THE ROAD TO THE REFORMATION

FEATURE

OCTOBER 22–23FAMILY CENTER

A GRACE EQUIP EVENT WITH DR. STEVE LAWSONAs Christians, we understand that history does not happen in a vacuum of human autonomy. As God works His plan of redemption in and through humanity, He sovereignly weaves events and lives together across time and space to bring His purposes to bear.

The road to the Reformation of the sixteenth century is a powerful example of this biblical truth. While much attention is rightly given to the Reformers’ fight for biblical doctrine and practice that eventually led to the necessary split from the Roman Catholic Church, there is also much to learn from the pre-Reformation era. God raised up key individuals long before the Reformation began—men who forged the path leading to this all-important seismic shift in church history.

On October 22–23, Dr. Steve Lawson will be joining us to unpack the lives of three of these individuals—John Wycliffe, Jan Hus, and Martin Luther—drawing lessons from the way that they were used by God to move history forward.

We will begin with John Wycliffe, rightly deemed the “Morning Star of the Reformation,” as he set the stage with his unshakable conviction to translate the Bible from Latin into English. Next, we will witness Jan Hus join the fray as he discovered the writings and convictions of Wycliffe and championed the return

from church tradition to the authority of Scripture. Finally, we will finish with a study of Martin Luther, whose heroic boldness became the flame which illumined the corruption of Rome through his prolific writing and pulpit ministry.

Join us on “The Road to the Reformation” as we walk through the lives of these faithful men and witness God’s sovereign handiwork on display. We will learn what led to this unprecedented movement that shook the world, and how God might use us as He continues to reform His church.

Evangelism Ministries The Bible describes Christians as ambassadors for Christ—those who were saved to “proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). One of the most joyful duties we have is to proclaim this great gospel to others. To this end, Grace Church members hold evangelistic Bible studies in jails, assisted living facilities, and hospitals. Groups also go door-to-door right here in our own neighborhood.
