What are minerals?+ A variety of artisans depend upon minerals to conduct business.

+ Minerals are found all over the planet. Most common minerals are found in rocks and mined for their value and usefulness.

+ Minerals are the raw materials that support much of modern life. Everything from transportation to the growing of food.

Geology of Virginia+ Virginia can be divided into five physiographic

regions , based on the general configuration of the land surface.

+ The five regions are Coastal Plain , Blue Ridge , Valley and Ridge , and Appalachian Plateau.

+ Each of these physiographic regions are underlain by distinct combinations of rock types , and each had a somewhat different geologic history.

Page 4: Virginia's Resources!

Coastal Plain• The surface slopes gently eastward from

elevations of less than 200 feet along its western margin to the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay then to Virginia's Eastern shore the Southern portion of the Delmarva Peninsula.

• It has Sedimentary rocks • Elevation less than 200 feet along its western

margin to the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay.

• 1-80 million years ago lie on top of crystals and sedimentary rocks

Page 5: Virginia's Resources!

Piedmont• The Piedmont goes from Virginia's Fall

Line which is west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

• It has Plutonic and Metamorphic Rocks.

• They're Triassic-age sedimentary beds• 200-230 million years old• Its elevation range is 100 ft. in the

East but more than 1,000 in the foothills in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Page 6: Virginia's Resources!

Blue Ridge*The Blue Ridge Mountains are mountains that

the bottom layers are made of granite and granulites that also include Precambrian metamorphosed rocks.

*It contains the oldest rock in Virginia, Old Rag granite dating back to 1.2 million years ago.

*They also include the two highest mountains in the state, Mt. Rogers and White Top.

*Currently the US mined the Blue Ridge Mountains for quartzite and in the past years they were mined for copper, iron, maganese and a limited amount of tin.

Page 7: Virginia's Resources!

Valley and Ridge*They include thick sedimentary layers that formed

during the Paleozoic Era.*Valley and Ridge Plains layers consist of shale,

dolostone, and limestone dominant of the east and grade westward into layers include the minerals sandstone, siltstone and shale.

*The primary ridge formers are composed of sandstone and cut into less resistant limestone and shale formations.

*The resources are that we currently take from the Valley and Ridge Province are limestone, dolostone, sandstone, gypsum, iron oxide, clay, oil, natural gas, and shale.

Appalachian Plateau

• The Appalachian Plateau is the fringe in the Valley and Ridge And it is located along most of the western margin of the state.

• It contains coal and other valuable resources

• It has large swampy areas provided the material for coal strata in southwestern VA.

• Coal, crushed stone, sand & gravel, lime, and natural gas.

• The Appalachian Plateau is around 571 to 320 years old back in the Paleozoic Era.

Key Minerals and Resources of Va• Minerals are the raw material that

support much of modern life.• A variety of people depend on upon

minerals to create business such as Chemists, all sorts of manufacturers, farmers, and artisans.

• The minerals of VA deposits are vast and varied.

Role of Coal in VA-Virginia gradually continues to get most

of its energy from non-renewable energy resources such as coal and natural gas.

- Coal is one of the most valuable resources in Virginia. It is also primarily used to generate most of Virginia's electricity.

- Virginia's coal was first produced commercially produced near richmond in the early 1700's

Virginia is the leader in unleashing the power of nuclear energy that is in the nucleus of an atom.

Nuclear Power In VA* nuclear power is another nonrenewable

resources.*uraniums are used to generate

electricity by a process called nuclear fission

*some power plants are -lake anna -surry

Page 14: Virginia's Resources!

Dependence on NonRenewable Resources :)

* Fossil Fuels* Coal* Oil* Natural Gas

* Most of Virginia's energy comes from these three resources

* Mainly Coal!!!!!!* Coal is the most valuable resource of VA

because it generates electricity

What can YOU do to help? Some ways become a wise energy -miser

are ...* Save Electricity - Turn all electronics

like games and t.v. off when you leave a room.

*Save Heat - If heat is running, close all doors and windows to stay warm.

*Save Gas- You can try riding a bike or something instead of a car.
