Lost & FoundHave you seen this dog?

Marley was last seen on the 5th October at around 5pm on West Auckland Road. She is a very friendly Jackadoo-dle, around the size of a Jack Russell with a curly black coat. She was wearing a red collar and is only 18 months-old.This dog is owned by two disabled people and is terribly missed. A reward will be given for any information leading to her return. Eight people have been arrested and two vehicles seized in South Durham as part of a crackdown on metal theft.Police officers and neigh-bourhood wardens from Durham County Council have stopped more than 100 vehicles suspected of carrying scrap metal during the past three months as part of an ongoing operation by the Safe Durham Partnership. The clampdown in the area has also seen eight drivers issued with fixed penalty notices for failing to produce the correct paperwork for the loads they were carrying.A further 29 people were

given warnings or received fines for other vehicle-related offences following the spot checks.Inspector Ed Turner of Durham Constabulary Roads Policing unit said, “These stop and search exercises have enabled us to identify a number of individuals we suspect of being involved in the theft and sale of scrap metal.“They have also helped us crack down on rogue traders carrying commercial waste without being licensed to do so.”Officers and wardens are also using DNA technology to identify the origin of suspected stolen metal. With the help of special

torches it is possible to identify markings on the metal.During the stop and search operations, drivers are asked to produce their waste carrier’s licence and documents proving the legitimacy of the load they are carrying.Anyone who does not have the correct paperwork can receive a £300 fixed penalty notice. Failure to pay the fine could result in court action and a maximum fine of £5,000.Anyone with information about local metal thefts should contact local police on the non-emergency number 01325 60 60 365

Fancy-dress drop-off raises funds for Transaid

Ian Baranowski (centre) with his troupe of fancy-dress fundraisers.A Shildon man who his hoping to cycle across Tanzania to raise money for Transaid, a charity which aims to reduce poverty across Africa, boosted his funds last weekend when he organised a sponsored

drop-off.Participants had to don their funniest attire before being left miles away from home with no phones and no money. Their aim was to somehow find their way back to Shildon.

So far, Ian has raised a fantastic £1930. He said, “I would like to say a big thank you to Billy and Heather of the Three Tuns, as well as Wendy Lambert and the Jubilee Jazz Band for their help.”

Man calls 999 in search of friendshipBishop Auckland Magis-trates Court heard last Tuesday how a local man had repeatedly called 999 because firefighters had previously been kind to him.James Wales, 22 of Eldon Lane admitted to making two nuisance calls last month. The calls were in breach of his conditional discharge given after he had previously called police six times in just 20 minutes in June.Alison Nunn, prosecuting, told the court that Wales has learning difficulties and mental health issues, and has a history of calling 999 when he is depressed.Ms Nunn continued saying how Wales had called

police on September 22nd at 3.39pm but hung up. He phoned again ten minutes later telling the operator he’d drunk five pints and had possibly taken ecstasy.Wales then asked the officers who visited him to take him to the bookmakers before asking for an ambulance to take him to prison. Ms Nunn continued, telling the court Wales wanted to go to prison and would not stop calling until they had taken him. John Turner, mitigating, said the phoning started after Wales made a legitimate call to the fire service. He told the court how, “the fire crew had huge sympathy for him, made him a cup of tea,

gave him fish and chips and sat and talked with him.”“This led him to believe that calling 999 was the route to make contact with people.”The solicitor admitted that Wales persistent calling to the 999 service was moving him closer to imprison-ment, saying “some people sink in prison and some people swim. James would sink like a lead balloon, he would be exploited.”“He knows he is now on an escalator heading to prison and realises calling 999 is the wrong way to make contact with society.”Wales is due for sentencing at Bishop Auckland Mag-istrates Court on Tuesday 26th October.

Phoenix Thai boxer becomes the North East Area ChampionTerrie Walmsley, who trains with Gary Mcallister at the Phoenix gym in Shildon, became the new North East Area Champion recently in front of a sell out crowd of 650 at the resent Lee Smith Memorial Show, which was held in Aycliffe recently.Terrie fought a good full rules fight against a very strong fighter from Darlington. It was a close fight but she scored so well in what was a great technical display of the sport. This was a very proud moment for Trainer Gary Mcallister, as he always knew Terrie was good enough to win a title.Phoenix Thai Boxing club of Shildon had 9 fighters on the 18 fight card. The club’s fighters did the club and town proud winning 6 out of 9, but the highlight of the show was the Phoenix fighters who fought and won titles

Terrie Walmsley as she is presented with her title belt.along with the Lee Smith memorial trophy.

Shildon lose to Workington in FA CupShildon AFC travelled to Borough Park, Workington on Saturday 9th October for the 3rd Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup and came away losers, as did all the other three Northern League teams left in the competition.Workington's winning score-line of 2 - 1 was the same as the previous round tie against West Auckland. After a quiet start Shildon took the lead with their first attack when on 8 minutes Sam Garvie beat a defender and blasted into the top corner of the net, giving keeper Aaran Taylor no chance.Less than a minute later it was 1 - 1. From the re-start Workington went straight down field and No. 10 Gareth Arnison equalised.Workington stepped up the pace and on 14 minutes they were in the lead, when a shot from outside the box from No. 11 Anthony Wright was deflected off Steve Walklate, past Keith Finch, into Shildon's goal. After 25 minutes Workington were down to ten men as Shaun Vipond was red-carded for an off-the-ball incident involving Gary Brown.Despite having an extra man Shildon were unable to capitalise. They were playing the long-ball upfield, which was not effective.Just on half-time they should have been level when Sonny Andrews was through with a one-on-one with the keeper, but his shot was blocked. The ball bounced back to Andrews, but his second attempt hit

the side netting.Shildon had been 2nd best in the first half and could only get better.Just 2 minutes from kick off in the second half and once again the score should have been level when Sam Garvie got through, only for his shot to be well-blocked by keeper Taylor. On another day, Sam would have scored. On 55 minutes Workington's man-of-the-match Anthony Wright was yellow-carded for diving on the edge of the box. Shortly afterwards, at the other end, Sam Garvie was brought down inside the area which could easily have been a penalty, but the referee thought otherwise. Two controver-sial decisions.Half chances fell to Work-ington's Matty Tymon who blasted over and Conor Tinnion's shot was well-saved by Keith Finch.Near the end, Daniel 'Bobby' Moore received his marching orders for his 2nd yellow card.Overall, the score line was just about right as Workington never let Shildon settle on the ball and despite Workington having a man short for a long period of play, Shildon's extra man was not noticeable. Shildon AFC are at home in the league on Saturday 16th October against West Allotment Celtic. On Wednesday 20th October they entertain local rivals Bishop Auckland in the 1st round of the Durham Challenge Cup.
