Which Bonds?

Resin Bond Diamond&CBN grinding tools

Resin bonds are based on phenolic or polyimide resins, mixed with abrasive grains and other fillers, glued to the

steel or aluminum body. Due to their fast and cool grinding behavior, resin bonds are used in a wide range of

application.

Metal(Sintered) Bond Diamond&CBN grinding tools

Metal bonds are based on bronze, which are relatively much more wear resistant. Metal bonds act harder than

resin bonds and vitrified bonds, which grip the abrasive grains more strongly, leading to a long lifetime. Metal

bonded grinding wheels normally work slower than resin bonded, harder but generate more heat during grinding

compare with resin bonded. Metal bonds are specialist on grinding sharp edge profiles and on machining

abrasive materials. Metal bonds are mostly used in wet grinding, which generate heat but also readily dissipate

heat during the processing.

Electroplated Bond Diamond&CBN grinding tools

Electroplated bonds are based on nickel coating on a supporting metal or aluminum body. The cutting and

grinding of electroplated bonds is fast but not durable. The cost is lower and the shape is not limited,

electroplated wheels are widely used in silicon, semiconductor materials, glass, ceramics and so on.

Vitrified Bond Diamond&CBN grinding tools

Vitrified bonds are based on fusible glasses and fillers and the abrasive grains. Vitrified bonds are available in

different hardness levels by controlling its density.

Cubic Boron Nitride(CBN) or Diamond?

CBN has the zinc-blende crystal structure equivalent to diamond, the hardness is a little below diamond.CBN

has technological and economic advantages compare to diamond. The hardness of CBN work pieces is as low

as 50 HRC but not brittle.

Diamond is the hardest material know now, with a Moh's harness of 10.Compare with CBN,diamond is used

for grinding hard but brittle and short-chipping materials, such as tungsten

carbide,glass,ceramics,quarz,graphite and so on.

CBN is superior to all other materials for grinding hardened steel, it hardly generates a high temperature,

because CBN has an extremely good conductivity for temperature. This is also helped by the shape of the

metal body of the wheel.

For woodturning wheel, there are two types. One is a mix of abrasive and a bonding agent, that is applied to

an aluminum hub in a layer. The other type is a machined steel hub with the abrasive material plated to the

surface of the wheel.

Vitrified bond grinding wheels for PCD and PCBN tools

PCD Material Features:

PCD (Polycrystalline diamond) material has a very high and excellent wear resistance, making it an ideal tool material, but PCD tool sharpening processing is very difficult, it mainly does not ensure PCD tool sharpening quality, tool sharpening efficiency is lower, sharpening mechanism is complex.

For the grinding PCD tool, since the resin binding agent is more soft, easy to deformation when grinding,

can not effectively grinding PCD tool. Metal binding agent makes grinding wheel poor self-sharpening owing

to strong combination of abrasive grains. It has low grinding efficiency, and the metal bond diamond grinding

wheel will cause the PCD tool edge serious damage. According to grinding efficiency, durable and workpiece

surface processing quality, vitrified bond diamond grinding wheel is ideal choice for PCD tool.
