A dilemma faced by IT departments of several organizations is the complexity of provisioning and managing user desktops. While IT’s aim is to control operational costs, their end users need the freedom and flexibility to access their applications and data from multiple devices and locations. The challenge is to achieve an optimal balance between user needs and the organization’s internal policies and compliance requirements.

Wipro’s rich experience in implementation, support and migration of enterprise users to these cloud-based virtual desktop solutions for global customers will benefit enterprises on best practices for such large scale implementations. Our solution will enable organizations to do business better by deriving value out of it with quicker implementation and lower operational costs.

The latest offering from Wipro and VCE, the Virtual Computing Environment Company, provides virtual desktops on Vblock Infrastructure Platforms™, creating a highly integrated, “desktop as a service” infrastructure. Organizations can now virtualize their desktop operating systems, applications, and user data, and can effectively decouple these components from their underlying hardware and centralize them at a pre-tested & pre-validated private cloud infrastructure. IT administrators can then centrally provision and manage these desktop components from within the data center, creating a rapidly deployable, integrated cloud based desktop infrastructure. These Vblock platforms are pretested and hence enable quicker deployment of VMware View solution resulting in lesser development times and faster time to market. The solution also makes IT departments agile as modules can be quickly commissioned through automatic provisioning.

Offering VMware View on Vblock platforms makes it faster, easier, and less costly for IT staff to provision, deploy, maintain, and monitor desktop images across their entire life cycle, thus reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of their desktop infrastructures drastically. Various benefits offered by this solution are:

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure & Cloud Computing

Wipro's Service Offerings for VDI Adoption

The Solution: VMware View on Vblock

Scalable virtual desktop growth: As the needs of users grow, they can add more virtual desktops to their portfolio by simply switching to a larger or adding more Vblock Infrastructure packages

Quick deployment and desktop decommissioning: The users can rapidly deploy the virtual desktops than in the traditional VDI environments

Easy infrastructure management: Servers, Network and Storage can now be easily managed irrespective of their location

Self curing architecture ensures an unrestricted and continuous high performance of virtual desktop user experience, by handling power failures, network problems etc

Many to one management: A single Vblock supports thousands of users due to its consolidated high-density infrastructure packaging

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) has emerged as an effective solution to help enterprises overcome challenges associated with traditional desktop computing. VDI helps enterprises to deliver applications and information to the end users seamlessly while ensuring centralized deployment and maintenance of desktop infrastructure from the enterprise data centers.

VDI deployed over cloud infrastructure and delivered as “desktop as a service” makes the overall value proposition even more powerful. The combination of VDI and Cloud, also referred to as VDI on Cloud, is a scenario where VDI infrastructure is deployed centrally on a unified stack of cloud enabled platform (private cloud). Such architecture is also a cost effective approach to bring all enterprise resources under the control of data center using cloud technologies to ensure compliance and information security.

The customer, based in The Netherlands, is a global financial institution, offering banking, investments, life insurance and retirement services to meet the needs of a broad customer base. The customer was facing following challenges with its existing End User Computing Infrastructure:

Vblock solution for VMware View was chosen as a strategy to overcome these issues. It was chosen to improve end user productivity, data security, hardware lifespan and reduce the operational costs significantly.

Customer Background

Wipro’s End User Computing Program, of which the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is part, led to the following benefits for the customer:

Implemented Flexi-desk policy which provided the flexibility to the end users to login from anywhereReduction in the system logon time by 1/5th of the original time for usersIncreased user satisfaction because of the robustness and scalability of the solution offeringTransparent pricing with improved pricing mechanismEnhanced security and compliance as IT policies can be centrally administered and managedFaster patch management and upgradation

The servers and desktops were more than seven years old and no longer under a maintenance contractBusiness needs for working from home, anywhere access and end user device independence were increasingSupport costs were increasing End user productivity was decreasing due to less productive hardware

Business Benefits

The customer chose Wipro and VCE as strategic partners to roll out the Vblock solution for VMware View in a phased manner. The Wipro team, together with VCE, gathered requirements based on quick start SOWs and then implemented the solution in customer’s data centers which involved engineering of the environment, documentation and handover with a strenuous acceptance test.

Wipro provided services for implementation and migration of the end-users to Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8. Wipro also documented support processes, provided helpdesk training, end-user training and migrated the desktops to thin client.

The solution is based on multiple Vblock type 2 platforms, VMware View 4.5 and 4 V-Max storage arrays. Using the Vblock type 2 architecture, the customer can be assured that components have been tested, validated and documented as an integrated solution enabling faster go to market.

Wipro played a key role in designing and implementing the VDI server, storage and network for the customer. The complete solution was then integrated with the customer's existing infrastructure. This involved a complete analysis, back-up and restoration of VDI platform and configuration of the data. Wipro also coordinated with the current Infrastructure services support partner of customer, and provided support for VDI hosted in the data center. This was followed up with training to the customer and its vendor.
