A Blue Ribbon ReflectionSubmitted by Principal Melissa Chalupnik, Crescent Elementary

The summer of 2011 started out with a rising river. The Missouri River was poised to swallow up the countryside and quickly cut-off Crescent from convenient interstate access. I was devastated by the loss of homes and farmland. The Crescent community rallied and supported one another through it all. It was overnight that the usual twenty-five minute commute from my home to Crescent Elementary became a fifty minute commute. I look back and think how insignificant my drive was compared to the losses of the community. Then to add insult to injury, the hailstorm that arrived on just the second day of the 2011-2012 school year destroyed roofs, cars, and homes along with my beloved car. That same car that I had spent so much travel time in was now beyond repair. I felt as if I was losing a trusted friend. So, I began commuting in an SUV which required gas fill-ups every third day. The road crews were working day and night, but I knew the time had come to find a more fuel-efficient vehicle. When I went to the dealership, I was set on wanting the exact same car I had. Lansky’s Night to Support Crescent Elementary: Upcoming Dates: September 22, October 27, and November 24. Lansky’s Restaurant on North Broadway will generously donate 15% of total receipts on our designated day back to our school. Our date is the 4th Saturday of every month from 11 am - 9 pm. Just eat at Lansky’s and drop your receipt in the box on the counter. We appreciate the support from our community with this fundraising effort, as anyone eating at the restaurant that day can drop a receipt in the box.

Hitchcock Nature Center Partnership We have started a science enrichment program at Crescent Elementary. Hitchcock Nature Center (HNC) is a big part of this program. Monthly, HNC visits our classrooms to present hands-on programs ranging from Monarch Butterfly Migration to Prairie Pride. We have also built in several field trips to the Nature Area where we will be involved with earth caching, hawk watches, and studying the science of soil. Hitchcock is a fabulous resource to have located in our backyard! We are also providing hands-on science “lab” experiments each month. This is a chance for students to use special equipment, perform experiments, and get out on our school’s nature trail. All parent volunteers are welcome to help with this program.

Volunteers Needed: If you would like to be a reading or science volunteer at our school, please contact [email protected] or call the office at 545-3566. Background checks and interviews are required for volunteerism. Help make a difference in a student’s life by volunteering an hour a week.

Help Us Collect!• We continue to collect Box Tops and Labels for Education (Campbell’s soup labels and many more products) year round. • We continue to collect Hy-Vee and Super Saver grocery receipts. Date and amount must be on receipt. • These items can be dropped off at Crescent School or dropped in the bin at American National Bank in Crescent.

Submitted by Julie NewbyContinued from Cover...is that we are a data-rich district and finding data was the easy part. The hardest part was staying under the word limits on the application. I enjoy writing, and when someone tells me to write about my school, I want to be thorough. I quickly learned that less is more, and I could find creative ways to get my points across. After submitting the application in February, we would have to wait seven long months to see if we would receive this honor. Summer came and went. The 2012-2013 school year began and we were still waiting. Then on Friday, September 7th, the announcement was made. Crescent Elementary was among 269 schools nationwide chosen to receive the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Award in Education. I received an email late Thursday night alerting me to watch a live broadcast via the internet on Friday when the announcements were made. I didn’t check my email that night or first thing in the morning, because I was focused on designing lessons to model in a classroom, and I couldn’t wait to get started. I would check my email when the students were at lunch or recess. I just didn’t want to miss these moments with students and teachers. Then as the students were at lunch, I opened my inbox and saw the subject line...Blue Ribbon Winner Announcement. I opened the email, clicked on several links, and there in black and white was Crescent Elementary. I am usually not a great person at keeping secrets, but I knew this one was big! I had to think about how I would tell the staff, students, parents, and community. Because my day was already filled with meetings and classroom visits, I couldn’t stop everything. The day had to continue and students needed to stay focused on school business. I had managed to keep the secret all day long. Then at the end of the day after all the students were safely on their way home, Dr. Bruckner and Dr. Mausbach made a special visit to Crescent to congratulate everyone on a job well done. I think I may have had temporary hearing loss after the staff screams, but I’m sure I heard a staff that is proud of their accomplishment and just as proud to be a part of a great school community. Shortly after, I recorded a message to begin playing in homes across the community...Crescent Elementary did it! Time has passed, newspaper articles have been written, congratulatory notes and messages have been received, and we are still working hard to meet the needs of all of our students. As we reflected on this honor as a staff, we all view this as a victory for education, an honor for Crescent, and a reflection on the Council Bluffs Community School District. We are proud to work for a district that provides us with the opportunities for professional development and the tools to help us be successful with students. We are equally thankful for the Crescent community that helps to prepare our students for a life beyond the classroom walls. The community helps us to achieve our mission of “Every Child Every Day” with support to keep our students safe, healthy, challenged, supported, and engaged. I am thankful everyday for all the support we receive. This award isn’t given to just the school, it is a reflection of the district and community. It is meant to be shared with students who are committed to their own learning, parents who make sure children are at school each day, and educators who hold high expectations for every student. In November, a classroom teacher and I are traveling to Washington D.C. to receive a plaque signifying the achievement and a flag that will proudly fly above our school. We are both excited and proud to represent our school and district. In the meantime, there are still things to be done. Students need support and challenges, teachers need modeling and feedback, and I need to continue to offer assistance in all of these areas. As I leave each night and walk out to my car, I reflect on our successes and ponder ways to improve. I know that each year brings new challenges. Then I remind myself that challenges strengthen character, but there are always those lingering “what ifs”. What if we haven’t done all we can for this student, What if we try this instead of that, What if I hadn’t completed the Blue Ribbon application process properly, what if the committee decided it wasn’t our time. But it was our time. It was our time to be named a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School. And it is my time to thank everyone who volunteers their time and talents, supports our students, offers assistance, and keeps our school safe. We couldn’t do it without you, and we are thankful. As far as that “blue ribbon metallic” car that sits in the parking lot at Crescent Elementary, I really love the color!

It’s hard to say what was shining brighter; the beautiful, brisk first day of Fall or the streets and park filled with friends, neighbors, bouncing kids and volleyball galore. Regardless, it was a day packed with fun and we have the Optimists and volunteers to thank for that. So a big round of applause to the Optimists and all who helped and participated. Several awards were handed out as well. Below are photos of some of the recipients in the order listed. What’s Up at CECC?Submitted by Linda & Mindy Brewer

We usually open this column with comments about the weather or general activities. But mid-September is just “ordinary” for our kids. We are finishing up our garden harvest, such as it was. Of all the things the preschoolers planted last spring, only the cherry tomatoes flourished, and we are still picking them. But the rest succumbed to heat and bugs. We’re told that happened to lots of gardens this year. We do thank Kathy West, our neighbor Tim, and Ethan Brewer for giving us some of their produce to enjoy. We did get huge volunteer sunflowers that we used in a couple of lessons. We cut them down and took out the seeds, which the kids took home to feed to the birds or save for next spring. We tried sunflower seeds for snack, read some books and learned some fingerplays about them. Our preschool class is under way. We welcome Kaybree, Jack, Josie, Claire and Dylan to our class, and plan to have a good year. We’re now learning about the seasons, especially Fall. Crescent is a good place to study fall because we have so many kinds of trees around. Most of the corn around us has been combined allowing us to walk through the fields looking for ears that have been missed. Unfortunately, the Morans do such a good job there isn’t much to be found.. We’ve seen flocks of robins and blackbirds gathering, we assume preparing to fly south. So there’s lots to observe. If you have a child you think would benefit from preschool two or three times a week, we invite you to visit and see what we do. We can add kids any time of the year. There have no days off from school yet, so our school-agers haven’t had a chance to do anything special at the center. But we do try to see that they have as much outside time as possible. It’s recommended that that age group have, at least, an hour of strenuous physical activity a day. So everyone goes out to ride bikes, run, yell, climb, whatever it takes to burn some calories. As usual, we thank Marvis Collins for keeping our fleet of bikes in good repair. We are looking to replace our toy shed, which has served us well for 19 years, but is now falling apart. If you have a shed approximately, 10ft. x 10 ft, that you would be willing to donate or sell at a good price, please contact us. Our email is [email protected]. Or you could speak to Mike Harmon or Troy Thomason. Finally, we want to congradulate Crescent Elementary School for the Blue Ribbon Award. It is recognition of the quality of the education and the support of the parents and community. And we like to think we contributed a bit by sending them kids well-prepared for school.

Pink Poodle History

• The Pink Poodle is the longest standing restaurant in Crescent, known best for its prime rib. • Bill’s Tavern was erected in that location in the 1940’s. Through the 50’s the property also held a house and a motel. • A couple from Ft. Calhoun bought the tavern and converted it into a restaurant called Pede’s. • Few years later: Jake Brummer bought it and renamed it the Black Glove. • In 1964 a contest was held in town to change the name. A lady who raised poodles came up with the “Pink Poodle”. • In 1966, Art Paulison and a partner bought the restaurant. In ‘71 Art’s future wife, Mary Jo, bought the partner out with money she inherited. The following month the restaurant burned down. • In 1973 Art and Mary Jo married and began thinking about rebuilding. • In 1975, a tornado in Omaha leveled another restaurant, the Prom Townhouse. All that was left of it were the large wooden arches. Art Paulison bought the arches, hauled them to Crescent and with the help of family and friends, rebuilt the Poodle around them. • Doreen McNeil started waitressing there in 1983. Tonette Muell Carlson started in 1978 and Donna Malone has waitressed since 1955. • Besides the food and service, the Pink Poodle was also known for the doll collection. Mary Jo was an avid doll collector and displayed most of them in sealed and alarmed cases. Her oldest doll was Civil War era. But most were early 1900’s German and French bisque dolls. • On St. Patrick’s Day in 2003, tragedy struck the Pink Poodle with the sudden the death of Mary Jo. Doreen and the staff were able to keep the restaurant going and eventually Doreen bought the restaurant.
