We’re asking each neighborhood to join forces and create a float for this year’s Fall Festival. The theme for this year’s parade is “Vision Crescent” so something your group would like to see in Crescent’s future. Whether it be sidewalks, bike trail, community center or green space. Use you imagination! The best float wins a trophy and pizza for the neighborhood. Be sure to assign a leader and have them call Kris Smith at the number below. She’ll add your float to the line up and give you the details. We also need floats and participation from local businesses, horse groups, youth groups, tractors people, car people, etc. And if you’re able to volunteer, please let us know. Let’s make it a great parade! Contact Kris Smith at 712-545-3118 or [email protected].

Thank You! To Brenda Gryskiewicz and her family for donating pleated fan flags to the Veterans’ Monument. Every year, the Gryskiewicz’s give something to the park in honor of Brenda’s late husband, Bob, who died of cancer in 2008. These flags are a nice addition to the picnic shelter and will be used for all future flag holidays. Thanks Brenda and family!

What’s Up at CECC?Submitted by Linda & Mindy Brewer
Summer at a child care center has a slightly different feel. Everyone is a bit more relaxed. Even the school-age kids bring show and tell, often related to going on vacation somewhere or some special activity they are doing this summer. Show and tell is often longer than during the preschool school year, as people have lots to say. We are glad to have back, for the summer, the kids who go to different school districts during the year. We have missed them. We also have some new kids, Lane, Lucas, Adam and Vickie. We are enjoying getting to know them. The trick to a successful summer program is balancing the academic with the “fun”. We are taking advantage of the C.B. Library Story Time in Crescent. Every Thursday at 11:30 in the community room, one of the librarians reads books and does other activities with the kids. It is open to everyone in the area, and we encourage all kids in Crescent to come. One of our teachers, Teri Shook, has signed all the kids up for the summer reading program through the Missouri Valley Library. They keep track of books they read, and she turns the sheets into the library. At the end, there will be prizes! We also read chapter books to the kids after lunch every day. Most of the younger kids fall asleep in their cots, and even some of the older kids give in to a nap. The curriculum topic we have talked about in June has been the rain forest. To add atmosphere to that topic, it has rained a lot. Every time we have scheduled water play or a walk to the park, it has rained. It may seem silly to cancel water play because of rain, but we need the sun to dry people off and warm them up. It even rained on our planned picnic to Big Lake. We ended up having a picnic on the floor of the center. We did put on a nature video so we could pretend we were picnicking at Yellowstone, bears and all. The center had a few tables out during the city-wide yard sale a few weeks ago. It was a good chance for us to “recycle” toys to other kids who might enjoy them. We also sold items that had been donated to us by others - thank you to Shirley Collins, Mike Harmon, Pat Bigelow and Teri Shook who all donated items for us to sell. We also had a table of baked goods to sell, and they were very popular as well. Thank you to Shirley Collins, Amy Freeman, Pat Bigelow and Troy Thomason who donated baked goods. We didn’t set a price on anything we sold - it was all by donation, and people were quite generous. The money that we raised will go to help fun our summer program at the center. Thank you to everyone for their support and generosity.
Mayor’s Corner
Well, here it is the beginning of July. Summer is passing fast! This past week there was a pre-construction meeting for repaving of the Old Lincoln Hwy. The project will run from July 7 to the middle of October. They are paving from the county line north of Loveland to city limits of Council Bluffs. The first thing they will do is repair the damaged areas. They will have one lane blocked during the days and hopefully opened by the nighttime. It will try everyone’s patience at times. We should try and use I-29 as much as possible. It will be nice when this project is complete. —Brian Shea
For many years now, the Jensen’s and “Justin’s Crew”, as they call themselves, have been whipping up pies to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes. It’s a cause that’s dear to their hearts as Justin, shown above, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 20 months. The apple, peach, and cherry pies made from Grandma’s recipe are available every Father’s Day at the Firebarn Breakfast. This year they sold 97 pies, 50 of which were sold before they got there. Shown in the photo above are Crew members, Aunt Pat, Cindy Freese, Grandma Hamilton, Cousin Michell, Justin’s Dad, Mike and Cousin Morgan.
In Honor of Small Business
A reader asked that we share this in honor of Small Business Week. No, they don’t own a local business, but they do understand the importance of them. Who’s your friend? Is it the big box store that makes you feel like a number, where you’re frustrated because nobody knows where anything is, you have to wait in line to be treated rudely by someone who couldn’t care if they ever saw you again, and made you feel like you were a bother to their day? Or would it be the small business that smiles and calls you by name as you walk in, where you get helped every time you turn around, where they tell you they set something back for you when it came in because they just knew you’d want it, where they know what item you need for your family without asking, because they’re your friend, neighbor, and possibly shirt-tail relation? That’s what keeps America’s Small Businesses going, their caring and friendliness, and what Crescent Area Businesses the best place to call. BAR NONE! When you complain because the street needs fixed, think about where you spend your money, and which town got your tax dollars to fix their streets, was it yours?
Way to Go, Justin’s Crew!

3rd Annual Lincoln Highway Buy Way Yard Sale
This year we are trying something different. A form on our website has been created so that people can register their sales for the Buy-Way. If you go to www.IowaLincolnHighway.org, you can see
an announcement for the sale right on the front page. Click “Tell me more” and you’ll go to the main information page for the sale. There, just click on the link that says “click here to sign up your sale for the Buy-Way.” By the end of July you’ll be able to print a complete list of sales in your area. This will eliminate the need for flyers. We are also looking for volunteers to assist with the event. If you have any ideas that would help us or any questions feel free to call Deb Rothmeyer at 712-263-8356 or email [email protected]
Words of Wisdom for Kids You have chores, because we love you. They seem tedious, but they are the building blocks for your future. Responsibility, accountability, and basic life skills begin with sweeping the floor, scrubbing the toilet, and feeding pets and livestock. We love you, we want you to find success in life. Success comes from preparation, so we give you chores. Boredom is a choice. Don’t let me hear you say you are bored. Boredom is a choice, when your backyard is the whole outdoors, there are chores to be done, and books to be read. There is magic in watching the sunrise. Early mornings are hard, we don’t rise as early and as easily as Dad. Do it anyway. The beauty you will witness with the awakening of the world is worth sleepy eyes and cold fingers. A pet is more than a companion. Your cats, dogs, calves, and ponies are more than friends and playmates. They are lessons in empathy, responsibility, love, and letting go. Grow your own food. Our world is increasingly rife with poor food choices, the easiest response to unhealthy options is to grow your own food. I don’t care it’s a single tomato plant or a garden large enough to feed 10 families, cultivate an appreciation for fresh, whole food. Be open to learning. In life, you will never know it all, never assume that you do. A humble open, attitude towards learning will lead to new skills and experiences. Dress appropriately for the occasion. A hat, long-sleeved shirt, jeans, and boots, evolved out of necessity. Protect yourself from the sun, wind and weather with the proper clothing. I nag and question your clothing choices, because you are precious to me. Don’t judge, but if you do, judge people by their abilities, attitudes, actions not appearances. Words have power to create divisiveness, do not use them to speak against yourself or gossip about others. Always do your best. There are days when your best is better than others, recognize that. Avoid self-judgement, abuse, and regret and enjoy the process. Develop a sense of place. Wherever you may live, learn the names of plants, rocks, and animals, visit old homesteads (or neighborhoods) and educate yourself about Indigenous cultures. In doing so, you gain roots, a sense of belonging that will lend you stability in all that you do. Break a sweat everyday. Pound a steel post or take a jog, whatever you do, break a sweat daily. Your mind and body will thank you for it.

Crescent Postmaster “Fired” (Circa 1965) Grace McMullen and husband Harley sold their farm and moved to Crescent. Grace was named “acting” postmaster in September of 1949; succeeding Bess Jewell, who retired. A year after, Grace had a “permanent” position. Harley died in 1953 but Grace continued to be the Crescent Postmaster until her retirement in 1965, at which time, she was “fired” by the U.S. Postal Service only because she had reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. Grace was probably one of the most respected, well-liked, civic-minded people that Crescent has ever known. Besides being Postmaster for 16 years, she served on the Crescent School Board for 11 years, was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America (Camp 5152) for 64 years, belonged to the Council Bluffs Altrusa Club for 23 years and a member of the Hazel Dell United Methodist Church for 56 years. During her tenure as Postmaster, she had the able assistance of 3 clerks. Lorene (Mrs. Ross) Hough, Berniece Heath, and Erma (Mrs. Dan) Hanson. The rural mail carrier was Charles Kinney, Sr. who retired in 1975 after 32 years of service. In comparison; Crescent was then a fourth class Post Office with 89 (in town) box holders. Today it continues its fourth class status with 251 boxes, in town. Chuck Kinney had a daily route of 54 miles and 287 postal patrons and today there are 62 miles and 389 box holders. Post Office locations have changed several times too; from a gas station located where the Pink Poodle Steakhouse is now, to the rear of the house, owned by the McMullen’s on the corner of E. Florence and Highway 183. The Post Office remained there until the present one was built in 1973. Grace passed away in 1986 at the age of 90. She left 3 children, 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and many friends. I feel honored to have been one of her friends. She was a treasure.
—Evonne Allen This column was written in the early 90’s. As for 2013, the Crescent Post Office has 195 box holders, two separate routes covering a combined total of 168 miles with 949 patrons.
