National PTA Reflections Arts

Recognition Program

• “Reflections” was started in 1969 by Mary Lou Anderson, then Colorado State PTA President.

• >10 million student participants Pre-K to 12th Grade.

• Not a contest, but a program.

• 2015-16 Theme: “Let Your Imagination Fly”

• 6 Art Areas: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts (now 2D AND 3D!)

Benefits of Participation:

• Students Unleash Creative talents and be inspired!• Students Express Themselves imaginatively with

artwork.• Students Experience Joy of making art.• Students Tap into Critical Thinking Skills to create art

inspired by the annual theme.• Students Receive Positive Recognition for original

works of art (Local to State to National).

Start With The Basic Steps:

#1 – Be a Unit in Good Standing

• Local PTA units must be deemed to be in “good standing” in order to fully participate in the PTA programs.

(i.e. Reflections and benefits offered by the association)

A PTA Unit is “in good standing” if it:• Adheres to Purposes and Basic Policies of PTA;• Remits National and State Dues to MO PTA by 1st of each month

• Has Bylaws approved every 3 years according to the procedures of MO PTA

• Submits copy of Unit’s Fiscal Year End Report to the MO PTA by December 1st

• Submits copy of the unit’s annual financial review (formerly known as the audit) to the MO PTA by December 1st

• Submits copy of the required IRS Tax Form to MO PTA by December 1st

• Submits Names and Addresses of officers to the MO PTA by March 31st

• Meets Other Criteria as may be prescribed by the MO PTA.

Form a committee: Don’t be a “Lone Ranger”

Be informed: Utilize Local, State, National Resources

Make a Time Line: Map out the process, step by step.

Enlist Art Judges: Do this early so they can plan their own calendar.

Reflections Special Artist Division

Traditional Grade Division: – Grade Division that most

closely aligns to functional abilities.

– Recognized without regard to special need or challenge.

Special Artist Division:– Non-graded (i.e. PK-2)– Meets A.D.A. guidelines.– Can receive non-artistic

accommodation and assistance.

The Deadline for advancing artwork to the State Round of judging is: Thursday, December 10, 2015

This earlier deadline has great advantages:• Holidays and No School Days• Time for Preparing Artwork for

Preparing for “Blind” Judging

• Number the entry on the entry form, (i.e. VA 100 (Visual Arts) then #s beginning with 100 are your primary level, 200 = intermediate, 300 = MS, 400 = HS, 500 = Special Artists)

• Use painter’s tape & perm. marker to number artwork

• Make a copy of the entry form Cut off the student’s info and secure to back of artwork. Allows judges to see only title and artist’s statement

This form can be used by students entering a Local PTA Reflections program or for student winners to gather necessary information for completing the official Online Student Entry Process to advance to the next round in the National PTA Reflections Competition. In Missouri all student entries must be entered in the Online Registration System .

Why “Blind” Judging?

• Reduces concerns of favoritism. – Remind students not to

“sign” name to artwork– If signed on front, use

painter’s tape to cover name on photography & visual arts.

• Anonymity is almost impossible on dance & film

5. Reflections Uploading Phase(in brief)

• 3 Entries per Division per Art Category

• Entries are submitted online only on the National PTA’s website

–Local School PTA Unit holds it own recognition program.

–Local School PTA Unit Advances no more than 3 entries per division per category online to mopta for the State Round of competition.

2. MO PTA State Recognition

1. 1st thru 5th place, and usually up to 6 Honorable MentionA. Award Winners announced in March.B. Unit Presidents and Reflections chairs are notified by

email. Winner’s list is also posted on the MO PTA website

C. Students receive special invitation to Reflections Student Showcase. Details to be announced.

D. 1st Place award recipients in each category and grade division advance to National Competition.

3. National Recognition

Outstanding Interpretation Awards- 7 awarded

Awards of Excellence – 3 awarded per Division per Each Arts Area

Awards of Merit – Up to 5 Awards per Division of Each Art Area

Honorable Mention - All Remaining Students Reaching National Level
