God’s Word Today Today’s readings ask us to make a home for God within our hearts. Listen carefully to the Gospel. Initially, Mary’s reaction to Gabriel’s as-tounding revelation is one of fear- “She was greatly troubled at what was said.” As believers, we are called to the same kind of faith exhibited by Mary and, like her, our initial response might be one of fear. A cen-tral reason that Mary is held in such high esteem in our tradition is her response to Gabriel’s message—”May It be done to me according to your word.” She is the model for all believers. She made a home within her heart for the Son God. We are asked to do the same. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, may we allow God’s word to open our hearts, making a receptive home there for Christ the Lord. First Reading I will fix a place for my people. 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8-12,14,16 Psalm For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. Psalm 89 Second Reading: To the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be glory forever and ever. Romans 16:25-27 Gospel Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word. Luke 1:26-38
Advent The fourth candle, lit on the fourth Sunday of advent, is the Angel’s candle. As we light this flame, we are reminded of the heavenly hosts that proclaimed Christ’s arrival with “Behold, I bring unto you good tiding of great joy!” The Angel candle is also purple, reminding us that it was Kings birth the angels were announcing.
