that fewer than 3% of our high school athletes will go on to participate in college. With this in mind, what do the athletes leave your programs with? What do they take away with them from all of the hard work and dedication they have poured into your program?

I have had opportunities to sit with some of my high school teammates over the years and reminisce about our playing days. These conversations always seem to generate a lot of memories and shared experiences. The conversations invariably lead to memories of our coaches. The conversations will look back and both the good memories and the not so good memories. I believe, that for everyone of us there are signs of our relationships with our coaches.

It is with this in mind, I will once again say, one of the greatest assets a coach can demonstrate is his or her ability to foster relationships. There are a lot of players in the game when it comes to relationships. The list might include; coach to player, coach to parent, coach to administration, coach to supporters and coach to their profession. It is a very difficult task to please all of the areas mentioned. It is possible to form working relationships with each of these areas. If we

John EricksonIt has been almost a year now since I retired from the

Executive Director’s position of the MSHSCA. With the work load reduced I have had time to look back and reflect on my time as a coach and our time as the leaders of the MSHSCA. I look back and marvel at how in the past 50 years the role of the coach has become so much more demanding. The growth of social media, the growth of year around sports, the influence of parents on AAU programs and traveling teams has significantly changed the world of our high school sports.

So the question is, how do coaches survive in this rapidly changing world of high school sports? Why are some coaches so much more successful than others? We all know there are certain characteristics of successful coaches. These characteristics most often include; dedication, hard work, knowledge and of course recognizing talent and helping athletes reach their full potential. I believe that most coaches possess and demonstrate these qualities. If a coach does not exemplify these character traits, he or she is probably not going to last long in the coaching profession.

I believe that all of us can always find ways to improve as people and as coaches. I think there are great lessons that can be taken away from the “Why We Play” training that was developed in a partnership between the MSHSL, the MSHSCA and the MnIAAA. The initiative has been driven by Jodi Redman of the MSHSL, since it was created. I know that many of you have attended the training and, if not, you should. The course asks each coach to ask questions about themselves that can help coaches see themselves through the lens of the athlete. I believe that every coach needs to address the fundamental question of the “Why We Play”. Why do I coach? Why do I coach the way I do? What does it feel like to be coached by me?

I have looked at these questions and have asked myself; how would our most successful coaches answer the questions? I am confident that most would be able to answer each of the questions in a very positive way. Negativity is not part of a successful coach’s identity. I believe the one common characteristic of successful coaches is their ability to foster relationships. We know from the data, that has been collected,

3MINNESOTA PREP COACH

The fall sports season is done and it didn’t disappoint in the thrills and elation that we saw throughout competition. Coaches are a rare breed that believe that the process and the journey are what are important, not so much the wins or losses. Coaches and Athletes when interviewed look back and comment on the journey of practices, teammates, ups and downs and fighting through adversity as what mattered most to them. These are individuals who go on to achieve great things and be great people.

Athletes want experiences and want to learn how to recover from a loss or set back and come out the other side heroic. They all love to play the underdog overcoming all odds to succeed and we love to watch them do it. There was a lot of that this fall in Minnesota sports and the stories will ring with us for years to come. Each town and each school has their fairytale story of heroics and come from behind wins and these should always be cherished and told and retold over the years. Each town also has the story of the athlete that came

back from injury, sickness, or hard times and rejoined their team to contribute to the valiant struggle that all teams go through in a sports season.

Sports particularly high school sports are stories that we as coaches and athletes are the characters in the story and we write that story every season. We are the authors as coaches and we need to make every effort to write that story to include everyone and have every player get a life long experience out of this season. As in a story each character or player in this case has a role to play and we as coaches need to maximize that role to give them a memory that will last a lifetime.

We should encourage athletes to dream and to dream big, as it motivates them and inspires them to strive for better accomplishments. Let’s all write a good story this Winter season and give everyone a journey to remember. This story is about real life and it is a box office hit.

Coaches Association

As I notice the temperatures falling, I realize that the off-season for high school tennis is a sign that the holiday season is beginning. And for many, like me, this season is a time of thanksgiving. Reflecting on the season, I am thankful for many things: the great coaches who work tirelessly to promote tennis in high schools around the state, who build character in developing young adults, and who foster positive sportsmanship, win or lose; the players I (and you) coach who come to play in practice and matches, and who bring positive attitudes to the court – it’s contagious; and the parents who encourage and support their daughters and sons (and programs) as they play one of the best sports around. I am further thankful for the work of the entire MTCA – and in particular, Rick Engelstad (Executive Secretary) – in promoting and supporting our programs and players to have the best possible high school tennis experience. I know many of you feel the same.

The State Tennis Tournament at the end of October put the finishing touches on a terrific 2018 Girls’ Tennis season. Congratulations to the State Team Champions: Edina (Class AA) and Blake (Class A), both of whom defended their titles. In addition, individual champions were crowned in both classes:

Singles: Nicole Copeland– Edina (Class AA), Arlina Shen– Blake (Class A)

Doubles: Maddie Suk/Rachel Kelly– Hopkins (Class AA), Clare Palen/Natalie Allison– Rochester Lourdes (Class A)

Copeland in AA singles plus Palen and Allison in A doubles repeated as champions. There were many great matches through the tournaments as both players and coaches can be proud of their performances. Further, the MTCA recognized the following coaches as 2018 Coaches of the Year:

• Class A Head Coach: Matt Draeger, Litchfield • Class A Assistant: Jeff Lalim, Yellow Medicine East • Class AA Head Coach: Dave Stearns, Minnetonka• Class AA Assistant: Chad Anderson, Brainerd

This fall tennis season also introduced the roll out of Tennis Reporting online scorebook. While a few glitches were discovered, overall as a first run here in Minnesota, things went well. Our goal was to have more transparency in the team and individual scores/records across the board. With 100%

participation from coaches, we achieved that. Thanks to our coaches for getting on board with this. We will continue to work to fine-tune the process as we move forward to the spring tennis season.

Looking ahead, now is the time to also mark the date for our annual Tennis Coaches Clinic: Friday, March 1st through Sunday, March 3rd. This year the MTCA will partner with the USTA Northern and USPTA Northern to host the clinic, bringing added sessions to both Friday evening and Sunday morning. The line-up of presenters is again strong: Bill Mountford, from the USPTA; Ajay Pant, Life Time National Tennis Director, and Craig O’Shanessy, a leader in teaching and analyzing tennis strategy. You can find more information on the clinic and more presenters at https://www.mshsca.org/tennis. You are encouraged to register and book your hotel early. The clinic promises to be another terrific weekend of connecting with fellow coaches plus quality tennis instruction focused on improving our players and our programs.

December is here. The festivities of the holidays are underway. Enjoy the season and take time to relax with family and friends. I also invite you to spend a moment in gratitude for all the blessings life has to offer … including tennis.

Fall Coaches ClinicThe Minnesota Synchronized Swimming Coaches

Association hosted a two-day coaching clinic this fall. The clinic was run by Vanessa Keenan, a Canadian national-level coach who holds several certifications and is most well-known as The Online Synchro Coach. Her website and social media posts are popular among the synchro community where she shares a wealth of tips, drills, videos, and articles about coaching synchronized swimming. She has also written a book on routine choreography patterns. Each Minnesota team received a copy of her book for participating in the clinic.

The coaches in Minnesota often joke about the fact that getting outside training is near impossible since no one in the sport of synchronized swimming replicates the competitive season that we endure here in Minnesota. It’s very difficult to implement what others do in a 10-11 month season into our very short and intense 3 month season. Vanessa was able to tailor her presentation for our needs. The topics she covered included figures, patterns/choreography, routine analyzation, flexibility, highlight tips, and breath holding.

Synchronized Swimming is a sport that is constantly evolving, and it’s imperative that coaches keep up with education and trends. We are looking forward to our upcoming season here in Minnesota, where the talent and competition will be strong, thanks in part to The Online Synchro Coach.

Jill Johnson

I hope that this note finds you welcoming in the winter season and excited for the upcoming holidays! My name is Jill Johnson and it is my pleasure to serve on the MSHSL Board of Directors on your behalf, as the Girls Sports Representative. Together with Mr. Craig Anderson it is our privilege to work to advocate for our girls and boys athletic programs throughout the state.Another season of participation quickly came and went with the

2018 Prep Bowl serving as the post-season finale to the thousands of hours that student athletes and coaches put into their chosen fall sport. Congratulations to all of the teams and individual participants that advanced to the 2018 MSHSL Fall State Championships; each of you have a great deal to be proud of! Hard work, dedication and exceptional teamwork highlighted

not only our post-season competitions, but also filled the regular season event schedules with story after story of success and remarkable examples of the power of the human spirit! If you don’t already, I encourage you to follow John Millea on Twitter at @MSHSLJohn, for just a quick glimpse into a few of these incredible stories! I would also like to extend a special thank you

to each of you, for your special stories, and for all of the “extra’s” you put into growing your students, programs and communities! The MSHSL Board of Directors is scheduled to meet again

on Wednesday, December 5th in work session and Thursday, December 6th at our regularly scheduled Board meeting. As hopefully all of you know, during these meetings, topics of discussion and action will pertain to class competition and tournament format for all of our activities. Please go to www.mshsl.org for not only the December board meeting minutes but for pertinent information throughout the year. A reminder that Region Committees throughout the state

are currently addressing recommendations for potential bylaw changes. We encourage you to stay in contact with your Activities Director so that your input is heard as region committees discuss the proposals at hand. Feedback from the Region committees will be forwarded to the Representative Assembly for consideration in May. As always, please do not hesitate to contact either Craig or

myself if we can be of assistance in any way. Your passion is contagious and leadership skills are appreciated. Keep up the great work and best wishes for a successful season and a very happy and safe new year.

A View from SchuBy: John Schumacher, MSHSCA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

As I was walking through Park Rapids High school I could hear the sound of the basketballs being used for girls’ basketball practice. I chatted with a student who was commenting about the State Football tournament which would conclude the 2018 football season which also meant the final fall state champions would be

crowned. I would like to take a moment and congratulate all those athletes and coaches that were crowned state champions this past fall. You have created memories with your athletes that you will never forget. The stories that were written in John’s Journal of how coaches addressed their players after a tough loss make me proud to say I am a member of the MSHSCA. I hope I had the same impact on my athletes over the years that these coaches did. The writings were also a tribute to the coaches for the positive impact they had on these young men and women. When athletes were interviewed and asked what it is like was to be coached by their coaches, the athletes talked about the life lessons they had learned from their coach and how they will use them long after their high school playing days are over. So many life lessons are learned through education based athletics and I am proud to represent coaches all across the state that are making a difference in a really unsettling world right now.

I want to wish all the winter activities the greatest success this upcoming season. I hope as I sit down to write my March Prep Coach article I can reference the same positive examples of Educational Based Athletics and how coaches are using it to teach life lessons to their athletes. Go get’em coaches and teams, the winter season is off to a fast and furious start.

On October 13th we held our annual MSHSCA Hall of Fame Banquet. We honored our associations Hall of Fame inductees along with our Championship Coaches, Coaches of the Year and Assistant Coaches of the Year. We also honored recipients of the Officials Distinguished Service Award, Steve Kerzie Award and George Haun Recipients. We also recognized Gary Prantner with the Past Presidents Award for his years of service and leading our organization. There was another group of people recognized at the banquet and I think very highly of this special group-the 25 Year Recipients. To be a coach these days for 25 years is truly a dedication to athletics and a love of the game! This banquet happens only because of the hard, dedicated and outstanding work that Jim and Janet Baker put in to make sure this night goes off flawlessly. Our appreciation is beyond words. Thanks Jim and Janet, it was a great celebration of special people. Mark your calendars for October 12, 2019, and plan to join us. Pictures of the award winners can be found in this publication. Congrats!

Bernie and I have enjoyed traveling around the state to

various sports association clinics, attending a few tournaments, holding meetings. All of these opportunities have given us a chance to meet many of you. We thank all of you for being so welcoming. Our first year as Executive Director and Assistant of the MSHSCA has been fun and rewarding and we look forward to 2019 and making a difference.

In my September article I wrote about the leadership opportunities for individuals to get involved in the MSHSCA and once again I am asking if you are interested in running for the Vice President position that you submit your name to one of our Executive Directors or to me so I can gather information for the upcoming Prep Coach and selection process. In odd number years Class A Regions 1, 2, 3, 4 and Class AA 5, 6, 7, 8 as well as any boy’s or girl’s sports representative may submit their name. I also encourage you to look at the open spots on the delegates list (listed in this Prep Coach) and if there is an opening in your section please consider putting your name in the hat. These positions are filled on a first come basis. By accepting these positions you are asked to attend a meeting in September and also one in March at Mancini’s Char House. You are the liaison that brings information back and forth between your section, other coaches and the MSHSCA. It doesn’t take a lot of time but you do represent all coaches in your region and we need your voice. It is a very rewarding opportunity. I also encourage all of you to join our association and your respective sports association now. You don’t need to wait for your season to begin to join. Take full advantage of the membership benefits members receive all year. The liability insurance alone is invaluable. If you have questions concerning the insurance coverage please contact Greg Joly our representative and he can answer any questions you may have. His contact information is listed on the sheet our membership card arrived on and also on our website. Speaking of website, check it out. It is so full of great information and a way to see what other sports associations are doing. We are also on Facebook and Twitter. See Bernie’s Membership Corner which is in this publication for helpful tips to assist you when registering.

If you are a coach who has dedicated 25 years to coaching athletes, please go online and download the Life Member Application and start that process. You deserve this honor! The process does have a deadline, so make sure you don’t miss it. Those who have met all the criteria are brought forward to the Executive Board in June for approval and once approved you will receive final paperwork which will complete the process. Of course many other nomination processes take place throughout the year for various awards, so please look for more information on our website and be part of nominating deserving people.

As we celebrate the Holiday Season, Bernie and I would like to wish you all a very blessed Merry Christmas, the best to you in 2019. We hope in the craziness of your sports seasons you take some time to enjoy the other people in your life who support all that you do-your family and friends.

The possession of the MSHSCA membership card is a privilege extended to paid up members of the MSHSCA . The use of the MSHSCA card to gain admission to regular season high school events and some college events is controlled by the school at which the card is used to gain admission . There is a variety of policies that schools follow in regards to allowing admission with the card . The MSHSCA is not empowered to dictate to the schools what the school policy should be in terms of accepting the MSHSCA card or the number that will be admitted with each card . A letter is sent to the Activity Directors of all schools in July and all schools are asked to inform us if their school would not accept the card . It has also been brought to our attention over the past that some private venues do not accept the card for admission and this is especially true for hockey schools using private venues for their contests . Park Center does NOT accept Membership Cards for admission.

Resolving ConflictInevitably in any situation where there is competition, there

is bound to be conflict. In sport, the conflict is often generated by not understanding

or agreeing with the coaching philosophy, the offensive/defensive strategy, position assignment, squad selection, playing time, etc., etc.

With all these sources for conflict (and many more), it is HOW one handles these conflicts that matters most is measuring the success in resolving the issue and the character of the persons involved.

Here are few steps to consider for finding a resolution to a conflict:

1. Understand the conflict — Conflicts arise for a variety of different reasons. It is important for you to define clearly your own position and interests in the conflict, and to understand those of your opponent. It is critical to understand what the actual conflict is.

2. Communicate with the opposition — This requires there to be an open and free dialogue. It is OK to have emotion, but don’t make it a personal attack. Express your perspective as clearly and completely why you feel the way you do. Communication requires two things: speaking AND listening.

3. Listen — Opposing opinions are important to you, because their opinions are the source of your conflict. If something is important to them, you need to recognize this. Recognizing does not mean agreeing, of course!

4. Don’t react to emotional outbursts — It is important to remain calm and not be reactionary. Reactionary tends to become retaliatory.

5. Be an active listener — Rephrase what you’re hearing as a question: “Let me see if I’m following you. You’re saying that... Have I got that right?” You can still be firm when you’re listening.

6. Be concrete, but flexible. Speak about your interests, not about your position. After all, you have the entire team and program to be concerned with

7. Avoid early judgments — Keep asking questions and gathering information. Getting the opposition to speak more tends to lead to the actual root of the conflict.

8. Brainstorm possible resolutions—Discuss ways this conflict could be resolved where all involved can feel valued.

9. Layout the plan moving forward — In closing the meeting, clearly restate the plan of action, including each participant’s responsibilities to.

In the end, an open mind willing to listen to opposing views and empathy for the opposing position are needed by all involved to peacefully resolve the conflict. However, ultimately, after weighing all the factors the final decision moving forward falls back on the coach and staff.

It must be recognized that sometimes the best resolution is for the parties involved is to part ways. Best of luck!

We are well into our season already. Most teams have been doing dryland training for the first few weeks. But a few of the lucky ones have access to snow, either man-made or natural. The natural snow is a bit thin and the man-made loops are hamster-like. But this time of year any snow is welcome! Can’t complain!

During Nordic season, I watch the weather almost obsessively. I am hoping for enough of a snowstorm to get everyone onto golf course snow. It doesn’t take much snow to ski on the golf course or a frozen pond. I am hopeful every time the snowfall prediction is for 1 to 3, or 2 to 4 inches. Of course, I always drift to the top end of the forecast.

With our unpredictable weather lately, we have to make sure that we take advantage of the snow when it is here. Hard to predict what next week might be like, much less the next couple of months. Some snow events turn out to be rain events. Rain is never good, and is always tough on my positive mental attitude.

The Fall Meeting was well attended. We had quite a few Vendors that came for the Vendor Fair. This is a nice opportunity for Vendors and Coaches to connect before the season.

Presentations at the Fall Meeting included: Adaptive Skiers – Factor System - BethAnn ChamberlainMN Youth Ski League -Chrissy SniderCXC Updates – Joe Haggenmille

MSHSL Updates. The MSHSL has a current moratorium and will probably

consider the proposed State Meet Format changes at their December Meeting.

MSHSL will be considering options for State Meet Venues. No changes anticipated in the next couple of years.

Flouro Wax Policy. Coaches decided to allow the use of Flouro waxes with the following restrictions:

No Flouro Powder waxes. No ironing/heating of pure Flouro waxes (i.e. blocks or

liquids)Conferences and Invitational Races can always decide to

further limit the use of Flouro waxes for their participants.Club and HS Team issues – It was discussed and agreed that

early and frequent communication is important to help avoid conflicts. Probably cannot avoid all conflicts, but we need to remember that we are all working for the best outcome for each of our athletes.

Season Start date was discussed. Current start is ok if we have snow by December. Not so good if we don’t have snow before Christmas Break. Man-made snow could help on either end of the Nordic Calendar.

Bylaw Voting Rules. A committee was formed to work on the current Bylaw Voting rules. Currently only Head Coaches can vote. Proposal to allow all members to be able

to vote. Committee will investigate options to facilitate more participation while protecting the interests of smaller programs.

Here’s hoping for skiable snow. I can’t wait to get my athletes out and skiing. I get real joy out of watching the experienced skiers learning to ski fast with good technique and watching the beginners learn to move fast enough to stay warm.

Hope to see you out there soon.

Once again it seemed like the cross country season flew by. I hope you all had successful seasons and your athletes were able to reach all of their goals.

Congratulations to the team State Champions. It was an exciting day of races with some great performances.

A special thank you to St. Olaf for their work and all they do to get the course ready. I thought the meet went very well. The use of the new fieldhouse was more convenient and having the separation from fans helped keep the athletes in a more relaxing atmosphere. If you have any concerns about the State Meet please let me know or your Section Rep.

I think the biggest frustration from the State Meet was the lack of live results and the issues with the AA boys race. This is something that we will be looking into and addressing with the MSHSL. We want our State Meet to have the best and most accurate technology and results.

If you haven’t had a chance, check out mn.milesplit.com they do a great job covering cross country in Minnesota. The website has great pictures and interviews from individuals and teams. It also has an extensive list of results from the entire season. I know as a coach, I appreciate this website tremendously.

Take some time in the off-season to relax and evaluate what we can do as coaches to give the best experience possible for our athletes. They are the reason we do what we do so we should always be working to better ourselves and our programs.

Enjoy the Holiday Season with family and friends. Track and Field will be here before you know it.

9MINNESOTA PREP COACH

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by friends and family. Although I am watching snowflakes fall outside my window, I have to remind myself that we are just under 100 days until the start of the 2019 Track & Field season.

Make the most of the offseason and plan to attend the next big event: the 2019 Minnesota Track & Field Coaches Association Clinic held from Thursday, January 24 through Saturday January 26, 2019, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, in Bloomington. As I look through the schedule for this year’s clinic, it is filled with excellent speakers who have an incredible amount of coaching experience. All clinic attendees will have access to:

• More than 48 hours of coaching seminars.• 900 pages of clinic notes.• Three socials. • The 2019 Hall of Fame Induction Banquet.

I hope you are looking forward to returning this year. If you haven’t attended before, I highly encourage you and your staff to check out this annual event which has become one of the premier high school Track & Field clinics in the country.

On Thursday evening of the clinic, we will have our True Team committee meeting as well as the regular Track & Field coach’s association membership business meeting. If you have feedback from last season’s change in the True Team State wild card format or True Team State meet schedule, please plan to participate in the meeting. We decided to change the regular membership meeting to take place Thursday evening after the True Team meeting. Hopefully, this will allow our association to have better attendance and discussion. This change also opens up a time slot on Friday, January 25, for a pre-banquet social outside the banquet hall. Section coaching awards will be handed out during this social.

Information regarding the clinic can be found at www.mshsca.org/track. I hope to see you in Bloomington.

The 2018-2019 dance team season is underway and off to an exciting start! Many teams are eager to get their routines out on the floor and before we know it the 2019 Dance Team State Tournament will be here! Save the date! This year’s state tournament will take place Friday, February 15th & Saturday February 16th, 2019. The jazz tournament will occur on Friday and the kick tournament on Saturday, and will be held at the newly renovated Target Center in Minneapolis. Dance team is a spectator’s sport. At the state tournament be prepared for many passionate dance team fans, friends and family to fill the stands with old time rivalries, traditions, and most importantly support for one another.

Since dance team is not based on seeding or brackets, sections is considered one of the most important performances of the year for any Minnesota dance team. The state is broken into three classes, based on school size; A, AA & AAA. Each class is broken down into four sections, each section consists of anywhere between 10-15 teams. Performance orders for both the jazz and kick categories are chosen at random and the section tournament is typically held at a neutral central site based on assigned teams’ geographic location. The top three in each section for both jazz, and high kick are awarded a trip to the 2019 State Tournament. This year’s sections competitions will take place at various high schools including; Lake City High School (1A), Bloomington Kennedy High School (2A, 1AAA & 3AAA), Montevideo High School (3A), Wadena Deer Creek High School (4A), Kasson Mantorville High School (1AA), Chisago Lakes High School (2AA), Delano High School (3AA), Alexandria High School (4AA), Edina High School (2AAA) & Forest Lake High School (4AAA). Some section tournaments will occur on Saturday February 2nd, 2019, while the remainder will occur on Saturday February 9th, 2019.

When a team advances to the state tournament each dancer on the roster is presented with individual medals and the team a section placement and state participant plaque. Watching teams’ excitement as they are called up to accept their plaque goes down as one of the most exciting moments in dance team, both at the section and state level. If you have never witnessed a dance team before accepting their plaque, we invite you to a section or state competition to check it out. If that doesn’t put a smile on your face and give you goosebumps, I don’t know what will! So many weeks of hard work, determination, dedication and commitment pours out of these dancers, and it truly makes for a few great weekends of athleticism and competition.

If you have attended the dance team state tournament in the past, you are sure to know what to expect! If you have never attended the Dance Team State Tournament, we invite you to join us! Here are some tips! Usually the kick competition day fills the Target Center area very quickly, while if you are attending the jazz day, you have a little more time to find a good general admission seat. If your team is fortunate enough to advance,

coaches and booster cubs are allotted a section of reserved seating in prime locations and parents/fans/family/friends can purchase tickets from them for preliminary competition and the finals competition if their team again is fortunate enough to advance. It’s always good to know ahead of time where reserved seats are versus what seats are available for general admission, as seating for a dance team competition is prime, especially at the state tournament. Also, know which class the team(s) you want to watch are in, and be prepared to sit on the appropriate side of the arena to get a front row action packed seat to cheer on your team. Be prepared, dress comfortably, be prepared to sit most of the day, and most importantly come prepared to cheer for your favorite dance teams!

Each day begins with the qualifying competition. Class A competes first at 11:30am. Each of the twelve teams compete their routine back to back, with a small delay in between for judges to compile their scores. Class A teams compete facing one side of the arena, typically at this time, the opposite side of the arena is filling quickly for the Class AAA fans, while Class AA fans await patiently in the side seats or concourse to switch out for their seats with class A fans. All Class A teams are then invited onto the floor and finalists are announced. Finalists for each class are the top six teams who were awarded the lowest rank points and placed first through sixth during the preliminary competition. We then begin the Class AA and AAA preliminary competitions at 2:00pm. Class AA fans will switch seats with Class A fans, and face the same way. While Class AAA fans will compete facing the opposite side of the arena. Since the AA and AAA prelims go back to back, performances move quickly and efficiently. Concluding the preliminary competition, the twelve Class AA teams are then invited back onto the floor, where the top six are announced as finalists. Class AA teams leave the floor, and quickly Class AAA teams are invited onto the floor where their top six finalists are also announced.

Finalists in each class will compete their routines again during the finals portion of the competition. Order of performance is drawn at random and is not assigned based on preliminary round placements. The finals competition for Class A begins at 5:30pm, followed be the awards ceremony. During the awards ceremony, All Tournament team members are announced, which consists of two dancers from each of the finalists schools. The the top three teams are then announced and presented their state placement medals and MSHSL plaques accordingly. The finals process for Class AA and AAA is the same - the finals competition for Class AA and Class AAA begins at 7:15pm

Tickets can be purchased online through e-tix, the Target Center’s ticketing vendor. The lines in the past have folded out into the skyways at the arena, so purchasing your ticket online in advance is always a good idea. You can visit the MSHSL website for a link to purchase ticket a week or so before the event. You will need a ticket for each day, Friday and Saturday. For a complete schedule, you can visit the MSHSL website concluding February 9th sections. This will tell you preliminary order of performance, which teams advanced and a timeline of what to expect. The schedule stays mostly the same year after year. Here is what to anticipate for this year’s state tournament! (see state schedule on page 19)

Winter sports are well under way but now without many boxes being checked. Here are a few:

1. Coaches ClipBoard2. Facility Reservations3. Bus Schedule4. Hotel Reservations5. Equipment order6. Pictures (Poster with a theme?)7. Preseason meetings with:8. Coaches9. Wrestlers10. Managers11. Parents12. Have you set up your Middle School and Youth

Wrestling programs?13. Fundraisers14. Are you promoting any duals15. Take your kids to a College dual.16. Freestyle, Greco – Post season wrestling opportunities17. Banquet

That’s a baker’s dozen. I know there are many items I left off the list, but this is a good start. Being a head coach is a full time job that requires you to wear many hats. Promoter,

Administrator, Technical expert, Trainer and Counselor. It can be exhausting, but also very fulfilling. Oh and don’t forget your full time profession of teaching or whatever your occupation may be!

In case you missed it, the MWCA coach’s clinic was loaded with a lot of important info. Namely the 14 to 12 proposal. Make sure you communicate with your A.D about the number of weights you will be competing in for Duals and Dual Tournaments. Make sure he or she sends out and receives contracts to indicate 12, 13 or 14 weights. Communicate with the opposing coach to get an understanding ahead of time. The intent of the rule is help programs with less wrestlers have more competitive duals.

Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, Golf and other sports have a TV to educate audiences about what their sport looks like at the highest level. We need to do the same in Wrestling without much assistance from TV. Try to bring info to your high school wrestling room regarding what is going on at the next level in Wrestling. Wrestling is not on TV very often, so we don’t have the built in system of educating our Wrestler about the next level. College Rankings, Dual results, Big Tournaments, Recruits, attend a college dual etc… can be an educational experience. When kids see the next level, it can be very motivating. A great example of showing kids the next level, and how to not lose track of their dreams and goals: J’den Cox, Kyle Dake and David Taylor were all in the same bracket in the 2016 Olympic Trials. In 2018 they are all World Champions.

Most importantly, as we kick off the 2018-2019 season- Have Fun! Wrestling is a very intense activity, and there is a lot of losing! One can easily get lost in the competitive aspect of the sport and lose sight of all the positive things that are going on. Even in the losses there are important lessons, and opportunities for positive and fun discussions.

The start of the winter sports season can only mean one thing, softball is right around the corner! Just wanted to share a couple of things to get you prepared for a great season.

First, save the date for our Winter Coaches Clinic on Saturday, February 2nd. We have some big changes to the clinic this year!! We have partnered with the MN Twins this year for our annual clinic and it will be at Target field. We have also opened this up to all youth coaches as well. In partnering we have drastically reduced the price to $20 and you will receive 4 twins tickets as well. There is an outstanding line up of clinicians that will provide you with information and drills for defense, offense, pitching and team culture. John Tschida- Head Coach St. Thomas, George Wares- Head Coach Central College, Alicia O’Brien- Associate Head Coach Central College, Bailey Bouman- Head Coach Southwest Minnesota State University, Matt Schultz- Innovative Fitness and Cindra Kamphof- Author of Beyond Grit. The clinic is always a good way to network, start the preseason and get those juices flowing. Please encourage your whole staff and youth coaches to attend. One way to grow our game is to get the best coaches possible at those younger levels! Information about the clinic will be found online at http://www.mshsca.org/fastpitchsoftball.

Speaking of the website, other important information can be found there, such as the link for membership, the link to update your win/loss record and the dates for submitting nominations for Academic All-State Individual, Academic All-State Team, All-Star and All-State. Because of turnaround time, the dates listed are firm and there will be no exceptions. Of course, this is all a mute point if you are not a member of the coaches association. If you are not a member yet this year, make sure to do that sooner than later. Not only does this allow you to nominate your student athletes for the post season awards mentioned above, but it also has other benefits. The biggest benefit is our liability coverage. Since many of our programs have coaches that are not paid employees of a school district, this coverage would cover them in case of a situation would call for it. I would strongly encourage every member of your coaching staff to be a part of the association. As a member, you also get into any regular season activity that MSHSL sanctions, as well as some college games. The deadline for membership is April 1st. Also, make sure that you are staying current and up to date on your MSHSL coaches clipboard. Remember, this is where you will find the online rules meeting when it becomes available for the spring sports, and well as information on your continuing education requirements as a coach.

I leave you with this final thought from the great Pat Summitt “Most people get excited about games, but I’ve got to be excited about practice, because that’s my classroom.” Use

Let me start by thanking all head coaches, assistant coaches and diving coaches that put in endless hours and effort well beyond compensation. While it is up to the girls to perform, it is your commitment to them and the sport that allows for the incredible success that we see each season. The state meet just wrapped up and congratulations goes out to the top teams: Class A: 1. Visitation, 2. Hutchinson, 3. Breck and Class AA: 1. Edina, 2. Minnetonka, 3. Wayzata. Thank you to Lisa Lissimore, Chris Aarseth, Jim Marshall and Jen Marshall and all who made the state meet a smooth, fun and memorable experience. The True team section and state meets were a success again this year. They are a great way for teams to show their strength and depth and get everyone involved. This year’s champions were Visitation for A and Minnetonka for AA. As we wrap up the girls season and look forward to the boys, take time to reflect on your job as a coach; creating better athletes and better people through practice and competition. Our annual coaches clinic will be May 3rd and 4th with the All-State Banquet on the 3rd. Both will be held at Minneapolis Marriott NorthWest which is the same location as last year. See you at the pool.

Message from the president:As we skate into December, this is

a good time to briefly reflect on the excellent work that many programs are doing for the overall good of girls’ hockey. Perusing through the MGHCA twitter feed, you will see many examples of teams seeing beyond themselves in order to give back, promote, and/or celebrate accomplishments. Sartell/Sauk Rapids and Champlin Park/Coon Rapids just experienced their annual Adopt-a-Family events. Shakopee is holding a clothing drive for those in need. Forest Lake held a Skate with the Rangers for their youth program. Plus, many, many more examples!

Blake, Roseville, and Benilde-St. Margaret’s honored the gold medal Olympians who graduated from their respective schools with pre-game ceremonies and retiring of jerseys. I experienced the Blake event personally and it was so awesome to see Dani Cameranesi sign autographs for future hockey players for two full periods during the game.

Please keep up the great work of promoting girls’ hockey in your communities and share what you are doing with the MGHCA. We are happy to help promote your events as well through our twitter handle and website. Got a story you want to write? Please do so and share with us! The more we talk, share, and promote, the brighter our sport will shine! …. Shawn Reid, MGHCA President

This season hopefully will be memorable for every high school player. With over half of the season left to go, many more exciting games are left to play. Along with the games, there will be other celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the state tournament, exciting tournaments over the holidays and of course, the MSHSL State Tourney in February. The high school season however doesn’t end there. The week after the state tournament, the MGHCA hosts the all-star Senior Classic and the U18 Festival at the Schwan’s Super Rink in Blaine. 136 senior players and 68 juniors who are U18 eligible will compete in an all-star series for bragging rights and possible selection to the MN Hockey CCM High School National Invitational Tournament in April. Twenty seniors and twenty juniors will be selected to play on these two teams against high school players from other parts of the country. There are many post-season

hockey opportunities for our high school athletes. Coaches should check the MGHCA website, www.MGHCA.com and the Minnesota Hockey website, www.minnesotahockey.org for more information on any of these high

Snap Shots performance programs. Coaches can also contact any of their section reps for info on other MGHCA programs and awards.

We hope everyone has a fantastic holiday season enjoying time with family, friends and teammates and of course by participating in or watching our great sport. Have a happy holiday!!

Goal PostsBy: Ron Stolski - Brainerd

Exec. Director MFCA

Greetings and the best of warm holiday wishes from your MFCA. Seems I think alot about change lately; must be the season. Among the move from season to the next there remains a constant truth. Change is constant, compliance is optional... I thought of that simple, but illuminating phrase. on this morning’s drive. And, in that context, I thought of a time some three decades ago when a very successful coach stood proudly at the podium while being inducted into the MFCA Hall of Fame and , quietly, congratulated all in the room fo being able to accept the challenge of change and grow with it. The telling moment was all the more compelling because he said, paraphrasing, that his career ,while wildly successful, was over. His time had passed. But, concluding, he encouraged every coach in the room to not only accept the constant march of change, but to embrace it. That moment was during another time....and the changes were not nearly as fast and immediate as they are today. Now, change is at warp speed..we all know the reasons,... and we know we must be quick and willing to adapt. There will be no attempt to enunciate all of the the changes in the landscape of football since the eighties, and prior, and the influential role that the MFCA has played in each and every significant initiative, adoption, implementation, of opportunities and programs that the MFCA, in cohort with the MSHSL, have championed. Suffice to say that we have stayed true to our mission statement...’serving and representing football by preserving our past, providing educational opportunities, honoring achievement, valuing good sportsmanship, enhancing and improving the game, and forging a partnership with the MSHSL to develop healthy participation for student athletes..., remains powerful and intact.

There are other truths as well. And, in this season and time of reflection, my hope is that you take some time to take a look back at the past season; your past season and reflect on all the good you and your staff did; had the opportunity to do. Let the wins and losses go. How about the kids you had a chance to touch; to influence. Whether you and your staff had 20, 40, 60, or 80 plus on your team..in addition to all all those beneath yearning to one day wear the colors, Coach, you have influence far beyond your own realization. There are legions of you who ‘do it the right way’. You model and teach life lessons that will last far beyond the final dimming of the lights. Just like the hall of famer who encouraged engagement with the winds of change. Like all hall of famers past and since. Further, during this season of reflection of all things big and small, my hope is that you know that the effort and time you gave to staff, team

and school is worthy and appreciated by the silent hundreds of your life. Finally, and without reservation, this writer’s hope is that , now, you give to your family all that they deserve; all that you have. There will be kids waiting for you again; please reflect and know how important you are to them...as they are to you! I humbly salute you good Keeper..and in this season of blessings, am truly blessed to be a part of the fraternity that is the Keepers of the game!

As we look to 2019, please have confidence that the MFCA will , still, be at the forefront of changes to come and that we will continue to be true to our mission. We will serve, honor, engage and enhance the greatest of games. A game for our youth played by our youth with full knowledge that coaching well remains not just an obligation but a responsibility to ‘do it right’. Even more, an honor who choose to be a keeper.

Happy holidays Coach. See you down the road.

24 MINNESOTA PREP COACH

Each time the MSHSCA Prep Coach arrives in my school mailbox, I turn to see what Detroit Lakes Golf Coach Bob Gorden has written in “Chip Shots.” He’s been writing this for five years (or more), as the Minnesota Golf Coaches Association “Chip Shots” archives go back to Bob’s Spring 2013 column on the MSHSCA website. Those who know Coach Gorden personally are likely not surprised. His tenure as President of our golf coaches’ association is an example of his dedication to the game of golf, and to his sharing that dedication with the younger generation.

I’ve known Bob since 2005, when I became head boys golf coach at Moorhead High School. Moorhead and Detroit Lakes are about 44-miles apart, as the crow flies. (They’re about 45-miles apart, as the car drives – it’s flat and roads are straight in our part of the great state of Minnesota.) Back then, more senior coaches will recall there were only two MSHSL golf classes, A and AA. Bob’s teams and mine competed against each other, and the rest of Section 8AA, for the Section title and the trip to State.

I’ve gotten to know Coach Gorden pretty well over the years. One thing has stuck with me since the beginning: Bob’s focus in golf coaching has always been on his student athletes first. He is not one who seeks the limelight for himself. So, hopefully he won’t mind if I share a recent

story, because I doubt if he’d tell it to you himself.

Last spring, I attended the Class AA State High School Golf Banquet at The Park Ballroom in New Prague. Of course, the focus was first and foremost on the girls and boys AA State Tournament qualifying teams and individuals. Most attendees were family and friends of the competitive golfers, and they were there, naturally, to recognize and honor their players and teams.

But part of the evening’s program included the presentation of two new Hall of Fame Coaches – Dan Kehrberg, the highly successful 30-year boys golf coach at Fairmont High School, and Detroit Lakes’ Bob Gorden, head boys golf coach from 2000 to the present. Bob’s teams have qualified for the AA State Golf Tournament seven times, and have won the Championship three times, first in 2008, then back-to-back in 2011 and 2012.

Those present to witness Coach Gorden’s Hall of Fame induction included all six players from the 2008 Lakers’ State Championship team. Some may have been surprised that one of Bob’s ’08 players in attendance was Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen. After all, doesn’t an NFL star have other things to do? But to those of us who know Bob it wasn’t too surprising. (Not too surprising, but really cool!) Bob’s players, past and present, recognize a good, caring, dedicated coach when they see one.

Therefore, as my first action as the new Minnesota High School Golf Coaches Association President, I say thank you, and well done, to Coach Bob Gorden for your selfless service on behalf of Minnesota golf coaches and our great game of golf.

32 MINNESOTA PREP COACH

CORNERKICKS

By: Ron Kruschwitz North St. Paul Boys (retired) Soccer Communications Officer

As I sit down to write this, I am reminded that the seasons have changed and there is snow and cold outside my sun porch. The 2018 soccer season came to a close with year three at U.S. Bank Stadium. What great place to play in November. The MSHSSCA want to again thank the Minnesota State High School League and US Bank staff for making it a great venue and time.

The listed below are the teams that were crowned state champions for 2018 and their head coach.

Girls Aqq Dave Waldq MahtomediGirls AAq Jeff Hopkinsq MinnetonkaBoys A Blake School Tamba JohnsonBoys AA Jake Smothers Stillwater

The 2018 State Tournament Banquet was held at the River Centre. It has two sessions to accommodate all 32 teams. Once again we want to thank Dave Haltgren and his staff for an excellent banquet. We also want to thank Andrea Winiecki for her outstanding job as Banquet Coordinator. She is the MSHSSCA person in charge.

The MSHSSCA awards to Ms. and Mr. Soccer are awarded each year at the State Tournament banquet. These awards represent the outstanding soccer player in each class. From the list given to the All-State Committees, five are chosen and then a winner is determined. The four athletes listed below are the 2018 Ms. and Mr. Soccer.

Class A Ms. Soccer Kk Haug Blake SchoolMr. Soccer Herbert Endeley Totino-Grace

Class AAMs. Soccer Megan Plaschko EaganMr. Soccer Tayeb Benjaafar Minneapolis Washburn

At the banquet we also honor the coaches and assistant coaches who have been selected by a committee, to be the Coaches of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year.

Girls A Coach of the Year Marie Barrientos Winona CotterGirls A Assistant Coach of the Year Tom Piche East Grand ForksGirls AA Coach of the Year Tracey Griess AndoverGirls AA Assistant Coach of the Year Jason Aatonson ArmstrongBoys A Coach of the Year Scott Anderson Duluth Denfeld

Boys A Assistant Coach of the Year Brian Davidson St. CharlesBoys AA Coach of the Year Corey Bachand Duluth EastBoys AA Assistant Coach of the Year Wyatt Wagner Farmington

These coaches have been selected to represent all those coaches that dedicate a fall season to working with student athletes.

Each year the MSHSSCA coach’s goal is to get 100 percent of our coaches to join the association. Under the direction of John Seipp (Trinity at River Ridge) we have concluded an excellent membership drive. Below are listed the number of coaches in each class and an overall total.

CLASS GIRLS BOYS TOTAL A 87% 79% 83%AA 100% 100% 100%TOTAL 91% 86% 89%

That is a small increase from 2017. There are some schools that play a junior varsity level program as they begin high school soccer.

We enjoyed a new venue for the BSN/MSHSSCA Senior Classic indoors at Woodbury. Thanks to the new Co-Coordinator Sarah Neitz (Park of Cottage Grove-Girls) we found a new home. Sarah has become a very valuable coordinator. The Boys Black team coached by Jake Smothers and his Stillwater soccer staff outscored the White Team 4-2.that was coached by Tamba Johnson and his Blake School staff. In the girls game the Girls White team coached by Jeff Hopkins and his Hopkins staff outscored the Black team coached by Dave Wald and his Mahtomedi staff 4-2. Both games were examples of outstanding soccer and the players expressed how much they had enjoyed the game.

To make a Classic a success there are many people that contribute to the effort. To Steve Witt and Robert Lamb for their work as announcer and time keeper, I say thanks. To Dr. Jake Wessels and trainer Nicole Bruer who are the medical staff on site, we thank you for the time. To the parent Doctor from Mahtomedi for stepping in, thanks. To Art Seplak, Berry Arrowsmith, Keith Randa and Greg Juba from the Executive committee of the association a much needed expression of gratitude for all your help.

In every event there are special people who every year step up and fill a job that is critical to the event. These two, team managers for 15 years have been an integral part of the classic. Chrissy Makela (Mankato West Girls) and Len Woeflel (Mankato West Boys) are these two incredible people. As I have previously stated they are the “PRIDE OF MANKATO. A very special mention of the Jeff Reif the printer for ISD622. You do a super job of printing, even though it is always last minute.

The last thank you goes to my wife Peggy. She does all my proof reading and keeping me aware that I have to keep the game of soccer and life in perspective. The classic could never be successful without your help.

A quick note to Jason Arnebeck(Park of Cottage Grove Boys) our President. We have missed you this season and wish that you recover from your concussion. It has been a very long recovery and we really missed you at the classic. Get Well!

33MINNESOTA PREP COACH

The three class system is still being worked on. Your executive committee is working with the MSHSL and will attend a meeting on December 5 when the proposals are being discussed at the League Office.

Art Seplak(Bloomington Kennedy Retired) informs the column that the Mike Worter Scholarship Award forms are due will be soon due. Coaches have your senior players check the website. There are two one thousand dollar scholarships available to a soccer player, one for a girl and one for a boy.

If you are wondering where the Hall of Fame Award announcement is, I left it at the end. The person being inducted into the Hall of Fame is one of the most deserving soccer coaches in Minnesota High School soccer. The MSHSSCA wants to welcome our new Hall of Fame Member, Bill Vance(Totino Grace Boys). Please read parts of the introduction to his honor that was read to the State Tournament banquet by Keith Randa, our Executive Secretary:

Bill Vance has been working with the MSHSSCA for the past 16 years. He is a well-respected coach within the association. He coordinates the Hall of Fame Committee as well as MSHSL Advisory Committee and other jobs. His coaching record as a head coach is 215-79-23 a .700 winning percentage.

In words of rival coach. “His teams are always well disciplined and respectful, and that is a direct reflection of the coach. He is a great teacher of the game to his players but more importantly, a positive role model to his players and other coaches. Bill treats his players with dignity and respect and holds each of the responsible for their behavior.”

A story highlighting the essence of what makes Bill special comes from a former player and current head coach. “In 2001, I starting attending Totino-Grace midway through the school year. I walked in, put my stuff in a locker and went straight to my homeroom. I put my head down, praying for the day to be over. A couple of minutes later I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up and there was Bill, coming into my homeroom to wish me luck on my first day of school. I did not know Bill was a teacher there. Those two minutes of my day were enough to give me strength and calm my nerves. I knew that if he worked there, it had to be a good place.”

There are more things that can be said about Bill and his life with kids, families, volunteer hours, multiple state titles, a coaching tree that continues to grow throughout the country

and immeasurable respect and reverence from his colleagues. Thanks Bill for all you have done, your accomplishments

and now welcome to the MSHSSCA Hall of Fame. You are most deserving.

That is it for this time. I hope that you and your family enjoy the holiday season and remember you can be thankful for having the best job in the world, working with student athletes as the endeavor to be the best person they can be.

COACHES CARING PROGRAMDo you know of a Minnesota high school coach who is facing a catastrophe and could use some financial assistance?

You can nominate a coach for a $100 .00 Coaches Caring assistance donation by emailing your nomination to Rick Ringeisen at rringerr@aol .com

When you nominate a coach for a Coaches Caring assistance donation, remember to provide background information for the committee to review .

DUGOUT CHATTER – Dec. 2018By: Rick Zollner – Pipestone AreaPresident MSHSBCA

Once again the John Wilkens fall clinic was well attended and our association had a very successful HOF Awards Banquet. A sincere thank you to John Wilkens and his family for their continual work to make this event run so smoothly. A special thanks to Paul Twenge who once again brought in a terrific group of clinicians. A huge shout out to all the vendors and their support and to our host the Delta Hotels by Marriott. If you know a coach deserving recognition check out all our awards and make a nomination. You can find all this past year’s award winners at our website www.mshsbca.org.

The MSHSBCA wants to recognize the 2018 HOF inductees: Rob Fornasiere, Mike Louden, John Madsen, Ray Ross, Randy Schaub, Jeff Tanner, and Tyrone Wacker. Thank you gentlemen for your time and service to the game of baseball and giving your all to your players!

The 2019 baseball season is less than 100 days from opening, but the convention and clinic season is hitting on all gears. The BCA clinic in St. Louis, MO, runs from November 30 thru December 2. The 75th ABCA clinic in Dallas, TX, runs from January 3-6, 2019. If you are looking for something closer the St. Olaf clinic will be on January 26, 2019. Coach McDonald has a tremendous group of clinicians lined up for this event! Please check the www.mshsbca.org website for more information on that date as well as other possible clinics.

There are no major rule changes to high school baseball for the 2019 season. The MSHSL Coaches Clipboard opens March 11 and closes on March 27th. Have all your coaches complete this. All pertinent rule changes will be listed there. Also, please update your roster and schedule before your first game. The arm care/conditioning week is March 11-15. Regular baseball practice starts March 18th and first games can take place on March 28th.

The high school baseball tournament will again be held at the same sites as last year with the finals being at Target Field. With that said, there will be some date changes. Class A, AA, AAA will play on June 13-14. Due to a St. Paul Saints game at CHS Field class AAAA will play June 14-15. The biggest change will be the championship games being played on Thursday, June 20 at Target Field (the Twins have a home series earlier in the week).

The Play Ball! MN All-Star Series also has a date change.

The six team tournament will be played on June 28-29 at the beautiful Chaska ballfield. Selection Sunday will again be hosted by the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on May 19th. Sadly the Twins are out of town that day. We thank the Twins for their continued support of high school baseball. Thanks also to our other GOLD sponsors Cambria and BIG Athletics. Due to their generosity, our association has been able to make some major donations to many worthy organizations such as: The Miracle League, ALS, Stand-Up to Cancer, Coaches for Coaches, MDA, and scholarships to graduating high school baseball players. Thank you Don Gawreluk (now Past-President) for all the time and effort you put towards making the series a wonderful experience for players and families! You can check all timelines for the Series and scholarship information at www.mshsbca.org.

If you have not joined the MSHSCA it’s not too late. There are many benefits to joining like liability coverage and being able to nominate your players for post season awards. The Twins again will be offering tickets to their games but you must belong to the association to receive this benefit. To help promote our sport and players nominate them to the Breakdown Sports magazine. Coaches should have received emails about picture days around the state of Minnesota. So get your players signed up! Continue to visit our website as it is updated frequently, and follow us on Twitter @MSHSBCA. A huge shout out to Todd Smrekar for running such a wonderful website! If you have games or scrimmages you are looking to fill or new records for the list, keep sending them to [email protected]. Thanks Tink, for all of your work! I want to thank Alan Amdahl, past president, for his service and leadership! Alan helped the association accomplish many great things over the past eight years. Please welcome Dean Schwirtz from Glencoe-Silver Lake as he begins his service on the board. He was elected via online voting this fall. If you are a new coach, do not hesitate to reach out to local coaches for help and guidance. Also, if you have questions, ideas, or concerns please contact me at: [email protected] “Remember seven days without baseball makes one weak!”

36 MINNESOTA PREP COACH

MEMBERSHIP CORNERBernie SchumacherAssistant to the Director

Hi MSHSCA Members! I hope you are finding this article helpful when registering for your memberships and clinics. Over the last year when we took over the organization we have received many questions on many topics. It is our goal to continue to provide members services and assist you in anyway we can. So I thought this might be a great tool to add to the Prep Coach and you will it helpful to understand your Membership to the MSHSCA and registration questions. Here are some of the most often asked questions:

1) Where do I sign up for my MSHSCA membership? Go online to www.mshsca.org. On there you will see a dark green registration bar on the front page. Follow that and it will guide you to the registration area. Make sure thou when you are logging in that you are not logging into the white word “login” at the top of the home page. That will take you to sport engine and not to the registration portion you need to get at.

2) I forgot my password. We worked hard this past year with our website designer to get the “forgot password” portion of our system working. We think we finally have the bugs out. It is important though after you request your password that you look in your spam, as we are finding the password response goes there often. This option will not work thou if your email address you used last year has been changed and is no longer working. You will have to contact me for personal assistance if that is the case.

3) My email address has changed and is not active. The registration system that we are working with is email specific and the system doesn’t care if your email address works or not. Think of your email as an ID only. We know many schools are changing their emails. The one most important thing to remember is hat you must go into the system with the last email and password that you used or signed up your membership with the previous year. Get yourself registered first and once registered you can go back in and edit any of your information, from mailing address, phone number, email and even your password. Do right away after you registered thou, especially if your address has changed so that when we print your card we have the correct mailing address. You know that old saying; “Garbage in garbage out?” How you type your name, address etc. in your profile is how it will come out on your membership card. So type carefully and accurately. Key point…you must get yourself registered into the current system (Membership year/school year) first in order to edit. We are finding people register, but they don’t look at their profile information and addresses have changed and not updated and your card ends up coming back to us. Please make sure to always keep your profile up to date which you can update anytime throughout the year. There is an edit button to the left of your Profile, click on that when wanting to edit.

4) Assistant Coach vs Head Coach. When registering, make sure that if you are a Head coach that you check the little box below the sport you selected. If you don’t check that, then you won’t come up as a head coach in the system and athletes won’t qualify for postseason awards. Many notice that they aren’t listed as head coach when they get their card and then we have to go through another process to get it corrected.

5) Section Selections. Finally, The Sports Associations need you make sure when registering, to not only select your sports that you coach but please make sure to select what SECTION you are in. They use this information and are finding out many coaches are skipping this step in the registration. It is important to fill in all areas of your profile, properly select your sport, if you are a head coach or not, and also your section. This information is needed by your sport’s associations.

6) Receipts. This year we added a registration receipts link so that you can go back any time and print your receipt. It won’t give you a break down, but it gives you a grand total of Memberships you have signed up for the year. It is best to print your receipt right when you finish registering when it prompts you as that will give you a breakdown. This is also the paperwork you can turn into your school if they refund you or will be paying for your membership.

7) Coach different sports at different schools. This is more complicated than I am able to explain here, so please give me a call to work through this process.

8) Clinics. Remember, when registering for clinics for various sports associations, some require you to be a member of the MSHSCA and their sports association in order to attend their clinics. It is best to register for the clinic and your memberships all at one time so not to slow your registration process down at the clinic. Registering in advance to clinic’s is recommended.

9) Life Membership. After you have coached for 25 years, you can apply for a Life Membership to the MSHSCA. Details are on our website at www.mshsca.org. There is special rules to become a member and all applications that come in before May 15th each year and qualify are presented to the Board of Directors in June of each year. Once you are approved, you will be notified and the final application process will be can take place.

10) When can I sign up for my Membership? You can sign up anytime once the registration year has begun which is usually up and running by April. Even if you are a winter or spring coach for the coming year, you can sign up for all of your sports at anytime. Why wait until March to sign up for spring sports and not use your membership for the whole year. Your membership includes a liability insurance policy that is usable from Aug 1-July 31st. So sign up now, take advantage of your benefits for the whole membership year. Make sure to select the correct Membership Year. There is a 3 month window from April-June that we have 2 membership years running. We find many times coaches will sign up in the wrong year. So think of the school year, your season is taking place. Example: Fall sports that is now completed for the 2018 season. When signing up again,

MSHSCA SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOROFFICIALS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

The Minnesota State High School Coaches Association has always been aware of the value of officials as an integral part of the high school athletic programs could function

without the dedication that is currently being provided to prep sports by the many officials in Minnesota.

A few years ago, the MSHSCA, in an effort to restore sportsmanship, as it should be, to the stands of high school sporting events, created an Officials Distinguished Service Award.

Coaches who are aware of the outstanding officials in your area that qualify for the award should either nominate the officials directly or contact the area officials associations and urge them to submit the deserving candidates for the award .

This award is presented to five deserving officials at the MSHSCA’a Annual Awards Banquet that is held each year in November .

The MSHSCA has maintained a collective file of nominations but is currently looking for more nominations of the many deserving officials that need to be recognized for their long time service to minnesota high school sports .

Nominations to receive the Officials DSA can be submitted by using the following criteria .

1. Should still be an active official.2. Have been a high school official of varsity competition for

at least 25 years .If you know of a deserving official in your area that satisfies theestablished criteria, complete the accompanying nomination form and send to:Mike Peterson458 3rd St SW • Perham, MN 56573

make sure that you register for the 2019-2020 membership year. With so many people using their phones to sign. Up and things saving links/history. It is recommended that you go into the www.mshsca.org site each time you sign up because the registration link changes every year. So the link your use this year will not be the correct one and you could end up signing up for things in the wrong year. Start fresh off the Website every year.

11) What happens if I sign up for a fall sport and then later in the year find out that I will be coaching a winter or spring sport? Just log back in and register/add your new sport that you are coaching and you will only becharged for the additional Sports Association fee. The system will not let you register for something twice. BUT REMEMBER...to always use the same email address. Some members have multiple email addresses for various reasons and you could duplicate if you don’t use the same one.

12) The MSHSCA Website is a very valuable tool that gives you more details and information about our organization, your sports associations and so much more. Please find some time to wander through it so you know what it all offers you. The electronic version of the MSHSCA Prep Coach is on there too.

13) How can I get involved with MSHSCA? If you would ever like to become a delegate to the MSHSCA, be a President to your specific Sport Association or be on the Board of Directors, please feel free to contact us, a board member or your President of your association and express your interest. We are always looking for Coaches who are dedicated to athletics not only the teams you coach, but athletes and education-based sports throughout the State of Minnesota. We have openings for Delegate positions we would like to see filled. So please look over the list and see if there is an opening for your section that needs representation.

These are the main questions we often get. If there is a specific question you need answered, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or call 218-732-0204. We continue to look at ways to make registering and our website more user friendly. We appreciate your commitment to education based athletics.
