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ***

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What can you tell me about glossopharyngeal? My doctor says I have it. He has me on medicine for it. -- K.L.

ANSWER: The glossopharyngeal (GLOSS-oh-fair-IN-gee-ul) nerve is one of the 12 cranial nerves, nerves that come directly from the brain. They are the nobility of the nerve kingdom. The glossopharyngeal nerve is the nerve of taste and the nerve that activates some throat muscles. Glossopharyngeal neuralgia consists of epi-sodes of knife-like pain in the throat and back of the tongue. Swallowing, chewing and even talking can provoke an attack. Carbamazepine, gabapentin, phe-nytoin and valproic acid are some of the drugs used to curtail such attacks. Surgically freeing the nerve from an encircling and pulsating artery is another treatment for this condition. ***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

National Memory Screening Day Mark your calendar: Nov. 15, a Tuesday, is National Memory Screening Day, put on by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. A news release issued by Alzheimer’s Disease International says that there could be 28 million people in the world with dementia -- but no diagnosis yet. The screening events provide free memory screenings using tasks and questions that can detect problems early. Tests will check memory, thinking and language skills. While the tests don’t give a true diagnosis, they can provide indications that a medical exam is needed. Meanwhile, there is a possible Alzheimer’s vaccine on the horizon. In the disease, the amyloid protein stays in the brain and turns into plaque, which causes problems with the nerves that trans-port information through the brain. Researchers are looking at a way to stop the body from produc-ing too much of the amyloid by targeting the recep-tors that move it into the brain. At this point only small animals have been used in the research, but the results are promising enough that the next step is to move into large-animal research. To learn more about next month’s free memory screenings, go online to www.nation-almemoryscreening.org, or call 866-AFA-8484. Online you just need to click on your state and a list of locations will appear. You’ll need to sign up in advance to ensure a spot. If you’ve been experiencing memory prob-lems or if it runs in the family, be sure to tell your doctor. Or if you just want a baseline test for future reference, the screening can help with that, too. Remember, a memory problem might not be Al-zheimer’s. It could easily be something as simple as a vitamin deficiency.

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

NEW YORK — I went to New York to a Broadway show and found out that Harry Potter can sing and dance! Daniel Radcliffe is singing and danc-ing his way into the hearts of Ameri-cans in “How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” until the end of the year, when Nick Jonas of The Jonas Brothers takes over. Former “Night Court” and five-time Emmy winner John Larroquette won a Tony Award for the show. Anderson Cooper also is listed as a cast mem-ber. He narrates the book “How to Succeed in Business” for Radcliff’s character. Isn’t CNN and a new talk show enough?

Daniel worked hard to win over “Harry Potter” fans, but he works even harder to win over experienced theatergoers ... and succeeds. Audi-ences love him!

***While dining at Onieal’s on Grand

Street, I was surprised to see 40 wom-en arrive at once and found myself in the middle of the “Sex and the City” tour! People pay $44 to ride a bus around to New York locations where the show and movie were shot. In addition to Onieal’s, which doubled as Steve and Aiden’s bar, Scout, in three or four shows, they are taken to the site of Carrie and Big’s wedding rehearsal dinner; The Pleasure Chest, where Charlotte bought her “rab-bit”; and several Greenwich Village boutiques where the girls shopped, to name a few stops. Three gals from London found the tour online and said it was a must see for them — even in a heavy rainstorm. Their favorite stop? “Onieal’s,” one said, “because we drink Cosmos like the girls on the show did!”

I went to see “The Addams Fam-ily,” which stars Brooke Shields as Morticia and “Cheers” alum Roger Rees as Gomez Addams. The musi-

cal, based on characters in The New Yorker Magazine and TV series, gives the audience sight gags, humor and a chance to enjoy Brooke Shields’ strong singing voice and flair for com-edy. The show runs ‘til New Year’s Eve, then goes on tour. It’s great fun.

Also saw “Billy Elliot,” with songs by Elton John. Five boys rotate as Billy (in my performance Joseph

Harrington played the title role). Audiences enthusiastically applaud throughout the show and give several standing ovations to whichever boy is playing Billy. The story is about a Northern England coal miner’s son who wants to be a ballet dancer. It starts out as a tragedy and ends up a feel-good show. It won’t be long before it becomes a favorite school play.

After riding clean, efficient subways and buying first-rate theater tickets near Times Square for half off, I can happily say, “I took a bite out of the Big Apple, and it tasted really good!”

are considering one? It is time to have that dreaded talk. Tell her you feel something serious is wrong with your rela-tionship, and ask her if she feels the same way. It is time to face the music. Whatever your questions and answers reveal will determine your decisions. If an affair is going on, what does each of you want to do about it? If the answer is to continue your mar-riage, you may need to change your work schedule, seek professional counseling or consider divorce. Try to understand your issues. Do not rush to judg-ment. The truth is perhaps everything is OK and will continue to be so. We all change on an ongoing basis. Perhaps her concern is she would like you to be home more. Why Write Your Autobiogra-phy?

Q: As a widow, with many memories, I have been thinking seriously about writing the story of my life. I was adopted, had two failed marriages and have experienced and am still grieving over the accidental death of one of our sons. I have not discussed many of the details with my family. Although I finished high school, I do not feel qualified to write my story. Should I even bother to do so, how could I?

A: Go for it! Why? Because it is important for your future generations, and you are the only one left to tell the story. Explain how you felt, and how you were able to struggle and survive it. Grab a notebook and begin writing. What do you remember from your childhood, adoles-cence, education and fears for your future? Did you have siblings? Why did your adoptive parents choose you? Select photos from your family files. Write the names of whom you can remember on the photos’ backsides. Do not try to write a best seller. The mem-oir’s value is that is written from your heart. Include both the good and bad times. How did you face the challenges of being an adopted child? Locate a member of your family or friend who uses a computer, and ask them to type it for you. Try to surprise your family with a copy as their holiday gift. I suspect they will feel it is the best gift that they have ever received!

Q: My wife and I have a twentieth an-niversary coming up. My job requires me to travel often and frequently, even on weekends. However, now I suspect there is another man involved in her life. As we do not have children and I am not often socially involved when I am home, I am not certain she does have another lover. However, I feel something is seriously wrong, and she may be seeing another guy. How should I handle this?

A: A strong and happy marriage is based on affection and trust. If either is found to be miss-ing in your relationship, this trauma will become a major confrontation. Why do you suspect she is having an affair? Could you yourself be having or

By Samantha MazzottaA Plumber’s Snake? What’s That?

Q: One thing my uncle rec-ommended when I moved

into my recently purchased house is something called a plumber’s snake. Just what is that? I presume it’s for getting into pipes or some-thing. — Tammy in Des Moines, Iowa

A: You’re right, Tammy, it does have something to do with

getting into pipes. Specifically, a plumber’s snake — more profes-sionally known as a hand auger — is a handheld tool used for clear-ing clogs in drain lines. It consists of a flexible tube with a spring coil on one end, attached to a hand crank at the other end. The tube is inserted into the affected drain until the clog is reached; then the hand crank is turned so that the clogging material gets caught in the spring coil and is pulled out along with the tubing.

The beauty of the hand auger — there’s also a larger version called a closet auger or toilet auger, specifi-cally for toilets — is that it can clear many types of clogs without using chemicals to break up the material or using a drill that could break through the pipe.

Using the hand auger takes a little bit of practice. It’s not hard to use, but you’re fishing blind through the drainpipe, and figuring out the dif-ference between a bend in the pipe and the actual clog can take a few tries. So, for example, let’s say you’re clearing a clog in a sink drain. You’ve either removed the trap (the U-bend pipe under the sink) or, if the trap has this, unscrewed the bolt at the bottom of the trap and let the water drain into a bucket. But the clog doesn’t clear (meaning it’s a little further back in the drain line). With the trap removed or the drain bolt unscrewed:

—Loosen the auger lock (the bolt

sticking up at the feeder end of the auger) and feed the cable into the drain line.

—When you meet resistance, find out if you’re simply at a bend in the pipe. Feed out a few inches more cable so you have some extra stick-ing out of the pipe. Tighten down the auger lock. Slowly turn the auger handle clockwise, pushing slightly. If it’s a bend in the line, the resistance will stop and you can continue feed-ing cable.

—If the resistance doesn’t let up, you may have located a clog. Turn

the handle a few more times to try and snag the clog material. Then, loosen the auger lock. Continue turning the handle clockwise to reel in the cable.

—If you meet solid resistance and then the cable slowly feeds in, with continuous resistance, you likely have a soap clog. Slowly continue to bore through the soap clog until resis-tance lessens. Then, retrieve the cable by loosening the auger lock and turn-ing the handle clockwise.

Once you’ve taken care of the clog, reconnect the trap. Run hot water through the pipe, which will flush out loose debris or help break up that soap clog.

Vet Uncovers Huge Medical-Claims ScamWe should all give big thumbs-up,

as well as a mega thank you, to dis-abled Vietnam veteran Richard West for uncovering a massive medical-claims scam.

It started with a trip to the dentist where West, of Tuckerton, N.J., was told he’d maxed out his Medicaid benefits. Didn’t make sense to West, so he checked his records. What fol-lowed was a seven-year effort to expose the truth: The 40-state Maxim Healthcare Services toted up $61 mil-lion in scammed money for claims to Medicaid and the Department of Vet-erans Affairs. In some cases, the bills were falsified; in other cases, the bills were for care that wasn’t provided.

No one in the federal government would listen. Eventually, West had to hire an attorney and file a federal law-suit. That finally got their attention.

With fines and reimbursements, Maxim has been nailed for $150 mil-lion. Of this, $20 million is criminal penalty, the VA is getting $8.4 mil-lion, the federal government is get-ting $70 million, and $60 million is going back to the 40-plus states that incurred losses. West himself is get-ting $15.4 million as his reward for his whistleblower efforts. Which is as it should be.

Whether you’re getting a little care or a lot of care, check your records. Keep a calendar of medical appoint-ments, the dates you get treatment or the times a health worker comes to your home. If you see something wrong on the bills, call the VA hotline as a start. Now they’re sure to listen. Then call your state’s Attorney Gen-eral office.

If you want to read the United State Attorney’s Office press release, go to www.justice.gov/usao/nj/index.html and put Maxim Healthcare Services in the search box.

Antique Dinnerware Serves as Family Treasure

Q: Enclosed you will find pictures of a set of dishes that I have. There are ap-proximately 70 to 80 pieces in the set, which includes serving bowls, platters, a gravy bowl and a teapot. Marked on the back of each dish are the words “England -- W. H. Grindley and Co. -- Windsor Ivory --The Katherine -- Reg. No. 737554.” I purchased this set years ago at an auction for $25. They are a treasure to me and so beautiful. I have been trying to find out more about them and just can’t seem to. I am praying that somehow you will be able to provide informa-tion on their history and a “ball-park” price.

A: W. H. Grindley and Co. has made iron-stone and earthenware in Staffordshire, England, since 1880. “Windsor Ivory” is the name of the shape of dishes that were decorated in a variety of floral design. “The Katherine” is the name of the pattern and “737554” shows the design was registered with the British Government in 1928. Your set of dinnerware would probably be worth $500 to $700. * * *

Q: This is a photo of the mark on the bottom of my silver teapot. I found the teapot at an estate sale, and it is in very good condition. I have never seen any item with so many mark-ings. I’m not even sure what type of metal it is. What can you tell me about my teapot?

A: Gorham Manufacturing Co. made your

teapot for Bunde and Upmeyer a jewelry store in Mil-waukee, Wis. Gorham made silver and silver plate in Providence, R.I from 1865 to 1961. The letters “E P” stand for Electro-Plated silver, and “16 oz.” shows the amount of liquid the teapot holds. The anchor in a shield is a Gor-ham’s mark. Their horn mark was first used in 1919. The rest of the marks are design and manufacturer’s numbers. William and Louis Upmeyer founded Bunde and Upmeyer in the

1880s. They sold high quality silver pieces national-ly to up-scale clients and also to hotels, restaurants and country clubs. The jewelry store closed in 1932. Your teapot was made around 1928 and would probably be worth $75 to $125. * * *

Q: I have a porcelain tea set that has been in my family for a long time. It is a service for four and is decorated with Asian scenes. Marked on the bottom of each piece are the words “Made in Japan.”

How old is it and what is it worth?

A: Your tea set was made around 1921. Many similar sets are selling in the range of $75 to $100. Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Items of a general interest will be answered in this column. Due to the volume of inquiries, she cannot answer individual letters. A late setting in the wrist simply means that you are maintaining the wrist angle that you set at address throughout the entire backswing. This late wrist set keeps the clubhead traveling along the target line for almost the entire backswing. It is not until the backswing is com-plete that the wrist actually sets the grip end onto the target line in the transition from backswing to forward swing. The trademark Nick-laus backswing technique was to extend the clubhead as far back along the target line as possible, which created a huge shoulder turn. Late Wrist Set for Greater Power

A late setting in the wrist basically means that you are maintaining the wrist angle that you set at address throughout the entire backswing. This late wrist set keeps the clubhead traveling along the target line for almost the entire backswing, It is not until the backswing is complete that the wrist actually sets the grip end onto the target line in the transition from backswing to forward swing. This type of motion is created through a bigger shoulder turn and greater extension of the golf club along the target line. The late hinge is a technique that your power hitters use on the pro tour. This type of delayed hinging motion was the trade mark of the great Jack Nicklaus, whose swing thought in the backswing was to try and extend the clubhead back along the target line as far as possible, creating a huge shoulder turn. Nicklaus was one of the greatest power players in the game, and this late wrist set is what enabled him to be so.
