BeautyGuide

This Months Top Tip

Before applying your powder, try blotting your foundation with

a tissue. This will remove anyexcess oils, and help to stop

you from getting shiny.

Even when your skin is looking tired and pale, you can look blooming lovely by adding atouch of colour to your cheeks.

Blushers are an essential part of a beauty regime for those without a natural rosy glow. There are so many product types and colours to choose from and many different ways toapply them.

If makeup is like an artist's pallet, then blusher is the sculpting tool. Whatever face shapeyou were born with, you can dramatically alter your look and refresh your appearance.

if you have slightly chubby cheeks and would like a more contoured look, apply blusher in the hollows, just below your cheekbones. For accuracy, suck in yourcheeks and brush in upward strokes in the hollows. Use an illuminating highlighter alongthe top of your cheekbones. This will create the illusion of fuller cheekbones and aslimmer face.

the apples of your cheeks are the fullest part. If you use a pale illuminatingshade applied directly to your apples, it will instantly create a fresh looking glow.

do not get carried away with applying blusher. If applied elsewhere onyour face it will look as though you are wearing the wrong shade of foundation. Stick tothe apples or hollows. If you want to add colour in other parts, opt for a bronzer that canbe swept all over your skin instead.

Hold a piece of blank white paper up to your makeup-free face. What colour jumps out? Most average, pale skin has yellow undertones which look best with warm blushers suchas peach or brown. If you can identify red undertones, opt for cool pinks. Red tonesusually suit silver jewellery, while yellow suit gold.

17 www.visiontimes.co.uk

Page 19: Vision Magazine Issue 2

the ideal choice, for most. Powders can either beloose, compact or in ball form. They are easy to apply andwill not overly disturb your foundation base. Once appliedover your base, powder blushers are long lasting and easyto add to for an evening look.

these must be applied overliquid foundation but before you set your foundation witha powder. You can obtain a fresh, youthful finish with acream or stick blusher and are a good choice on warmsummery days as they are more likely to stay put.

these are an acquired skill. Fluids, sometimes described as cheek stains, can bedifficult to blend to a natural finish. Lots of blending may disturb your base so they arebest used in small areas, like your apples. These are great for adding a healthy glow toyour face well-protected face on holiday.

7 Easy steps to make you look younger…

Step 1. Downplay wrinkles by applying highlighter to creases. This will reflect the light andcounter the shadow. Concealers only make lines look more prominent

Step 2. Use a mask to tone and tighten your skin. The tightening effect is cosmetic andtemporary, but using a mask has other benefits as well, such as cleaning out your pores, and conditioning your skin

Step 3. Brighten droopy eyes: Grooming eyebrows gives the illusion of lifted lids, andhaving more skin showing at the brow bone opens up the entire eye

Step 4. Instant Eye Lift - use a lash curler to make eyes look more open and alive

Step 5. Skip the face powder, they tend to collect in creases and make wrinkles moreprominent; and the dry powder look is out, anyway

Step 6. If you’ve got longish hair, pull it back into a ponytail. It’s a youthful hairstyle, forone, but the point is it pulls the skin around your temples up and back

Step 7. Use a good moisturiser to hydrate and plump up your skin cells. Make sure it ismineral oil free so it doesn’t clog your pores and cause breakouts

HoroscopesOct 2011

Libra (Sep 24th-Oct 25th)The first three weeks of October isthe time of year when retreat isabsolutely necessary. Giveyourself a time-out from the stressand impose some long overduesolitude in your life, so you canproperly regroup and rebalance.

Scorpio (Oct 24th-Nov 22nd)Stop and consider before you startto speak and you aren't likely toput your foot in it! In family andsocial arrangements let others saywhat they need to say before yougive an opinion. If your words canbe misconstrued, think of how toput your views across moreclearly.

Sagittarius (Nov 23rd-Dec 22nd)Chatting with friends andcolleagues will be more than just apleasurable way of spending time.Conversations shared could beincredibly enlightening. Peoplearound you know what they'retalking about and very soon youwill feel considerably betterinformed about a recent matterthat's caused you a lot ofconfusion.

Capricorn (Dec 23rd-Jan 20th)The more assertive you are, theeasier it will be to live life on yourown terms. Taking on newresponsibilities will give you thechance to put some distancebetween you and situationscausing you upset ordisappointment.

Aquarius (Jan 21st-Feb 19th)Circumstances continue to call foryou to show you will not bemanipulated by those who thinkthey can treat you like a puppet. You can't show someoneobedience and respect whenyou're starting to discover howdevious and false they can be.

Pisces (Feb 20th-March 20th)Create a sense of buoyancy byemphasising the positive andeliminating the negative. If yourfirst attempt at something newdoesn't succeed, pick yourself up,dust yourself off and start all overagain. Be inspired by a challengerather than letting it put you off.

Aries (March 21st-April 20th)You need to make a quickjudgement call; having to maketough decisions will be stressful. There is no relying on outsidesupport when circumstances callfor an immediate response; you'regoing to have to do this alone.Past training may have taught youa lot of things but there is nobetter learning than being in thethick of it all.

Taurus (April 21st-May 21st)A happy blend of romance andcreativity will make this a day toremember forever. A lucky breakwill enhance your innate talentsand encourage you to indulgeyour creative notions. You're beingencouraged to exploit your fullpotential. Valuable agreements canbe reached in existing unions.

Gemini (May 22nd-June 21st)A welcome change to your usualroutines could have lasting andpleasing results. If you're enjoyingthe early stages of a newfriendship or romance, a good signwill be when you receive aninvitation to meet your partner'sfamily or close friends.

Cancer (June 22nd-July 23rd)A competition is by no means overso don't feel anxious if today'sefforts don't come up to scratch. You're doing a lot better than acompetitor so there are reasons tobe cheerful. Challengingconditions will get the adrenalinflowing and makes you feel alive.

Leo (July 24th-August 23rd)An obligation to a youngster orrelative may force you to have torearrange some plans at the lastminute. Extra expenses related tothese circumstances aren't goingto please you. You'd like to helpas much as you can but there areways to lighten your financialburdens. Insist that wherever andwhenever possible expenses areshared out equally.

Virgo (Aug 24th-Sep 23rd)You continue to make significantheadway with a personal orpromotional project and the end isnow in sight. You're reaching thebeginning of the end of what hasbeen a progressive few weeks. You've accomplished a lot andlearned a lot about yourself in theprocess.

Motoring

Back seat bullies

We all know that most men think they make betterdrivers than women and it is true there is one elementof driving men certainly do better at and that's backseatbullying. If they're not burping, passing wind or tellingthe driver what gear they should be in, they're fiddlingwith the radio and dictating the route. For some reason men seem incapable of sitting back, relaxing and letting someone else drive, according to apoll by car insurance retailer Swinton. Instead, theyinsist on telling women how to drive and criticising theirmotoring abilities. It is hardly surprising then, that 69per cent of all drivers (male and female) say men arethe worst backseat bullies.Among the most annoying habits of these controllingpassengers, is breaking wind, burping, and fiddling withthe volume controls on the car radio, according to thesurvey. And if this isn't bad enough to ruin the concentrationof any driver, the poll suggests that male passengersadopt a raft of pester tactics to bully the driver tocompensate for the fact that they have been removedfrom the dominant role of controlling a car. It seems that rendered powerless by not actually beingable to sit in the driving seat, male passengers appearto do everything possible to interfere with the driver'sconfidence.

From telling them they are going the wrong way topoking fun at their steering, speed and music choice.Sound familiar? Well you are not alone as 69 per centof the 2,000 motorists surveyed said men are worsepassengers than women while 68 per cent said giventhe choice they preferred to travel with womenpassengers rather than men on long journeys. Evenmen think that other men make bad passengers as 43per cent say that male passengers always advise thedriver to use a different route or road. An annoying 33per cent want to change the music, a further 84 per centcannot resist fiddling with the air conditioning and aninfuriating 46 per cent are unable to resist commentingon the speed of the car. Conversely, it seems thatwomen make much more laid back passengers as only20 per cent of women drivers said their femalepassengers offer advice on which route or road to take.Furthermore, only five per cent insist on changing thedriver's choice of music, and just eight per cent ofwomen passengers feel the need to fiddle with theclimate controls. Not surprisingly, 68 per cent of maleand female drivers said they would rather have a womanpassenger than a man.On a more serious note, the insurance retailer isflagging up the dangers of these dreadful drivingcompanions by warning motorists that arguing with thedriver could lead to points on their driving licence or,even worse, cause an accident. The Highway Codestates that you must not drive without due care andattention and that you must avoid distractions such asarguing with passengers. Failure to do this could resultin a £5,000 fine and up to nine penalty points. Head ofinsurer development at Swinton, Chris Collings, says:"Annoying passengers can be a real distraction and cancause drivers to lose concentration. Driving is difficultenough, especially in heavy traffic, without having anirritating backseat driver in tow."

The Dragons' 2010/11 season ended with a sign ofwhat all these improvements could bring to the pitchand to the actual game. In the Magners League theteam enjoyed an almost unbeaten home streak atRodney Parade. Victories were won over old rivals theCardiff Blues as well as the other Welsh regions andheavy-weight sides such as Munster. Despite somelosses the Men of Gwent still managed to rank asseventh overall in the Magners with hopes that canimprove on that next season.

A better season seems likely with the Dragons squadfull of players giving them a depth of performancethat the club could be said to have been missing thesepast years. Exciting young players include TobyFaletau and Dan Lydiate who are amongst the fiveDragons that have been called up to this year's WorldCup squad. Faletau missed out on the Six Nations withan ankle injury but his performance last seasonearned him several young player awards from theWelsh Rugby Players' Association, the Welsh RugbyWriters Association and the Magners League. Lydiatehas left his potentially career-ending injury far behindto become a regular addition to the national squad.

Although it will be tough for the team to miss thesecrucial players, it has been shown time and time againthat there is a wealth of talent in the region waitingto step up and seize the opportunity.

As the Magners League becomes the RaboDirect Pro12, so the Dragons are moving onto an exciting newera with hopefully many successes to come.

These are exciting times for the Newport GwentDragons. After years of anticipation theredevelopment is under way. The current phase ison schedule with the new Bisley stand to becompleted in time for the start of the 2011/12season. The new season is set to bring manyinteresting changes to Rodney Parade and to theDragons.Purely on the redevelopment front there is theBisley stand replacing the Argus Terrace. With therelocated hospitality boxes and business andpremium clubs the Dragons hope to offer a bettermatch-day experience to nearly three thousandspectators. Existing parts of the ground are alsobenefiting from the update. The Hazell stand isbeing modernised with improved bars and modernfacilities being added.

Chief Executive Mike Jenkins has greatexpectations of what the redevelopment will meanto the Dragons players and supporters.

"I've spoken to some of the player's, in particularsome of the senior players that have been here along time and have been promised many things. There is a palpable sense that this is a region that'smoving places. A lot of those players, and thosejust coming in, have really been sold on the basisof the new facilities and they can see that we're aregion that's on the up.We have to convert on the pitch - people aren'tgoing to use the facility if they don't enjoy whatthey see on the pitch. We managed to do thatlast season. Obviously what we're looking for is todo it consistently over the whole of the seasonand if we do that then people will flock here."
