Be freeSwami Vivekananda used this expression
to capture the imagination of his western audi-
ence and he introduced them to a new taste of
freedom hitherto unknown to them and here is a
mischievous twist to Swamiji's message.
What follows is an imaginary picture of the
world parliament of religions in 1!". #n the
stage were sitting nearly forty leaders of all reli-gious denominations from different parts of the
world$ professing the superiority of their religion$
way of thinking$ of %od and of achieving eternal
happiness. &o Swamiji they all appeared as so
many ird catchers$ each with his own ird$ var-
ying in colour and eauty. #ne thing that char-
acteri(ed them was that they were all in cages.
#nly the colour of the plume differed as also
their capacity to talk. #f course$ the si(e and
shape of the cages differed. )ach one of the reli-
gious leaders was tightly holding on to their cag-
es for fear of the ird escaping from their captiv-
ity.
*t + pm when Swamiji rose up to speak$
he saw all these great teachers holding tightly
their cages fully conscious of the superior per-
formance of their irds. &hen he did a very mis-
chievous thing$ which he only could have done.
#ne y one he opened up all the cages of his co
religionists and set the irds free to fly into the
,nfinitude of reedom$ of &ruth$ of #neness.
irds having flown away all they had to do was
carry ack the empty cages or wait for the irds
to return to their captivity$ which they never
did////

The 3rst and foremost a)em%t of Swami(i was to
%ut across to the mul& religious and mul&racial audience
at the Parliament' the fact' that varied though they may
be in colour, creed, race, religion or other man made de-
nominaons, in the final scheme of spiritual analysis theywere nothing but brothers and sisters, born of and
aached to the same stock, the Divine elf! "is second
emphasis was that all human e#orts of reaching out to
god called religion, were but di#erent pathways leading
man to his ulmate goal of $od reali%aon!"is ins%ired
declara&ons rooted in his own Self reali$a&on made the
en&re audience one with him' leaving no room for %e)y
doubts or disbeliefs.
The telling exam%le of the 5frog in the well1 story he narrated in this connec&on has now become a
classic exam%le to demonstrate the narrow mindedness of religious leaders who refuse to acce%t the
truth in other religions. "e made &'niversal tolerance and acceptance of all religions as true(the refrains
of the 6hicago Parliament of 7eligions. This was 8ndia1s message that Swami(i wanted the world religions
to ado%t for world %eace.
"e gave a new orienta&on to the search for Truth and ac*uisi&on of !nowledge by eleva&ng
!nowledge to a search for Oneness' of unity in diversity. Such an idea that !nowledge is everyone1s basic
right will let humanity recogni$e that all of us are ci&$ens with e*ual right in the global village' which no
other idea can. "e provided a new dimension to religion by revealing the science of religion with self reali-
%aon as its essence. 9hat the world wants today is a new understanding based on the bedroc! of One
Ul&mate Truth' which can bring human hearts together without the discordant notes of the so called reli
gious dogmas and beliefs. "is lectures on )nana *oga brought a brighter vision of the +ne ruth' which
the western minds had not ex%erienced earlier. 4ewer realms of !nowledge were revealed to the 9est
when he s%o!e about secular !nowledge as di:erent from the im%erishable !nowledge of the Self in man.

To men&on a few s%ecial guidelines that Swami(i has leC with the 9est areF . The indestruc&ble

2ast but not the least' Swami(i directed the minds of his contem%orary scien&sts from the limited
visions of the world observed through the senses into the ever ex%anding realm of &meless' cosmological
in3nity. This has %aid great dividends in the form of the ex%anding fron&ers of *uantum science which is
