The Garden of Lights , Kuala Lumpur
Exoticism, mystery, a world full of history and stories of sultans and their mistresses, but also impressive
architecture, technology, and bustling commerce, thats what you can expect to find in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysias capital may not be the biggest city on the face of the Earth, but it manages to impress through its
unique mixture of old and new. Perhaps the most famous symbol of Malaysian history is the palace of sultan
Abdul Samad, with its one-of-a-kind design and majestic facades, while the new is represented by the Petronas
Towers and modernhotels in Kuala Lumpur.
With a population of 7.2 million, The Garden City of Lights, as Kuala Lumpur is often referred to, as a modern,
crowded and noisy city that manages to retain its identity, history and traditions intact. At first glance you might
be tempted to categorize it as just another city dominated by impressive-looking skyscrapers, but in reality,
Kuala Lumpur has many historical structures, and a rich cultural heritage, just waiting to be discovered. Kuala
Lumpur is home to a mixture of Arab, Chinese and Indian cultures that never tried to annihilate each other, but
learned to coexist in peace and harmony. The main religion is Islam, hence the large number of mosques and
minarets, of which the Friday Mosque and the Masjid Negara Mosque are the most impressive. There are also
plenty of Chinese and Indian religious buildings, like Sze Yeah Temple, and the Sri Maha Marianmeu Temple.
The Petronas Towers, two architectural jewels piercing the sky, are the most famous structures in Kuala Lumpur.
The tallest twin towers in the world, they also held the title of the tallest building on Earth, until 2003, when the
Taipei 101 tower was completed. The most impressive characteristic of the Petronas Towers is the bridge that
connects them, at 170 meters into the air. Open to the public, Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm, it
offers a unique view over Kuala Lumpur. Last but not least, Kuala Lumpur is the perfect place to experience the
fabulous oriental cuisine. Malaysian gastronomy is unique in its way of blending continental dishes from China
and India, with foods from the islands of the Sea of China. This creates a colorful, aromatic and sometimes
electrifying experience thats definitely worth the trip to Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur has plenty of colonial buildings in its center, a vibrant Chinatown with street
vendors and night markets, and a bustling Little India. Sample the city's highlights on a morning
tour of Chinatown, mosques and grand public buildings - you can also do this as a private tour
with your own English-speaking guide. Or take the full-day private tour to really get to know
this vibrant Asian city. Discover the tropical green side of KL on a morning tour of the city's
nature parks to see butterflies, birds, hibiscus and orchids.
Kuala Lumpur's ethnic mix means you can eat Malay food for breakfast, Chinese for lunch and
Indian for dinner. The numerous night markets scattered around the city are crowded and
atmospheric, buzzing with the sounds of haggling and Asian pop. When it's time to move on to
indoor entertainment, the Golden Triangle and Bangsar areas are the places to head for bars
and dancing. And in the glitter of neon lights, see Kuala Lumpur by night with dinner and
Chinatown's night markets included, or from the revolving restaurant atop KL Tower .

Shopping in Kuala Lumpur
Its a clich, but there you have it: KL is a shoppers paradise. Anything and everything is on sale in the
citys many malls, markets and street-side stalls. From the malls of Bukit Bintang to the splendor of Suria
KLCC, you can shop in air-conditioned comfort for hours! If youre looking for local souvenirs and crafts
head to theCentral Market. There are plenty of bargains to be had in bustling Chinatown, which reminds
me: in KL the key to a successful shopping experience is to bargain. Prices are never fixed here (unless
youre in an internationally-known chain store), so dont hesitate to ask for the best price whether youre
in an air-conditioned mall, like Low Yat, or out on the street in Chinatown. No matter where you are, keep
it light and fun, with a smile on your face angry bargaining is seen as very rude in this part of the world.
And dont forget, its all part of the adventure! An excellent place to start is Bukit Bintang (Star Hill in
Bahasa Malayu), the heart of downtown KL. If youre looking for the luxury shops, you can find everything
from high-end designers like Gucci and Prada at the Star Hill Mall (next door to the Westin Hotel). The
lower level also houses a great variety of gourmet restaurants. Next door to the Star Hill Mall is Lot 10,
one of the most popular stops for local fashionistas great shoes and great bargains can be found in this
slightly smaller, mid-priced shopping mall. Further down the street is Low Yat Plaza electronics is the
name of the game here, everything from cell phones to digital cameras to computers to MP3 players (but
no clothes, shoes, glasses or books). Dont forget to bargain hard, though, prices start in the
stratosphere, but you can usually get some great deals if youre willing to try a little banter with theshopkeepers.Suria KLCCis Malaysias premiere shopping outlet directly underneath the Petronas
Towers. The ground level houses designer boutiques, while the upper levels showcase more mid-level
shops. Suria has some great restaurants along with an international food court.
Another great shopping stop is the hustle and bustle of Chinatown, specifically Jalan Petaling. Knock-offs
of just about everything can be found, along with more traditional Chinese items. Prices are aimed at well-
heeled tourists, so dont forget to negotiate for everything start at around 1/3rd of the quoted price and
work up from there. If youre still on your feet by the time the sun goes down, KL has a great selectionof Pasar Malam(night markets) all around the city. The Sunday night market in Bangsar is one of the
largest, and a frequent favorite of expats living in KL. Fresh fruits and vegetables, along with all sorts of
clothes, accessories and souvenirs can be found at any one of these fabulous markets.
