Neighbors of Harvey Park I send you wishes for a wonderful holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving and a
very Merry Christmas to all!!! My concern for the Harvey Park neighborhood is the need to support and
strengthen the HPIA. Informing, involving, exchanging information and ideas is the goal at our meetings. The Board and Committees exist to support our community. The City and State Representatives at the meetings exist to hear our concerns and forward them up for consideration. Democracies require us to participate.
I'm asking that a neighborhood of over 4,000 homes give their financial support and a small amount of personal involvement to the HPIA. Come the first Wednesday of the month to be a part of the Harvey Park Improvement Association.

Cop Shop volunteers give police time to fight crimeHere’s a quick quiz: The best use of a police officer’s time is:
a) filling out mountains of paperwork; b) shuttling police cars in for oil changes; c) listening to gripes that have nothing to do with police work; d) putting bad guys in jail and keeping the streets safe.
If you chose “d” and care about your community, take a look at the Bear Valley Cop Shop. The storefront in the Bear Valley Shopping Center has 19 citizen volunteers who are making a real difference in law enforcement. They take reports, fingerprint kids, answer questions and do whatever a civilian can take care of so a sworn officer doesn’t have to. The reason is simple: to make sure commanders pull police officers off the streets less than they’d otherwise have to.
Just taking a patrol car in for routine maintenance can cost the department about two hours of an officer’s time. With a volunteer doing the shuttling, the cost is offset and that officer can be deployed to the streets. Two hours can add up to thousands of hours and save lots of money. In September alone, Cop Shop volunteers put in more than 500 hours, taking 22 reports, shuttling 74 police cars and helping 104 citizens. Not bad for fewer than two dozen volunteers at a 7-year-old nonprofit.
The program is called Community Operated Policing. Participants get regular training and are supervised by Denver officers. The volunteers serve because they care about their community and know it’s in everyone’s interest to keep a strong police force, especially when times are tight. They pitch in on non-emergency matters from stolen license tags to raising money for the KYGO Christmas Crusade for Children. Last year, the Cop Shop raised more than $2,000.

Halloween Decoration ContestHalloween was a lot of fun! We had three HP members submitting their pictures for the decoration contest. The scariest was the house of George and Linda Wood who say that they moved to Harvey Park in 1991 because it has always been a nice neighborhood and the houses are the right size for them.
The most creative was by Bernie Martinez & Christie Gonzales who moved to Harvey Park 13 months ago to be near aging family members. Christie was born & raised in the HP area; and Bernie & Christie both went to Doull. They said: “We just love the area and are sure we will be happy here for years to come! “
For the funniest, I had to use mine since nobody else submitted. We are Julia and Alex Bourlakov. We moved to Harvey Park about 7 years ago because we got more house than we had in Highlands area for less money. Now we love it for access to shopping, mountains, and a great community!
Thank you, George and Linda, Bernie and Christie for your contribution to the spirit of the Halloween! We are excited and honored to award your $100 prizes at the meeting!

Again this year the Harvey Park Improvement Association will award four one thousand dollar scholarships. To qualify the student must live within the association's boundaries and be graduating from high school in the spring. A student may obtain an application from any member of the scholarship committee.
From the membership dues collected Harvey Park Improvement Association is proud to continue supporting our youth with scholarships.

Harvey Park residents have seen prices go up and prices come back down. We have seen trends come and go. The good news is that we are experiencing a positive trend these days with home values climbing slowly but steadily. Statistically speaking there were 106 homes sold in the neighborhood over the past 12 months.
From 7-12 months ago; November 9, 2010 to May 9, 2011 the average sold price was $165,751, the median price was $170,000. The lowest price was $90,320 and the highest price was $249,900. From 4-6 months ago; May 10, 2011 to August 9, 2011 the average sold price was $169,894 and the median price was $167,900.
The lowest price was $98,300 and the highest price was $222,000. During the past 3 months, from August 10, 2011 to November 9, 2011 the average sold price was $175,911 and the median price was $179,000. The lowest sold price was 115,000 and the highest price was $215,000.
The trend is positive and there is opportunity for buyers to make good deals, and for sellers good clean properties are selling for decent prices. Keep in mind that the average and median prices are affected by the number of distressed sold properties that make up a portion of the total sold. The averages are not necessarily indicative of your own property value.

Kunsmiller Creative Arts AcademyThe PTO at Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy would like to invite all residents and community members of the Harvey Park Area to join us for morning Zumba Classes!
They are held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:15 to 9:15 in our Dance Gym. We are located at 2250 S Quitman Way 720-424-0201. We do not have classes when DPS schools are closed for snow days, school breaks or holidays.

A Different Look at Christmas 2011
This holiday season I would love to share brilliant ideas that I got from one of my friends. Even in tough times when people are cautious about their budgets there are other ways to give. I remember one Christmas my daughter gave me set of gift certificates for dog washes, car washes, poop-scoops and other acts of service around the house. Since those were beyond her regular chores I thought that those acts of service were most precious gifts.
It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a box? Everyone gets a haircut. How about gift certificates from your local hair salon or barber? Gym membership? Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, local car shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like the lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.
There are a many family-owned restaurants in our area offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains - this is about supporting your local businesses with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle?
Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? She probably would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day, occasional massage or a yoga session. My computer could use a tune-up, and I know I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.
Plan your holiday outings at local, owner-operated restaurant. How about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theater? Musicians need love too, so find an avenue showcasing local bands.
Honestly, do we really need to buy another load of presents that will probably be forgotten the next year? Instead of buying another exciting piece of plastic start a college fund for a kid: those $20s can add up to a gift that will keep on giving. Thankfully, we have many local businesses that have been serving Harvey Park area for many years. During these times of globalization we can still take advantage of local services and keep the money in our community. Christmas doesn't have to be about shopping, stress and presents. Sometimes, acts of service can be more memorable and show that we care about each other.
