McGowan’s Musings

As the rain pours down – again! – I’m

preparing to go to Hamburg for this year’s

edition of Reeperbahn, always a worthwhile

and full on event! Hopefully we’ll have time

to sneak in a bit of a report when I return

to Brighton next Saturday 26th September.

Whatever happens I intend to have a good

time and from the looks of it the party

schedule should help out with that! Work

will also have its place of course and I will

be moderating panels on Music and Control

– which will be a session on the fact that

there are still countries with repressive

governments and authorities that interfere

in the careers of bands and artists. We’ll

also be looking at the first International Live

Music Sponsoring Report, and considering

the vital topic of Funding for Live Venues

– all subjects close to our hearts at VIP

News and VIP Booking! We’re well into

the Conference and Showcase season, the

first edition of the International Festival

Forum kicks off in London next week, at the

same time Waves takes place in Vienna and

Bratislava, and next month we’ll be off to

Paris for the MaMA Event, October 14-16.

We live in troubled times and the plight of

immigrants pouring into Europe looking

for a reasonable lifestyle, the sort of thing

that many of us take for granted, worsens

by the day and tends to make our own

troubles appear reasonably inconsequential.

However there have been a few problems,

the Reeperbahn organisers had to do some

re-jigging following the burning down of

one of central Hamburg’s permanent open-

air stages; U2’s Stockholm show had to be

halted on September 20th and moved to

the 22cnd, following a ‘security breach’,

the intimations were that a man was seen

brandishing a gun, and in times like these

you can’t be too careful! The Who have

had to cancel dates on what they say is their

final tour, because Roger Daltrey is suffering

from viral meningitis, we wish him well.

There is some heartening news for the

live music industry, which of course

includes all of you – our esteemed readers!

Nielsen’s Music 360 2015 study of music

consumers, indicates that live music is

becoming an even bigger deal, with the

research showing that concerts, club shows

and DJ events account for more than half of

all music-related expenditures. Festivals are

apparently especially popular, with 11% of

Americans saying they’ve attended one in

the past 12 months. And 12% of the survey

respondents said live events introduced

them to new music, up more than 70%

from the previous year. So, that’s good to

know!

However when it comes to ‘new music’ it’s

interesting to note that the three artists

competing for the current number one spot

in the UK album charts are, Cliff Richard,

Keith Richards and Dave Gilmour, both with

solo albums. So much as I’m all for new

music, maybe, for us older chaps there’s

something reassuring about this…..!

So, Ladies and Gentlemen (of all ages!) –

The News!

The 50th anniversary edition of music industry conference MIDEM

will take place in Cannes from June 7-10, 2016. The event had

initially been scheduled to take place from June 28-July 1.

“It is a pleasure to be able to confirm that the next Midem will take

place at the beginning of June 2016,” said Jérôme Delhaye, director

of Reed MIDEM’s Entertainment Division.

“This was always our preferred date but the popularity of the Palais

des Festivals means that finding available slots to hold events can

be challenging. We are delighted that together with the Palais des

Festivals we have found a solution.”

Music business veteran Brian Lane has been

appointed head of United Stage International,

the new London-based office of leading

Swedish booking agency United Stage Artist.

Brian Lane has been responsible for building

and managing the careers of such artistes as

Katherine Jenkins, Asia, YES, A-ha, amongst

others.

United Stage Artist is one of Sweden’s biggest

booking agencies. The company has run for

30 years and has around 230 artists on its

roster, staging around 2800 shows per year.

United Stage International office will be

located in London.

The partnership between Lane and United

Stage will see Lane taking existing clients of

United Stage into the global music market,

exploiting their international potential

around the world. This is the second office

United Stage has opened outside of Sweden,

having recently moved into Oslo, and marks

the continual expansion and growth of the

company. Lane is currently building the team

outside of the Nordics with an initial hire of

Mel Westwood, from The Leighton Pope

Organisation, together with Valerie Potter as

Artist Development Manager.

Brian Lane said “I’ve worked in Scandinavia

for the past 12 years and have seen how

buoyant and creative the music market is

there. Next to the UK and the US it’s the

biggest market creatively and commercially,

and I feel the global opportunities are

immense. Also, we want to do fairer deals

with the artists and properly support them

at the start of their careers, when they need

it the most, rather than taking a percentage

of the small amounts of money they might

make to start with. This is a long term

strategy, we’ll be selective and make quality

rather than quantity the hallmark of this new

venture.”

Jonas Thulin, New Business Director, United

Stage Artist said “Brian is a huge figure in

the music industry and this partnership will

deliver great things. We have got off to

a fantastic start with the deals that have

already been done and there will be many

more to come. We wanted someone with real

expertise and a hugely respected reputation

to lead our charge across the globe and that

person is Brian.”

Music Venue Trust has announced

that UK Music has joined the partners

supporting Venues Day 2015 which takes

place on Tuesday 20 October at Ministry

of Sound, London. The partnership will see

UK Music host and chair the opening panel

of the day, titled Big Issues for Small

Venues: Turning Words Into Actions.

Since the first Venues Day event in

December 2014, awareness of the

precarious position in which the UK’s small

independent venues find themselves has

grown enormously. Music Venue Trust, the

charity created to champion and protect

the nation’s grassroots music, continues to

lead this work and is putting together this

year’s networking day for highlighting and

discussing the key issues.

Venues Day 2015 is the only national event

aimed specifically at the people who run

small to medium scale independent music

venues.

The day will offer panels, workshops,

seminars and networking on three themes

identified as the Big Issues for Small

Venues; Turning Words into Action;

Business Up - Be Inspired; Costs Down

- Be Efficient.

Delegates will have opportunity to learn

about schemes that will help their business

and save them money, tech initiatives and

audience development projects that could

bring new punters to their venues. There

will be representatives from leading music

industry businesses, cultural organisations

and advisors on issues such as accessing

finance, insurance, licensing and legal issues.

UK Music presents Big Issues For Small

Venues is the opening panel of the day and

will see representatives from key players in

the UK music and cultural industry talk about

the next steps for grassroots music venues.

The panel will feature UK Government

Culture Minster Ed Vaizey and Shadow

Secretary of State for Culture Michael

Dugher, BBC Radio 6Music presenter Steve

Lamacq, Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive BPI &

BRIT Awards, Arts Council England (London

Area Director) Joyce Wilson, and Mark

Davyd, CEO ofMusic Venue Trust.

Jo Dipple, Chief Executive of UK Music, will

Chair the panel, which is likely to provide a

lively debate about what needs to be done

to protect, secure and improve the UK’s

grassroots music venues.

Jo Dipple of UK Music said: “UK Music is

proud to be a partner of Venues Day for

a second year running. Last year’s event

will be remembered for bringing grassroots

music venues together for the first time. I

want this year’s event to be the moment

when decisive action is agreed to save

music venues in the face of considerable

threats.”

“It is clear that the legislative framework

was not written with the interests of

grassroots music venues in mind. Politicians

have an opportunity to change the law and

a responsibility in making the areas they

represent the best places to work, rest and

play. It is vital that we have a sustainable

venue circuit and I look forward to exploring

with the panel at Venues Day how this may

be achieved.”

Welcoming the opportunity to debate

the issues surrounding grassroots music

venues, Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive BPI

& BRIT Awards, said: “Music venues are

vital for the health of British music. They

are where artists build their grassroots fan

base and hone their craft as performers.

BPI is supporting Venues Day 2015 because

venues in this country are increasingly under

threat and we want to work with the music

community to protect them.”

Venues Day 2015 is a one day event, running

from 10.30am - 6.30pm on Tuesday 20

October at Ministry of Sound, London.

Thanks to a headline partnership with live

music subscription app Jukely, Grassroots

VIPNEWS > SEPTEMBER 2015

Many venues, and of course artists, supplement their income by the

sales of merchandising, including of course recorded product. Until

now CD’s etc sold at venues on the touring circuit have not been

included in overall sales figures, but under a new initiative launched

this autumn sales from live music venues are to count towards

Official Albums Chart. Called Lightning Live and implemented by

The Official Charts Company, the initiative has been launched to

help support new revenue stream for artists & labels.

The system has been developed

following extensive trials and is designed

to support labels and artists using their

gigs to reach out to broader audiences,

aside from traditional retail. The move

means the Official Albums Chart will

reflect the widest range of formats and

outlets in its history, as it celebrates its

60th anniversary.

When the first UK albums chart was introduced by Record Mirror

in July 1956, the weekly poll was made solely from specialist music

shops selling vinyl albums. Today, the Official Albums Chart reflects

sales of physical formats including CDs, vinyl albums and cassettes,

as well as sales of digital bundles and (since February this year) audio

streams too – across retailers including supermarkets, clothing stores,

mail order operators, specialist entertainment chains, independent

dealers, digital download stores and streaming services.

Official Charts Company chief operating officer Omar Maskatiya

says, “The launch of Lightning Live follows approaches from both

independent and major labels, who are increasingly using live events

as a route to get their products to fans and new audiences.

“We strive constantly to ensure that the Official Charts reflects and

responds to consumer behaviour - and this move, following just a

few months after the integration of streams, further underlines this

strategy.”

Lightning Live has been developed over many months and road

tested on a string of concerts in the past six months. It uses a

simple password-protected web interface to allow live retailers to

submit sales data, which is then checked

by Official Charts and its nominated

research partner Millward Brown before

being accepted for the Official Charts.

Retailers are required to submit a pre-

event inventory report, along with

full details of the concert, summary

of capacity, tickets sold, before then

submitting details of sales achieved.

Millward Brown will cross-reference

with existing data reports to ensure sales fall within accepted sales

patterns – any suspect data will not be included in the Official Chart

survey.

The Official Albums Chart entered its 60th year in July, the very first

UK album chart having been launched by NME in July 1956 with

Frank Sinatra’s Songs For Swingin’ Lovers as its first Number 1. Over

the coming year, a range of activities being organised by the Official

Charts Company, ahead of the anniversary week itself next summer

will mark the anniversary.

Should this all work out as planned it will be interesting to see if any

advantages pass over to the venues.

VIPNEWS > INDEPTH STORY > SEPTEMBER 2015

The main news is that the Swedish concert

market seems to be in good shape. Following

the demise of previously successful major

open-air events like Hultsfred, Arvika and

even Peace & Love, all of which filed for

insolvency in recent years, it currently

appears that this market segment has re-

covered very well.

The resulting market consolidation caused

various amendments but nevertheless led

to a generally satisfying festival season

in 2015. Although the Siesta Festival in

Hasslehölm in the south of Sweden did not

go ahead; Kulturföreningen Markan, a non-

profit organisation who had promoted the

event since 2001 had gone for protection

last year, but finally filed insolvency in June

2015, just two weeks before this year’s

edition was supposed to take place.

The also non-profit organisation behind the

Peace & Love Festival, previously the biggest

open-air event in Sweden filed insolvency in

2013. But this year’s edition went ahead and

attracted 10.000 visitors with a completely

new concept, mainly featuring domestic

artists and downsized to just three days

instead of five.

Bråvalla, which debuted in 2013 and with

56.000 visitors last year instantly became

the biggest music festival in Sweden ever,

only sold 50.700 tickets this year with

headliners such as Robbie Williams, Muse

and Calvin Harris. The event is promoted

by FKP Scorpio Sweden, a subsidy of FKP

Germany, which has become the biggest

European festival promoter, promoting

major Festivals in Denmark, Finland,

Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany.

Interestingly domestic artists in Sweden, as

elsewhere in Europe have become more and

more important for the live music industry.

At Bråvalla, Swedish artists Kent, Sabaton

and Lars Winnerbäck played shortly before

the mentioned international headliners

on the main stages of the event. One day

before the event went ahead on June 25

to 27, FKP Scorpio announced that it had

agreed with the city of Norrkoping that

Bråvalla would stay in the town for another

10 years. The city of Norrkoping agreed to

Bråvalla

support the festival with 1.3 million Swedish

Crones (138.000 Euro) annually.

FKP Sweden furthermore promotes the

festivals Getaway Rock in Gavle and the

showcase festival Where’s the Music in

Norrkoping. When FKP Scorpio entered

the Swedish market in 2010 it bought the

trademark rights for the Hultsfred festival.

After three editions FKP Scorpio decided

in 2014 not to continue to promote this

festival.

Getaway Rock is a metal festival taking

place at the beginning of August. This

year’s edition pulled 8.500 people. Where’s

The Music is the venture by FKP Scorpio to

launch a showcase festival similar to trade

events such as Eurosonic Noorderslag in the

Netherlands or Bylarm in Oslo, which hosts

an industry conference program alongside

the public event. For the first edition of

this event in February 2015, FKP Scorpio

reported 4.700 concertgoers for its club

festival in Norrkoping and 400 industry

delegates.

However, the biggest concert company

in Sweden is still Live Nation. With

all its subsidies such as Luger and

Stureplansgruppen Live (SPG Live) the

company employs 75 staff and promotes

2.200 events per year. Live Nation Sweden

acquired a majority stake in SPG Live in

March 2015, a company that is specialized

in EDM events. Their biggest event is

Summerburst festival, which has run for five

years. The company promotes two edition

of the event, one in Gothenburg (May 29-

30, 2015) and one in Stockholm (June 12-13,

2015). Both events gained around 30.000

visitors per day, featuring almost the same

billing of artists like Avicii Fest, Axwell Λ

Ingrosso and Afrojack.

Another successful EDM event in Sweden is

Big Slap; staged in Malmo on August 1 it

gained 15.000 visitors in its third year. This

event is co-promoted by Öresundsgruppen

and Kulturbolaget, a strategic partner of

Live Nation Sweden, which promotes most

Live Nation concerts in the South of Sweden.

Live Nation subsidy Luger promotes the

festivals Way Out West, Stockholm Music &

Arts and co-promotes Popaganda. The Way

Out West festival in Gothenburg on August

13-15 achieved a visitor record this year

with 30.000 people per day. This event in

previous years also staged a smaller industry

gathering with a conference program.

However, the event is also known for being

very environmentally friendly. This year’s

program featured artists Florence And The

Machine, Belle & Sebastian; Chic featuring

Nile Rodgers, Pet Shop Boys and Patti Smith.

Alongside other industry sources a Live

Nation Sweden spokesperson confirmed

that overall ticket sales for festivals and

concerts are very satisfactory in 2015.

Furthermore in line with the rising relevance

of domestic artists for the live music sector,

is the news that later on this year Live Nation

will promote an arena tour with Peter

Jöback & Helen Sjöholm entitled “I Love

Musicals” in October and that tickets are

selling very well. For the tour in June-July of

the Swedish singer Thomas Ledin alone Live

Nation sold more than 100.000 tickets the

spokesman said. In July also Roxette played

five shows in Sweden, selling between

10.000 to 15.000 tickets per show.

A spokesman for United Stage, one of the

biggest independent concert agencies in

Sweden, told Music & Copyright that the

success of Swedish artists even spreads into

most of the other Nordic countries too. The

company represents more than 160 artists,

including, Basshunter, Eagle-Eye Cherry and

The Leather Nun and generates more than

2.000 concerts annually.

One of the few independent festivals

that survived the festival crisis was the

Emmaboda Festivalen. This festival has

apparently taken place since 1990 and this

year gained 11.000 visitors per day. The

three-day event takes place in the south of

Sweden at the end of July. As various other

industry sources mentioned, the gender

aspect obviously plays a big role in Swedish

society. In relation to this the festival

gained some controversial media reports

in terms of the ongoing gender debate in

the country. It is now almost compulsory

for festival promoters or organizers of music

conventions to be tasked with staging

a 50/50 billing, to follow a guideline of

featuring 50 percent female artists or

speakers. The Emmoboda Festival in recent

media reports has been sharply criticized for

booking only a 10 percent quota of female

artists and that despite the fact, that this

festival in the past often has been praised for

its remarkable line up. The current program Way Out West

11

VIPNEWS > INDEPTH STORY > SEPTEMBER 2015

featured artists such as Dope D.O.D, Lee

Scratch Perry and Don Diablo.

The Swedish Branch of The Agency Group

has also been included in the takeover by

the US company United Talent Agency

in the beginning of September. The local

branch is based in Malmo and represents

domestic artists such as The Hives, Mando

Diao and Millencolin internationally. Former

employees of The Agency had moved over

to the concert agency Pitch & Smiths in

2014. This concert agency was founded

in 2007 and interestingly for a Swedish

company, has its headquarters in the UK.

The company employs 9 staff of which two

are running a company office in Stockholm.

The local branch looks after domestic

artists like Beatrice Eli, Joy, Kristin Amparo,

Maskinen, Norlie & KKV and Silvana Imam.

The latest market entry has been the launch

of the concert hall in Malmo in August 2015.

The new venue is named Malmo Live and

has capacity of 1.200 persons, conference

locations and a hotel. In October it will

stage concerts of artists like Bob Dylan and

Ann Brun.

Since last year June Sweden has also now a

trade body for the live music industry known

as Livemusik Sverige. The organisation

currently has around 60 members, among

others Live Nation. FKP Scorpio, Blixten and

United Stage. The latest market figures are

from 2013, reporting that the Swedish Live

Music Industry gained a revenue of 3.8

billion Swedish Crones (403 million Euro)

and accounts for 51 percent of the total

turnover of the Swedish music industry in

that year. Figures for 2014 are supposed to

be revealed in the next couple of weeks by

Music Sverige.

CTS Eventim - Price Targets Set

Latest Research Reports by Analysts reveal

positive prospects for CTS Eventim. While

Warburg Research increased the price target

from formerly 30 up to 33 Euro, Berenberg

Bank pitched the price target for the share

even as high as 46 Euro. The analyst of

this bank considers that the deployment of

customer data in the midterm perspective

could contribute to the growth of the

company. The rating by Warburg Research

remains on “Hold” while Berenberg Bank

indicate “Buy”.

In the last issue Vip News reported a share

price of 32.18, on September 28 the share

price was 33.08 Euro.

DEAG - Under Pressure

New festivals cost DEAG both financial land

share price losses. When DEAG revealed

its business report for H1-2015, (first half

year 2015), the company reported a strong

revenue increase from 96.7 up to 118.8

million Euro. However, DEAG also reported

that in conjunction with ongoing legal claims

resulting out of the move from one of its new

festivals from the Nürburgring site to the

“Veltins Arena” in Gelsenkichen could lead

to a company loss of 9.3 million Euro.

DEAG declared that the legal case should be

settled by the end of the year. In its report

DEAG furthermore announced the sale of

its asset Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt. Since

then the share price of DEAG decreased from

a previously reported 6.07 to 4.51 Euro. In

the 52 week comparison the share price loss

has now amounted to 22.6 percent.

Live Nation - The Share Price Compass

Seeks Direction

The share price of the global player Live

Nation is struggling. Even if the business

results for H1-2015 indicated a revenue

increase reported in the previous edition of

Vip News from $1,665 up to $1.765 bn, the

share price itself remains only stable. Last

time it was $23.98, this time it is $24.38.

On June 26 the share stood at $28.56, now it

is almost on the same level as on September

29, 2014 when the closing price was $24.31.

SFX Entertainment - How Low Can You

Go?

One months ago the reported share price was

$0.85. The headline for this development

was “A Financial Tragedy”, this time the share

price of SFX Entertainment slipped down to

$0.45...

Correction & Apology

In the recent article “The Meaning Of Live Nation” we reported in the introduction:

“The market entry of Live Nation in Germany by taking on Marek Lieberberg as CEO and Daniel Lieberberg as a president

came as a surprise for many industry players.”

This was an incorrect reference to the name of the president which should have been Andre Lieberberg not Daniel

Lieberberg. We regret the mistake and apologise.
