Promoting “champion citizens, notjust champion tennis players,” formerPresident George Bush and his wifeBarbara joined friends of the USTAT&EF at the 4th Annual OPENingNight Gala on August 30.
Bush spoke of his family’s longfriendship with Foundation PresidentPam Shriver and humorously recount-ed matches between the Hall ofFamer and his children. “We’ve hadsome wonderful times playing dou-bles and it’s a great reminder of thebenefits of tennis—like friendships,
sportsmanship, a healthy sense of competition…it’s just a terrific game for everyone.”The 4th Annual Opening Night Gala and other 2004 US Open-related events raised over
$400,000 to benefit the USTA Tennis & EducationFoundation.
At the Gala, Patrick McEnroe served as Master ofCeremonies, and joined Foundation President PamShriver in leading a live auction featuring tickets tothe 2005 Super Bowl, lunch and afternoon matchesin the USTA President’s Box, and passes to 2005 golfevents, the Masters and US Open.

From Pam Shriver
This year’s US Open was as exciting as ever and I love stillbeing a part of it—now from a broadcast booth and in my roleas President of the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation.
Whether they won or lost, we saw champions in action—players who gave 110 percent and had fans alternatingbetween sitting on the edges of their seats and leaping to theirfeet cheering.
Off court, the Foundation also had a thrill-packed twoweeks, starting with the Annual OPENing Night Gala andending with the Annual ProAm. It is remarkable to see thatwhat began as ideas have grown into annual events that gener-ate funds for grants to community tennis programs around thecountry and college scholarships for disadvantaged high schoolseniors. The OPENing Gala was our 4th Annual, the ProAmwas the 2nd Annual and the enthusiasm for each event is socontagious!
I am so grateful to President George Bush and his wife,Barbara, for taking time from their busy schedules to be ourspecial guests and attend this year’s Gala. I treasure theirfriendship and I am so honored that they helped support theFoundation.
Thanks also to Harman International for their second yearsponsorship of our ProAm.
Kudos to my tennis buddies, Mark Bey, Peter Fleming, BrianGottfried, Jim Grabb, Tom Gullikson, Luke and MurphyJensen, John Lloyd, Gretchen Magers, Bill Mountford, HankPfister, Richey Reneberg, Joanne Russell, Mike Sell and EliotTeltscher, who hit the courts bright and early to give “the Ams”a day to remember.
Thank you to the USTA Board, staff and volunteers for theirhelp throughout the US Open.
Last, but certainly not least, many thanks to you for yourgenerosity—together we are “building lives through tennis andeducation.”
Best wishes for a joyful holiday season!

2nd Annual ProAm Benefits the Foundation The 2nd Annual Pro Am at the US Open presented by Harman International
was a great success and raised $85,000 to benefit the USTA Tennis & EducationFoundation.
During the second week of the 2004 US Open, the event gave amateurs anopportunity to play with tennis greats and Grand Slam winners on match courtsat Flushing Meadows, and provided a firsthand experience of what it’s like to bea US Open player.
Each of the amateur participants, several of whom were returning playersfrom last year’s event, were paired with senior touring pros, including JohnLloyd, Luke and Murphy Jensen, and Tom Gullikson, who volunteered to par-ticipate in this fundraising event. The $5,000 amateur participation fee includedbreakfast in the official Player Dining Room, two invitations for the women’ssemifinal matches and lunch in the comfort of a luxury suite. Good news from our funded programs…“We believe that our grant from the USTA Tennis & Education Foun-dation has enabled us to be viewed as a viable, sustainable program. Wehave since received grants from the UPS Foundation and the OlympicClub Foundation. Both foundations have indicated an interest in con-tinuing to support our program after this cycle of funding is complete.”

“School attendance has improved dramatically. For the most recentrecords available [2002-03 school year], 13 percent of the elementaryschool students missed 21 or more days of school. In the 2003-04 schoolyear, not one MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation child missed 21 ormore days of school. In fact, most did not miss in the double digits…inaddition, conduct and homework completion have improved.”
