Winter quarter at Northwestern can be extremely un-pleasant. Students put up with below freezing tempera-tures, a surfeit of snowfall and intolerable winds, yet the likelihood of receiving relief in the form of a cancelled class on account of these conditions is unlikely. During winter quarter, we trade in our cute autumn attire for the more practical sweats,coats and boots and days and nights formerly spent out and about slowly give way to time engaging in any activity that will allow us to stay indoors, and oftentimes, social isolation.

These dreary conditions can make it easy for us to lose sight of beauty. For precisely this reason, this quarter’s issue of Voice & Vision celebrates beauty--the beauty of

contain a number of written and visual works that run the gamut in their representations of what constitutes beauty .

From Kellyn Lewis’ “Magnum Opus” which heralds the beauty of Black people, to Jennifer Haderspeck’s poem “Synthetic Beauty” which examines the plight for beauty beyond what is natural, to Jessica Weiner’s photographic depictions of beauty outside of mainstream conceptions, this release of V&V attempts to widen the reader’s per-spective, and bring a little beauty to your Winter Quarter.
