At Tour de France, doping is always part of the story DUESSELDORF, Germany

(AP) — A scene from Godfa-ther III about sums up where the Tour de France is with doping as the 2017 edition begins on Saturday.

In the movie, Al Pacino’s character Michael Corleone laments that his efforts to become a bona fide busi-nessman are being undermined by his family’s underworld con-nections. “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in,” he wails.

Likewise, cycling’s show-case race seemed largely to have extricated itself from the swamp of widespread blood doping that characterized Lance Armstrong’s era. The 12 riders banned or provisionally sus-pended by cycling’s governing body, the UCI, in 2015 and 2016 for using blood-boosting agents like Armstrong were largely second-tier. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Josh Harrison knows the signs. They’re unmissable. Solid starting pitching. Stellar work by the bullpen. Timely hits and aggressive baserunning.

It’s a formula that carried the Pittsburgh Pirates to the play-offs from 2013-15, one that is starting to pop up a little more regularly as Pittsburgh tries to keep pace in a lukewarm National League Central race.

Jameson Taillon scattered seven hits over 6 1/3 innings, Gregory Polanco and John Jaso hit solo home runs and the Pirates shut down Tampa Bay 4-0 on Thursday night for their fourth win in their last six games as they try to scramble back near the .500 mark as the halfway point looms this weekend.

“I think a lot of guys that have been here, the core guys, we’ve been through adversity before,” said Harrison, who had two hits and was also hit twice to raise his total to a major-league high 18. “So what was thrown at us earlier this year, things that are still being thrown at us,

we know at the end of the day, we’ve been in adversity, we’ve got to keep playing and know everybody will come around.”

Andrew McCutchen went 3 for 3 with a single and an RBI and is hitting .397 since June 1 to raise his season average to .278.

“He’s an elite player,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “He’s in a good place, he’s confident, he’s convicted in the box. He’s showing us the ability he’s had.”

Taillon (4-2) walked two and struck out four in his lon-gest outing since returning from a battle with testicular cancer earlier this month, lowering his ERA to 2.97 despite allowing at least one base runner in six of the seven innings he worked. Considering he was undergoing cancer treatment six weeks ago wondering if his season was in jeopardy, Taillon will take it.

“Time away is tough,” Taillon said. “You’re sitting there watching guys play and you’re not able to contribute. That’s tough. I wanted a chance to come back and I wanted a chance to pitch for something and here I am.”

Chris Archer (6-5) allowed three runs in six innings, striking out five without issuing a walk for Tampa Bay, which has lost four of five. Logan Morrison and Shane Peterson had two hits apiece for the Rays but Tampa Bay went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. The Rays left 21 runners on base while losing the final two games of the inter-league series.

“I don’t want to make excuses but we hit the ball pretty hard all series long,” said Rays outfielder Steven Sousa Jr., who went 0 for 5.

Though the Rays kept pecking away at him, Taillon worked in and out of trouble with relative ease. Despite all the traffic, the Rays only reached third base once against him. Taillon exited with runners on first and second and one out in the seventh. Tony Watson, demoted from his closer’s role earlier this month, struck out Corey Dickerson and got Evan Longoria to pop up to first base to end the threat.

Archer, trying to win his third consecutive start, couldn’t quite keep pace. Three consecu-tive one-out Pittsburgh singles in the third, the last by the reju-venated McCutchen, gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Jaso made it 2-0 with his sixth home run of the season leading off the fourth. Polanco, dropped from third to sixth in the batting order while mired in a deep slump, drilled his sixth homer to right center to push the advantage to 3-0.

“Cutch was MVP for a reason,” Archer said. “I’m glad I was able to limit the damage a little bit but they definitely gave me a tough time.”

SALUTTING THE UMPPNC Park gave umpire John

Tumpane a standing ovation before the first pitch, a way of saying thanks after Tumpane helped save a woman in dis-tress on the Roberto Clemente Bridge on Wednesday. The rescue was caught by a photog-rapher for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Tumpane’s selfless act made him an unlikely celeb-rity. Tumpane, who spent part of Thursday doing a series of interviews, continued to down-play his role, saying he was simply in the right place at the right time.

TRAINER’S ROOMRays: Activated reliever

Brad Boxberger off the 60-day DL and designated reliever Danny Farquhar for assignment. Boxberger was an All-Star in 2015 when he led the American League with 41 saves. He will work in a setup role for cur-rent Tampa Bay closer Alex Colome. Farquhar was 2-2 with a 4.11 ERA in 37 appearances with the Rays this season.

UP NEXTRays: Continue an eight-

game trip in Baltimore on Friday when rookie Jake Faria (3-0, 2.10 ERA) takes the hill against Chris Tillman (1-5, 8.39 ERA). The Orioles took two of three from the Rays in Tampa last weekend.

Pirates: Host the strug-gling San Francisco Giants in a weekend series starting Friday. Gerrit Cole (6-6, 4.11 ERA) looks for his fourth straight vic-tory in the opener.

NEW YORK (AP) — WNBA teams and players have gotten creative on social media to try and get out the vote for the All-Star Game.

Whether it’s making fun videos, appealing to college fan bases or even calling in a friend with a huge following on Twitter, the ploys seem to be working as fan voting is way up.

The initial returns were released Thursday night and there’s a 110 percent increase in votes cast from the same time frame in 2015. There was no All-Star Game last year because of the Rio Olympics.

“Our players aren’t just athletic they are darn cre-ative and they are hilarious,” WNBA President Lisa Bor-ders said. “I have to tell you, the PR teams supporting our players and franchise are to be commended in every way, the unique approaches they took whether it’s the grandma char-acters, slick graphics, the Wash-ington Mystics did national watch day. People use different approaches.”

Connecticut created a series of web videos that feature Jon-quel Jones, Jasmine Thomas and Courtney Williams dressed as older versions of themselves, wearing glasses, bathrobes and slippers.

“I just think I’m a bit of an old soul. A lot of how I act is how I’m going to be when I get older,” Thomas joked. “I some-times walk around the house with a house robe already.”

All three of the Sun players were happy to do the videos and potentially help get the vote out. Jones, who is having a breakout season, is sitting in third in East frontcourt voting, sitting behind Elena Delle Donne and Tina Charles.

“It’s always great to do videos where everyone gets to see another side of our person-alities. It’s fun to see so many people enjoying the A-Team!,” said Moore, who is the top vote-getter overall.

She was happy the overall numbers were up.

“It’s exciting to see so many people voting and showing their appreciation for our game and for me,” she said.

“Hopefully we can keep the momentum going and get more of my Lynx teammates to Seattle.”

Joining Moore in the West frontcourt is teammate Sylvia Fowles and Los Angeles’ Can-dace Parker. Seattle’s Sue Bird is leading the guards with Diana Taurasi of Phoenix second in the balloting.

Tiffany Mitchell is second among East guards despite spending most of her time coming off the bench for

Indiana. The Fever put out a plea to the South Carolina fan base where Mitchell went to college to get out and vote. The Gamecocks have led attendance the past few seasons in wom-en’s college basketball. Fellow Gamecocks alum Allisha Gray, who plays for Dallas, is seventh in the voting.

“It feels great to be a poten-tial starter for this game without being any every game starter with the Fever,” Mitchell said. “It’s humbling for sure, and I feel like my impact on both sides of the ball keeps me engaged even when offensively could be an off night. Very thankful to the Fever fans and of course my Gamecocks for holding the voting down and continuing to support my career.”

TORONTO (AP) — As Ubaldo Jimenez hit spot after spot to mow down the Toronto Blue Jays, catcher Caleb Joseph felt like he was playing a video game.

Jimenez pitched two-hit ball over eight innings, Jonathan Schoop had two hits and an RBI and Baltimore beat Toronto 2-0 on Thursday night. After allowing a season-worst nine runs against the Rays in his pre-vious start, Jimenez turned it around against Toronto. Joseph said Jimenez was “unbeliev-able” and “flat-out dominant.” He compared it to a video game pitcher with the power and accuracy settings cranked to the max.

“There really wasn’t a bad pitch you could call with Ubaldo tonight,” Joseph said. “He had everything working. It was like perfect, magic touch on the power and location. It makes you giFriday, June 30, 2017 out there when you have that type of performance. I’m so happy for him.” Jimenez said he felt good warming up in the bullpen and kept it going into the game.

“I could throw any pitch in any count,” he said. “Every-thing was moving. The splitter was crazy, the slider was good. The fastball was moving in and out. When I threw the no-hitter in Colorado, I had the same feeling.”

t Jimenez held Atlanta hitless at Turner Field in April 2010, the first no-hitter in Rockies

history.Baltimore has won consecu-

tive road series after going more than two months without one. It took two of three at Cincinnati from April 18-20, then didn’t win a series away from home before doing so in Tampa Bay last weekend.

Jimenez walked one and struck out a season-high eight. He retired his first eight batters before Ryan Goins doubled in the third, then got another five straight outs.

“That’s the best game I’ve seen him pitch,” Orioles man-ager Buck Showalter said.

Jimenez cut his career ERA in eight games at Rogers Centre from 6.33 to 4.89. He’s 8-5 in 19 career games against Toronto, his most victories against any opponent other than San Diego (9).

“He was good tonight, but he’s always had our number,” Blue Jays manager John Gib-bons said. J.A. Happ (2-5) allowed eight hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings for Toronto.

Brad Brach picked up his 15th save in 18 chances.

Schoop hit a sacrifice fly in the third, and Joseph, a late add to the lineup in place of injured catcher Welington Castillo, hit an RBI single in the sixth.

the risk. And that’s despite the thousands of yearly tests and the regular scrutiny of riders’ blood for tell-tale signs of doping.

For Brian Cookson, president of the sport’s ruling body, the UCI, Cardoso’s positive result shows that testing is working.

“I don’t think it demonstrates that there are many, many other riders doping,” he told the AP. “From time to time an athlete is foolish, and the chances are they are going to get caught.”

Cycling can rightly argue that it is one of the most scruti-nized sports and far from alone in being affected by the doping scourge. Its anti-doping unit says it conducted a whopping 15,000 tests last year — the bulk of them on male profes-sional road racers. On top of that, 41 pro teams are being monitored by the blood passport program that cycling helped to pioneer, tracking riders’ blood values over time for any suspi-cious variations. Pro teams pro-vide more than two-thirds of the costs.

“From being a pariah and an outcast, almost, because of our poor doping record, now I think the reverse is true,” Cookson said. “We have a very good rep-utation in the anti-doping world and the wider sports world.”

At the Tour, cycling’s anti-doping unit is planning an average of eight tests each day — always including the race leader and winner of each stage, plus six others. The best riders’ samples will be stored for 10 years, for possible retesting as detection methods improve. Anti-doping officials and French police have again agreed to share intelligence, to help target tests. In exceptional circum-stances, sample collectors can even visit riders in the middle of the night. The anti-doping unit director, Francesca Rossi, told the AP that Cardoso’s positive test doesn’t signal a renewed EPO trend. “I’m not worrying because it’s one positive for a long time. Statistically, this is acceptable,” she said. “We are not anymore in the EPO era,

for sure.” Tripping up Cardoso before he took the start spared the Tour further embarrassment. The 32-year-old said sample collectors visited him at home on June 18.Irish rider Nicolas Roche, embarking on his eighth Tour, said he was surprised but also relieved that Cardoso was caught because “when someone tests positive once in a while it also means that the test works, which is in a way reassuring.”

“I was just like, ‘Really, do riders still think they can get away with it?’” he said.

The use of chemical boosters has been part of the story of the physically punishing Tour since its earliest days. That has never stopped millions of people from lining its roads each summer.

“You had to be naive to think it couldn’t happen again. And it will happen again. It’s logical.

Just because we haven’t seen riders caught for EPO for a while doesn’t mean that riders weren’t taking it,” said Marc Madiot, head of the French FDJ team.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Tennis star Venus Williams caused a car crash earlier this month that led to the death of a passenger in another vehicle, according to a police report released Thursday.

Palm Beach Gardens police say witnesses told investigators that Williams ran a red light in her 2010 Toyota Sequoia SUV, causing a June 9 crash that injured 78-year-old Jerome Barson, who died two weeks later.

The report says a 2016 Hyundai Accent driven by Barson’s wife, Linda, crashed into the side of Williams’ SUV. Linda Barson told investigators that she was approaching the intersection when her light turned green and that she was unable to stop in time. Linda Barson suffered unspecified moderate injuries. Williams, who turned 37 on June 17, was not hurt.

She told investigators she had entered the six-lane intersection on a green light but had been forced to stop midpoint by traffic ahead of her. She said she did not see the Barsons’ car when she crossed into their lanes.

Palm Beach Gardens Maj. Paul Rogers says the crash remains under investigation. Williams, who has a residence in Palm Beach Gardens, has

not been cited or charged. The report says she was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Williams’ attorney Malcolm Cunningham said in a statement that Williams expressed “her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one.”

Michael Steinger, the attorney for Linda Barson, had no immediate comment.

Venus Williams, the older sister of tennis star Serena Williams, has won seven Grand Slam titles, including five at her favorite tournament, Wimbledon.

She revealed in 2011 that she’d been diag-nosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease.

Her ranking fell outside the top 100 as she coped with her illness and injuries, and from 2011 to 2014, she only advanced past the third round at a major once.

Early round losses continued to mount for Williams and questions about retirement came up time and again. Those questions are still asked, but she had a career renaissance, and in January reached the finals of the Australian Open, where she lost to her sister.

The crash was first reported by TMZ.

Police: Venus Williams at fault in fatal car crash

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — The complexity of a federal fraud case against former employees of a truck stop chain owned by the family of Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and Ten-nessee Gov. Bill Haslam could cause the trial to take up to six weeks, attorneys told the judge Thursday.

Those indicted include former Pilot President Mark Hazelwood, former vice presi-dents John “Stick” Freeman and Scott “Scooter” Wombold, and five other former members of the sales team.

Pilot has paid a $92 mil-lion federal penalty and spent $85 million on a class-action settlement with 5,500 trucking companies in connection with a scheme to cheat customers out of promised discounts and rebates. The Haslams have denied previous knowledge of any wrongdoing and have not been charged.

Ten other former Pilot employees previously pleaded guilty in the scheme, which came to light after federal agents raided the company’s Knoxville headquarters in April 2013.

Senior U.S. District Judge

Curtis L. Collier on Thursday approved moving the trial to Chattanooga from Pilot’s head-quarters city of Knoxville. Moving the trial about 100 miles (160 kilometers) to the southwest improves the chances of finding jurors who were less likely to have seen “inflamma-tory reports in the media,” Col-lier said.

The trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 31.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Trey Hamilton said the government believed a fair an impartial jury could have been seated in Knoxville, but did not object to moving the trial.

Hamilton said the case against the former employees could take between 20 and 30 days, while defense attorneys said presenting their evidence could take the same amount of time. The judge said he hopes to streamline the trial to keep it within a four-to-six week timeframe.

“With a case of this length, we ask an awful lot of our juries,” Collier said.

Roger Dickson, a Chatta-nooga attorney representing Freeman, spoke on behalf of the defense attorneys gathered

in the courtroom. He said he expects there to be some dis-agreement over expert testi-mony the government plans to introduce at trial. Prosecutors said the length of their case will be dependent on the summary charts of complex financial transactions being allowed into evidence.

The indictment outlines a scheme that took place over a five-year period in which sales staff often promised customers one discount but gave them a different, lesser one. It offers several examples of employees and their bosses discussing the need to coordinate the lies they were telling customers so as not to get caught.

Freeman advised sales staff to “say one thing, do another” when it came to dealing with customers, according to the indictment. And one email quotes Freeman as advising colleagues that “we just need to sing from the same hymn book.”

Other employee emails in the indictment discuss the need to determine which customers might be sophisticated enough to detect the fraud and prey only on the unsophisticated ones.

Trial of former Pilot executives could

take up to 6 weeks

BOSTON (AP) — David Price won for the second time in three starts, Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez hit solo home runs, and the Boston Red Sox rallied from a three-run deficit to beat the Minnesota Twins 6-3 on Thursday night.

Tzu-Wei Lin singled and tripled for his first big league multihit game. Jackie Bradley Jr. had three hits and an RBI.

Price (3-2) threw a season-high 112 pitches over seven innings, allowing three runs and six hits with seven strike-outs and no walks. Craig Kim-brel pitched a one-hit ninth for his AL-leading 22nd save in 23 chances, finishing Boston’s last home game before the All-Star break.

Kyle Gibson (4-6) allowed five runs — three earned — and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Betts started Boston’s come-back when he homered heading off the fourth, and Bradley’s RBI double pulled the Red Sox to 3-2 in the fifth. Left fielder Robbie Grossman got in posi-tion to field a carom off the Green Monster, but the ball hit the ladder above the scoreboard and dropped straight down, allowing Ramirez to score from first.

Christian Vazquez followed with a grounder that hit the wrist of shortstop Jorge Polan-co’s glove hand and bounced away for an error.

Deven Marrero hit a tying RBI grounder with one out on a dribbler to third, and Betts’

single put Boston ahead 4-3.Ramirez’s sixth-inning

homer chased Gibson, and Lin — who made his big league debut Monday — tripled off BuFriday, June 30, 2017 Boshers starting the seventh and scored on Marrero’s double.

Minnesota built its lead on Joe Mauer’s RBI grounder in the first and Polanco’s two-run double in the fourth.

Right-hander Phil Hughes, activated Wednesday following a rehab stint with Triple-A Rochester following a shoulder strain, came out of the bullpen in the seventh for his first relief appearance since June 9 last year. Hughes allowed one hit in 1 2/3 scoreless innings, struck out two and walked none. He had not pitched for the Twins since May 21.

Price, Betts, Ramirez lead Red Sox over

Twins 6-3SOCHI, Russia (AP) —

Germany and its coach Joachim Loew have already exceeded their expectations by advancing to Sunday’s Confederations Cup final.

Loew took mostly young and untried players to represent the World Cup winner in Russia, and rested several stars ahead of defending their title next year.

This new German genera-tion rewarded the faith of their experienced coach — who set a goal of reaching the semifinals — with a 4-1 win over Mexico on Thursday.

A battle-tested Chile team awaits in St. Petersburg as the next test in the German players’ international education.

“For us, (the results were) not so important,” team man-ager Oliver Bierhoff said after the semifinals win in Sochi, “but seeing how the players behave and how they perform in certain circumstances.”

Germany was assured against a Mexico team that fought hard after giving up two goals in the first eight minutes to Leon Goretzka, the 22-year-old Schalke midfielder having a breakout tournament.

“I think we played very mature,” said defender Antonio Ruediger, a squad veteran at 24 with almost four years’ national-team experience. “I think not everyone thought we would get so far, but I always believed in the quality of the team.”

The deep pool of German talent in Russia should concern those countries which seek to dethrone the world champion.

Absent from Loew’s squad here are goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, defenders Mats Hum-

mels and Jerome Boateng, midfielder Toni Kroos, and for-wards Mesut Ozil and Thomas Mueller from his 2014 World Cup who and aim to return next year.

They also risked burnout after a busy 2016 summer reaching the European Champi-onship semifinals, and another season of Champions League games.

Loew has suggested in Russia that up to four of his squad here could force their way into his World Cup plans.

“Our team has learned a lot,”

Loew said Thursday. “That experience is going to help and stay with my players not only now, but throughout the years.”

Loew picked players on Thursday from top clubs like Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Still, they need to experience the demands of living and playing together at a tournament against teams from outside Europe.

“These situations for young players are not necessarily something you can simulate in friendlies in November,” Loew said in Sochi this week.

MIAMI (AP) — Scoring early and often, the New York Mets made up for a slow start to their 10-game trip.

The Mets took the lead in the first inning for the fourth game in a row and won the rubber game of their series against the Miami Marlins 6-3 Thursday.

New York went 5-5 in three cities despite being swept in four games by the Dodgers starting the trip.

“We’ll take it,” manager Terry Collins said. “We didn’t get down and pack up and go home. We showed up every day and played hard.”

Jay Bruce capped the trip by scoring twice and delivering a pair of RBI hits, including a single in the Mets’ two-run first .

“To get the momentum early is huge,” Bruce said. “The person it’s probably the biggest for is our pitcher — to settle in and get in a groove and not have to feel like they have to make every single pitch.”

Seth Lugo (3-1), making his fourth start of the year, kept the lead. He went six innings and allowed three runs, including Giancarlo Stanton’s 21st homer .

“I struck him out on the same pitch the time before,” Lugo said. “It happens.”

Addison Reed, New York’s fourth pitcher, pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth to earn his 12th save.

T.J. Rivera had three hits and two RBIs, while Curtis Grand-erson scored twice and drove in a run for the Mets, who over-took Miami for third place in the NL East. They’ve outscored opponents 41-17 winning five of their past six games.

“It’s a steppingstone in the right direction,” Collins said. “We hope our starting pitching is starting to fall in place for us, and if it does we’ve got an exciting second half ahead of us.”

The Marlins, by contrast, are sputtering. They’ve scored only 21 runs in their past eight games.

“We put ourselves in trouble every day in the series in the first inning getting behind,” man-ager Don Mattingly said. “At some point, you’re not going to be able to continue to get your-self back to win games.”

Jose Urena (6-3) gave up five runs, three earned, in six innings. He retired his final 11 batters but still lost for the first time in his past six decisions.

Granderson led off the first with a double, Bruce hit an RBI single and Rivera doubled home a run.

A bad throw by rookie short-stop J.T. Riddle helped the Mets score three runs, two unearned, in the third. Bruce’s bloop double scored one run, and another came home on Rivera’s RBI single.

Riddle made amends with a nifty unassisted double play in the eighth.

The Marlins bunched three consecutive two-out singles and scored twice in the sixth. The rally might have been even bigger, but Dee Gordon was thrown out trying to steal early in the inning, a questionable move with his team down four runs.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) —Tom Corcoran, an Olympic skier who founded the Water-ville Valley ski resort in New Hampshire that became popular with racers and celebrities, has died. He was 85.

Former assistant Jan Stearns said Corcoran died Tuesday at his home in Seabrook Island, South Carolina, following a brief illness. Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, whose family bought the resort in 2010, offered his condolences Wednesday and said he grew up skiing with Corcoran’s family.

“Tom wasn’t just the founder of Waterville Valley, he was the spirit that grew it into one of

the most storied destinations in New England,” he said.

Corcoran was born Nov. 16, 1931, and grew up in Canada, where he attended an uncon-ventional school in St. Jovite, Quebec, set up for the family than ran a nearby resort.

“We skied to school or rode the runners of the gar-bage sleigh, and skied every afternoon on the rope-tow hill behind the Gray Rocks Inn,” Corcoran told a ski industry group for a biography in 2003.

“At some point in those early St. Jovite years, my par-ents realized that I could ski, but couldn’t read, write, add or subtract very well despite our tutor’s best efforts.”

Corcoran was sent to New Hampshire for high school and graduated from Dartmouth Col-lege in 1954. He competed in the 1956 Olympics and again in 1960, when he placed fourth in the Giant Slalom — the best finish for an American man in the event until 2002, when Bode Miller won a silver medal.

Corcoran also earned a mas-ter’s degree from Harvard Busi-ness School in 1959.

After time spent learning the ski industry in Colorado, Corcoran returned to New Hampshire and purchased the Waterville Inn and 425 acres at the base of Mt. Tecumseh. He opened Waterville Valley Resort in the winter of 1966-67, and quickly attracted skiers from around the region, including the Kennedy family.

According to the Waterville Valley Resort Association, Corcoran became friends with Robert Kennedy while working on his senatorial campaign and the resort became a favorite for the Kennedys and their children. “Bobby’s Run” was named for Kennedy after his assassination in 1968.

Corcoran also worked to bring top competitions to Water-ville Valley. Up until the 1990s, it hosted 11 World Cup events, including the 1969 World Cup Slalom and Giant Slalom finals.

“Tom touched many lives around the world. Lucky for all of us his legacy lives on in Waterville Valley — his dream, his vision, his creation, his hard work,” said Stearns, who served as Corcoran’s executive assis-tant for years.

Tim Smith, the resort’s president and general manager, said Corcoran deserves much credit for developing Water-ville Valley and inspiring gen-erations of ski industry workers around the country, but should mostly be remembered for his passion for skiing.

DEAR ABBY: My elderly father’s dearest friend committed suicide yesterday. He shot himself in the head. The family wasn’t even aware that he was depressed. Dad has lost three wonderful friends this way in recent years. He’s heartbroken thinking that his buddies were secretly suffering.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the rate of suicide for men 70 and older in the U.S. is more than double the overall suicide rate. Yet, with all of our suicide prevention efforts, this high-risk group seems to be ignored. How can we help prevent these tragedies? What are the signs of depression in older men? And what can families do if they suspect depression in “Dad,” “Gramps” or “Uncle John”? Thank you for any help you can provide. -- VAN IN MASSACHUSETTS

DEAR VAN: Please convey to your father how sorry I am for his loss. I think the first thing people have to remember is that men in general do not manifest depression the way women do because women are more open about sharing their feelings. Men, particularly older men, were not raised to do that because they were taught that expressing emotion was “weak,” so they stay silent. And men who were once breadwinners, active and vital, can become depressed when they retire.

Among the RISK FACTORS are: --Havinglostawifeorsignificantother; --Beingaloneandisolated; --Concernaboutbeingaburden; --Substanceabuse(alcoholorprescriptiondrugs); -- Firearms in the house.SIGNS TO LOOK FOR include: --Lackofenergy; --Lackofmotivation; --Lessinterestineatingorgettingoutofthehouse; -- Loss of interest in activities the person once enjoyed.A common mistake people make is thinking these things are happening because a person is old. If

you observe a change in someone’s behavior, it is all right to ask the person what’s going on. Keep in mind that people who feel connected are less likely to harm themselves. Isolation is the enemy. Visit them, or take them out so they won’t feel alone. It’s also important to help seniors meet others they can relate to, particularly if their friends are dying off. A senior center can provide a place to socialize and meet new people. Exercise is important, too, and many senior centers provide exercise facilities. Equally important is volunteering. Older men are valuable assets to the community and should be encouraged to regard themselves that way. They have a lifetime of experience to offer, which should not be wasted. By helping these men get and stay connected, you could actually be saving a life.

A final thought: As people age, they often have physical problems that are associated with depres-sion. (Heart disease is one.) If you need advice about how to approach someone about your worries, an excellent resource is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The toll-free number is 880-273-8255.

Happy Birthday: Don’t take anything or anyone for granted. Cover your steps and make sure you have every-thing in order. Protect your personal information and avoid being too open about your possessions or your beliefs. Stick to the people you know you can trust and pick up the information that will ensure you will not be subject to unwanted change. Your numbers are 8, 19, 25, 27, 31, 34, 47. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Travel and dealing with siblings, friends or neighbors will pose problems for you if you aren’t able to control the situation. Overindulgence on your part or someone else’s could damage your relationship. 3 stars TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Physical alterations will boost your ego and put a twinkle back in your eyes. Your confidence will help you get ahead professionally and personally. Celebrate with people you find inspirational and leave room for romance. 5 stars GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Look for the good in everyone and everything. A positive attitude will deter others from messing with you. Don’t let negativity or grumpiness bring you down. If someone around you can’t be amicable, seek out someone else instead. 5 stars CANCER (June 21-July 22): Make romance a priority. Personal physical changes geared toward better health and fitness will pay off, while indulgence will set you back. Make wise choices and eliminate bad habits. Start a new hobby. 2 stars LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Make your personal life a priority. A subtle change will give you the pick-me-up you need. Plan a romantic get-together or a night out with friends. An unexpected conversation will give you something to think about. 4 stars VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Be careful when dealing with your money or your possessions. Someone will be anxious to take advantage of you if you aren’t careful about donations and lending to others. Focus on your health and your future. 3 stars LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Focus on what you can do to make your life better. Do your best to stabilize any situation by doing what’s best for you. Added discipline will give you the courage to do what needs to be done. 3 stars SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Control your emotions. If you or someone else overreacts, it will set off a chain of events that will slow you down. Keep your life simple and move forward at a steady pace. People with bad habits are best kept at arm’s length. 3 stars SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Offer advice and encouragement, but when it comes to making a donation or taking on what doesn’t belong to you, take a pass. Overindulgence could lead to disaster. Dismiss bad habits instead of feeding them. 4 stars CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Too much of anything will end up weighing you down. Emotional persuasion will prompt you to get involved in something that isn’t in your best interest. Discourage changes that could influence your status or reputation. 2 stars AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Don’t learn the hard way. Do your research before you get caught up in something that will end up costing you physically, emotionally or financially. Problems will arise if you don’t abide by the rules. Be careful while traveling. 5 stars PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Partnership plans or signing up to help someone will encourage you to put in more time developing new ways to use your skills. In-depth discussions will bring you closer to your dreams. 3 stars
