  • 4T his project is to study the immigration in Canada and the complications and obstacles that all newcomer

teenagers have to go through to get closer to a dream

that is hoped to be reached in a their country that they will

call home. By asking people who have been in Canada for

a certain period of time, who came as teenagers and have

experienced everything first hand and have already worked

the issue out by finding a career that seemed rushed decision

due to the circumstances, instead of well elaborated career path.

The reason I want to study this, is to create a community

of immigrants that want the situation for newcomers to

improve by informing the Canadian government about the

issues that new teenagers overcome them, to at least get into

a course that is possible for them and that their credits and

requirements fulfill. A common opinion in people whom

have already lives for a couple of years in Canada and whom

arrived as teenagers seems to be constant; most of then

instead of going to school for what they wanted, they ended

up taking a career that applied to the credits they had and

ended up choosing a career that seemed easy. The reason

for the making of this decision is due to stress to fit in,

lack, of attention to their problems, insufficient funds to pay

    a better career.

This will benefit society by informing the directives and

make them realize that the way that immigrants who arrive to

Canada arent being supported in the way that should be done,

and should improve the guidance according to the person

instead of assuming that what all which one person wants is

the best for everybody else; by doing these improvements,

the economy of Canada will be enhanced since the

competitiveness in many areas will raise and will also make

    the lifestyle better for all.

This area of study is different to all the others, because

contrary to what is already out there, which its been done

by only studies and surveys with bias, and also directed to

immigrants, this will be seeing by the eyes of immigrants

directed to the government, to aware that due to the

inconvenient and lack of guidance upon their arrival, young

immigrants see themselves forced to change their plans to

    adjust the Canadian lifestyle.

  • 5Currently there is nothing informing the government about how the immigrants feel about the guidance and support being working for the incomers; the only guidance there is, its only directed to immigrants and its the web-site for Immigration Canada, directing people who are planning to come to Canada about the requirements, how to apply for permits, licenses, visas and paperwork, directed to adults; as for the younger people such as teenagers, they are being overlooked

and not taken in mind as for what they are going to be living in a new country with a new culture

Something else that government is missing is the importance put in the knowledge

that teenagers might bring from their country since due to some lack of

practise with the language might result in misunderstanding of information for

the person, making them seem to be in a lower level in school, holding students back, and forcing them to go through curses again, prolonging their period of study.

The lack of guidance during high school is the main issue for young immigrants since for high school students the time seems to be running backwards adding

pressure in what career to chooseThe classes should be instead

of making it easier for the student, should be directed to what the

student wants to take afterwards, improving the help that will be needed

to achieve an average and goal for the student. Not only school and change of

culture is an issue, the so called Canadian experience is an issue as well for immigrating

teenagers, since the short period of living doesnt allow enough time to create this experience, which is required in many jobs.

The need for the government to keep in mind teenagers who enter Canada, is to improve their stay, education and decisions to be taken in this country supporting them in what their dreams are, since teenagers are the future, and in their hands is the prosperity of the country.

  • 7The principal reason for immigrants to arrive to Canada is economic reasons, in their country they might have issues working due to lack of available jobs or underpaid salaries. Many professionals decide to move out of their countries because even thought they have finished their studies, the economy of the country does not pay enough to support their family, forcing them to flee.

The main problem for professionals is that when they come to Canada, they dont know English or their English is so basic that they are not allowed to work in their area driving them to work in jobs with low salaries such as cleaning, driving cabs or even fast food restaurants wasting their knowledge that could be put in practise and benefit the country at any level.

The best way for a professional to come and work in their area is by having contacts with an employer who is willing to report immigration that

the person will be hired in the company. Otherwise, professionals come to an uncertain chance of finding a job. When professionals come to Canada, if they

dont know the language they are required to take a course of English, with the disadvantage that at the same time the person has to keep in mind the expenses of their living and they can hardly work due to the schedules, even though some of them live by the welfare, which doesnt create a high income making them live in a very tight budget, this forces them to drop the classes, and become part of the low income jobs making difficult to restart their

classes to practice their profession. Another inconvenient that professionals face

when coming to Canada, is that their degrees are not accepted due to the fact that the courses werent taking in Canada even thought that sometime the education outside might be more advanced or specialized in certain areas, and again are required to retake the courses in university or college.

Since many immigrants look for better opportunities not only for them, but for their families too, they bring their children along to give them an education and improve their chances of a better future. On 2008 an amount of 37,425 of immigrants between 15 years old up to 24 years old arrived to Canada. These people come to learn a new language and start a new life in a culture that they provably havent experienced before, causing them to be held back in school years, delaying their learning and even causing depression leading them to drop out, on the other side, another group of them whom may not drop out, end up taking courses that they hadnt planned, and a small minority end up taking courses that they wanted to; this is not only due to the disadvantage of changing culture or language, but it is also influenced by the guidance given in school. When a student starts school, undergoes a test to judge the level of English and math that the student is at, and from there, the student is placed

in certain level, sometimes even taken them back 2 school years and then located in a temporary school. Upon arrival to high school, the student is placed in easy classes not related leaving them with no opportunity to apply to courses in a post secondary education.

A strong factor that affects students, is the economic source, now that at the moment when the teenager reaches and postsecondary search for education, many parents are still struggling to have a stable income to support their living expenses, at this point is when teenagers start looking for work to help at home and at the same time support themselves and their studies, unfortunately most jobs require Canadian experience which the person might not have, limiting their opportunity to work leading teenagers to take jobs with a low payment in such places as fast food restaurants or grocery stores which dont create enough income to afford a descent education.

    Many of the im

themselves lost until they catch up w

    ith

it giving them an extra factor of stress. The rhythm

of life is very busy compared w

    ith other countries,

judging by other countries, the rhythm of life in

Canada feels like people live to work, instead of

working to live since people who are not used to

it, tend to spend more than what they earn and put

themselves in debt by having m

    any credit cards,

loans, a big mortgage also adding the fact that the

regular live expenses are expensive compared to

    other countries.

  • 9The investigation of immigrants lifestyles and changes of culture has inspired the idea and my project which is based on stories and anecdotes of immigrants to Canada, and their experiences living in a new culture; to aware to government the lack of support and guidance for teenage immigrants. To achieve this I have created a passive protest to gather a community giving the chance to people who want to share their experience with the government and improve the situation for new Canadians, so it is proven that this difficulties dont only relate to few people but to a big amount of immigrants. That is why I have decided to call this project Visa for a dream?; To imply the doubt and insecurity that the situation creates in the community that leaves them wondering if coming to Canada was the right decision to make their dreams come true or end up doing something that they werent expecting

  • To take this project to a w

    hole new level, I w

    ould like to approach the

    directives and administration of

    the current imm

    igrant programs,

    and inform them

    about the problem

    s that teenagers go through.I w

ould also create a way to get

    in touch with m

ore people and create a larger com

    unity whom

    is interested in im

    mproving the

situation for future generations and create a voluntary program

    s to invite new

    comers in C

    anada to

    answer and guide them

better into the adaptation to the new

    lifestyle that they w

    ill live from them

    on.A

nother way to take the project

into a bigger scale and reach to a larger com

unity, and for people to be ready even before com

    ming

    to Canada, w

    ould be to have program

s in other countries to inform

    them and educate about

the situation, so they are ready even before arriving to C

    anada.
