#2—A Jesuit, a Dominican, and a Franciscan were walking along an old road, deba ng the greatness of their orders. Suddenly, an appari-
on of the Holy Family appeared in front of them, with Jesus in a manger and Mary and Joseph praying over him. The Franciscan fell on his face, overcome with awe at the sight of God born in such pov-erty. The Dominican fell to his knees, adoring the beau ful reflec on of the Trinity and the Holy Family. The Jesuit walked up to Joseph, put his arm around his shoulder, and said, “So, have you thought about where to send him to school?”
#3—A priest was driving and gets stopped for speeding. The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest’s breath and then sees an empty wine bo le on the floor of the car. He says, “Father, have you been drinking?” “Just water,” says the priest, fingers crossed. The troop-er says, “Then why do I smell wine?” The priest looks at the bo le and says, “Praise be to God! He’s done it again!”
#4 - I was going to tell you about all the drama at the con-vent, but then remembered it’s nun of your business.
A MINDSET OF SERVICE There s a lot of traveling, delivering, and visi ng going on in our readings today. In Genesis Abraham cares for the needs of three mysterious travelers. The psalm responds, cele-bra ng the kind of righteousness that Abraham prac ces. Then, in his le er to the Colossians, Saint Paul describes his own ministry as almost like a delivery service: he, God ’s steward, brings the word of God to their community. Finally, Luke ’s Gospel shares the well-known story of Mary and Mar-tha, and the different ways they welcome Jesus into their home. Amid all this coming and going, we are invited to pay a en on to the ways we tend to the needs of others. Each of us can ask, How am I present to God and others in my life? And now for some funnies:
The Fas ng & Prayer Conference includes meals. The sermon this morning: 'Jesus Walks on the Water.' The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.' Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house…..Bring your husbands. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our communi-ty. Don't let worry kill you off. Let the Church help. Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congrega on. For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir prac ce. Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addi-
on of several new members and to the deteriora on of some older ones. Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bo les and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING EVEYONE IN SEPTEMBER!
NO ONE S ENEMY May I be no one s enemy, and may I be the friend
of that which is eternal and abides.
There ’s a different pace to a summer Sunday, especially on those days when we dream of air condi oning and wave any available paper to s r the air. Yet we persist in gathering, even with so many breaks from the usual rou nes. We dis-tance ourselves not only from rou nes, but from schedules and familiar well-worn paths. These are playful days and contempla ve days. We see long-lost friends and visit al-most-forgo en places. We have more leisure than any peo-ple before in the history of the world, and we need it be-cause our lives are so care-worn and ring. More of us walk barefoot and look up at the stars or dip our toes in the lake or sea, sing around campfires, read novels on the beach, and eat comfort food with our fingers. We see how beau ful life can be, and are more aware than usual of how God is always breaking in with signs of love. In Genesis today, Abraham and Sarah prac ce hospitality to their visitors, who turn out to be God dropping in. During the summer months, God prac ces hospitality in return, invi ng us into a season of celebra on. Keeping Sunday holy is a good habit to cul vate in these days when our spirits are especially recep ve to God ’s deep desire for us to know di-vine love.
