While attending the last Pancake Breakfast I saw the dedication of the Crescent Auxiliary, the Crescent fire department, and a great sense of community in our firebarn. It is always fun to see our neighbors and friends. The proceeds help purchase all types of equipment for the fire and rescue services. I would like to say “thank you for all you do” to everyone involved. If you have never been, try it, it is once a month. This month we are putting together the Pokamoke swimming pool program. We plan to have a Grand Opening in May and doors open to the public by the end of May. Last week vandals broke into the pool shower house and cut out the copper plumbing and wiring causing a lot of damage. I hear they have been caught and punished. Thank you to Mark Schildberg for generously repairing the damage. This is the second friendly reminder to clean up or store any JUNK & cars on your property. It may be valuable to you but your neighbors are sick of looking at it. In May we will begin enforcing the ordinance. Please make arrangements accordingly.

Join fellow historians and tourists for the Official Lincoln Highway Centennial Tours, headed for Kearney, Nebraska from each coast, for the centennial of America’s first paved transcontinental road: the Lincoln Highway. Antique cars, Classics, muscle cars, ’50s cars, trucks, motorcycles, street rods, and modern cars are welcome to participate. You will travel the original alignments of the Lincoln Highway covering many miles of two-lane history, four-lane progress, and even gravel scenic beauty. Travel from America’s urban centers, through pastoral farm lands, over breathtaking mountains and rolling prairies. Travelers from the East will start on June 21st at Times Square, the heart of America’s most vibrant city. You will travel through ivy-covered college towns such as Princeton, New Jersey, and the Amish country of Pennsylvania. From Pittsburgh’s steel and beer brewing industrial history, you will travel through Ohio’s diverse agricultural and commercial mix. Indiana takes you through more Amish farm land, South Bend’s Notre Dame and automotive history and on to Illinois. From Illinois you will travel to Iowa’s farmland across the Mississippi River into the prairies of Nebraska and on to the Centennial celebration in Kearney at the Great Platte River Arch Museum. Western travelers enjoy beginning their journey on June 22nd in the urban centers of San Francisco and Oakland, California. After traveling through the state’s agricultural Central Valley you are exposed to the magnificent Sierra Nevada Mountains and Donner Pass before dropping into the deserts of Nevada and the Great Salt Lake of Utah. Climbing the mountains out of Salt Lake City, you will enter the wide open spaces of Wyoming and on to historic Cheyenne for an overnight stop. This is followed by your easterly trek into Nebraska and eventually joining the rest of the travelers from the east for the grand parade of cars into Kearney on opening day, June 30th. Entry fees have been kept low to permit participation for as much of the tour as you wish. Miles travelled are kept to an average of 240 per day to permit time to stop for tourist attractions and the pace of the older cars. Discounted hotel rates and automated booking services will be provided by Holiday Inn and its parent company InterContinental Hotels, the official Lincoln Highway hotel sponsor. Discounted vehicle shipping will be arranged for those who wish to ship cars home after the tour in Nebraska or from the opposite coast. Contact Bob Lichty for shipping information at (330) 704-5271. For tour information and booking, contact Rosemary Rubin at (330) 418-3980. Space is limited • Reservation deadline: May 1, 2013. Refund deadline: must be received by May 1, 2013. Google it...The LHA Mapping Committee has worked for a decade to map all generations of the Lincoln Highway, from the obscure Proclamation Route to the equally-rare city feeders. Paul Gilger, mapping software expert and committee chair, has done a brilliant job, spending hundreds of hours to apply route information to Google Maps. The maps are now available to the public for free. Go to www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/map to see this stunning resource detailing exactly where the Lincoln Highway went from coast-to-coast. The map for the 100th Anniversary Tour is at www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/tour/2013/map.

What’s Up at CECC?Submitted by Linda & Mindy Brewer

In February, there’s not much to celebrate. There’s Valentine’s Day. We did exchange valentines, and we thank the families that sent treats. And there’s Presidents’ Day. In our preschool class, we read about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and talked about what made them special presidents. But mostly, the kids were surprised and sad that they were both dead. The preschool mind operates in the present. Last month, we were learning about numbers and what we use them for. Our last lesson was on money. First we looked at real money. When you think about it, types of money don’t make much sense. If a dime is worth more than a nickel, why is it smaller? And why are pennies brown and other coins silver? Questions we couldn’t answer. We used play money to learn about earning and spending. Because we wanted the kids to know where money comes from, they all had to choose jobs to do around the center. They could dust, vacuum, sort toys and the like. The harder jobs paid more. (Not always the case in real life.). Then they could spend their money at the store. Luke and Brianna happened to be there that day, so they were our store keepers. It was interesting to see the shopping styles of the kids. Some of them picked out one thing and said they were keeping the rest of their money. Some spent it all, including on a $7.00 pine cone. (Brianna said it was a special pine cone.) They got to keep what they bought. So they all went home with a bag of .... stuff. And, hopefully, some understanding of how money works. As for the school-agers, there haven’t been any days off recently. There is one coming up, as this is written, and we hope to visit the library in Council Bluffs. But there is, also, a major storm predicted, so we’ll wait and see. CECC is helping KETV collect vitamins and over-the-counter pain relievers for Dr. Joseph Dumba to take with him when he goes to South Sudan to provide medical care. If you watch KETV news, you have seen stories about him and his mission, If you don’t, you can get more information on their web site. We decided to let you, in the community, know that you may bring unopened bottles of vitamins and/or over-the-counter pain relievers to our center, and we will see that they get to KETV to be taken along on the trip and handed out to his patients. The people of South Sudan have suffered terribly in the war between the north and south parts of the Sudan, and it seems like one small thing we can do for them. You may contribute until the last part of March, when they will leave on their trip. And thank you to those of you who can help. We remind you that we have openings at the center for school-age and preschool kids. We will be open during spring break, the first week in April, if that would be a good time to bring your child for a visit. And of course, you may call or visit any time for more information.

Right: William McMullen arrived in Pott. Co. in 1852. He rented a

farm for 2 years, bought 55 acres, improved it then sold it. After 6

years he bought the Crescent farm (right), 190 acres. He owned a

total of 380 acres.

In past issues we’ve reprinted info from “The History of Pottawattamie County”, a two volume collection detailing the towns, townships and earliest settlers of Pott. County. At that time we featured a story about the McMullen’s, some of Crescents earliest settlers. These are photos taken from Ancestry.com of the McMullen family and their farm located east of Crescent on what is now Badger Ave. The farmhouse in the bottom right photos still stands. Solomon McMullen was born in Ohio on June 6, 1832,

the son of William and Catharine McMullen; William and Catharine

had eleven children, six boys and five girls. They migrated from Missouri to Pottawattamie County in 1852. William died in 1878 and Solomon continued farming.

He had approximately four hundred acres, a good portion of which is timber.

He grew the typical farm crops and raised considerable stock. Solomon was married in Iowa

on Decmeber 2, 1852 to Ellen Dunkle. They were blessed with six children: Mary, Amanda, John, Daniel, Anna and Reuben.
