Rampart Street and Esplanade Avenue. The area today still occupies the same 6-by-13-block area that was laid out in 1722. As one of the best-preserved historical neighborhoods in America, visitors to the Quarter often state they feel they have arrived in a foreign country. The lasting influence of the French and Spanish settlers and planners is still very much present.

• The architecture of the Quarter is a mix of mostly French and Spanish styles. Although the Spanish rule of New Orleans was relatively short, from 1762 to 1800, its architectual influence can still be seen, even though there were two major fires during that period that virtually destroyed most of the buildings.

• The first fire, in 1788, leveled 850 structures, and in 1794 a second fire destroyed another 200 buildings. A lot of what had been French architecture was replaced with Spanish-style influences such as wrought iron balconies and central courtyards.

• Many of the buildings existing today date from before New Orleans became part of the United States, although there are some late 19th century and early 20th century buildings in the area as well. Since the 1920s the historic

The French Quarter, also known as the Vieux Carré, is the oldest neighborhood in the city of New Orleans and is also the most historically and culturally significant. Follow along as we learn more about this unique area, with its interesting history, architecture and wonderful food!• When New Orleans (La Nouvelle-Orléans

in French) was founded in 1718 by French-Canadian naval officer Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the city was originally centered on the French Quarter, or the Vieux Carré (“Old Square”) as it was known then. While some still refer to the area by that name, it is more commonly known today as the French Quarter, or simply “The Quarter.”

• The city was first under French rule, then Spanish, and then back to French before being sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The Cabildo, rebuilt in 1799, is where the signing of the Louisiana Purchase took place and is now the main building of the Louisiana State Museum historical complex.

• As New Orleans began expanding out of the original borders, it grew to become an important American port city. People from all over the world were attracted to the unique architecture and culture it offered. Soon a distinct personality that is rich in a unique form of music, food and tradition began to develop.

• Located on some of the highest ground in the area, the French Quarter is centered in downtown New Orleans, where the Mississippi River bends in a crescent shape. Besides the river, the borders are roughly Canal Street,

The French Quarter still occupies the original 6-by-13-block area as it was laid out in 1722.

(and they are easy to grow) you’ll know exactly how your vegetables have been nurtured and treated from seed to mature plant.

• Nussinow also authored a webMD article in which she ranked the most widely eaten greens in the United States by nutrition value. The top 10 are: kale, collards, turnip greens, Swiss chard, spinach, mustard greens, broccoli, red and green leaf and romaine lettuces (altogether), cabbage, and iceberg lettuce.

• There are other nutritional greens not mentioned in the list that are widely available in North America. The information available for all these greens is voluminous. For our purposes we’ll keep our focus on the most well-known, plus a few of the less popular ones.

• Even though it may sound incorrect, all greens are not green! Leafy green vegetables have much color variety, from the bluish-green of kale to the bright “Kelly” green of spinach, to the light, somewhat white color of cabbage.

• There is even a black cabbage (Cavalo Nero), which is actually a very dark green that is also called Tuscan kale. It originated from the Tuscany region of Italy where it is grown in most vegetable gardens. Cavalo Nero is an essential ingredient in the very healthy signature soup of the region, ribollita.

Have you heard of the process of “massaging greens”? Kale in particular is a stronger-tasting green with a tough texture. If it is massaged or squeezed for about a minute, the kale will get nice and juicy and will shrink in volume. When lemon juice is added it will “cook” the kale and soften it even more.

• The Tuscan region of Italy is famous for many culinary things including the cooking term, “Florentine.” This term can be interpreted as the cooking style used in Florence, Italy, but has also come to describe the cuisine that includes spinach as an ingredient. Florentine cooking also uses fresh herbs like rosemary, basil, parsley and thyme.

• Since Tuscany is close to the coast, Florentine cooking features seafood dishes as well as local boar, rabbit and beef from the region’s white Chianina cattle. According to folklore, the association of spinach with Florence may have been because of Catherine de Medici, the Italian wife of King Henry II, who reigned in France from 1560-1563.

• Supposedly to honor her Italian roots, Queen Catherine introduced spinach to the Court of France and dubbed any dish containing spinach to be “Florentine.” Whether the story is true or not, Florentine is now synonymous with spinach in dishes such as Eggs Florentine, Oysters Florentine and more.

• To make for some confusing terminology, “Florentines” refer to a sweet, baked confection that contains no spinach! These Florentines are a European sweet served as a cake, bar or cookie. Sweet Florentines are a mixture of candied fruit, toasted nuts, honey and/or sugar and topped with a layer of melted chocolate.

• Moving away from sweets and back to greens, a green that has many names around the world is rapini or what is more commonly known as broccoli raab. This green is unrelated to broccoli even though broccoli is in its name. It is a close relative to turnips, and the greens look very similar to turnip greens. Other names linked to this green are rapa, rapine, raab, rappi, rappone, fall and spring raab, turnip broccoli, broccoli rape, broccoli de rabe, Italian turnip and turnip broccoli (got all that?).

• As more greens are available in North America, an old favorite has decreased somewhat in popularity. Iceberg lettuce was an overwhelming success for years because of its ability to remain crunchy even after days and sometimes weeks of shipping. Up until the 1930s, iceberg was known as “Crisphead”

lettuce. Many still prefer the crunchy Iceberg over the limp, dark green varieties.

• Bruce Church, of Salinas, California, is the founder of Fresh Express and the one given credit for popularizing Iceberg lettuce. Along with three partners, he formed an ice company in the 1930s that shipped fresh heads of lettuce across the country in rail cars. “Crisphead” lettuce became more commonly known as

According to Caesar Cardini’s daughter Rosa, the

Caesar Salad was created on July 4th, 1924, when her father’s restaurant in

Tijuana, Mexico, was very crowded. As supplies were running low, Caesar

created salads tableside with what he had on hand. The good taste as well as the presentation were a hit and became a part of food history! The

dressing was made available commercially in 1948 under

the name “Cardini’s: The Original Caesar

Dressing.”

1. What leafy green vegetable did Julius Caesar eat to prevent indigestion?2. What vitamins are often assoc- iated with the positive nutritional value of greens?

THE FRENCH QUARTER (from page 2)

buildings have been protected by law and cannot be demolished. Any renovations or new construction in the neighborhood must be done according to regulations to match the period historic architectural style.

• Over 35,000 buildings in New Orleans, many in the French Quarter, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cabildo has been called the second most important building in America, after Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

• The Cabildo, St. Louis Cathedral and the Presbytere (also part of the museum complex) all surround Jackson Square. Originally called “Place d’Armes,” the Square was renamed in 1856 after Andrew Jackson, a hero of the Battle of New Orleans. An equestrian statue of Jackson stands in the center.

• Jackson Square is one of the most visited areas in the Quarter, where local artists sketch, paint, and display their works. St. Louis Cathedral is the oldest continuously active cathedral in the United States.

• Another old establishment of the Quarter is the French Market, the oldest farmer’s market in the United States. Dating back to 1791, it also includes a flea market. The French Market merchants tout themselves as “three centuries of history, six blocks of shopping, open seven days a week!”

• Any New Orleans visit should include the Original Café Du Monde Coffee Stand, established in 1862. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it closes only on Christmas Day and whenever a hurricane passes through. The coffee with chicory, served black or “au lait” (poured half and half with hot milk), and beignets (square French doughnuts), are definitely worth the wait. And yes, just about always there’s a crowd lined up.

Jackson Square, with the Cabildo left, Saint Louis Cathedral center, and statue of Andrew Jackson.

Evidently, in 1931 a secretary at the Academy of Motion Pic-ture Arts and Sciences saw the statuette for the first time and exclaimed, “Why, he reminds me of my Uncle Oscar!” The com-ment struck the fancy of a reporter who was present, and he put it in a story about the awards, and the name stuck.

• At the end of August 2005, the majority of New Orleans was flooded due to levee breaches after Hurricane Katrina. However, the French Quarter was one of the areas to remain mostly dry since it was built on dry elevated land about five feet above sea level. The area predates the New Orleans levee systems.

• Although some streets in the Quarter experienced minor flooding and several buildings experienced a significant amount of wind damage, most of the major landmarks suffered only minor damage. The Quarter also escaped almost all of the looting and violence that followed the storm. Nearly all of the antique shops and art galleries in the French Quarter, for example, were untouched.

First introduced to the United States at the 1876 World’s Fair, Kudzu is oftened referred to as “the plant that ate the South.” Its status has changed through the years from a prized plant for erosion control to an obnoxious, encroaching weed.• The Philadelphia Centennial Exposition at the

Fair was held to celebrate the United States’ first 100 years. Countries from all over the world were invited to build exhibits and participate in the celebration.

• The Japanese government constructed a garden filled with beautiful vine plants from their country. Among those plants, the large leaves and sweet-smelling blooms of kudzu caught the eyes of American gardeners. Kudzu was promoted as an ornamental plant to be used for erosion control and as a forage crop for livestock and horses.

• For many years, Southern farmers were encouraged to plant kudzu to prevent erosion. President Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) planted it during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and hundreds of men were put to work planting kudzu. In the 1940s, farmers were even given cash incentives to plant the vine.

• By the early 1950s, kudzu was beginning to

grow out of control in many areas. The plant, without the natural insect enemies it has in Asia, can grow up to a foot per day and an amazing 60 feet per growing season. In 1953, kudzu was declared a pest weed and removed from the list of permissible cover crops.

• In 1972, the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) started searching for a way to control kudzu. If unchecked, the plant quickly covers trees, shrubs, power poles, buildings, abandoned cars and virtually anything in its path. Its large, thickly growing leaves block sunlight and smothers other plants. Due to its weight, the heavy vines even break branches and can uproot trees!

• A possible solution for controlling kudzu emerged recently from an insect problem reported by a Georgia gardener. Discovered was a little dark green insect later determined to be an Asian bug known as the bean plataspid. Interestingly, the bug is attracted to white cars, and biologists think a likely entry into the United States was via imported white cars, most likely from Japan.

• Preliminary tests from the University of Georgia show that with the bean plataspid feeding on kudzu foliage, growth was reduced in test plots by about a third, compared to kudzu plots with no bugs. Unfortunately, the bugs also feed on soybeans, a valuable crop in the Southeastern United States. Botanically speaking, kudzu and soybeans are both legumes (bean family), and the fear is that the bug will feed on another important legume crop — peanuts.

• Mature Kudzu vines can grow up to 4 inches in diameter and extend from 32-100 feet out from the stalk. The massive tap roots can be 7 inches in diameter and over 6 feet in length, weighing as much as 400 pounds. Up to 30 vines can grow from a single root crown.

• According to the USDA, kudzu covers about 7 million acres in the South. Kudzu has been found from Florida west to Texas, north to

Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana and Maine, and in the west in Washington and Oregon. In 2009, kudzu was first discovered in Canada near Leamington, Ontario, on the shores of Lake Erie.

• Southerners have a love-hate relationship with kudzu. Consequently, there are kudzu festivals, kudzu queens and even kudzu jelly. While most buy the jelly as a novelty, some say it has a pleasant grape-like taste.

TUES., JAN. 24

Q: I heard a rumor that Steven Tyler won’t be back as a judge on “American Idol.” Please tell me it isn’t true. He’s one of the main reasons that I watch the show! -- Diana W. in West Virginia

A: The Aerosmith rocker recently announced he will indeed quit the show to focus on the band. Steven said, in true Steven style: “I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mis-tress, ‘American Idol,’ before she boils my rabbit. I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back.” His news came the day before Jennifer Lopez announced that she, too, was leaving the show. I’ll tell you, I wouldn’t mind seeing Richard Marx and Debbie Gibson in the judges’ chairs. ***

Q: Please tell me that “Falling Skies” will be back next summer for another season! -- Jeffrey D., via e-mail

A: TNT’s blockbuster science-fiction dra-ma about how the world fights back after an alien invasion definitely will be back next summer for a 10-episode third season. This no-brainer decision (“Falling Skies” is cable’s No. 1 drama in the 18 to 49 age market, and is No. 2 in 25 to 54, behind TNT’s other breakout hit, “Dallas”) will continue the quest of Noah Wylie’s Mason, Will Patton’s Weaver and Moon Bloodgood’s Dr. Glass as they lead the 2nd

Mass resistance group toward survival and, hope-fully, the kicking of some alien butt off the planet Earth. ***

Q: What has Shaquille O’Neal been up to lately? -- Roger G., Franklin, Miss.

A: Shaq just signed on to star in a new series for truTV tentatively titled “Upload with Sha-quille O’Neal.” The show will be hosted by comedian Gary Owen and co-star Shaq and comedian Godfrey, as well as a special guest for each of the 10 episodes. They will scour the Internet looking for the funniest online videos to comment on, and they’ll also create their own viral videos, pull pranks and parody cur-rent pop-culture stories. Shaq had this to say about his new venture: “I’ve been a fan of truTV for a long time, and I look forward to working with my good friends Gary Owen and Godfrey. I’ve always tried to entertain people, and I know this show will deliver big laughs.” ***

Q: I remember a while back that Kelsey Grammer announced he and his wife were expecting. Has she had her baby yet? -- Barbara D., via e-mail

A: Kelsey, 57, and Kayte, 31, announced earlier this year that the ecstatic couple were expect-ing twins. Kayte gave birth to a healthy baby girl in mid-July, but tragically, the baby’s twin brother did not survive. The couple said in a joint statement: “A glorious birth with a lingering sadness is ours today. We choose to celebrate the life that has been given us. We proudly introduce our Faith (Evangeline Eli-sa Grammer) to the world today looking forward to the days ahead and the children yet to come.”

Flag Thief Identified When I first heard the news item, I was out-raged: Over the course of three days, 75 American flags were stolen from a veterans cemetery. Upon further investigation, I was chuckling ... almost. In New York, in the Civil War section of the Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson, flags had gone missing, and people were justifiable angry. Only the flag portions were missing, not the wooden poles, which remained pushed into the ground. The latest theft was discovered just hours after a meeting of local officials, veterans and police to address the topic of stolen flags -- because it had happened before at the same cemetery. Something had to be done. Upon learning of the new damage, police set up cameras to attempt to nail the culprit in the flag thefts. What they found on the video had them scratching their heads: A woodchuck, also knows as a groundhog, was seen pulling down the flags and hauling them away, minus the wooden pole. Extend-ing the investigation, police used a special camera to go down into the burrows and tunnels the wood-chucks had dug, and sure enough, there were rem-nants of the flags, used as bedding. A look around the Internet reveals that wood-chucks have been notorious for stealing flags (and flower arrangements) in cemeteries. In Bernville, Pa., woodchucks stole 40 flags -- in 2005. So it’s been going on for a long time. It’s suspected that there’s a chemical put into the flags that attracts the woodchucks. While the loss of the flags is good news for flag manufacturers, who will no doubt benefit from additional flag orders, they need to do the patriotic thing and change that chemi-cal. Perhaps the addition of mint or another scent will deter the varmints from snatching flags.

Old-car Conundrum Dear Mary: My husband and I have decid-ed to buy a new car, but now we’re not sure what to do with our old one. Doing a dealer trade-in is the easiest option, but I know we could get more for it by selling it ourselves. What should we do? -- Dora, Texas

Dear Dora: The difference between the amount a dealer will give you on a trade-in (the wholesale value) and the retail value (selling it pri-vately) can be as much as 20 percent. Let’s say in your case the difference is $2,000. Even if it takes 20 hours of your time to get your car ready to sell, list and show -- that’s $100 an hour tax-free money for the hassle. Something to consider, for sure. Visit the Kelley Blue Book web-site (www.kbb.com) to calculate both the retail and trade-in values for your specific area. Be sure to read their articles on selling a car. This will give you the information and confidence you need to make the best decision. *** Dear Mary: Whenever I pay a bill, I keep the statement “just in case.” I’ve been doing this for years and now have a huge stack, includ-ing pay stubs. When can I toss these, and how should I do it? -- Tom, Illinois

Dear Tom: Keep pay stubs for at least one year so you can reconcile them against both your W-2 Wage and Tax Statement and your Social Se-curity Earnings Statement. If your records do not match theirs, you’ll be happy to have your pay stubs to prove your withholding. As for receipts and records of bills paid, keep them only as long as the situation is active. A

paid water bill is no longer active, but the receipt for your new water heater is. You can also confidently destroy statements for closed accounts, expired warranties and cancelled checks for items that are not proof of purchase. Remember that you’ll want to shred everything. *** Dear Mary: My husband and I are going to Europe on vacation. Our travel agent has sug-gested we get traveler’s insurance in case any arrangements fall through. Is it really worth the expense? -- Kelly, Florida

Dear Kelly: You need it, but “travel insur-ance” can be expensive and inadequate. Read the fine print. If you pay for your travel far in advance, consider trip cancellation insurance should you get sick or injured and cannot go. Next, review the insurance you have already. Homeowners insurance typically covers the loss or theft of personal effects. Your auto insurance might cover your rental car. Review your health insurance for traveling abroad. You may be covered for travel by the credit card you used to buy your tickets, or you might be eligible for really cheap supplemen-tal coverage through that company. Once you are certain of what you need beyond what you have already, supplement as necessary. Adding a short-term rider to your current insurance coverage may be much cheaper than buying a new policy from a travel agent.

Trust Is Nice, but Instinct Is King “When an animal gives you its trust, you feel like you have been given the most beautiful gift in the world.” -- Roy Horn

Last month, a zookeeper was killed by a pack of wolves in their enclosure in Sweden’s Kolmarden Wildlife Park. “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to the heart while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. “Grizzly Man” Timothy Treadwell was killed by a grizzly bear in Alaska’s Katmai National Park, where he had spent 13 summers living among the great bears. Charla Nash required a face transplant after being attacked by her friend’s 200-pound chimpan-zee, Travis. Veteran trainer Dawn Brancheau was killed by an orca during a live performance at Sea World Orlando. Roy Horn, of Siegfried and Roy, was severely mauled by Montecore, the 7-year-old white tiger he essentially reared, in front of a live audience at The Mirage in Las Vegas. This is not a list of rogue animals who at-tacked for no reason. It’s a list of wild animals who acted on instinct. An animal’s trust is a beautiful gift. But we humans would be wise to remember that in the wild, instinct trumps trust. In the wild, instinct is king. Wild animals are wild animals regardless of where they live. Some are lucky enough to live out their lives in the wild as nature intended. Others are tagged and tracked but otherwise left alone as protected species. The less fortunate live in captiv-ity -- as performers, as exhibits, as laboratory tools, even as pets -- sometimes receiving excellent care, oftentimes abused or neglected. Call them tame, call them socialized, but don’t call them trustworthy. They are not domesti-cated; they are wild. And a wild animal’s worst en-emy, bar none, is man. Domesticated animals are those in which have been influenced by humans to meet their needs. Dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, goats, donkeys and

horses are primary examples of successful domes-tication. By and large, with domesticated animals, trust is possible because survival instincts in the wild sense have little if any value. Additionally, through selective breeding and genetics, the natural aversion to man has been bred out of domesticated animals. Our dogs are happy to see us come home. Our cats purr when we stroke them. Our horses stand by as we saddle and mount them. These are domesticated animals, bred over centuries to favor us, to work for us, to love us, to need us. Last weekend, a surfer was killed by a great white shark in waters near Wedge Island in Western Australia. Two weeks before that, a camper was at-tacked by a mountain lion in Nevada County, Califor-nia. Will we react in fear? Will we retaliate against nature? Will we hunt the great whites, trap the big cats? Or will we realize our place in the world and respect the fact that venturing into the wild invites awesome experiences and equally awesome risks? Affordable Care Act Poses Financial Puzzle Whether you are celebrating or upset, it is clear that for the moment the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. Americans, liberal and conser-vative, have significant reservations for numerous different reasons. For many it is the cost. For those with Medicare, it may be concerns that their benefits will be reduced to meet the health care needs of the uninsured. Others worry that the law will ruin the best health care system in the world. (If only that were true. The health of Americans ranks last among developed countries.) There is consensus about what most of us favor. Almost universally we believe that young people who are in school or working in jobs without insurance should remain on their parents’ insurance until they are 26. We believe that no one should be denied access to insured care because of the presence of a pre-existing condition. This is a no-brainer. Pre-existing conditions make movement from one job to another difficult. And for those who lose a job, get-ting re-employed becomes impossible. Most agree that all children need preventive care and if they become ill, deserve adequate medical treatment. In Arkansas, the percentage of our resi-dents who are disadvantaged and poor is very high. Many are gainfully employed and hardworking but currently have no access to affordable health care insurance. These people have a shorter life expec-tancy, suffer from many chronic diseases, and go to the emergency room too often for minor problems and too late for serious ones that can lead to finan-cial ruin and more. Paradoxically, being uninsured and ill is very costly. For these reasons, it is fair to

say that, no matter our status in life -- rich or poor, young or old -- as long as we are Americans, being healthy and productive is a good goal. The opposition to the Affordable Care Act boils down to the cost. States are balking at the extra billions they will have to spend on Medicaid. Lobbyists are working to assure that their special interest groups continue to generate current rev-enue or more from health care and that there be no attempt to reduce the amount paid for any medical services. I am sure there are other financial reasons for concern and like most of us, I do not understand the full economic implications of the Affordable Care Act. I do not think the experts, if there are any, have a clue, either. Where do we go from here? We mostly agree that everyone should receive care. And be-cause of concerns about costs, there are encourag-ing signs on the horizon. Insurance companies and government-sponsored health care programs are designing ways to reimburse physicians and hos-pitals for quality -- not quantity -- care. Approaches to payment will change and physicians and patients are becoming more involved in managing costs. Clearly, we are just at the starting line of a long journey. Rather than turning back the clock, let’s work together as a nation to improve the quality of care for everyone. We spend roughly two times more than any other country on health care per capita. We must ask why we pay more for equipment and drugs than Canadians or Europe-ans. When it comes to technology and manag-ing acute or life-threatening diseases, money is no object. But prevention is paid no more than lip ser-vice. And unnecessary, duplicative and excessive testing and treatments contribute to the fact that as much as half of all health care costs could be cut by reducing overhead and practicing the right, rather than too much, medicine. Currently, the only hope lies in insurance companies changing incentives for hospitals and health care providers to practice quality care and cut costs. It is so sad that the bottom line remains the highest priority for the majority involved in health care.

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

Columnist’s “Ivory Tower” Is in the Basement of a Suburban Split Level Q. How does it feel sitting there in your ivory tower with all the trappings of power serving as a mouthpiece for the Obama Admin-istration? Why should I believe anything you say? After all, you’re paid to mislead people about the corrupt workings of the Social Secu-rity system!

A. Wow -- I must admit that little diatribe came out of the blue! It followed an exchange of emails I recently had with a reader. It’s a totally ri-diculous accusation. But I bring it up only because many readers think I work for the Social Security Administration and that I am some kind of spokes-person for the agency. I am not. And I certainly am not a “mouthpiece for the Obama Administration.” The person who sent me this email, along with more than a few other readers, believe that I have an office in an ivory tower somewhere in Wash-ington D.C.; that I get my daily marching orders ei-ther directly from the president or certainly from the head of the Social Security Administration; and that I’m paid handsomely to mislead people into falling for the failed policies of a doomed social program. Let me paint a more realistic picture for you. I’m a frumpy old retired government employee, ek-ing out an existence on a modest civil service pen-sion, living with my wife of 40 years in a split level home in Colorado -- and sometimes at a beach bun-galow in San Diego. My “ivory tower” office is a desk in our basement. The “trappings of power” that sur-round me include grandkids’ toys and a 25-year-old couch permanently sticky and stained by the spills of both my kids and now my grandkids. It is true that I once was a spokesperson for the Social Security Administration. I worked for SSA for 32 years, and for part of that time, I served as the agency’s deputy press officer. But I retired about seven years ago. I started writing this column while I still worked for SSA. I no longer was in the agency’s press office when I wrote the column, and I never had to get official clearance for any column I wrote while I still worked for the government. Despite that fact, I guess you could say that while I was still work-ing for SSA, this column was a quasi-official mouth-piece for the organization. At least I certainly dared not write anything that was against agency policy or that would upset my bosses! But that all changed the day I retired in 2005. From that point on, I was no longer a spokesperson (some might argue an “apologist’) for the Social Se-curity system or the agency that runs the program. Instead, I was just a retired old goat who knew a lot about the inner workings of Social Security and who was eager to share his knowledge with the readers of this column. And I can tell you that I breathed a huge sigh of relief on the day I retired. Not only because I wouldn’t have to fight Southern California’s night-marish traffic to get to work each day. But because I was now free to “tell it like to is” -- to explain So-cial Security rules without having to worry about any “spin” that SSA’s political leaders might want to put on the program. And because I would be able to

freely criticize the agency or its employees when I thought they were doing something wrong. I’ve done both many times over the past sev-en years. Yet some people still want to believe that I am some kind of paid “flack” for the government. As an example, let me explain what led to the diatribe that began this column. A guy wrote to ask me some questions about filing for Supplemental Security Income disability benefits. (To remind some of my readers, SSI is a federal welfare program that SSA runs for the gov-ernment. It is NOT a Social Security benefit. It’s an entirely separate program.) Anyway, he apparently had gone to his local Social Security office to file for SSI benefits. He was angry because the person he talked to simply told him he wasn’t eligible and sent him on his way. I wrote back to tell him that my hunch was the SSA representative was right. SSI has very spe-cific and rigid rules about income and asset eligibility requirements. (Those rules vary from state to state, so I can’t just list them here.) If you have even one dollar more than the rules allow, you’re simply not eligible for benefits. That reaffirmation of the SSA’s reps denial of his claim is what set him off. And part of his missive to me used phrases like, “I know you guys are paid to turn down as many people as you can for benefits.” There are two main points this guy failed to understand. One I didn’t make clear in my first an-swer to the guy. The other I did. Point one is that SSA employees are NOT paid to deny Social Security or SSI benefits to any-one. They are paid to carry out the rules and laws of both programs. In fact, they have an incentive to take as many claims for benefits as possible. Staffing levels in local Social Security offices are determined, in part, by how many Social Security and SSI claims they process each day. So generally speaking, the only time they are not going to take a claim for ben-efits is when the person clearly isn’t eligible for such benefits. In other words, why waste their time, and the customer’s time, when the outcome (a denied claim) is not in doubt? Having said that, the second point I made to this guy (the one he missed probably because he was blinded by rage, which he then directed at me in his follow-up email) is a point I make all the time in this column. And that is: you have every right in the world to file for any kind of benefit for which you think you are eligible. So if a Social Security rep says

that you aren’t eligible for Social Security or SSI, you can -- and should if you really believe you are due benefits -- insist on filing. That way, you will get a formal (and legal) decision as opposed to simply someone’s opinion. And now, if you’ll excuse me, my wife is ask-ing me to come down out of my ivory tower to take out the garbage!

Viruses Not the Only Cause of Hepatitis DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past year, my wife has had to deal with autoimmune hepatitis. It’s something that hardly anyone knows about or understands, and that makes it even more difficult to cope with. Everyone thinks she has an infection. I can only haltingly explain what she has. Will you tell me and the rest of your readers about this illness? -- D.R.

ANSWER: Say “hepatitis,” and people auto-matically think of a viral infection. Say “cirrhosis,” which is sometimes the last stage of hepatitis, and people think of alcohol as the cause. Not all hepa-titis is virus-caused, and not all cirrhosis is alcohol-caused. Your wife’s illness is an example. Her liver is inflamed (hepatitis), not from an infection but from an attack on her liver by her immune system. The reason why a person’s immune system, a system designed to keep us healthy, turns on the liver is obscure. Signs that the immune system is the cause are demonstrable by finding antibodies in the blood. Antibodies are the ammunition the immune system makes to fend off dangerous invaders. One special antibody, the anti-nuclear antibody, is a big indication that the liver has come under an immune attack. The course of autoimmune hepatitis is un-predictable. It might be mild with few symptoms, or it may take a more aggressive course in which the skin and eye whites turn yellow, where fatigue is immobilizing, where abdominal pain is common and where the skin develops an itch. Quite often, a liver biopsy is the procedure that provides evidence of autoimmune hepatitis. Prednisone, one of the cortisone drugs, of-ten is the treatment of choice. It reins in an out-of-control immune system. Another immune-modifying drug, azathioprine, can be added to the regimen. It sounds like your wife is responding well to treatment (from parts of your lengthy letter that I had to delete due to space limitation). The booklet on hepatitis details the vari-ous forms of the illness, and how they are acquired and treated. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 503W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is the procedure for removing a tick attached to your skin? Can you remove it yourself, or should it be removed only by a physician? -- T.R.

ANSWER: It’s safe for people to remove ticks on their own. You need tweezers with fine grooves on their lower, inner surfaces. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as you can and as close to the tick’s head. Gently but firmly pull the tick straight out, at a right angle to the skin. Don’t crush it. Don’t bother with popular techniques such as coating the tick with petroleum jelly or applying a just-blown-out match to it. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Is Prozac ad-dicting? Can you take it for life? -- D.L. ANSWER: Prozac isn’t addicting, but the drug should be stopped gradually rather than abruptly. People with recurring bouts of depression can take it for extended periods of time. ***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Hiring a Caregiver Through an Agency When you hire a caregiver for a family member or parent, how do you know who or what you’re getting? If you hire someone through an agency, you would expect that it’s done all the background checks. But can you trust the agen-cies? AARP posted on its website the results of a study done by Dr. Lee Lindquist of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Lindquist discovered that only half of placement agencies do any background screening or testing of caregivers. Only one-third do any drug testing or check out qualifications. And only one-third send supervisors out to check on caregivers. Scary, isn’t it? Lindquist developed a list of 10 questions to ask agencies if you’re considering using them to hire a caregiver: 1. How do they recruit caregivers and what are their requirements? 2. What kind of screenings do they do? What level of background check? Any drug testing? 3. Is there any training, such as certification in CPR? 4. How are the caregivers insured? Are they bonded? 5. What skills do the caregivers have? Are they skilled in transfers, dressing and bathing? 6. How does the agency assess these skills? Do they rely only on the applicant’s word? 7. What is their policy if caregivers can’t do what is stated in the contract? 8. If you’re unhappy with the care, will the agency provide a substitute? 9. Is there a supervisor who will evaluate the quality of the care? How often? 10. Is the supervision via phone or by in-person home visits? Your best bets: Look for a caregiver through your church or support group. Ask others for recom-mendations. Contact seniors service agencies for recommendations.

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Simplifying Caretaking Q: A friend of mine is under the care of a full-time caretaker whom his wife has hired. She herself is not in very good health and re-cently asked me to drive him to a doctor ap-pointment as the caretaker had a schedule conflict. When I picked him up, the live-in care-taker told me to take good care of him because the patient belonged to him. Later, I pondered what the caretaker meant when he said he was in charge of my friend’s caretaking. I thought it was his wife who was. How do these things work?

A: I also believe that his wife is the primary caretaker because she is the one who asked you for the favor. Home-based caretakers and employers usually base their rates and responsibilites on an in-formal rather than a written contractual agreement. One major reason is that the patient’s condition may change, which often happens quickly. Those who are responsible for someone who needs assisted care must be able to make vital decisions. I believe it is his wife who is the primary caretaker, but she has employed a caretaker to be responsible for his daily activities. Daily activities may include companionship, administering medica-tions, listening and comforting him, communicating between her and him, keeping him content, bathed, appropriately dressed, groomed, fed, driving him to his doctor and/or hospital appointments, and other needed daily activities. Verbal agreements minimize confusion, mis-understanding and frustration for all of the parties involved. In your friend’s wife case, since she is not able to handle her husband herself, she has let her husband know and understand that the caretaker will be his helper. Caretaking is one of the hardest jobs that ex-ist. When combing both the physical and emotional factors along with the workload, it becomes a triple-barreled challenge. Bless those who do it! * * *

Q: Last year we lost one of our sons at age 29 in an automobile accident. My hus-band is still experiencing grief and a great deal of depression because he had never really told either him or our younger son that he loved them. My husband’s father was a tough task-master who raised his boys to be “real men,”

strong and macho. They were taught never to show “weakness” by displaying emotions or a soft side. Can you share some advice with us?

A: This is a sad situation indeed, and I am sure your husband is hurting deeply. I would rec-ommend attending classes and getting advice from professionals at hospice organizations, from pastors and/or organizations that join together in group sup-port meetings to help each other overcome their common problems. If a despondent’s symptoms be-come too severe, it may become necessary to involve a psychiatrist for in-depth counseling. Part of his recovery process should definite-ly include his honest confession to your other son that he does indeed love him, and to ask for his for-givenss for not having shared this fact with him be-fore. It will serve as a healing catharsis and a major step toward defeating his depression. Although grief can linger for a lifetime, there are ways to cope and minimize its effects, allowing us to carry on with our lives normally. But it will take some effort on your husband’s part. *To see if you can be helped by a hearing aid.

“It’s hard to feel romantic and attracted to someone who never seems to listen. But that’s how someone with untreated hearing loss often comes across.” says Dr. Fred Piercy, a couples therapist in Blacksburg,Virginia. His wife Susan

is an audiologist who wears a hearing aid.

Some 80,000 people are killed as a result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least 60,000 more would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the radioactive fallout.

● On Aug. 7, 1959, the U.S. unmanned spacecraft Explorer 6 is launched into an orbit around the Earth. The spacecraft fea-tured a scanner that transmitted a crude pic-ture of the Earth’s surface from a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit.

● On Aug. 11, 1965, in the Watts neigh-borhood of Los Angeles, a riot began that eventually ranged over a 50-square-mile area. With the assistance of thousands of National Guardsmen, order was restored five days later. The violence left 34 dead, 1,032 injured, nearly 4,000 arrested and $40 million worth of property destroyed.

● On Aug. 8, 1974, President Richard Nixon announces his intention to become the first president in American history to resign. With impeachment proceedings un-der way against him for his involvement in the Watergate affair, Nixon finally bowed to pressure from the public and Congress to leave the White House.

● On Aug. 10, 1981, Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies gets the 3,631st hit of his baseball career, breaking Stan Musial’s record for most hits by a National Leaguer. It was only Rose’s 2,886th game; it had taken Musial 3,026 games to set the mark.

● On Aug. 12, 1990, fossil hunter Susan Hendrickson discovers three huge bones jutting out of a cliff in South Dakota. They turned out to be part of the largest Tyran-nosaurus rex skeleton ever discovered. Amazingly, the skeleton was more than 90 percent complete.

The Smasher and the Simply Smashing

Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing.

As most of us know by now, Bub-ba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too.

For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a cus-tom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the company announced after the tournament.

Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uni-forms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase awareness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of making fun of the color.

And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoe-nix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations

during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so.

But his manner of dress and that unorthodox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tour-nament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders.

Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each out-fit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit.

While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in com-mon — they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.”

Well, Watson surely will be beat-ing it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion — and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree — you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a play-off, but this isn’t hockey, you know.

Pottery Business Saved by Moonshiners Q: Enclosed is a photo of a canister set that we found in an old shed. The set in-cludes five canisters with lids, and they mea-sure in graduating sizes 6- to 12-inches high. They are in perfect condition. We would like to know the origin of the set and its value.

A: Your canister set was made by Ellis Prod-ucts in Marshall, Texas. The firm was founded in the early 1900s by W. F. Rocker and sold to S. H. Ellis in 1905. In the beginning, they made crocks, jugs and canning jars. When glass-canning containers became pop-ular in the 1920s, their business went into a steep decline. But timing is everything. What appeared at first to be disaster turned out to be a windfall for the company. It was the era of prohibition and they were able to turn a handsome profit with a high volume of sales from crockery jugs that were snapped up by busy moonshiners. Hand-turned pottery on the potter’s wheel was introduced around 1930. Ellis Products is still in business today. Your canister set was made in the late 1900s and would be worth $125 to $150.

Q: This mark can be seen on my set of porcelain dinnerware. It was handed down to me from my great-grandmother. I am 80, so this set must be over 100 years old. Originally, the set was a service for 12, but over the years, many pieces were broken and some are miss-ing, so the set is not complete. There are 50 dishes left in the set, including serving pieces. Each dish has scalloped edges and is decorated with pink floral bands around the perimeter, as well as in the center. They are beautiful and in pristine condition. What can you tell me about my china?

A: Haviland China was established in Li-moges, France, in 1864. American businessman, Da-vid Haviland, founded it. The company remained in the family until around 1972 when it was taken over by the financial and industrial company, FIDEL. In 1988, it was bought by Dominque de Coster and is

still operating. Researching the name of the pattern of your dinnerware can be a daunting task. Haviland produced over 60,000 patterns. It can take time, ded-ication and also become frustrating to find your spe-cific pattern. There are books available with pattern information. Check with your library for books by Arlene Scheiger. Your set was made around 1900 and would probably be worth $225 to $375.

The 100 Million Dollar Man If you believe in capitalism, you know that you pay what the market will bear. In New Orleans -- particularly after Friday, July 13, 2012 -- the mar-ket has spoken. Drew Brees, 33, the record-setting signal caller for the New Orleans Saints, signed a five-year contract that afternoon that will pay him $100 million. That’s a record, too. According to the NFL, $60 million is guaranteed and it came with a $37 million signing bonus. Next season he will earn $40 million all told. According to Forbes, the Saints’ average ticket prices and their resale value make them the most sought after ticket in the NFL. Put another way, with an average ticket price of $79 at the Su-perdome, if the team sells out every game, almost every dollar from the box office would go into his pocket. That’s a lot of escarole. In a radio interview with former Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert, Brees admitted it was a lot of money, but assured listeners that it was a business deal, pure and simple. “I can tell you from the start of this negotia-tion, I have not once thought ‘Hey, I want to be the highest-paid guy.’ In the end, did the contract end up being that? Yes, but it was more about trying to objectively look at the numbers from the last decade for a top-tier quarterback ... and just trying to do what’s fair and justified.” Brees played on a single year’s contract last season and came within four points of going to the NFC Championship game. In other sea-sons he averaged $6 million per year -- still a lot but not nearly what he was worth. He considered last season an act of faith on his part. Fans might be skeptical -- every team has been burned by a player coming off of a career year. Still, it was some year. He set NFL single-season records with 468 completions, 5,476 yards passing and a 71.2 completion percentage. The Saints set a record for total offense and led the league in home attendance, where they went unde-feated. New Orleans, despite its outlandish par-tying reputation, is actually a pretty blue-collar town. And Brees is the kind of guy you see walk-ing around eating a sandwich in New Orleans (he owns a sandwich shop there) or pumping his own gas (as reported by TMZ on an apparently slow paparazzi day). He’s a self-avowed family man who just happened to win a Super Bowl. “I think it’s very easy to sit back and say ‘this is ridiculous,’” Brees admitted. “[But] I feel like with a contract like this, people can say ‘they are paying you what you earned or what you de-served.’ ... It’s just about representing our team and city the right way.”

Hit with Your Hip for Power

The number one request I get from students is “howcan I hit the ball further”? I then proceed to watchthem swing a few times and see the same problemswith their swings; they hit the ball flat footed with nohip rotation. The strongest muscles in the human body are allunderneath you; glutes, hamstrings and quads. Theaverage golfer does not engage these muscles in theswing; they use the upper body muscles to createpower. In order to create leverage in the swing youwant to push off from the ground which will help thehip release forward creating more power.Notice in the pictures that I have the knees equallyflexed (red lines on left image) at the top of the backswing and ready to “spring” forward through theball to the target. The key to the forward swing is togo from the ground up and NOT the top down.Start with the right foot pushing off which in turnrotates the hip through impact arriving at the ballapproximately the same time the hands deliver theclub into impact. It is important to note here that theright hip rotates up in the forward swing and not down.Too many times I see golfers drop the right hip downinto impact which will slow the hip down and they getstuck at impact. You want the hip to stay high goingthrough impact so it can continue to accelerate all theway to the finish. If you want to create more power in your swing, workon using your legs to create more leverage bysupporting the hip rotation up through the ball.

“iceberg” when folks would meet the train cars of ice-packed lettuce with calls of “The icebergs are coming!” The nickname stuck, and Americans’ love of fresh salads grew with the fresh availability.

• Up until the mid-1970s, more than 95 percent of all lettuce grown in the United States was iceberg. Even though leaf lettuces have surged in popularity in the last 30-40 years, iceberg still remains a big seller. So, the next time you are eating out, check to see if a “wedge” salad is offered. It will be the familiar iceberg we grew up with.

• Another popular salad that some assume started with Julius Caesar is the Caesar Salad. It actually had its start in Tijuana, Mexico, with Caesar Cardini, who immigrated to the San Diego area from Italy with his brother, Alex, after World War I. The brothers opened Caesar’s Restaurant in Tijuana instead of San Diego because of alcohol prohibition in the United States.

• Invented in the 1920s, the Caesar Salad was for years mostly just a California specialty, with romaine lettuce being the green. The popularity of Caesar salads soared in the 1970s, and the romaine crop grew from a few California acres to 16,000 acres in the 1990s and more than 80,000 acres today.

“Yes, it is a nice course. l just wish it wasn’t so close to the airport.”
